Thanks again everyone. It was very fortunate that I was able to find something so quickly. My wife getting a new role was just the icing on the cake.
As noted brick and mortar retail is tough right now. I couldn’t even imagine being in the stores. The managers are worked like dogs because the hours allotted for the team is so low they have to do so much themselves and spend 70+ hours in the store each week.
First and foremost, I am glad both you and your wife landed on your feet and what sounds like a better place.
2nd, as a small business owner I am constantly amazed by how these large chains operate and manage to stay in business for so many years. It just baffles me that they closed the one store, opened up in a new location in the same shopping center, then closed the doors for the whole operation. There had to be someone higher up on the corporate food chain that should have said; “maybe we should hold off on the Stamford store until after the new year.”
Thank you. Wife’s job wasn’t in jeopardy but the opportunity was too good to pass up.
I hear what you are saying. To explain it a bit better. The LL threw us out of the old location in 2023 to make room for other tenants. Their plan all along was to move us to half of the old Bed Bath location. It took awhile to get the lease signed and do all the work. The LL footed 100% of the construction cost there. They didn’t tell me the cost but I’d wager about a million. So in all reality it didn’t cost PC much to open that building. We owned the fixtures and most of the merch.
Bottom line the LL got screwed. They now have a brand new 10K sq ft box built to Party City prototype. The next tenant will want to remodel it at some cost to the LL either via tenant allowance or them doing the work.

Big businesses seldom communicate between departments. One department was responsible for setting up a new location while another department was trying to find a way to avoid bankruptcy, and didn't succeed. Two separate divisions that don't communicate.....that is the way it works...I have seen it happen a lot. It's like a car dealership, the new car department, the used car department, sales and service are separate departments and work independently.
after a lot of digging through fb marketplace listings, and some interesting messenger conversations, went and looked at one today and made a deal. so will pick up a used one next Saturday AM. Conveniently, less than a mile from my house which will make it vastly easier since I have to import labor (my son) to get it into the house. The guy that has it offered to come and help get it off the truck (after helping load it at his house) and into the garage, which was nice of him but not really useful. If we need help to get up the steps into the house I will go knock on the neighbor's door.
definitely the cost-effective way to go. about 15% of the cost of buying a comparable new unit. Like buying beater cars. If it only lasts 1-2 years, just keep buying replacements!
So what did you buy, a beater truck?

probably should have included that detail. I made a deal on a used Elliptical. If I could have gotten a 1/2 ton PU for 85% off sticker I would have bought that too.

———————————————— That thing probably needs a lot of body work but if everything else checks out it could be a good deal for someone that can do the work themselves but only if you can buy it for 7K. Might even want to start out at 6.5K. Rust is worse than needing a valve job.

I like that spec of a truck. But would want a pro to explore the frame. I have seen a lot of that vintage truck with serious frame rust. The bed wheel lips all seem to rust out like that. Not a huge deal (they make replacement patch panels, and most people throw a set of cheap plastic flares on top) if that is all the rust. Odds are it isn't. Door bottoms and cab corners can go also.
And not sure if that year is one of the variable displacement motors that have all the problems (I think that is VCM issues, I know there is something with those motors that you definitely want turned off!)

In this part of the country rust is inevitable. The key thing is the frame. I’ve personally owned trucks that looked horrible but had solid frames with just surface rust. Cab mounts need to be checked too. It all depends on what you want, a junk hauler or a country club cruiser.
Bring your flashlight, a screwdriver and something to lay on when you crawl underneath. When I bought my truck that’s where the salesman found me, tapping the frame to check for corrosion.

Well the guy says in his ad that it’s both a v6 (ha ha he corrected it 10 minutes ago) and a v8 so maybe you get to pick which engine you want. 😂 I guess it’s real easy to see if you have problems with the Active Fuel Management system by listening for a tick on cold startup. Chevy had that since around 2007 and you would think they’d have found a fix by now. As I understand it, the AFM problem is related to poor maintenance so any oil change records would be valuable.

Want to help disaster victims? I personally donate to Matthew 25 Ministries, based in Cincinnati. They are always responding to disasters and get mentioned on my morning talk radio show through the years as they solicit for materials and money as they left for relief help. Their truck was a couple miles away after the Memorial Day tornado went through our area a few years ago.
And there's Samaritan's Purse that I've trusted to get money and help where needed in the past.
If you chose to help, pick carefully. There are scams everywhere.

While folks down south were having some unusual winter activity, we were having the opposite sort of unusual winter activity! It was warm (above freezing) for three straight days, with rain aplenty during that time. The roads were mostly all ice rinks even though the rain wasn't freezing on impact, it was saturating the snow pack and resulting in *very* slippery conditions.
My son and I spent the majority of Saturday evening recovering vehicles, and even taking them home in many cases. I think we ended up assisting ten different vehicles in one way or another, including pulling a couple of full size pickups to the top of their respective driveways.
