It's the only way to get running boards from the factory - at least the only way that I've been able to figure out. I've had SUVs with and without running boards - they are worth the investment.

WOW...you got a great deal...I sure wish I could get a deal like that. Thank you for the reply

I have been in contact with a higher up in the regional Northern California office regarding some "sales tactics" and I did ask him about the booming base. He at the time hadnt heard of this problem but contacted some Toyota solutions kinda folks. He called my yesterday to say that when I call the dealership regarding the BOOMING BASE to have them look up in their computer

    "TSB for Sequoias"

and they will find that there is a solution for the booming base.

So it seems as thought they are aware of this problem and have a solution.

I bought the 2WD Limited a month ago. The lartgest dealer in the area was selling ABOVE sticker. I went to a dealer in a nearby community and found what I was looking for. All told, based on the trade in, I got $2k off MSRP and "average trade-in" for the used vehicle. A co-worker just bought an SR5, and got a slightly better deal.

I went to my Toyota dealer last week to look at Land Cruisers. I saw the Sequoia and drove the demo off the lot. When my wife drove it she had to have it, and she did not like Land Cruisers (go figure). The demo had 9800 miles on it and when I returned it I offered invoice figuring that with the miles I was ok. The dealer wanted 1100 off sticker, so I walked. After looking around town it as clear that these cars were moving at sticker price, despite the premium added of several hundred over sticker. BTW I highly recommend renting the movie "Suckers" (about car dealers) although it does have graphic language and violence!
I went to carsdirect.com and bought a LTD the next day at 1700 off sticker. Maybe I could have gotten a better deal in a few weeks or months, but not by much. Plus on the web site, I ordered only the options I wanted. At the dealers you had to buy the cars as they came in, with stuff like bug deflectors on the hood and glass breakage sensors (I can tell if my glass is broken thanks). I have to wait 4 weeks to pick up my car, but it will have exactly all the options I want, including color.
For a hot car with limited inventory I highly recommend carsdirect.com. My sales associate is essentially an auto broker so he does all the arranging and paperwork, all I have to do is go pick up the car.
Anyone else use carsdirect.com? Anyone able to beat 1700 off MSRP with a fully loaded Limited 4WD?

We have had our Seq for 60 days now and absolutely love it. However, there are a few complaints and they are all in the convienence area. No memory seats, come on but the interesting one is the ability to roll down the rear window from the keyless entry control but not up. Is there a programming change that can be done? Also, I added a backup alarm. That works great to assist in backing the big boy. All help would be appreciated!!!
  • joeadpjoeadp Member Posts: 68
    Yes,

I used CarsDirect.com for an E320 and they delivered it to my driveway.

It was the best deal I could find at the time.
I would not hesitate in using them again.

Now lurking on this board buying a sequoia in 6 months. Looked at ML and Accura but liked the quality and size of this Toyota.

Best of luck with your purchase.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Uh...the glass breakage sensors are for the alarm system. The sensors "listen" for someone breaking/attempting to break the glass of your vehicle and then sounds the alarm. It's not there to tell you that your glass is broken ;-)

My dealer called yesterday and said the SR5 4WD I ordered on 011101 is in. Just so I'm not too surprised, how many miles should I expect to see on the odometer for a brand new car? I want to make sure that it's really new and hasn't been driven as a demonstrator a lot. Also, any tips at pickup time (I'm scheduled to go in tomorrow to get it). Thanks!

Doctorely, check out www.jimbarkleytoyota.com for advertised selling price of $4,151 off MSRP ON 4WD LTD.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The Sequoia normally will have 4 to 6 miles on it. Sometimes, we see closer to 20 right off the truck and it is my assumption that these are ones that are pulled from the line for QC inspection.

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY GOOD DEALERS IN S.CALIFORNIA WILLING ENOUGH TO CUT THE PRICE DOWN?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
If you live in Southern California, you owe it to yourself to see one of the active participants here. Vist Dianne at Carson Toyota. Not only has she been very active here, I know her prices are very competitive in that area. She can be contacted at dianne@earthlink.net

Talk to Dianne and/or see post 1161. Enjoy

FYI to all I think I may have experienced my first Sequoia tremor (ok vibration--it felt like I was riding over the botts-dots) as a I was accelerating from a light. I have about 350 miles on the 4X4 limited. Has there been any resolution to this issue? I could not find a resolution on sequoia solutions--with any luck maybe it was just the caffeine kicking in???

As for carsdirect in the San Diego area the difference between MSRP and selling price is only about $55.00

This should help answer all of the postings about the Sequoia's ability to tow. Trailer Boats magazine just awarded the Sequoia Tow Vehicle of the Year. Talk about an unbiased source that knows about towing! The comparison was with the Expedition 5.4 and the Tahoe 5.3.
The Sequoia scored 1st in 7 out of 10 towing categories. They were handling tongue weight, visibility, flatland towing, launch ramp, braking, ride/control,and fuel economy. The Sequoia also had the highest achieved speed in mountain towing on a 2%,4%,5%and 6%grade.
The Sequoia also scored 1st in 3 out of 5 non-towing categories.
I think this article highlights how there are many factors associated with towing, not just higher horsepower, torque and towing rating.
Factors such as braking, handling and ability to handle tongue weight are very significant.
FYI the boat towed for the test was a 23 foot SeaRay on a tandem axle trailer. Total towed weight was 5840 pounds. No modifications, sway bars or weight distributing hitches.
This is a serious and competent tow vehicle!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Towing 5840 lbs. makes this a serious tow vehicle? Ever towed before? Ever towed 14,000 lbs? Now that's serious. 5840 lbs. is NOT serious. Well maybe for the Sequoia it is.
  • 714cut714cut Member Posts: 355
Yes I tow on a regular basis. No I haven't towed 14,000 pounds. Do you really think anyone safely tows 14000 pounds with a sport utility vehicle? Do you tow 14000 lbs with a sport utility vehicle?
If you do may the force be with you!
You obviously chose to ignore one of the key points and that is there is more to being a serious tow vehicle than just tow rating! That rig you use to haul your 14000 lbs probably isn't very practical or comfortable for anything other than excessive towing. My comments pertained to previous posts about not being able to tow "over 2000lbs"etc.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
that being the case...I understand. When I had read "serious" and 5800 lbs. I didn't think it was serious. We use a Ford 450 to tow the 14000 lbs and it is more than capable as well as comfortable though slightly harder to park than a Sequoia but does better in a head on collision.

    Have a good day.....
  • thirdsuvthirdsuv Member Posts: 209
OK, you got us. Yes, we admit that a F450 will haul 14,000#'s better then a Sequoia. A F450 is an INDUSTRIAL vehicle. It's designed to work, WORK, WORK!!! Not by the wildest and most incoherent thinking can you say that it is a practical everyday family vehicle and family vacationer and makes sense to be compared to full-size SUVs.

I would guess that the number of Yukon/Expedition/Sequoia buyers who tow over
6000#'s is probably about 1 out of 1000.
I think Toyota made the right decision in ignoring that micro-niche market segment and
making the truck more drivable in everyday use.

    cheers,jim

It is awesome. I was driving a honda accord and thought it would be a big adjustment (from car to truck). Not at all. I got a fully loaded limited edition for 2,500 over invoice. The dealer was honest right from the start. I knew what the invoice was and thought he would send one that was marked up but he didn't. I am extremely happy with it. It runs great.

Sell the LX and get the Sequoia. Alos I wonder what a 2000LX470 with 8,500 miles is worth in the marketplace today and not what Kelly Blue Books states its woth..The reason for this can anyone say ..Lucent ..!!

Great Car. Purchased a Limited 5 weeks ago. Did a shake down run from Northern California to So. California, found 100mph is max speed. Trans kicks down all works as should, no more speed.... I'm sure it has a speed limiter. Anyone having the same problem. Any info on bypass. I don't normally drive at those speeds I just don't like to be Limited.

    Hello all,

I am considering the switch to synthetic motor oil and still have some sorting out to do. I have about 1400 miles on my Sequoia 4x4 Limited (no tapping noise YET) and I was wondering...

    1. How many miles before I should make the switch?

    2. Any brand better than another? If so - Why?

    3. Stick with 10-30W or maybe broaden the range to 5-30W or 10-40W?

    4. What about the SAE 0W5 stuff - any better?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have been driving minivans for ten years. It is time to trade this one in, but instead of another minivan, I am considering a Sequoia or Eddie Baur Expedition or other large SUV. Since so many more vehicles on the road are now higher-riding SUVs, I am not feeling as safe on the road with another minivan.

My problem is passenger space. With 2 kids, carpooling, dog and grandparents toting to dinner 2 or 3 times per month, we need 3rd row seating. I have tested all the new large SUVs and was most impressed with the Expedition and Toyota Sequoia. Although these are really impressively easy to handle, I am really not comfortable driving something as big as these. I also searched the midsize SUV market, but I haven't seen any with REAL back seat room. Many 2002 midsize SUVs are coming out with 3rd rows, but I don't know if I should wait to see how roomy they are compared to the Expe. and Sequoia. I just want some feedback about this 3-part delemma.

    1. Exped. vs Sequoia...which is better and why?
    2. Wait for the 2002 midsize SUVs
    3. Get another minivan with dependable ease for passengers.

Safety is my main concern, while the other needs above are to be factored in also.......someone help!

    Dianne or Cliffy,

Any word on any potential changes to the 2002 Sequoia. Wondering if its worth the wait to see if any bugs typical with new productions will be worked out, although I have not heard of many. Also, not at all crazy with the current color schemes on the SR5 packages - a little to Expeditioneske. Another complaint I have is that the driver side door has the protruding door handle(not on 4runner)making for inconveniences with electric windows, discomfort (forcing you to grip it when you want to lay your hand flat, etc. Also, I have trouble seeing the gauges in bright sunlight. I'm sure these may seem trivial, but before I secured an order on 2001, would like to confirm what changes will be made in 2002 given production will likely start soon. Any assistance you could provide would be appreciated.

We bought a very early Sequoia (Limited, with rear spoiler and traction control) in December (paid list!). Cargo volume (128 cu ft cargo capacity) was an important sellling point vs Expedition (111 cu ft). So I was surprised to see in the March issue of Automobile Magazine that Ford is claiming Toyota is monkeying with their numbers!!! Automobile Magazine is siding with Ford, implying Toyota is misleading their customers with the way they measure cargo capacity. As it turns out, to get the 128 cu ft in the Sequoia you have to REMOVE THE SECOND ROW SEAT BY REMOVING 8 BIG BOLTS! (Expedition second row seats fold flat into the floor.)

I looked for instructions on how to remove the second row seat in the Sequoia owners manual...AND COULDN'T FIND ANY INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO DO THIS, OR TO WHAT TORQUE TO TIGHTEN THE SEAT BOLTS.

Has anyone removed their second row seats yet? How can I know the bolts are tight enough?

PS: The Automobile Magazine article also said that Toyota and Ford are fighting over how to measure ground clearance. Toyota (and Edmunds) say that the Sequoia is over 10"...Edmunds says the Expedition is only 7.5". But when I measured our 4X4 Sequoia against an Expedition 4X4 I found the Sequoia had only 9" of clearance below the rear axle while the Expedition had 8-3/4" -- about the same! What's up with this?

You must read Tundra Solutions " Arbitration " prior to buying the Sequoia. Thanks to MAN, DRDDS, THISISCJH, MIKE11, MARIUSZ and others for alerting me to a potentially serious problem. This engine should not sound like a diesel all the time no matter what a salesman tells you. The other troubling issue is the vibration from the front end that some are experiencing, without success of finding the problem. I don't care about memory seats, low clocks, or booming bass etc., but these other issues could be serious. I remember a couple of delays when the vehicle was to be released... could this be related? I hate being a guinea pig when buying a first year car, but I want a Sequoia soooo bad!

I have a 4 day old 4WD Toyota Sequoia Limited...So far, I love it! (Previous car for 8 years was a Toyota AWD Previa) The only problem I have encountered thus far with the Sequoia is a "fluttering" sound when the car is running. The dealer at first said it was because the car hadn't been prepped when we test drove it. After the "prep", it still has a soft fluttering sound and then the dealer said it was a normal engine sound. Anyone else have this sound? Thanks!

Have you considered the Acura MDX? By the way I currently own a '99 EB Expy and have an MDX on order. We seriously considered the SQ, so I feel somewhat qualified to discuss these three vehicles.

The MDX is by far the roomiest of the mid-size SUVs. The 2nd row is just as roomy as the SQ and Expy. Granted the 3rd row is not quite as roomy as the SQ, but it is very comporable to the Expy. The MDX 3rd row is more than adequate for the kids, and really not so bad for adults on short trips, such as going out to eat. Remarkably the cargo capacity of the MDX, with its 3rd row folded flat greatly exceeds my Expy with its 3rd row tilted forward. Dito the SQs 3rd row rolled forward.

As far as handling goes it exceeds both the larger vehicles. Faster acceleration, smaller turn radius, more nimble, etc. It should be more comfortable for you to drive than the larger SUVs. It has much better gas mileage as well.

As far as price goes the MDX is in the middle. A comporably equipped SQ Ltd costs more than the MDX and the EB Expy is cheaper.

If you have not considered the MDX, I urge you to do so.

if you are going to put your hard-earned $$$ into purchasing a vehicle, BUT you would ask complete strangers on multiple boards here on Edmund's on how you can make your choice ? Uhmmmm ! It doesn't sound that smart to me.... I wouldn't put that much stock in the opinions you get here, afterall everyone has their reason(s) for/against a vehicle. And on this board, if you've been around long enough, you will find that majority of us owners love this vehicle and will give more-or-less a biased opinion.

There was a response to your initial (same) request for opinion re Expy-vs-Sequoia purchase. And that is: YOU must first decide what it is you want in the vehicle, research it as much as you can, then YOU should go out and test drive those vehicles that meets some or all of your needs. Ultimately, YOU must decide what is best for you given the totality of the data at your disposal.... Methinks, this is the best advice you could get anywhere...

At the advice of one of our responders I checked out Jim Barkley Toyoto in NC or SC. It is hard to believe that they are selling a Limited 4WD with a moonroof and other options for $4,100+ off MSRP and advertise the price on their website as a no haggle price. Wish we had some prices like that in the Calif or Oregon area.

Well, thank you for the insults. I thought message boards were designed to toss around ideas, share and help each other with questions. Apparently you think it's only for you and others in the "owners club." I guess it is elite.

Yes, I have been on other boards (only 2) and Yes, as I am NO DUMMY, I have test driven ALL the vehicles, let me REPEAT, ALL THE VEHICLES I have discussed. I just don't have anyone in my life's circle of people who are currently shopping for a vehicle. Message board people are shopping, therefore it is a great source of discussion and information in which I feel is very INTELLIGENT to engage BECAUSE it IS $40K+ of my money!

As for decision making, OF COURSE I will make my own decision. Of course you are all strangers, and so are all the people whose opinions you read in motor magazines, and advertisements, and even the dealers YOU spoke to before YOU purchased a vehicle.

If you don't agree with the way I want to ask my questions (and I am a former news reporter, for YOUR information) then DON't responed to mine with insults!

We just drove a Sequoia Limited this weekend and absolutely loved it. I have been reading the MDX board for three months now and have test drove it twice, however I never got the luxury feel out of the MDX like the Sequoia gave me. My biggest gripe about the MDX is the leather seats, just not plush enough to spend $37,000 +. When I sat in the Sequoia, I just got the feeling that this is it...this is the SUV we're going to purchase.

rwelliott...Could you display the URL for the Jim Barkley Toyota please. I've tried a search and haven't been able to find them. We live in Northern Virginia and would be willing to drive to NC or SC for a long weekend to purchase one.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. Just in case, has anyone had a good experience with any Toyota Dealership in the Washington, DC metro area?
  • devlopperdevlopper Member Posts: 44
Thanks OBYONE - I was considering an SUV but I guess I'd better start looking at a Mack or Kenworth if I want to be serious about towing! Are you joking or are you in the wrong forum? This one is about personal vehicles.....
  • msanthkmanthmsanthkmanth Member Posts: 3
I'm confused about the preferred package on the Sequoia. Toyota's glossy Seqouia brochure lists the preferred package as having heated leather front seats. However neither the Toyota website nor my nearby Toyota dealer say that you get heated front seats with that package. Is the brochure wrong or has their been a change. Anybody know about this?
  • oac3oac3 Member Posts: 373
I didn't mean to "insult" you, but if my post did, I apologize :-) Unfortunately, you cannot read body language and intonation in posts, otherwise you would have perceived my attempt to help with an insult....

I simply wanted to convey the fact that opinions on the Sequoia board comparing this vehicle with the Ford Expedition will be biased bcos many people on this forum are current or potential Seq owners... Nothing elitist about that ! Just a warning to not rely on all that people posts on their comparisons....

Sometimes, however, it is best to simply shut up and that is what I'll do starting now...

    Re: $4100 off MSRP

They show zero SEQ inventory and when I built a fairly loaded SR5 4x4 it was $1800 from MSRP.

OTOH, It was a easy site to navigate, pricing right up front, and "build your own" with no haggle pricing shown (aka 6K$ off LC's and a

few K$ off highlanders). The "build your own" app had a little bug in that it wouldn't accept mutiple major (AH/PM/Conv) pacakages at the same time. But the discount prices were there to add in by head.

We looked at all 3 of these and bought the Sequoia. I know the MDX to be more luxurious than the other two, however it is much smaller than the Expy and Sequoia and also more money. The MSRP is less than a comparable Sequoia, difference is I bought my Limited Sequoia for $3000 under sticker ($38K) and the Acura dealers are holding the line at sticker for the MDXs ($42 with touring package). Plus, I am growing to hate the look of the MDX, I think it wants to be a minivan or a TL with the back and that ugly nose. The Expedition appears to be a great value right now, about $29,000 for a loaded XLT, $9,000 less than a comparable Sequoia. For me, the plusses of the Sequoia include A)exclusivity, Toyota will only make 60,000 this year and they won't make more than that next year with the economy tanking, B)Quality, I've had none of the issues other owners have had, I've owned an Explorer so I've "been there, done that!", C)comfort and solid feel on the road, the Sequoia dominates in the overall comfort factor in this segment. I'd put it up against my mother's LX470 (she like mine better but won't admit it), and D) Resale value, I just bought a house with a 3-car garage, so I plan to keep it nice and the miles low so I know I can get a real good trade-in/resale in a few years. To me, the bottom line is this. The Sequoia is the obvious winner in the category, but if pinched for cash the Expy is an honorable alternative. A final note, while I am happy about every aspect about my Sequoia, including power, that Ford 5.4 Triton V8 sure would be a nice addition to it. Hmmm, can someone drop that engine in my Sequoia? I'm just kidding.
  • exsailorexsailor Member Posts: 8
