    G'day

From my experience, the only bits of any language your wife needs to know is "How Much?" Oddly, the words for the price are universally understood.

    Watch your wallet, Juice!

    Cheers

We are looking into getting a couple of FRS type radios and were wondering which are good, what is the difference between FRS and GMRS? what features are necessities, etc. I noticed it says on the GMRS box that an FCC license is required. Any insight into that?
    TIA.

Serge: All I can tell you is my own experience. We have 4 of the Motorola variety, 2 with the LCD channel display, 2 without. All are compatible with each other. We give the simple ones to the kids while they're riding bikes around campgrounds, etc. Got ours from Costco.com, have had no trouble with any of them. Range is a mile or two, depending on terrain. They take 3 AA batteries each, but if you believe the labels, one set of batteries is good for about 24-27 hours of standby time, less than that the more you talk. No licenses required for this variety.

    Cheers!

Well, it finally snowed here! Got about 3 inches of wet, heavy white stuff overnight, most of which has melted into a sheet of ice as I write this. Took temps, forecast, and "gut feeling" to heart yesterday afternoon, and installed snow tires on both cars. Saved a couple months wear & tear on the tires waiting this long, so all's well that ends well.

    Cheers!

I've used the Motorola FRS radios almost daily for several years now. I work in the forest as a land surveyor in all types of weather and they have held up well, even dropped one in a creek once and it's still working even though they aren't advertised as being water proof. My experience has been that as long as you have line of sight between radio's (no hills or large buildings) they can work up to 2 miles. They seem to work fine in vehicles also. I would get the model with a charger if you plan on using them very often. They can eat up a set of batteries in one day. The GMRS are supposed to be good for 5 miles (haven't used them) and you do need a license. Probably no big deal, just fill out a form and send them money. If its like my VHF boat radio license, its good for 10 years. Can't remember what it cost, maybe $50?

    Serge-
Max. range on the FRS is 2 miles, whereas the GMRS has a max. range of five miles. If I understood correctly, any transceiver which has a capable range of >2 miles (CB exempt) requires a FCC license to acquire and operate.
Transceivers in FRS format operates on 14 channels, and the GMRS also 14 but consist of 7 FRS channel & the other 7 on GMRS.
Other differences between the FRS and GMRS besides their comm range, I believe the GMRS operates on a higher FM bandwidth than the FRS.

Hope my limited knowledge could be of some help. :)

Oh yeah, Ed. Forgot to mention that one needs a magnifying glass to see the picture. :-)

I subscribed about 5 years ago because it was one of the few magazines to have Impreza articles (they built the 2.5RX). They also cover every U.S. SCCA rally and some occasional WRC info. Not many mags can make that claim. Also, there's project WRX but there hasn't been anything in print in the last several months.

Thanks for asking. The recovery has been rough...

Besides losing his vision right after the operation, which required another operation to remove a blood clot, he's been in a lot of discomfort and pain. As part of the operation procedure, they also did a spinal tap, which is causing a lot of discomfort. He currently has an infection that has lead to meningitis.

My wife and daughter were able to see him and his mother the other day. They were hoping to see him again today, but were advised to wait a few days, as the doctors may need to do further procedures. I think they are going to implant intravenous tubes, as he's been having problem keeping those tubes attached.

He will probably be in the hospital at least another week, and frankly I'm not sure he will be able to recover fast enough to go back to college next semester, but that's just a guess on my part.

What a way to spend your holiday/semester break vacation!

    Bob,

Sorry to hear about the compounding complications. I'm hoping for you and your family that the worst is now behind him.

Sorry to hear that your daughters friend is having such a hard time. It is sometimes very difficult after brain tumours, a friend of ours had a big tumour removed successfully only to suffer a massive stroke 24 hours after the surgery, apparently as in your friends case a clot had broken loose and caused the stroke.

She was left with impaired vision and balance problems, but she is alive which is positive.

    Cheers Pat.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
as to whether the tumor is malignant or benign. The last we heard was they don't "think" it is malignant, but the pathology was not yet complete.

My understanding is his vision is now okay, but it was touch-'n-go there for a while. Originally I had heard he lost vision in one eye, but he actually lost vision in both eyes. Needless to say, he was terrified.

Good points re SCC. I'm later to the Subie fold than you and didn't think that way, especially as regards SCCA rallying. I picked up a mag called RallySport a couple of years ago but it went under, replaced sort of by RallyXS to which I subscribe. I like RallyXS but it is sometimes too glossy with the interviews of British athletes, entertainers and starlets. (For example, I had never heard of Atomic Kitten until I read about one of them riding along with Richard Burns.)

Greg, that's a problem I had with my 2002 WRX. Had the front end shaking at 15k when I took it in for service. They told me I'd have to pay for them being fixed and I asked why that was not a warranty issue. Dealer called Subaru and sure enough it became a warranty paid service. BTW-this is the only problem at all I've had on the WRX. Now at 22k and no further brake problmes.

Found a fast connection at my brother's house so here I am again!

Happy New Year to the whole crew!

The wife is tearing it up down here, shopping til she drops. Luckily, the exchange rate is 3.5 to 1, so the pace of spending is manageable. We'll give the Brazilian economy a little spike, too!

We baptized the little one yesterday, which was nice. Big reception and all, too.

Graham: my cousin's daughter is going to spend 6 months in Australia, student exchange type of thing. E-mail me later because I want to have your contact info just in case. It's very unlikely that I'd need it, but it puts the parents at ease to have a contact there. Also, feel free to share any tips you might have, like where to visit. She is staying in Brisbane.

No more Subie sightings, but I did see something funny - an ice cream salesman at the beach with a Subaru WRC hat! That's me in 20 years! :-)

I'll try to check in once in a while, hope everyone is doing well.

you picture yourself selling ice cream?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Not because I have to, but because I want to. I want to own a small ice cream shop on some beach, basically be a beach bum selling ice cream to all the kids. :-)

Maybe off the back of a Baja?

and all the while juice's theme song with be
van halen's 'i'm yr ice cream man - stop me when i pass on by...'
(don't know if that's the title but it is a line in the song ;))
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
"...all of my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy."

Yes, that's the title of the tune. Nicely covered recently by Martin Sexton.

juice could convert a little Subaru 360 van into an ice cream truck, or wait for the bigger Subie MPV.

Thanks to Serge and my recent travels, I think you'd do better selling gelato. ;-)

    juice,

Sounds like you're having a good time!

Ice cream man? How about converting Sandy into the first ice cream truck capable of driving on the beach? All you need to do is get the ice cream truck song. ;-)

Hi Crew. Hmmmm - I posted a "happy holiday" message on the 23rd, but it's not here. Oh well - Happy and Safe New Year to all of the Edmunds family. I wish you all a wonderful 2003 and I want you to know how much I appreciate your loyalty to Subaru and your friendship. You all mean a lot to me. Please be safe tonight if you are venturing out. I KNOW that the folks here are careful and know there limits, but that cannot be said for the "other guy/gal".

    Cheers!

just got up from sleep part two.

Yup, it's still raining. Pouring pretty hard.

Sleep, part three, here I come.

It's sunny today in Calif. Think I should give Subie a much needed shower. That should bring the rain back!

I'm not hung over... all I've done all day is clean a little house and read.

Last night was a non-event by my choosing. I was invited to a party but I'm not really that interested in the girl who invited me so I chose instead to be a bum and just stayed at home.

    Happy New Year, all!

solitude is a nice thing. Gives you time to reflect. Went to a friend's house for some dinner. Was actually home before midnight due to some tired children. Oh well, new year's is not that important for us. Missed the OB when I pulled into the garage last night and saw an empty spot where it should be.

Our 'daughter' (former exchange student) from Japan was with us from Christmas eve to New Years Eve. And it was non-stop till we all dropped from exhaustion, but we loved every minute of it. Parties, visits to friends and family, day trip to NY City, etc. By the time we got back from Newark Airport last night, we had to struggle to stay up to see the ball drop!!

Work begins again anew on Monday. To all my friends in the Crew, may it be a new year of plenty for all.

Serge, we have a pair of Motorola Talkabout 250 (bought 2 years ago) and a newer GE unit. The GE is a dog - noisy with limited range. The Moto units are expensive, but worth the money. We use them at Flea Markets, the mall, car to car, etc.

a roast leg of lamb, roasted brussel sprouts and a gratin of potato, gorgonzola and black truffle oil. Also an appetizer of fresh chevre and smoked salmon over baked potato wafers and finished with lemon basil ginger coulis. We drank pretty well too. :)

At midnight we trundled up to 34th street, beers in hand, to watch the neighborhood ball fall and wish the 46 year old ringleader dressed as baby new year a happy one.

Back to the house for walnut cream torte. Yes we're hung over today!
