"So anyone seen one in red?"

I see one in red every day. So while everyone else on the board argues about where to get the best price, or who got the best price, I'll tell you about the red.

It's not burgundy, and it's neither orangish nor bluish -- it's definitely RED. It's similar to, but maybe not quite as light (or bright?) as, the Expedition red.

I would describe it as a "Deep Candy Apple Red". Very elegant.

Next week we'll see what it looks like out on the red rocks of Utah.

Is a red car graphic for the SR5. Great looking car, especially with oak cloth or oak leather. Brings out the gold shimmer in the lower two-tone.

As time permits, I will start photographing all of the Sequoias now that my digital camera is working in conjunction with the download cord!

When I looked at the Red on the lot, I immediately noticed the reflection of the water spots, burned into the finish and very apparent on the high reflection finish. Candy Apple Red is a good description. But I scratched the color as one of my choices, becuase of the spots. Do you notice anything like this cliffy1, or was I just seeing things?

Deals are variable all over the country, color by color, car by car. cnw57, and other folks may mean well by insisting you paid too much, but geographically, take it with a grain of salt. If you are happy with your deal, then ignore the peanut gallery. Honest.

  • dianne4toyotadianne4toyota Member Posts: 343
Might I just suggest that the spots were ON the outside of the car? Not like a giraffe where they are actually bred into them?

All Paint can be spotted by water. Black, white, silver, you name it. Unless the "spots" were gold flecks, as the pearlcoat red has gold flecks in it. Like desert sand, and thunder gray do as well.. green too.

NotAGiraffe... but have you spotted a dalmatian? ;>

clkabrio4sale-you said you're in CT. Have you purchase a Seqouia yet or just shopping? I've just started looking. Any dealers you suggest I avoid? How much over invoice do you think the Sequoia goes for in CT? I'm in Stamford but will travel. Thanks in advance.

I was able to secure an SR5 4X4 with CQ, AH, AC RF and CF packages.....Basically the convenience
package with alloy package, dual AC, roof rack (like they would make it without one) and floor mats. The quote is for $33,500. About $500 over invoice. Some have asked where I am located, I am in Minneapolis. If you would like the dealer please email me. I will send you back his name and number.

We took delivery of our red SR5 4x4 with oak leather moonroof, dual air, alloys, etc. Msrp was 41,450, we paid the dealer 37,900 not including 1400 in NYS sales tax. Part of the deal was adding heat to the front seats. I gave the dealer $400 for that, supposedly he said his cost was 650. They work great, heat up fast, two settings and you can' feel the heating units in the seat After the deal was signed and done, they had a hard time locating one of any color. They found the red one and we couldn't be happier. People have stopped my wife to ask about the vehicle. The Deanship owner walked in and wanted to take it for a weekend, he didn't know it was sold.
Only minor complaint is the dome light is broken.

It seems crass commercialism has won out over good taste. When I received my Sequoia catalog I noticed Toyota now offers the "Pimp" package (gold plated emblems) as a factory (dealer) option. I'm waiting for next years model with the chain steering wheel!
  • dianne4toyotadianne4toyota Member Posts: 343
There have been gold emblems on Toyota cars and trucks available since 1991 in brochures and parts departments. It's common to see these things on Avalon, Camry XLE and LE, and Limited 4Runners.

While I am not partial to gold emblems, they do look nice on certain colors.

Well we will have to agree to disagree on this one. My last Toyota was purchased in '82.Didn't know the Midas touch was officially sponsored for so long.

In any case respect the input you've been making to this forum. I was turned off by a local dealer who was asking sveral thousand over MSRP for the first Ltd's that came out and later by the Toyoguard and Glass etching BS which seems almost everyone offers. I once heard that in many cases undercoating actually could cause more problems by blocking some of the drainage holes or creating areas where water would collect. Why do the dealers insist on messing with a perfectly good vehicle? (other than the $$).

Toyota also offers Black Pearl badges to replace the standard chrome ones. Not sure if these are available for the Sequoia yet, but they are very understated.

I agree with Dianne that the gold badges, while not at all my taste, do look good on some colours. Vehicles that are painted gold or black, for example.

    Florida here.
After 2k miles this truck drives very nice and handles good and stops quickly as verified by my wife today. A man pulled out in front of her and she stopped with only inches to spare. She's driven it more than I have and says a lot of people ask her about it.
She thinks the brakes are great.

It has every option except the glass breakage sensor I think. It's silver w/grey lthr. & the gold pimp pkg. The chrome chain steering wheel was not available just yet.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what exactly are the wheel locks for? Do I really need to send back that wheel lock registration form that was in my documentation? Thanks.

"Please excuse my ignorance, but what exactly are the wheel locks for? "

What? You mean you haven't had your car put up on cinder blocks lately and all four tires stolen???

Apparently the Japanese designers still think we live in the early seventies where the neighborhood punks steal all your tires and
break off your radio antannae for a coup-de-grace
    (Re:that stupid retracting antatnnae).

I cannot believe that after 5 months of deliberation, and test driving ALL of the large SUVs, some midsize SUVs, and minivans (several times each), I actually bought the one I test drove 2nd only after the MDX last November! If any of you remember, I have been the one worried about rollover risk and handling of such a large beast. I only have driven minvans and sports cars (before kids).

I really appreciated this forum as many of you have given honest, unbiased advice. I was even told to go to another minivan. I almost did, but I couldn't forget how good it felt driving the Sequoia. It's just fun to drive it!

Anyway, as I get used to it I will probably return to this board for more help. Like, how important is it really for the break in period to stay under 55 mph? I just read that last night and I have violated that many times just by my test drives!

I bought a black Limited 4x4 with grey interior. I added hood protector, cargo net, cargo cover, gold emblem kit (why do some of you think that gold is tacky?) and also sunroof. I paid 44K. How does that look? Was I taken, or was it reasonable? Anyway, I don't care anymore because the deciding process was driving me nuts, so now I can move on with other things in my life~!

    Thanks all!

You mean they actually lock the wheels so they can't be taken off??? Sounds like fun if you get a flat tire....are they automatically locked or can I just disregard the fact that they're there and never use it? Sounds incredibly useless to me....I've never even HEARD of someone having their tires stolen (maybe the spare, but not the ones on the car)...whoever invented this must have spent alot of time in Brooklyn.

Attleboro and herb Chambers (where I bought) were both great to work with. Sullivan Brothers in Kingston MA was awful. I bought my last car from them and was pretty satisfied, so I figured I'd go back. They undervalued my trade by about $1500, the same amount they were taking off the Sequoia - coincidence? The best part about this story was that after negotiating for over an hour on the trade to get closer top the actual wholesale value the salesman comes out with paper work showing no discount on the Sequoia. When I asked what happened he said that if was to give me more for my trade then the money had to come from somewhere, didn't it? Needless to say, I walked away.
Anyway, Boch was unwilling to deal. McGee in Hanover (my home town) said that they would be willing to make a deal, but offered no specifics and really had nothing to deal with (their inventory seems better lately). I used the net to contact several other dealers, but none were willing to give me any info over the phone. The person I dealt with at Herb Chambers was Bob Van Wert. I would only deal with him. He quoted me a discount over the phone and gave me a fair value on my trade. The deal took about half an hour from the time I walked in the door. I waited for about 90 minutes while they prepped the truck and drove it home that day. Bob has emailed me a couple of times after the deal to see how things were going. They were not conveniently located for me and I almost went to somebody else, but I'm so glad I didn't - Great experience.

Hey Drew - Isn't it getting close to the time for archiving Sequoia III, and go with a new one?

  • roadroachroadroach Member Posts: 131
The wheel locks are to prevent someone (theoretically) from stealing a very expensive set of allow wheels. The wheel lock is simply a replacement lugnut with an odd shaped head. A standard lug wrench cannot be used to remove the wheel lock. When you purchased your vehicle with the wheel locks, in the bag with the lug wrench should be a special socket which will fit on the wheel lock, thus enabling you to take it off if you get a flat. There is no 'activation'.

The registration papers need to be filled out. If you lose that special little socket, you won't be able to take your wheels off (kinda important for when you need to rotate/replace your tires) but if you've sent in your registration papers, then Toyota can send you a replacement socket.
  • seqladyseqlady Member Posts: 59
I really appreciate your thorough explanation....better get that registration out..thanks again!

Now that we are using this new discussion software, there is no longer a need to start a new topic, and freeze and archive the existing topic. This will be the Sequoia's discussion permanent "home". :-) We're in the process of gradually removing the numbers from the topic titles.

    Hope this helps,

These people sell SR5 at about $1700 above invoice. Too good or is it normal pricing at this time?

"When you purchased your vehicle with the wheel locks, in the bag with the lug wrench should be a special socket which will fit on the wheel lock, thus enabling you to take it off if you get a flat."

Oh...let me count the ways that this "special socket" is going to be a pain in the a**

1)I drop it in the weeds on the side of an
    interstate at night
2)I have to dig it up every time I get my tires rotated or serviced
3)The impact-wrench armed lunk-head putting my tires on at the quicky stop over torques the socket and buggers up the special keying. Next time I get a flat I have to end up calling a tow-truck because I can't get the one nut off.
4)It's 1am, 20 below zero in northern Minnesota,
on a minimal berm interstae and I have to freak around with getting the socket on a ice encrusted
    keying.
5)If the thief wants my wheels anyway, he'll have the tools to bypass

    cheers

I wasn't trying to give my opinion regards wheel locks one way or the other. I was simply trying to explain the concept to an individual who had them but had no idea what they really were.

Personally, I've only had one car with wheel locks. Yes, they can be a PITA. But if you live in a high-crime area, they will probably stop the CASUAL theives. In that sense they are about as effective as a car alarm. If a thief wants your car, he will get it anyway.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Hey, I'm Canadian :-) Didn't you recognise that? ;-) Actually, I learnt British English (though not initially in this country), hence my seemingly perculiar spelling.
  • thirdsuvthirdsuv Member Posts: 209
Your post was fine, especially since you answered the question more completely then me (i.e. socket/registration...)

Instead, I was just highlighting the PITA socket
and why I didn't order that option. Personally, if wheel locks came standard, I'd make the dealer give me four regular lugnuts so I could get back to normal.
The first time you discover that you lost that
special socket you'll undoubtedly will be on the side of the road with a flat and you're gonna be mighty PO'd.

    Oh yeah..
#6) As you're driving away from the quicky tire mart, the mecahnic sees the special socket sitting inside his impact wrench. He picks up the socket, does a quick Michael Jordan fake, spins, jumps up and fires the socket into the trash can for an easy 2 points. Swish...The crowd roars!!!

I bought a Sequoia about a month ago. After it had about 80 miles on it, it the engine started making a tapping sound. Toyota tells me they're having problems witht the Sequoia. Now I have to go through a process called arbitration to get my money back--they don't know how to fix the problem! Oh, oh what a feeling!

You mentioned that Toyota told you they were having problems with the Sequoia. Was it the dealer or someone higher up the ladder? Also, can someone tell me more about the engine. I thought it was the same as in the Tundra. Are they also having problems
  • seqladyseqlady Member Posts: 59
Will the dealer change the one altered lug nut to a regular one so I don't need to use the wheel locks at all...from what thirdsuv and roadroach said, it really does sound like a royal PITA. Can you see any reason why I shouldn't ask them to do this??
  • tdilltdill Member Posts: 5
Thanks again. I stopped in at McGee last week to get the name of their internet manager. I've got Attleboro & Chambers teed up; had written off Sullivan Bros - heard too many stories similar to yours.

for information on how this problem was solved by a dealership, read post #1348.... (see what a little "finger-walking" will get you ...

  • kriskokrisko Member Posts: 26
The engine in the Sequoia is the same engine in the Land Cruiser, LX470, and the Tundra albeit tuned slightly differently. I would not assume that engine problems are the norm for this vehicle, I haven't seem much about them except for a vague statement like the one above.
  • nighter50nighter50 Member Posts: 127
i thought i might try this post again. Can anyone share their lease info on a Sequoia? Anyone know the residual percentages for 36/48 months and 12k/15k miles? Money factor? Anything?

    Thanks in advance.

I just bought a new Sequoia and drove it from Knoxville Tenn. to Huntsville,Al.-about 250 miles.I noticed it was leaking oil on the ground. The dealer in Huntsville says it is leaking from the cam and this has to be replaced. Now I have to wait another week for my vehicle.BUMMER!!!!
  • roadroachroadroach Member Posts: 131
They should be able to do that for you for nothing. I'd ask them the next time you take it in for service.

My dad's getting a Sequoia. He chose it over a Passport, a Montero Sport, and a MDX. You guys who own Sequoias know better than I, so I'm asking for your opinions.
  • tbevertbever Member Posts: 39
I was also having the tapping noise that everyone has been noticing. It was not really all that bad but the truck sounded a bit like a diesel. After reading the posts on the Sequoia solutions board, I called Grapevine Toyota in the DFW area and took my 4*4 LTD in today. Took about 2.5 hrs and it is FIXED. It was the same solution the other poster mentioned: something about isolating the wiring harness for the fuel injectors. It is now COMPLETELY QUIET. I bet this is an across the board problem with the Sequoias. This is a simple fix, according to the Service Manager.
  • tloughrtloughr Member Posts: 3
If he doesn't mind an engine that sounds like it has a couple hundred thousand miles on it instead of a couple hundred. Go for it!
  • rruck1rruck1 Member Posts: 91
The Sequoia is very nice and very quiet most of the time. The engine is a little (stress little) loud when it is very cold out. It seems like a small percentage of owners are having problems with a tapping noise that Toyota has fixed. I bought mine in December and I love it! It's great for those 3 hour drives up to ski country or for just driving around town. I'm not too fond of taking it into the city where the insanity level is too high, the parking spaces are too small and the rocks are a' flying from all the construction equipment (big dig).
The only concern I would have from your post is that the Sequoia is considerably larger than most of the other vehicles listed (and more expensive). For me it was the only way to go and I can say that I don't have a single regret. Good luck!
  • rickc5rickc5 Member Posts: 378
None of the vehicles you mentioned are comparable to a Sequoia. Unless your Dad is independently wealthy, have him look at the Ford Expedition and/or the Chevy Tahoe. He can save a boat-load of money (like $5000-9000) should he decide that the Ford or the Chevy will suit his needs.

We bought a new Expedition two months ago and have yet to encounter a single problem. Its distressing to read so many posts about problems with the new Sequoias, but not surprising. IMHO, Toyota has lost its edge for building problem-free vehicles as they did in the past. They're about the same as everyone else now. So why pay so much more for an equal product?????
  • crudeoasiscrudeoasis Member Posts: 21
You wrote, "We bought a new Expedition two months ago and have yet to encounter a single problem." If you're so happy with your Expedition, what are you doing trolling on the Sequoia board?! Don't you think it'd be kind of strange for me, a happy Sequoia owner, to go over to the Expedition board and say, "Expeditions suck, I love my Sequoia"? It would make no sense, whatsoever.

I sometimes get the feeling the American manufacturers have paid shills to bash the competition, which is certainly easier than designing and building a quality product.
  • thirdsuvthirdsuv Member Posts: 209
    Tloughr,
Your "ticking" problem sounds a heck of alot
like all the other noise problems on this board and that is apparently a non-serious problem that has a known fix. Why aren't you pursuing that fix?

    Rickc5,
Your profile says it all. Your distaste for Toyota has been noted(and noted...and noted). The forum thanks you for your input and wishes
you good luck in the Expedition forum.

    Cheers

What arrogance Toyota SQ owners display. Nothing wrong with the SQ if that is what he wants.

But the MDX is more than comporable (re: rickc5) to a SQ! In some ways it is superior!!
  • dianne4toyotadianne4toyota Member Posts: 343
I saw a few posts at Sequoia Solutions area of the Tundra solutions board concerning this issue. It seems to have a surefire fix that's concerned with the wiring harness for the lifters, I think.

    Launcher,

Let your Dad go with whatever his heart dictates. From the type fo vehicles he tested, it looks like he does not need too much space, and all of those are good vehicles. (By the way, I didn't realize Honda still sells Passports.) Generally, the overall quality of vehicles today has significantly improved, for both imports and domestic.

I also struggled between the Sequoia and the MDX, except that I really could not figure out what the MDX was: a minivan or an SUV. Somebody aptly coined the phrase "Street Utility Vehicle" for these crossbreeds. I am still waiting for my Sequoia.

The least you want your Dad to experience is to be paying for a vehicle that he found out he does not like or want.

    Best of luck.

To all those loyal Ford owners who think Ford puts out a good product. How many repairs must you endure.I own a Ford E150 conversion van. The conversion was excellent but the vehicle was nothing but problems from day one when it was brand new.The new Toyota Sequoia on order has to be an improvement over the Ford.
