I was told I need a coolant flush and front brakes at the VW store recently. The coolant I get because it was last changed at 35,965 miles, right before it went out of warranty. Bad water pump or something so had everything changed under warranty, so it's been awhile for the coolant as now at 78,090. The brakes have 5 mm left, which according to Siri is about halfway for VW Golf front pads. Seems the rears are just fine. The pedal doesn't have that much free space under it when brakes are at a stop light, but that could be normal when it was new...just don't remember. So, coolant will be done sooner then later, the brakes might just wait a bit.
I would get the front pads done when it’s in for the coolant change. They are cheap and the labor would need to be paid anyway eventually so why not get it all done in one trip?

————————————————- Good idea. Since he has a short garage parking spot if his brakes don’t work he has no coasting space and he could take out his A/C unit. But I don’t think we can rule out that he’s cheap.

Dishwasher problem. The door doesn't not want to stay up near the top like it did. I'm better broken spring. I recall hearing a noise when I opened the door a day ago.
The Man will have to pull the DW out part way once a spring replacement arrives. At least I won't have to disconnect all the power and supply and drain lines to pull the DW out all the way like one style requires that has a spring all the way to the back of the machine.
Totally makes sense to do them both at the same time and knowing me, I probably will. That time the tranny cable snapped in the garage, the car did lurch forward a bit but the brakes held just fine. A bit scary and if not, would've smashed into the a/c air handler and then into the closet of my office. Luckily the big guy upstairs protected me from danger and a large house expense.
Yep, with any property, it costs to keep things up. Before tax season starts, gonna take the Mrs. into Lowe's or HD and pick out some pendant lights for the kitchen and have them installed. Think it'll make the place look nicer and will be easier for me to swap out light bulbs in the future.

I wish I had the snow blower that @stickguy bought. Still snowing steadily here in Colorado. Lots of roads are closed to the east.
Wife and stepdaughter just left for the cooking studio. They have a class and three birthday parties scheduled today. Glad they have the Kia and not the MINI - more ground clearance.
It makes me glad to be in Florida. I arrived on Monday and the temperature has been in the high 80s all week and for next week, it is 8 to 10 degrees above normal. I feel for you man I think I'll head over to the pool (87F).
Oh yeah rub it in why don't ya.
Here is my driveway clearing story. About 20 years ago our neighbors were on a weekend trip and we got about a 6-8 inch snowfall. I had access to his garage and his snowblower so I decided to clear his drive way. I got about one foot from the garage when the machine clogged up and died. I had sucked up the power cord for his christmas lights which he had left on. The cord was under the snow. My wife who was watching me from our front porch across the cul de sac yelled, unplug it, unplug it, you're going to get electrocuted. I shook my head and smugly yelled back, it's gas powered not electric. She yelled back, I'm talking about the power cord. OH, I replied. End of story, which she still reminds me of occasionally.
Labor will be the same regardless of when he has the brakes done. Not getting a discount because they are also doing a coolant flush.

Another reason why I learned how to turn a wrench. Plus, how many times do you want to put up with upsells?

Our X3 showed brakes due in 4000 miles, last January, when we had the annual service done.
10 months and 8000 miles later, it shows brakes due in 1300 miles.
And, now that's the Porsche dealer's problem.
So now the truth comes out. We know why you REALLY traded in the X3!

It depends on what kind of cookies and donuts they have in the waiting room. My MB dealer has a large screen TV, a cafe with top notch coffee, and made-in-house sandwiches and soup, and wi-fi, I'd rather stay and get it all done. Getting brakes done about 10% earlier than necessary isn't a big cost savings. Don't put off until tomorrow, what you can probably get done today.

I need a life. or to retire. Had some vacation days that I have to use up by OEY or I will lose them (can't have that) so took one today. Even though I will really regret it tomorrow being another day behind on who knows what bad stuff.
had big plans to go to some car dealer just for old time's sake. Instead, I took apart a wood shelf and moved it to the basement. Then put together a replacement metal one for the garage. made a trip to Lowe's for more blinds. Made a return trip to get the right model and the 2 other things I forgot. Decided to mow the lawn because it might finally rain in a couple of days. Painted all the spackle work in the pantry and wandered around the house touching up a bunch more marks on the wall.
place looks a lot better, and now I can finally unpack everything in the garage and put it where it belongs. But there was zero fun had. Still better than working (just a lot more tiring physically, not mentally though).
If I was retired, I could space out the projects better! At least the $ hemorrhage is almost over. Pantry goes in and the new king-sized bed shows up tomorrow. Last item on the list is the rest of the bedroom furniture hopefully next week. Then we are done buying stuff. Just have to put away, organize, hang pictures. And the winter project, cleaning up the rest of the yard that I am reclaiming.
also picked up a 2 pack of furnace filters (the one in there was never changed and not sure how long it ran since the furnace was installed in March, so about time. It did look pretty fuzzy). Of course it is one of the harder to find fat ones. 16x25x5. I noticed with the Jersey house that most places sent 4" when you asked for 5". Lowes had 2 options, a 5" and a 4" (as labeled). So I compared them, and the 4" looked bigger. read the 5" version (forget the brand) was actually 4 1/4" thick. the 4" one (Filtrete), was 4 1/3" so actually fatter. Very weird

It’s tempting. Will reevaluate in April after year end bonus season, and our next birthday. By then I should know if work is settling down and how bad our portfolio got slaughtered. And hopefully we ran out of very expensive things to go broke on (though we do have a wedding and 1st grandchild coming in Q2!)

We helped her brother this year with a reasonable contribution (far from the whole thing or even the bulk of it) so seems far to do the same for her. The kid we will likely seed a 529 account. The bigger hit will be if my wife totally burns out and wants to quit a year or so early to do a bit of day care coverage to fill in some gaps.

My VPN got me kicked off Edmunds yesterday, so I'll post this a day late. On November 18, 1995 I picked up my Club Sport from Fields BMW in Chicago.
To commemorate 29 years of ownership I drove it to work yesterday. It is still a whole lot of fun to drive. The Turner/Conforti chip wakes up the M42 four cylinder a bit and the five speed manual is the finishing touch.

In other news, I was preparing for a double murder trial to finish off my tenure, but yesterday the defense attorneys announced that the defendant would be making an open plea- meaning that he is pleading guilty to all charges. The judge will determine his sentence. That's the second time it's happened in the past couple of months, and both cases were double murders. The judge is anything but lenient, so it's kind of unusual. In fact, I was interviewed by a true crime channel about the previous case. It's definitely something I've never had happen before.

I read that yesterday.
When I was still traveling for work quite a bit, I was returning an AVIS rental at San Jose Airport. Got to the Avis lot and there was a huge line of cars parked on the side of the service road leading to the Avis parking lot. Waited for about 5 minutes when a guy came running towards someone behind me. I rolled my window down and asked him if he knew what the hold up was. He said no one was at the check in area.
I had a flight to catch. So, I gathered my luggage through the keys of the rental car on the seat and began to hoof it a mile and a half back towards the airport. Same guy I had spoke to saw me and was in another car with someone else and yelled to me if I needed a ride to the airport to hop in. I did.
Didn't know who they were. Didn't know what the hold up was. Didn't have a receipt for the return. Never heard another peep from Avis...no emailed receipt, no charges, no typical "how did we do" email survey. Nothing.
Never rented from Avis again (and I was renting cars once a week back then).

Have something similar in my Bosch Dishwasher. I probably pull it out and clean it every month or two. Not a lot of cleaning other than to spray the whole thing with Dawn and run the internal and external screen with hot water. That usually does the trick.
Huh - I suppose I ought to look to see if our dishwasher has a similar type of filter.
The interior painting continues, somewhat haphazardly. Daughter is now focused on painting all the trim around the house. She got some better tools to make the job easier, and more precise. She's a bit OCD, and didn't like the look of the previous work she had done.

If you have an "American" style dishwasher, it has a grinder, so no filter.
"European" style dishwashers have no grinder, ergo the filter.
If your dishwasher is rated less than 50 dB, it is most certainly "european".
You can't go by manufacturer, necessarily, though all Bosch have filters.

Funny that has come up, I was just browsing online for a new DW.
It's a dilemma. The Bosch I like and that has good ratings is $1500+ 15% tax in worthless Canadian dollars. There are cheaper Bosch ones in the $900 to $1100 range but their reviews are surprisingly meh. Then I pivoted to KitchenAid/Whirlpool models in the same $900-$1100 range that seem mostly identical to each other and which had good ratings up to about a year or so back only to discover that recent builds all have the same problem, a vent that leaks water, not good, and which techs are presently unable to fix, so they're out. Now I'm down to 2 models that are about the same price, around $900, an LG and a Frigidaire. Both have great reviews on the websites. The sales guy at HD really talked up the LG. I'm dithering.
So, speaking of new drivers and permits and such, I think you all know I'm still trying to find my next "professional" adventure.
In the meantime I've been working part time at Walmart - which has been good for my health (walking 3-5 miles per shift), and I've just started another part time gig as a driving instructor. Yep, riding around with teenagers and showing them the ins and outs of how to navigate our roads. The company is family owned and it's been an adventure, to say the least.
The fleet is comprised of a number of Chevrolet Cruzes' and Ford Focus' (yes, with the dismal DCT transmission). A second brake pedal has been added to the passenger side, and I've only had to use it a couple of times in the 2 months I've been working there.
The State of Colorado insists that before drivers get their permit they must attend 30 hours of classroom training, either in person or on-line. Then, they must hold their permit for 12 months, and complete 6 hours of certified training (that's where I come in), and 50 hours of documented driving time with their parents or other responsible adult party - 10 of which must be completed at night.
I'm sure you all have a bunch of questions - fire away!
———————————————— Congratulations.
Hopefully you have weathered as well after 29 years. The only thing I have that is 29 years old and older is Mrs. j and I haven’t.

Good idea. Since he has a short garage parking spot if his brakes don’t work he has no coasting space and he could take out his A/C unit.

Labor will be the same regardless of when he has the brakes done. Not getting a discount because they are also doing a coolant flush.

10 months and 8000 miles later, it shows brakes due in 1300 miles.
And, now that's the Porsche dealer's problem.

There's something new every day going wrong!

Yep, with any property, it costs to keep things up. Before tax season starts, gonna take the Mrs. into Lowe's or HD and pick out some pendant lights for the kitchen and have them installed. Think it'll make the place look nicer and will be easier for me to swap out light bulbs in the future.

Why take your car in for service more times than less? If you’re not doing the work yourself you’re always going to be inconvenienced and at the mercy of others.
Another reason why I learned how to turn a wrench. Plus, how many times do you want to put up with upsells?

Plus think of the gas savings by not having to go back and forth to the service dept.

I never really thought of it before but with all the goodie’s luxo dealers provide maybe their thinking is to get customers to come in for service more often. Maybe even lessen the sting when the customer is presented with their bill.
@laurasdada sure seems to like the perks at his dealer.

One trip instead of two. Car out of service just once instead of twice. Seems a smart move unless you enjoy hanging out in service lounges.

At the Albany airport Enterprise stays open until midnight OR until the last flight arrives. These guys evidently took off 6 hours before normal closing times and left keys in cars. Remember, at these smaller airports nobody offers the grab and go service.
Can’t figure it.

had big plans to go to some car dealer just for old time's sake.

You’re right. When you’re retired you have none of those problems, at least I don’t. I defer projects so long that I can honestly convince myself I didn’t have to do them. What a life.

The interior painting continues, somewhat haphazardly. Daughter is now focused on painting all the trim around the house. She got some better tools to make the job easier, and more precise. She's a bit OCD, and didn't like the look of the previous work she had done.

Yeah, Progresso soup is not bad, 😋 - you can’t taste the GMO’s.
"European" style dishwashers have no grinder, ergo the filter.
If your dishwasher is rated less than 50 dB, it is most certainly "european".
You can't go by manufacturer, necessarily, though all Bosch have filters.

You tell ‘em. The sad part of grandkids is that they don’t stay young. I have 5 with the youngest, a girl, who just got her drivers permit and according to Son #2 she’s doing very well. Better than her older brother (a college sophomore) who has had more fender benders than years of driving experience.
