A mellow New Year's Eve for us. Just stayed at home and grilled salmon teriyaki.

On New Year's Day, my wife and I had traditional Japanese ozoni soup with homemade mochi. Mmmmm. Good stuff.

We are in the midst of finalizing plans for Michael's Bar-Mitzvah on the 25th...how time has flown.

However there are lots of recalls/warnings about these units. Seems that if you have too much oil they boil over and the oil hits the flame causing one big fire... with an attached propane tank.
I haven't used one yet but a co-worker and neighbor use them often.

Hope everyone is safe and well rested.
BTW - Serge: "Best Buy" has a sale on this week on the Motorola T6250 22 channel combo FRS/GMRS radios. 1.0w on the shared FRS/GMRS (#1-7), 0.5w on FRS only frequencies (#8-14), and 1.0w on GMRS only (#15-22) channels. That is about as good as it gets. With rebate they come down to $25 each. I bought three last night.

Quiet New Year here. But I cooked a traditional dinner for us. A pork roast with saurkraut (sp) (with apples, potatoes and dried cranberries) and, what my kids call, "serious butter beans". I only make them once or twice a year, so it's "serious". My eldest son actually learned how to cook them last year and did it himself this year for his girlfriends family. Ah - traditions - a great way to start a year!
I actually got to drive in some snow last night. I didn't want to come home. The WRX handled great, but it is hard to stay slow due to road conditions. I feel compelled to show off. I stopped for fuel and some older gent. walked over from a nearby store to "check out that that fast one" he has heard about. I think he'll be stopping into a dealer soon after a 20 minute discussion that turned into taking him for a ride. Needless to say, my husband was not thrilled that I invited a total stranger to take a ride with me in a nasty snow storm. I guess I got caught up in the moment - freedom from home, snow and a fun car.
I hope to see you all tonight!

#1 Honda Accord EX 4-cylinder, 5-speed

#3 VW Passat GL 1.8 Turbo 4-cylinder, 5-speed
#4 Toyota Camry SE 4-cylinder, 5-speed

#8 Hyundai Sonata GLS 6-cylinder, auto
#9 Kia Optima LX 4-cylinder, 5-speed
#10 Saturn L200 4-cylinder, 5-speed
Based upon the points scoring, had C&D tested the base Legacy L against the Altima 2.5 SE 4-cylinder, the Altima clearly would have come in at #6.
Based upon the points scoring, had they tested the Legacy GT (more "features and amenities"), against the Altima 3.5 SE 6-cylinder, the Altima would still have come in at #6.
If they had tested a Legacy GT, it could probably have tied with the Camry at #4.
A very positive Legacy review otherwise, that the GT's wider tires and suspension mods would have improved.
Yet I am still not quite sure why I did it. I haven't bought snows since around 1985 for my F-150. One morning in late October I suddenly felt that this was going to be among the worst winters in years, and I decided not to fight the feeling. Strange.
Now about that stock market....
BTW - How is the OBW running with the head gasket work complete. Did they get everything back together OK? It sounds like Colonial (I assume you went back there) took decent care of you. I was happy with the Ford side of the house.

Ok..I'll pause for the shock, confusion, and perhaps indignation....
Ok...You all know how much I loved my WRX & (this is where it hurts, especially in the pockets) how much $$ I spent making it the way I wanted it.
What I didn't share in great detail was how botched up the Vishnu installation was on my WRX. I should have never done the installfest, car-club thing. I ended up taking it to a professional shop to salvage the unfinished install. Not too long after I began getting an uppipe leak that got worse. Additionally, I began getting another leak near the center pipe. Basically, my WRX never ran right after the Vishnu install. The ECU does not function smoothly w/the unichip. There are numerous posts about this over on the Impreza Club. It's subtle but there is some hesitation at half throttle. Vishnu has come out w/a piggyback electronics piece for the unichip to alleviate it...another $150 - $195. I also needed to replace my windshield as the two cracks from either side finally met each other in a spectacular way!
I also really missed having a moonroof/sunroof. It must have something to do with surviving the grey winter days in Seattle, looking forward to long summer days.
I also get the new car itch every couple of years but it usually results in researching different vehicles and getting brochures, nothing more.
I started this cycle by getting on the waiting list for the STi. I then started looking at the RAM p/u w/Hemi, the Mazda6 w/spt pkg, Kia Sorento, Honda Accord EX coupe/sedan, Saab 9-3 Linear, Mazda Miata LS, etc. What I realized was that any vehicle I get would have to have AWD or 4WD and have at least a sunroof.
I don't know exactly when the Wrangler came to be a consideration. You know, to me the Wrangler was always something that seemed to be a one-trick pony. It looked fun and all but I could never imagine it as my only vehicle. I started reading the Wrangler forums and researching the option pkgs. The more I read, the more I was hooked. Those Wrangler folks love their babies as much as the Soobie Crew! Even now, when people see my black Wrangler, they say "oh I miss my Jeep", or "I'm going to buy one again", etc.
The Wrangler interior is just a notch below the interior of the WRX. A couple of surprises were the more complete instrumentation (oil pressure & altmeter), better (more user friendly) cruise control, a 12volt outlet that also functions when the vehicle is off, much better cupholders, and a bigger, deeper console. I know it seems I'm justifying but these were things I noticed after I bought, not a part of my buying decision.
I stopped by the dealer on Sat to get a brochure and they desperately wanted to sell one to me. I knew that there was a $1000 rebate until 1/6. Long story short is that my payments dropped about $22 a month for the same term loan. I went w/a Costco deal that put me about 3.5% over invoice.
I have the 4.0 inline 6 w/HD 5pd manual tranny.
The options I have are:
Dual top (soft & hard)
A/C (came w/it)
Dana 44 rear azle
30" tire pkg
Cruise
Trac-lok
4wheel discs
Floor mats (came with)
The only thing missing from my wish list was the CD player & 7spkr system. I plan on adding a CD player or changer at a later date.
The color is black (oh well, a Wrangler should be dirty right?)
I miss my WRX a bit but the Wrangler is so different and so much fun in a completely different way that the pain of missing my wagon is not so much. I really enjoy sitting higher and am looking forward to really going offroad for camping and such. My first big trip will be the annual Whistler ski group in Feb. I did take a trip to my folks on Sunday. I brought back a 27" TV, CPU, and keyboard w/o folding the rear seat. I put the stuff through the passenger side into the rear seat. The passenger seat folds forward and completely up.
Well, I had to let you all know what I'd done. I still would like to participate on the Crew w/the Soobie knowledge I've gained. I hope that's okay. I really enjoy everyone here! Additionally, I have my set of Dunlop Wintersports on WRX OEM wheels to sell, along with new Hawk front brake pads still in the box, and Goodridge Stainless Steel brake lines still in the pkg.
Feeling sad, happy, and a bit guilty in Seattle,
Stephen
Actually instead of cancelling the Earthlink I recently "gave" it to the daughter in Hawaii for Christmas. Last year we gave the daughters in Hawaii and Texas each a computer (and the youngest got one when she went to college) to keep us all in touch a bit better. They have had 'spotty' ISP subscription, so their present THIS year is to have ISP continuously ... lol
I'm a bit surprised that you picked a Jeep of all the choices you had. Will you be tempted by the STi when it becomes available? ;-)
You are always welcome here, don't worry about that. :-)
-Brian
-mike
P.S. how much for the Goodridge lines?
is it safe to say you now agree with my opinion on modifying new vehicles?
personally, it's Never Touch The Powertrain Again. I won't spend real money on a car I'm carrying a loan on, either. tire & wheel upgrades... sure. suspension... maybe. powertrain NO WAY!!!
although you should've posted about your problems in Mods or Maint & Repair... we could've helped.
good luck with the Wrangler and yes I'm sure you're still welcome here. I suspected something was up when you stopped posting... I'll see you in the SC Cafe. :-D I've had friends with Wranglers and yes I do think they are a one-trick pony and I personally can't fathom how they fetch the prices they do today considering what you get. BUT, I'm happy if you're happy.
