If you're referring to the specials starting at 3.9%, then I think you may be out of luck. According to the Subaru website, it says that you must take delivery from the dealer's stock and before Feb. 28, 2001.

Here's the link to the info that I got.

However, it never hurts to ask... :-)

Maria: I haven't seen anyone use seat covers so far.

I would just get mats from Target, Wal Mart, Costco, or wherever you normally shop, since the Subaru rubber mats are not custom. You can usually trim them if they're big.

I would also ask for that rate. Subaru usually extends the deadline as time goes by, so I'd bet you can indeed get it.

a double whammy .. new macs, and the new impreza being released!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Man, I wish they would only be reasonably priced and if there were software for em that would be great... My last mac was an 840av! Great machine, but I couldn't afford to keep up with the cost of ownership of macs. I had em for almost 10 years, finally gave in to Microsloth!

I bought a set of "Car and Driver" rubber floor mats at Target. I think the fronts were about $10 each and the rears were $7 or something like that. They mats have deep grooves for snow and mud. They pretty much fit with just a little bit of trimming with a utility knife.

Jeez, my Mac ran like a top with no $$ in it at all. I turned my back on Microsoft with a new G4 this summer. It rocks!! Hauls [non-permissible content removed] too. Pricey? Well, a bit more than PC by, say, $400, but it hardly ever crashes. Maybe once a month, and that is only because "sleep" mode conflicts with the software(it runs my home recording studio. Pro Tools LE 5.0.1, RealVerb, DigiRack, yadda yadda).

Come to think of it, my subaru was also a touch more expensive than the competition, but it hardly ever crashes, either. Unless I'm in "sleep" mode, of course.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Well last time i priced a mac, an equivilent machine was almost 2x the price of a PC, with 10% of the software available. Right now Macs are basically niche markets (music, publishing, and digital photography/arts) In the business world macs are all but dead. Mostly cause of the premium price. Can I interest you in some Syquest EZ 135 drives? I have 2 SCSI ones from my mac days that are collecting dust.

Being a graphic designer, MACs are the industry standard in my line of work. I've got a year-old G-4/400 with 384 RAM and 28 GB HD.

Opps... I forgot... this is a Subaru topic. %-(

what happened to the off-topic ability to hide posts?

re: Macs in business. One response: WebObjects. If you know what that is, then you know how much Apple owns of the internet application market. It's a well kept secret. It's also my living.

    got mac - CHECK
    got a Subaru - CHECK
changed my name to Dave - damn, I knew I forgot something!

Feh, it's always been a niche product and always will be. 8-)

I had one of the better machines that debuted in 1984 with a Motorola 68000-- an Amiga. (I can hear the groans now.)

Unfortunately, Webcrossing doesn't even have anything that we can modify to enable hidden posts. I too, am lamenting the loss of the feature, but I can live with it :-) The "Check Messages" features more than makes up for it, at least in my humble opinion.

The new Impreza looks good, and the rally footage of it on Motoring 2001 was interesting as well. If only they could bring over the HID Xenon headlamps option on it and the Legacy/Outback. Patti...please? :-) How about adding curtain airbags to the Legacy line while you're at it? The Passat will be getting both for MY2001.5 and it really helps to promote an upscale image.

Don't even get me started on the Mac vs. PC debate! Actually, I shy away from it because it can get frustrating when you hear remarks like "niche market" and "10% of the software available". The killer app for business is Microsoft Office, and it runs just fine on my Macs. Plus, studies show that about 90% of PC software is K-Mart level junk, so it doesn't bug me that I can't get it on my Mac. All of the "important" apps are available on the Mac. As for the niche market, add engineers to the list of "niche" players that are often heavily Mac based. In addition to being awesome for publishing technical papers, they are great scientific and engineering machines! We have PCs too, but they tend to be relegated to very basic roles (data acquisition, management support). Some people think Linux is a niche OS too . . . .

Ash -- WebObjects -- rock on!

OK, back to Subes. I'm in Reno, NV for a conference, and plan to do some skiing tomorrow in the Tahoe region (at Squaw Valley). I have a Chevy Cavalier rental right now (blech!), but plan to trade it for an Outback or Forester tomorrow. The rental lots at the Reno Airport were choked with Subes!

Good points. I'll make sure I pass them on today. Will you be "live" tonight with Mike? It should be fun and Mike is a great guy with a wealth of knowledge!
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
Sorry mike, I ain't got time for that old school SCSI stuff. This baby only has firewire and USB...

OK OK OK, back to Soobs...
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Now that I see it actually has the 227hp and a decent price tag... I guess I'll have to wait til the Trooper is paid off :(

Today's the day. The word "Subaru" will take on a different meaning in the US market. Consumers will open their eyes and see what we've been seeing all along!

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
And the last year we'll be able to afford them...

I'm sure that increased demand will = higher prices in the future.

    :(

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Let's not complain about prices being too low, though.

Everyone whined when the VDC broke the $30k barrier. The WRX was expected to cost $25 to $26k, and now we find out we can get a WRX wagon for $23.5k. This is not bad news!

Perhaps after the VDC people expected a similarly high price scale.

VTD Auto or 50/50 split Manual? That is the question. Any feelings on this?

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Without question, the manual is a must. It's a small displacement engine that'll really need to spool up to make power, so you'll want the 5 speed for that. Peak torque at 4000rpm is pretty high up in the rev range for a turbo.

They're quoting 6.1s to 60 for the 5 speed, I bet the auto takes more than 7s.

Another thing - the advantages that auto could offer, like easier towing and off roading, simply do not apply to this Subaru.

All that plus $1000 more money for mods.

No question in my mind. The the WRX they shouldn't even offer an auto!

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
35/65 split on the Auto! The auto isn't a $1000 is it?

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Mine's 50/50 and I can easily get it to 4-wheel drift in wet/snowy corners. You can really steer with the throttle in turns, so long as the suspension tuning is right.

So in theory 35/65 sounds like an advantage, but in practice the manual works as you'd want it to.

I thought I read the auto was a $1000 option.

    -juice
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I believe the WRX automatic VDT split is 45/55, the same as the H-6 VDC. I wonder if this system will eventually be standard for all future Subarus with automatics?

    Bob
  • amishraamishra Member Posts: 367
I agree with the manual only option. A car like this is wrecked with an auto trans.
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
Someone has asked about seat covers for Forester S+... If you read the manual it tells you NOT to use seat covers as it can compromise side airbags. I guess you still can use some truncated seat covers that don't go over sides of the seat, but those usually don't look as good.

On PC vs Mac: as someone who in the past was developing desktop apps for both PCs and Macs, I'd say I hate Macs with purple passion.

But I do own 2 Soobs and my husband's name is Mike, so I guess I'm OK, right Juice?
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
I'm still separated from my baby Forester! Five weeks came and went, and it's still in the shop. The shop guy tells me that some parts for the damaged rear-end are on back order at Subaru.. .those parts he says are specific for 2001 models, and are in short supply at SOA. Arrrgh!

Patti, does it sound like truth? If you think he's pulling my leg, where I should call/fax, to check on availability of the parts?
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
CAR magazine wrung out the new turbo, and found lots of lag under 3K. Manual control of revs will enable the thinking driver to keep the engine where it needs to be. then again, the UK car is only running 217hp (stated, not actual).
  • dannykadannyka Member Posts: 115
I guess the '02 Foresters are still a few months off. I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a Forester order and they're still taking them for '01s. Anybody else hear about when the 2002s are due to come out? Maria, is a 2001 what you just ordered?

And let's hear it for the Amiga owners out there! Woo-hoo! It was one of my favorites along with the Mac Classic that now sits on my desk -- as a conversation piece :-)

    -Dan
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Bob: yes, 45/55 is certainly better than 90/10! The catch is there may be a fuel mileage penalty.

Kate: still? Boy, just hang in there and drive the Loyale. Let the body shop fix it right, even if it takes time.

Loosh - makes you wonder how long before an owner puts one on the dyno, no? 13.5 psi of boost? Sweet!

The 2002s shouldn't be out until August or so. 2001 had many changes, so the 2002 Forester will likely just add some extra options as standard, as they've done every year since the intro.

Thanks for the responses on the seat covers and floor mats. I did check with my dealer and the financing is available on cars ordered as well as in stock. I ordered a 2001 Forester but I am now seriously considering the WRX wagon...your thoughts?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    What are your needs?

If they're light duty and not too much space is required, WRX wagon all the way. $23.5k for 227hp in a wagon! 'nuff said!

If you have two kids and the significant other packs heavily, go for the Forester.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
It will almost definitely *NOT* be available on the WRX. I'm sure it will fall into the special category that isn't applicable to the special financing rate.

Great! I really enjoy how the customer's or potential customer's inputs could make it to the product planning department. One always hears of auto companies going to customers for new ideas, but this is the first place that I've seen it in real life. If only other Townhall groups could have the kind of excellent manufacturer support that this one had...well, we're working on it!

No, I won't be hosting the WRX chat. If I got my facts right, I believe Mike Smith, one of our very own Subaru Crew chiefs will be. I'll be in the chat anyway. Not going to miss this one for sure! Just to remind everyone (as if you all could forget ), the chat is at 5-6pm PT/8-9pm ET. You can enter the chat page from here: http://www.edmunds.com/chat/subaruWRX010901.html

Remember though, do not close the browser window or the java applet for the chat will terminate!. I can't tell you how many times people have accidentally logged themselves out of the chat. A warning not to close the browser window should be up shortly.

UK ponies are different than USA ponies (217 vs. 227). The cars put out about the same real hp.

    G'day
I am a bit thrown on time differences at present. Here in Melbourne, Australia it is presently 8:10am. It looks like it is about 19 hours time difference to the system time. How many hours until this chat starts?

    Cheers

    Graham
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The time of the posts is pacific time, and the chat starts at 5pm pacific time, so it's just less than 4 hours from now.

    "see" you there.

  • grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
Ah, I can work that out now. Might even be at home then as I am on three weeks leave and the forecast for today is 37 degrees Celsius. Might be a bit warmer than you folk.

By the way, the auto WRX seems to be very popular here. I think the police pursuit WRX's are autos and I can assure you that they can shift plenty fast enough.

    Thanks

Sorry, I can't find the exacts from your earlier post (or it's location). I'm kind of on limited time tonight. Call us at 1-800-SUBARU3. Let the Rep. know that you are in a vehicle down situation. We can add the needed parts to our "hot" list and it gets a lot of quick attention. The dealers do their best, but sometimes we need to get things nudged along a bit. I know we can help. Meanwhile, take me up on my offer of providing you with some rental help. No sense in adding miles to your poor old Loyale. We want to help.

    Thanks!

We should have known they would only rehash the info on the official site. None of my new questions were answered.
P.. I like glen's site better even though it has no game.

the chat was a joke. well maybe we're such nerdy Subaru owners that we know so much about it that those questions seemed so elementary to us.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
was a waste of time. I had hoped to get some of my questions answered. None that I submitted were addressed. I didn't learn anything new, except that perhaps(?) we may get an STi version too, sometime down the road. :e

Well, at least my HID lights question was posted. The question was sort of sidestepped though. I really would've liked to see the lights, at least as an option, considering the speed potential of the WRX; one could over drive the standard halogen lamps! In addition, the competitors (3-series and A4) have them as either standard or optional equipment already.

Edmunds.com's first drive review on the '02 WRX is up and can be read here. The Impreza 22B review can be seen here.

I admit that I'm slowly warming up to the new Impreza's front end design and I kind of like the interior, especially the aluminum trim and the Momo steering wheel.

have I seen mention of a moonroof or outside temp gauge for the WRX. I hope they're available, at least as an option.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
He said "we are providing all the best safety features in our cars made for the world" and in the same chat says "We didn't put in HID headlights and 4 pot brakes because it would be too expensive" yet they put in a 6 disc changer? and the aluminum pedals? and the brushed plastic aluminum stuff around the controls, etc. etc... If they are so expensive, why not offer them as options? Something doesn't add up to me.
