THIS GUY HAD A PROBLEM CAR, IT HAPPENS AND NOT JUST TO TOYOTA. HAVING PURCHASED A SEQUOIA LIMITED 4X4 I SADLY MUST AGREE WITH HIM. EVERYDAY IS ANOTHER PROBLEM AND I AM STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SALESMAN ON L.I.
I guess those standard tires just aren't made to last. I had to replace the factory originals at 27k miles, thought they would last a bit longer but no. I now have Michelins for just under $600 at Costco. These puppies should last more than double the last ones. Other than that, not to happy with the plastic "trim" parts coming off to easily. The Sequoia runs fine and tows quite well. 2002 SR5
Well "ibmindless" (you said it not me). You posted the EXACT message on the Sequoia Problems and Solutions board over a week ago.I guess you needed to repost here because?????
Let's see...bad A/C..yep existing TSB. Brakes/rotors/Pads...yep existing TSB. Booming bass/little volume...yep existing TSB. Crunching windows....nope, no TSB. Kids eating cereal in the back of the car? :^) Alignment/balancing/tires toast in 14K miles!!! I'm running the same tires at 14K right now and they have PLENTY of life left....and I'm towing a 24' camper. Sounds like bad driving habits. In summary, your Toyota dealership screwed up! It's incredibly unusual for ONE vehicle to suffer from all 3 of these TSB problems, but they are addressed by Toyota Corp. That being said, these are mechanical devices made by humans in Indiana. They might fail, but statistically, the Sequoia is less likely to have a problem than other full size SUVs.
Just made a deal yesterday on an 04 Limited and will be picking it up next week. I plan on taking it for a test drive before I hand over the checks to make sure everything is OK. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should pay particular attention to on the final inspection?
I am thinking of purchasing a cargo liner with cut out for the 3rd seat. Does anyone have suggestions on where to buy one? Does the cut out work well around the 3rd seats or are they a awkward fit? Thanks.
Just curious. I like the Sequoia, but it's style is a little bland for me. I'd still probably buy it, but was hoping a major redesign might be in the works for '05. If so, I can wait. Any speculation as to what they'll change?
I want to order a 2004 SR5 with monochrome paint. I don't care for having the fender flares a different color. A Toyota salesman told me that all SR5's have different color flares except the Silver color has grey flares that almost match. Is this true? Do I have to get a Limited to get what I want?
I'm in the market for an 04 and I've looked at all combinations. There are black, white and silver Sequoia's with color keyed fenders. Check out Carmax.com. They put pictures of the actual vehicle on there website. They have SR5's with the same color fenders. I've only seen those three colors and I don't know what option package lets you get them.
I can understand how you are feeling. Seems like once you own one of these beasts, they kinda *own* you too, and you'll not be happy driving anything less, IMO.
I am *thinking* of trading up/down (depends on how one looks at it) my '01 Seq for an '00 LX470. I do love my Sequoia, but feel that the LX is a much better car/truck than the Seq can ever be. Hence my move. Besides, once you own a Lex, you are hooked, you just want more and more....lol. My mistake was to buy an LS400 last year, now I want the LX to replace my Seq. I will give up a tiny weebit of size but the quality, refinement and lux features of the LX is unbeatable. I already have a bite from a dealership for my '01, for $22K. I will see if I can get a better deal otherwise I'll sell it myself.
Hope you get back into the *fold* soon. The '04's are arriving at dealerships, but rumor has it that the big change is expected for MY '05. Maybe you can wait, No ?
My 02 SR5 with 27K started making a whining noise from the rear-end between 40 and 60 mph. Wierd but it's a hollow sound like someone blowing in a bottle. It's intermittent and disappears above 60 but will usually happen when slowing down on highway to 50 mph for a turn/ramp. Seems that it would be something in the differential since it appears when entering the turn. Was told by service that it's "normal" but doubt it so am readying for a battle with Toyota. I'm considering changing the fluid. Any ideas out there?
I posted this same problem in the Problems and Solutions Sequoia forum but have had no reply and thought some of you Sequoia owners here could help me. I own a 2002 SR5 that makes a squealing sound when I turn sharply to the left. The dealer has been unable to fix it and on my last visit two days ago said that there was nothing that they could do and that every Sequoia in their shop squeals like this. I am having trouble buying this excuse. On a prior visit they told me it was the rear axle seal that caused the squeal and they replaced this under warranty but it did not solve the problem - the squeal seems to be coming from the front, not the rear anyway.
So, do any of you Sequoia owners experience the squeal when you turn sharply. It is the sound of someone squealing tires at a high rate of speed but it is happening typically when I pull into parking spaces or do a u-turn at almost idle speeds. I get lots of stares in parking lots. Not good PR for the Sequoia.
Toyota employees a bunch of people in Valenciennes, so guess you better cross the Sequoia off your list too. Good luck trying to buy anything that doesn't have a global component these days.
It is probably your tires. My general motors product did the same thing when the tires were slightly worn. I have a 2002 SR5 and have not experienced any squealing. I would take it to a tire store and have them look at it and get a new dealership to service your truck. They are full of crap.
So... you got the Sequoia to make up for having a mouse gun? So, logically you could have a FAL to go with a RAV4 right? LOL!!! (just kidding. I'm trying to figure a way to keep this on topic while at the same time discussing my other hobby)
Long ago, in a land far away, I carried a CAR15 for the better part of a year. Absolutely loved it. It NEVER jammed or failed in any way. Couldn't say the same for those #$@%&* M60 doorguns.
[Steve, et al; I know this is off topic but please forgive me just this once :-D]
A lot of black gun owners seem to hang out in the Sequoia topic! Maybe we could have a survey: "How many pre-bans can you fit in the cargo area of your Sequoia?" Or perhaps a totally new topic, "What color Sequoia looks best with the G3?"
I own a white SR5 and was thinking of adding a bug shield. I would like to see some photos of bug shields installed on SR5 especially on a white SR5. Also, do these install easily and where is the best place to purchase one? I just installed a cargo mat and LOVE IT!!!!!! Thanks for all the information that I gathered on this site.
There is a white Limited on the cover of the 2003 Sequoia Accessories dealer pamphlet with a bug shield. I'm still shopping around for one as they're close to $200 from the dealer. For that price, it better be made of kevlar. Let me know if you find one.
I purchased a bug shield for my 2001 Sequoia, White, Limited in 7-2001. It is made by Lund, Intercepter Model. I paid $59.00. It is very flimsy, compared to other Lund bug shields I have installed in my other trucks. I would look for a more sturdy one If I were to replace it. It can be painted to match the vehicle color. Installation instructions were well written, even including a hex key to tighten the screws.
We took our 2001 Sequoia on a road trip to Hamburg, PA. It was a real nice ride. We stopped at the new Cabela's store while we were there. Thought of you. It's a real nice ride in any Toyota.
I used to be a fan of these. That is, until Toyota started contouring them so close to the hood. They still keep bugs off the leading edge of the hood, but they do nothing for the windshield. On my old T100, there was a pronounced lip at the top and I got very few bugs on the windshield. On the Tundra (same basic contour as the Sequoia), that lip is almost gone and the bugs splat the windshield. The hood shield just doesn't interrupt the air flow enough IMHO.
If anyone is interested, I just purchased a 4 piece set of the Sequoia door sill protectors at http://www.toyotaparts4u.com They are only $23.99. Never saw them priced that low.
Just purchased a new 2003 SR5. Was wondering how many lights in the rear blink when the turn signal is on? Only one yellow/orange light blink when I have on my rear turn signal. What got me to notice this was cars did not appear to see that I was turning and nearly cut me off. I want to know does only one light blink while the turn signal is on? Or should others also blink?? Thanks
Been in my '03 SR5 2WD for 6 months now. Mechanically - not a worry. My only complaint...CHEAP INTERIOR PLASTIC. Rear Interior Side Panels forever gouged after our 1st roadtrip with gear in back, plastic seat bolt covers that continously fall off (& out of the truck when I open the door, and a rear compartment door/cover that won't stay snapped shut with only the weight of a set of jumper cables.
All in all - I guess it could be considered more of a nuisance vs. a problem...just frustrated that a Toyota skimpped on the plastic interiors.
But "Pick Your Battles" After visting the Service Bulletins for Seqouia vs. Tahoe / Yukon...it's laughable...Minor Nuisance items for Toyota and major recall, mechanical, and even missing parts issues for Chevy/GMC.
I'll take cheap plastic over expensive mechanical failures any day. Darn so close to perfection...just that dang cheap plastic!
I am starting to shop for a car for my soon to be 15 year old daughter. Honda Accord coupe and Toyota Solara are on the short list, I know Honda does not offer roadside, but I thought my last Toyota had it - It needed to be towed several times - maybe it was covered by the dealership.
Any idea why Honda and Toyota don't have roadside coverage? - Acura and Lexus both do as well as almost every other manufacturer.
I hope you noted the smilie on my last post on this topic. Honda and Toyota are in VERY competitive segments. It is their opinions that consumers would rather save $100 or so on the price, rather than get roadside assistance. Lexus is a different story because of the customer expectations on price versus service.
Toyota does give you the roadside assistance if you buy one of the pre-paid maintenance agreements, but not with the warranties.
We've just returned from the annual Car & Truck Show and have decided that we are still very much in love with our 2001 4wd Limited. At 50,000+ miles we've hit a few bumps in the road but we're hoping to ride out many years and miles together.
Hey you wont be diappointed with either the Solara or Accord. I bought daughter number 1 a 1998 accord. Today 120,000 miles and one minor hose leak. I bought daughter number 2 a 1999 Solara. Today 50,000 miles and no trouble at all. Both of these cars are 4 cyl.(plenty for teenagers.)The Accord a slight advantage on mpg. The Solara an advantage on quietness. To keep this on topic, I truly enjoy driving my 02 Sequoia as much as my 78 cj7.
Doing some research on superchargers. Anyone on this board have it installed in their Sequoia ? TRD claims up to 100 hp increase...is that for real ? Is the $4000 investment justifiable in your opinion (that's just for the parts) and what did you pay for installation ? Thanks.

PS I thought tidester_Host comment was fine.
It's a pity that you're still in the middle of such an awful ordeal. You have my sympathy and sincere wishes for a good resolution.

kimber would be another choice. Love those 1911s.
BTW: I use the AR15 name as I have a passion for my Bushmaster XM15 E2S M4.

I think we should leave the assault rifle discussion to another time and place.

Getting 25 MPG city would be sweet.

I wouldn't worry about it but don't make a habit out of it!
