I have four kids, leather is much easier to clean up. Cloth absorbs spills. Our SEQ has the Oak interior, very nice. We had front heated seats added for $600, dealer picked up $300.
Deatils please. Was your net out of pocket $300 or $600? I assume for both seats? I assume they were Toyota heaters not aftermarket? Any idea of how long it took? Did Toyota national get involved? I assume there was no negative impact to look and feel of resultant seat.
Go ahead - spend your money on leather if its that important to you. It's your money (or rather, soon to be Toyota's!). Cloth works for me - I still get to the same place, the same time, with my money still stuck in my pocket. Using your kids to justify your purchase - how quaint. Look at the two choices and make up your mind like an adult. And don't ask about the heated mirrors or running boards next either!
I too looked at all three vehicles and chose the MDX. I'm not here to bash the SQ, but krisko was wrong on a couple of points. The MDX w/ Touring Package MSRPs for $39450 (not $42K as krisko posted). It is the loaded SQ Ltd that MSRPs at about $42000. At the time we bought there were no discounts available on SQs, so the MDX was significantly cheaper. As far as exclusivity goes there will only be about 35-40K MDXs built this year.
We also own an Expy (for sale now) and the size comparisons are very deceptive. Second row seating is more or less equal among all three. MDX has superior cargo room with the 3rd seat stowed (folds flat in MDX, tilts in Expy and SQ). Granted MDXs third seat is smaller but it is more than adequate for us. We are not concerned with towing. MDXs superior handling and gas mileage is nice as well.
Domination depends on which forum you're writing on. Over in MDX you'll read MDX completely dominates this segment. Can both be right? Of course because that is a subjective judgement. Every owner bought what was best for them at the time. As far as engines go, I don't have to kid about replacing the MDX engine. Objective testing has proven it has superior acceleration, gas mileage and emissions. Indeed MDX is ULEV rated in all 50 states.
Also the MDX has won virtually all the major media awards this year, not the SQ. To me and many others it is the clear winner. I have no doubt that resale value will be quit good for this award winning SUV.
Lots of pros and cons (easy clean-up with kid's spills being a big pro): Leather Seat Maintenance Steve Host Vans, SUVs, and Aftermarket & Accessories message boards
Leather seats are definitely subjective, however with your reasoning, which is mine as well, leather makes more sense with children, no matter what someone else just so eloquently (Ha, Ha)objected to a few postings ago.
If you have the money for leather seats, then I'd say get them.
Have you ever sat in an automobile with cloth seats that was owned by a family with two or more kids? It's disgusting. With cloth the juice does get soaked in and the cheerios do get mooshed into the seats...and I haven't even gotten to the smell of it all yet!!
Do what you feel is in your best interest. Not only considering the kids, but also financially.
Again it is a subjective matter and if you're going to keep this vehicle for any kind of length of time, I would also think the leather would hold up better.
Dforr, as the mother of three kids (5, 9, and 10, all of whom are very conscientious about keeping our cars clean) and having 4 cars in our household, I can tell you one thing: there is no need to "use kids" to justify the need for leather. The need is present. Both cloth and leather have their pros and cons, but we have a 97 XLT Explorer with leather - a Godsend. Three kids with dirty jeans, pants, hands, shirts, jackets, and more. Food at times, drinks, you name it. I cringed when the decision was made for the most recent car: the PT Cruiser Limited. I ordered it last Spring, and it was finally delivered to us about 6 weeks ago. They have a suede/leather combination seating arrangement... and I was and am still concerned for the suede's lifespan vs. the leather. Needless to say, the other two cars with cloth need continual hard care with spills and dirty areas that are unavoidable.
Leather, all the way. If it were cost-worthy to add leather to my little "commuter" Echo car, I'd do it in a hot second. It's just not a good investment to add leather to an Echo, LOL!
I was able to get it with a sunroof, side air bags and rear spoiler for 2500 over invoice. the dealer I dealt with deals over the interned. their web page is www.hudsontoyota.com. I am really enjoying it. the best part is there isn't 1 sequoia on every street corner. when I purchased my honda accord, it felt like every third car was a honda. The sequoia rides great. I was on the highway doing 65 and it felt like I was doing 30. very smooth ride. I test drove a gray limited and they tried to push that one on me. for that kind of money you should get what you want. I told them I only wanted silver and they called me the next day to come pick it up. good luck.
I am shopping for a new SUV and I am looking at the various kinds of 4WD, AWD etc. Can someone tell me what the "Modes" are on the Seq and how they work? Can you drive on dry pavement in 4 hi like a Perm 4WD type vehicle?
On my first SUV with leather, seats, my son managed to keep is clean but really kinda wore it out after less than 2 years.
Second SUV, I treated seats with good leather protector and place large color coordinated towel on the seat, so far not unusual wear. One should also place towel under toddler seat or boosters.
You would think in this world that the customer rules, however, very few if any Mfgs, offer vinyl seats, which are more practical than leather with kids. However consumers I would think it should be a no charge as is cloth seats and MFGS would make less money.
I'll post this and then move any further discussion to the Leather Seats discussion group that Steve_Host alerted us to. You should definitely read the posts in this group, no matter your preference or status of children in the car!
I've had good experiences with cloth for the last two SUVs with three kids as well, making it successfully through the Cheerios and juice box stages. Chicken nuggets and french fries also caused no damage. The most interesting experience was bringing home the new Jeep Grand Cherokee from the dealer and having my son dump a chocolate ice cream cone jelly side down right on the cloth seat! While I cringed at the time, I still laugh about this one - no permanent damage, just a quick clean after we got home.
I know you have your hands full. I have three with the same spacing as yours. Although mine are a little older now; 13, 17, 18.
I concur, get leather if you can aford it. Younger children, and their parents will spill stuff into the seats. Cloth seats can get very nasty. I find that leather is easier to take care of. Leather or cloth, I would recommend that you put something on the seats to cover them when using car seats.
Edmunds TMV for the Sequoia needs to be updated, as these vehicles can be ordered 2500 below retail.Edmunds lists these vehicles at full retail and I have ordered one at 2500 below retail.
To MSU79gt82 The vehicle I ordered is a loaded sr5 with leather package, upgrade radio, wheel package, roof rack,2 wheel drive.I ordered at the end of the month bypassing floor salesmen going to the internet fleet manager.I had to go to 4 dealerships before finding anyone willing to deal.Check other posts on prices paid and you will see it can be done.My condolences for the Ford you own as I own a E150 van that has been problems from day one and I am talking major expensive problems. Good luck in finding a fair price on the Sequoia if you are looking to buy.
Edmunds TMV is meant to show what a pretty good deal is nationwide. It does not mean that a person can't do better and there are certainly areas which will be worse. Its an average. Your deal pulls the average down.
For dianne4toyota: is the grade of leather in the SR5 the same as in the Limited, or for that matter, the Landcruiser? I am asking because I would like to see it but our dealer does not have an SR5 with leather on his lot, but has a Landcruiser.
<Edmunds_Moderator> TomG: I live in Wisconsin...but was playing around with the TMV tool and found that when I put in different zip codes, I got different amounts for my car. Why is that?
<TMV_Team> TomG: We have determined that location is also a key driver of value.
<TMV_Team> An example: a convertible in Minnesota vs. southern CA.
Note that you have to "Price Your New Vehicle" to customize your TMV for your area. Popular rigs like the Sequoia may be similarly priced across the country, and like cliffy1 says, sometimes you can do better (the dealers aren't obligated to accept TMV either). Steve Host Vans, SUVs, and Aftermarket & Accessories message boards
Tuscaloosa Toyota at $500 over invoice, Landcrusier at invoice and 4runner at $1,000 below invoice. Reading this board tells me the prices are coming down. In my area, the Chevrolet dealer has Suburbans lined up and that has been a fast moving vehicle. I wonder if potential purchasers are as concerned about the Sequoia engine as I am or is the economy slowing to a halt.
"Ya'll seem to prefer silvers with gray leather for your SR5's that I can see so far!"
Well when the other choices are, IMHO, contrasting fenders "Hey! Look at my fenders!" and chocolate brown plastic straight out of the 1970's, the decision got down to silver/grey real fast. It's hard to believe that a multi-billion dollar car company can miss the mark this bad but this is my first foreign car and maybe the disconnect with modern American taste is par for the course.
I completely agree with Thirdsuv on the SR5 color choices given by a multi-billion dollar car company - the two tone Thunder gray is horrible- the colors don't go together - I have not seen the other "two tones" on the road, only on the Toyota site - guess that's because no one is buying them !!! I don't want to spend nearly 40,000 on an SUV and have to settle for a color!!! Dianne, have you seen either the jade combo, red (is it more of a red or burgundy?) or black SR5 in person? I know you said the solid jade Limited was too green, but the jade with gray doesn't look bad on the Toyota site. Please let me know. Thanks!
The SR5 desert Sand Mica looks pretty nice. The fender flare color difference is enough so that it doesn't look like a mismatch, but close enough that it blends nicely. It also matches nicely with the oak interior. In my area I have seen the two tone black on the road - not bad - the blue once - ugh - and the Silver Sky a few times - nice as well. I saw the green SR5 at a dealer and thought it looked kind of Eddie Bauerish.
I was considering ordering (and wait forever) a 4x2 with leather, moon roof, running boards. Our company has purchased many cars from this dealer. They would take a special order at 3% over invoice. I would only benefit a few time a years from 4x4, so I think a 4x2 will be fine. I would save thousands, about 35K out the door. Is this a wise decision?
I haven't signed my name on the dotted line so I wanted to get feedback on the following deal my dealer has offered me on the following; Limited 4x4 Jade Mica/Oak SE,EJ,GY,RS,RL,SR Price Offered-$42,700 MSRP-$44,700
Can anyone comment on if this a good deal? I'm located in New Jersey. One other note, I have a contact at the port that pointed me to the regional Toyota office who in turn spoke to this dealer about helping me out but not sure if they are really doing me a favor.
Read tundra solutions re. the Tracs on 4*2's. some people wished they had opted for the 4*4. At that price unless you never experience a lot of rain or snow, go with the 4*4. Thats a great deal.

randu: $2000 off MSRP is what I got in December and I have not had any reason to question the deal I got. Based on posts over the past couple of months I would say that you are getting a good cash deal. Since I have no idea about a trade in you might be making I couldn't tell if you are being treated fairly on the other end. I say go for it! It's a great truck.
Up to the north in Seattle we have Suburbans all over the place. I dealer by my office still shows a 3k+ market adjustment on the sticker, then advertises in the paper a fully loaded Lt for 34,200. Msrp of 42K. Thats at least 2k below invoice. He must have 12 Suburbans that have been on his lot for at least 3 weeks. According to a client of mine, you will pay invoice to 500 over if you are educated about the process. I think the slowing economy, layoffs and stock market drop has more to do with prices coming down in our area.. We don't even know if the Sequoia has an engine problem yet. Lets hope not anyway. The toyota dealer has about 10 Sequoia's on his lot, most the two tone SR5's that most people just don't like.
Has anyone out there actually purchased a Sequoia from Tuscaloosa for anywhere near that price? Both Dianne and Cliffy have told people to be cautious. Someone said they were having one delivered to their door for 300 over plus a couple hundred dollar deliver charge but they never posted back that they actually received the truck.
$2000 of MSRP appears to be a good deal. Is that a KBB or Edmund's calculation of MSRP? Almost $45000 sounds too expensive! Reminds me of krisko's post about SQ price vrs Acura MDX. I still maintain that no way is SQ worth over $3500 more than an Acura MDX. Thanks for the pricing update, I know the MDX was right for me.
All, What's sooooo bad about the Thunder Gray color, I have not seen it in person, but the SEQ book makes it look ok. What is the color of the fender treatments?
I have been reading the comments on the Toyota Sequoia with interest. THey helped me a lot in my purchase of a 4X4 limited. I purchased that on Dec 28 and have put in 5000 miles so far. I leased it with a purchase value of 41, 627 and a residual of 21 and change. IT is a 4 year lease through toyota motor lease. My payments are $673.45 with property taxes (it is quite high in RI). I truly enjoy the vehicle. IT is the best vehicle I have had. The acceleration is fantastic, it is very quite and comfortable. We have had 2-3 snowstorms and it has been very good in the snow. The mileage was 13 and has now improved to 14. My only complaint is that the vehicle is limited to a speed of 102 mph. Once again thank you for your comments on the vehicle. IF you need a new Sequoia dealers in RI are good. Call Colonial Toyota or Tarbox Toyota. THeir prices are very good!
I just looked at the Tuscaloosa Toyota site for 500 over invoice sale, prices look great they have a lot of SEQ's. But just one the thing, they are charging the JBL premium 3-in-1 combo: AM/CM/[non-permissible content removed]/in-dash 6 disc ad changer with 10 speakers as a $200 option. I thought that was standard in the Limited? Help me.
For those of you who are experiencing the loud diesel or "tapping" noise, I found this on another board. It looks like this guy hit paydirt with his dealer's fuel injector diagnosis...
******************************************* "IT'S FIXED!!! I now have no noise, no diesel, no tapping, no clicking, nothing.
Apparently the noise was coming from the injectors. My dealer insulated, small pads, around the wiring harness coming off the engine. They also put small pads on the wiring harness at the firewall. I believe around the wires and between the mounting bracket and the firewall. I gave it a quick glance under the hood and could not see the pads. The service manager said that differences in how tight the wiring and wiring harness are makes the difference on why some hear the noise and some do not.
It's awesome. I am a happy camper now. This truck had the diesel noise loud.
Don't know if this will solve everyone's problem, but I would encourage those with the "noise" to contact their dealer about insulating the injector wiring harness.
BTW, the dealer said that the oxygenated fuel had nothing to do with my noise." *****************************************
Get this idea to your dealerships' mechanics and see if this info helps. Certainly worth exploring.
The thunder gray color is fine, its the other color above the tires that doesn't match with the gray - we're referring to the SR5 not the Limited - the Limited is solid gray (which looks different in different lights).
I agree. I saw a Limited Thunder Gray on the lot and thought it was really nice.
It's the only SUV that I like and been able to find with a gray exterior and oak (tan) interior. I'm not a big fan of the light gray interior personally.
I thought the Chestnut Pearl was the color that looked awfully funny with the lighter colored fenders.
After seeing some of the colors in person like the Thunder Gray and seeing them on the web-site or even on the brochure, it is much prettier in person. I wouldn't count on the computer or brochure when making a color choice, you really need to see it in person.
We're hoping to purchase one of the 4WD in the summer and Thunder Gray is my only preference so far...and I'm quite particular.
does anyone know if its possible to purchase sr5 near dealer invoice plus ad. I almost had one bought for this price but backed out after sales mar. tried to charge me for undercoating and mirror glaze for the sum of an extra $599. I am in east n. and atlanta or nashville would be in my shopping area. I have seen ads around here for sr5 $1000 over dealer invoice.
hi - wondering if anyone could share their lease info on SEQ SR5 4X4 - down, number of months, negotiated price, residual, payment (tax if app), drive off, etc. I read on another board that Toyota residuals for 36 month was around 69% and 48 months 61% - this seems good and wondering if this jibes with real world leasing..
The in dash changer is a $200 option for all Sequoias including the Limited. To me the only color in the Limited nicer than Grey is the black, but I've already got a black Passat that is a biotch to keep clean. The gray seems to stay clean a lot longer.
Though thunder grey was my second choice (silver sky was first), I really like the contrasting fenders on mine....they're not supposed to "match" - that's why they're called "contrasting" - I actually prefer the muted contrast as compared to the bolder ones (like the blue or black). Color choices are obviously very subjective....
The "EJAT" combo will be on every limited Sequoia purchased in NC,SC,GA,AL,FL (that was not special ordered). Southeast Toyota distributors purchases these vehicle from the factory in certain combinations. I would be happy to provide anyone with the information needed to equip their new Sequoia with the correct factory equipment so you can make a well informed decision regarding options and price.
I know where you may purchase a new 2001 SR5 Thundergray MSRP 35060 Discount $3180.00 Sell price 31999.50 total including all fees etc(if you live out of AL.) I would be happy to email or fax any info about this to you. Contact scottbell@setdlr.com
Black with Oak Leather seems to be the best selling color in the Southeast for Sequoia. It looks great! I would say White and Silver come in next. Hey, they all look great! What a vehicle!
I like the silvers and thunder grays, and my fave combo is the blue marlin SR5 with the silvery bottom. It's unusual and turns heads... but they don't sit long here!
Heck, from my perspective, they all look great headed down the driveway with a registration in the window! The faster I sell them as they hit the ground, the more we get next time around.
