Huh. And here I was about to jump in and tout the benefits of Verizon. MY SO and I just switched from AT&T and Sprint, respectively, to Verizon. We're much happier with the coverage overall, and especially the 4G. I had a 4G Sprint phone for 2-1/2 years and never once got 4G service, it was so limited. I can't speak personally for AT&T, but my SO has the new iPhone 5, and says the combo of that + the Verizon network provides a much faster, better experience for him.

AT&T wasn't a disaster for him like Sprint was for me, though. I would frequently get text messages a day later (snail mail would have been equally fast in some cases), and would often find myself with zero bars, even in populated areas.

Well Charlie, this is what I mean when I say most of my problems are with the carrier...I have att at home for the wifi and verizon for the mobile phone.....The signal is the iffy thing most of the time...I`m so use to it that I just assume it is the carrier, and it is :-)

You should test the Fusion Econi out, just for a test....I promise it is a fun experience...Tony

Bottom line is all carriers have problems and it is worse depending on location(s). I have ATT and have had the same type of problems as reported by Cyclone. What gets me is that in my laundry room I have "2 bars" and in the middle of nowhere in Maui I had "5 bars". Go figure.

Complaints to either the carrier or manufacturer usually are blamed on each other...this also really galls me.

OTOH - my wife's employer announced no price or coverage changes for all health plans this year.

IMHO, any insurer or employer announcing ACA to change plans and premiums is just using it as convenient excuse. Saying costs are rising, claims are higher, et al have all been used too often in the past.

If they just came out and said "hey you can get insurance on your own now" would be more respectable.

Our plan changed slightly, to conform with ACA regs...

But, prices and coverage balance out, pretty much... I like the changes made... no complaints here...

I would venture that most that are seeing price increases had crappy coverage and their old plans wouldn't qualify. So, price is up, but so is the coverage. For those that had decent plans before, it is pretty much status quo...

Nationally, the average increase is upwards of 30%. Your results may very...a lot.

I don't think the big company sponsored plans have to convert until 2015, so those with company plans should not see much change for 2014, but hold onto your hats in 2015.

AFAIK, large employers without insurance options have until 2015 before having to pay fines if one employee qualifies for ACA.

Perhaps the difference with my plan is that I'm in MA where we have had state compliant plans and served as the basis for ACA.

Here in the northeast, we are pretty spoiled by our health plans. I know relatives in states like OK are shocked at how poor their health insurance is when compared to what we have. Now of course ask them to pay $200 a week for my plan (compared to $40 for their plan) and they balk.

    Tony,

What is the Fusion Econi? On the Ford Website I have seen the Fusion Energi SE, Fusion Energi Titanium, etc. I have not seen the Econi? In any case, I do want to try out these electric/hybrid Fusions. They seem pretty awesome.

I find with Windows products many times the newer versions will run slower on the older hardware. I keep what ever was used OEM and wait till I buy a new computer to go to the newer OS. I understand there is a lot of unhappy people that have upgraded from Win7 to Win8 as well. Win8 was really developed for touch screen use. Always some irritation with electronic devices. I'm still looking for the perfect solution to all my computer needs.

    NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Apple fanatic Whitney just replaced her iPhone 5. When we asked her about, if you didn't know any better, you might think she was talking about a family member; she said it's her everything.

She is not the only New Yorker who feels this way.

That is perhaps why it's so troubling, the NYPD says, that Apple products are among the biggest targets for thieves.

The NYPD says that in 2012, nearly 20 percent of all burglaries, robberies and grand larcenies involved apple products. In total almost 16,000 apple items were stolen. That is 14 percent of all the crime in the city.

You are right Energi The auto makers around the world have many great cars, and this Ford is just a different type of experience......I have read recently, that some people are convinced this type of propulsion is the thing for the future, and I agree....I`m just experimenting and did my first two year lease, but I can sure say this type of propulsion is what I will buy from now on...I would like a nicer type of materials on the inside, but all in all I`m fine with what it is....By leasing it became a non event financially.....The Europeans are way behind on this :-) Tony

And all of a sudden we are getting flooded with Apple predictions that will take out its old $705 highs in 6 months or so, pump $55-60bln of record cash flow in the next year - up from $45bln this year, put out a 13" iPad (which I will buy immediately if that rumor is real), have several high end phones of different sizes and the never ending rumor of an OLED very high end 4K TV that changes the dynamics of the living room. The whole Wall street notion of a cheap iPhone I hope is history. Buyers want high end from Apple and are willing to pay for it. You also have the huge China mobile opportunity and now Apple has more strength in that negotiation. I can see Apple easily reaching $800-900 next year. Whoever got it at $388 got an absurdly low price on the best company in America. And whoever thinks Tim Cook is a bad manager is out of their minds.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Dominican Republic everyone. We are very happy to escape the early season frigid weather in the Midwest.

Len, I've been thinking that AAPL will reach $600 by the end of the year. I think I posted as such a few weeks ago. The Holiday Season for Apple will be nothing short of phenomenal. It will be a record!

This is huge news for Apple investors in my opinion. I realize that some of this was probably already in the market as AAPL rallied quite a lot lately, but I still believe that AAPL will trade at least $15 higher tomorrow. The news came out after the "after hours" trading closed so it will be interesting to see what happens in the "pre hours" trading late tonight and very early in the morning.

Ignore the AAPL Hype – 3 Reasons Apple Stock Is Still a Sell

In fact, AAPL stock recently dug its way back into black for the year-to-date period thanks to a 26% climb since mid-September. Those recent gains for Apple stock are nearly four times those of the broader market.

As a result, lot of talking heads — including a few here at InvestorPlace — have jumped back on the AAPL bandwagon, saying that it’s once again time to snatch up Apple stock.

But while the deal with China Mobile (CHL) is promising and Apple does continue to make great products, I’m still skeptical that AAPL stock is worth your money in the current mid-$500 range.

Here are three reasons why Apple stock is still a sell.

  • houdini1houdini1 Member Posts: 8,351
Probably most of us have some unrealized losses in our portfolio. It might be a good idea to sell those positions before the end of the year to claim those losses. If it is a stock you are in love with, sell it anyway, and just buy it back after the first of the year.

Merry Christmas and Happy investing. :)

How long is the waiting period before you can buy the stock back if you so choose? I think it used to be 30 days but that may have changed.

  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805

  • hpmctorquehpmctorque Member Posts: 4,600
So, you should wait at least 31 days before buying a stock back in which you took a loss, to avoid a wash sale.

Lots of folks are awash in cash, as is Apple. What do you do with it? It continues to be worth less and less sitting in the banks. I still remember what happened to Apple after Jobs got booted first time. Just reading about Gateway. Their stock hit $84 per share in 1999. They sold out to ACER in 2007 for $1.90 per share. Electronics are anything but stable. Apple has all those $billions offshore. They can't bring it back without losing about 45% in state and federal taxes. So what will they do with it that makes money?

That is the first time I have ever watched that Cramer guy. I could not take more than 2 minutes. He is a horrible communicator. How did he get on TV? More reason I quit watching in 2006. Nothing worth watching but Duck Dynasty and Drive-ins, Diners & Dives. ;-)

I wish you all the luck with Apple. I just don't see the upside you all are seeing. Then I am a Bear on this economy and market as a whole.

Listening to Cramer get around the problem of his past condemnation for using his shows or newsletters to affect his own funds or business is the reason he keeps talking about his "trust" having bought this or that. Listening to him is like listening to some of the WH folks explain things, e.g., the now mayor of Chicago. Careful listening is needed to hear the spin.

From Wiki--search cramer wiki. The whole article has parts making Cramer a questionable guru:

" During that time, he was also an "editor at large" for SmartMoney magazine, and was accused of unethically combining his investing and reporting activities when he bought more of stocks that he recommended just before the recommendation article came out, contributing to a $2 million personal gain.[16] Today, Cramer is barred by CNBC from trading stocks with his personal funds although he makes picks and sells his recommendations."

That was the first time I have watched Cramer on video. He comes across to me as a sleazy used car salesman. He could do well in a sit com playing the car salesman. I did not know he was a shady character with ethics issues. Needless to say he did not give me any reason to believe Apple is a safe buy. The company has lots of cash and very little depth, IMO. You have to love Apple products to even consider the stock. The China deal sounds good. Will the Chinese people opt for the iPhone over the many great Android phones for less money.

But analysts disagree as to how many new China Mobile customers are woo-able. Some already have older Apple products, and many, many others are too poor to afford such an expensive purchase. Some customers may decamp from China Unicom and China Telecom, much like those US customers who left AT&T T -0.18% for Verizon when the latter finally could sell the iPhone. But the transplants who simply swap a competitor’s iPhone for one on China Mobile won’t increase Apple’s total install base.

Ultimately, we’re left with more questions than answers. Check out the wide range of opinion among analysts in recent days. Here’s what each research group projects for Apple’s incremental gain in sales for the next year due to China Mobile:

What's Up with China Mobile and Apple??

_AAPL stock took a 1.8 percent hit in pre-market trading as China Mobile not only failed to announce its iPhone launch today as had been expected, but its chairman Xi Guohua specifically told reporters that the world’s largest carrier had no announcement to make.

While neither Apple nor China Mobile ever officially confirmed today as the launch date, the Chinese government confirmed the date as the one on which 4G service would begin, China Mobile had said it would launch “a new brand” today and the WSJ seemed confident last month that today was the day.

The deal has been a very long time in the coming, but all the pieces of the puzzle looked to have

    fallen into place … _

Need some advice here...finally am getting my small inheritance on Friday and besides getting some tax free muni bonds, not sure where to put about $10k where I can get some decent growth. Right now I have some ATT, Ameren, a utility stock, some BP and some AGNC, American Capital Agency. Apple is really to high to get into right now but I would like a decent return going forward. Probably best to just increase my positions in the few I've got and stay the course here. But the muni's are to keep the wife happy since she wants me to have some tax free stuff. Am using her broker and he sounds pretty knowledgeable even though he is in New Jersey.

Hi sandman - you should be investing as part of an overall diversified portfolio. If you want growth (as opposed to income) you need to be able to accept risk as well. Realize that no broker knows what will happen in the market and if they are comissioned their first job is to sell clients. I would be cautious and consider your risk tolerance in light of your entire portfolio, seeking proper diversification. Good luck!

Now that I am retired, income is a very important goal for us. Though I found the perfect part time gig, moving rental vehicles around the state, I do not want to work forever so income is very important and the wife wants me to do some tax free income vehicles. Understand about diversification and risk tolerance but was just asking for some more concrete guidance as I know there are folks much more knowledgeable in this forum than myself, a relative newbie in the investment game. Finally am receiving some long awaited funds that I need to put to work earning income.
Thanks for any help guys and just reading tje posts has been very informative!

How do you plan to protect your family estate? Just reading this article on family trusts set up in South Dakota. I think Joe Kennedy kind of set the standard for off shore trusts that protect family assets from estates taxes etc.
