Sounds familiar, I was just changing my oil in the rain...

I must've looked mighty dapper with a soggy/oily tank top! LOL

It is a slow day at work today so I am reading about how engines work. I am actually enjoying it. I finally understand how a boxer engine differs from an inline and V. Yeah!

I also ran across a webpage that gives a simple and easily understood explanation of what octane means. If anyone is interested:

I just returned from 2,000 miles of driving.
Went to SC to see the family and then went to the Outer Banks (NC) for a week.

SC was hot as usual, but it was nice seeing my family. My parents went to the OBX with us for a few days. We stopped at a North meets South nasioc meet on the way there. It was strange seeing some of my NY/NJ Subaru buddies at South of the Border (cheesy mini-resort in SC).

The Outer Banks is NICE! I actually missed my Outback Sport and came down with a slight case of Forester XT envy. I really had an itching to drive on the beach. We took the WRX wagon and it was loaded down with a Thule Excursion box.

Cleaned my Amsoil air filter yesterday and found a cigarette butt in the airbox!

Patti - Great story about the STi!!

Slow day on the board. I just had to post something in MTM so that the day wouldn't be a complete blank.

Patti: sent you an e-m about the XT's final drive ratio and the debate it's generating. Check your inbox, please.

This may be a Cafe topic, but anyone familiar with Tucson, i.e. what to do there? We're going for a wedding and should have 2-3 days free afterwards.

To bring it back on topic, I was bummed, because I found an Outback I could rent, but it won't be big enough for all the people and luggage we'll have with us. I'm sentenced to a week in a minivan instead! :-(

It's a shame you don't have more time. If you wanted to go on a great trip to Mexico, I have a wonderful link for a vacation. I'd take it myself, but I'm not sure I could handle it. I never see links posted here at Edmunds, so I don't know if it's against the rules. If someone tells me it's okay, I'll post it. My husband's cousin runs this company that does tours into Mexico from the U. S. on horseback.

Shame about the Outback. If only we had the 7 seater!!

As an aircraft buff, I went and walked around a 'junk yard' sort of operation. Cool to still see WWII stuff at that time.

Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is very cool. I think one of the best museums in the country. Great birding in the spring and fall. A day trip to Nogales would be fun.

Great thriftshops in Tucson. Must be due to the sunbirds retiring there and then downsizing. Good jumping off point for Guaymas and points south, but no offense to Patti, I think I'd prefer the Mexican busses to horseback! Kartchner Caverns is supposed to be spectacular, but access and reservations are limited.

any horsback riding anyway, but for others....Am I permitted to post the link?
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
    Patti,

That would be great if we could get an official answer on the XT. There's been so much exchange on that particular topic!

Tours of Mexico on horseback -- that sounds so cool! Too bad I don't ride, but it sounds something my wife would like! Something to think about for when the baby gets old enough!

If you can't post the link, email me?

This isn't my "table," I'm hanging out with the Crew because I'm an owner and I like peeking in here :-)

Let's see, the member agreement says you can't promote any products for personal gain, and the horses aren't yours, so it seems to pass the sniff test. But you better be quiet about Subarus or Karen may tou you!

    j/k!!! LOL

If they had the 7 seater, I'd not only rent it, I'd probably buy it.

I rode horses mostly when I was little. In fact, technically, my brothers and I still own a small ranch on some land in Guiauba, Brazil.

Time to protect new WRX from the blazing sun! What do people use these days, which tint films are all the rage? I've used Madico 20% on my Forester 3 years ago. Back then, it was mostly a choice between Madico and 3M. Now the same tint shop tells me they're using Johnson -- I've never heard of them before... any ideas, are they good or so-so?

Hi all, I had the 30,000 mile service done on my WRX last week. Bad mistake. Among the things done was changing the coolant. 30 miles from home the next day I was sitting in the lot of a service station looking at the remainder of my antifreeze on the ground and waiting for a tow truck dispatched by my local dealer. The hose had somehow come loose and drained it all out. There was damage done to the engine, at least one head gasket has been blown. I was promised the car back today but after talking to a national tech rep the local service dept. is tearing the engine completly apart to make sure the block or heads did not crack. (I saw the temp going up on the highway and made it to the next town. Just as I pulled off the highway the temp went all the way up and the engine started knocking.) So I have my '92 Toyota pickup to drive for the next week or so. I told the service manager today to check the TSB about the clutch judder. My car has only done that once or twice in cold weather (a great improvement over the '98 Forester) but I figured I might as well get it done too.

I'll keep everyone posted how this comes out.

Why would they have undone the rad hoses? There is a drain plug that you are supposed to take out. Seeing as I do 30K services all the time now, we've pretty much gotten it down to a science. That's a major bummer :(

PS: twrx: Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Bummer Bruce! Man, that just stinks. Make sure they take care of everything, you might want to open up a case and have Patti get tech support for the dealer.

Chat was great, at least. I think we broke an attendance record - the list of names actually scrolled down to the 2nd page! Previous record was 1 name less, IIRC.

Sorry to here about the overheating. If it was indeed the result of improper work performed by the dealer, you may what to try to bargain for an extended warranty. Although they seem to be diligent in attacking the problem, who knows if hidden damage will rear it's ugly head in the future. We don't want you to have to post about your catastrophic engine failure after the warranty expires.

Who else will wax the inner side of the rims when you rotate them? Torque every bolt to spec (after polishing the bolt of course)? ;-)

    -juice
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
I'm not polishing the bolts after every auto-x, dude. I might buy a new set to use on the street, though.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
You don't put another wax coating on the lugs AFTER you tighten/torque 'em down? ;-)

I'm betting the reason they pulled the hose, rather than opening up the petcock, is that you get the old coolant out much faster that way (larger diameter hole). Not the right way, especially when you don't resecure the clamp, but it works. Of course, they don't take into consideration the possible damage done to the hose, especially an older, more brittle one, by bending it out of the way to allow the coolant to flow.

Here's another dealer "trick" I saw: when changing the oil on a 1st gen. Forester, they pulled the plastic clip from only one side of the plastic splash shield, then unbolted it, allowing it to hang down, supported only by the other clip. This could result in the plastic shield cracking. I know, I know: it doesn't offer much protection anyway, but still, I wouldn't want it done to mine. I guess any shortcut they can take and get away with, they will. After all, it isn't their own personal vehicle, and most people aren't OCD, like we are, and wouldn't even notice.

    Just my .02.

I can't remember if my '99 2.5RS had one of those, but if it did I ditched it in short order.

I know for sure I ditched the one that came on my ex-wife's 2000 Miata.

    -Colin
  • leo2633leo2633 Member Posts: 589
I've thought about ditching mine, but I figured it might serve some useful purpose, so I always put it back after changing the oil and filter.

is a happy undercarriage. And I am happier when I have to work on a clean car... I like the splash guard.

    Steve
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
My Miata has one, but why remove it? It doesn't block access to anything, does it? The oil pan and filter are behind it.

I guess for someone like Colin, who doesn't keep caps on his tire valves, it's for easier access to something. I do not think the RS has one, at least not as big as the Forester's.

Kate - I'm a tint noob, but I've never heard of Johnson. Most folks seem to have 3M, Madico or Llumar.

Bruce - Good luck. That really stinks!

Well I convinced my sister in law to join the Subaru crowd, she asked my advice and naturally I suggested legacy or forester.

She tried all of the competition including CRV, Rav4,tracker, Camry, Altima, and Accord, she liked the Legacy, hubby who does not drive liked the forester today she is picking up a new XS forester in Blue with grey cladding.

      Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Cool, Pat. Tell her congrats from us.

No XT? Didn't need that kind of power? :-)

She didn't want the premium package, eh?

    -juice
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Nope she is happy with the XS, although she is suffering from sticker shock, she paid$37,995,on the road, her last car was a chevy Corsica and I think basically the dealer paid you to take one of those off their hands, LOL.

      Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah but the funny thing is the XS is STILL THE BETTER DEAL!

    Hahahahahaha!

OK it's Friday and my meds have worn off. ;-)

    Priscilla is priceless.

A very powerful movie is Gallipoli, with a very young Mel Gibson. Tale of two young Australians in WWI. I have to limit by watching, it make me choke up every time.

  • grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
    G'day

No, I was overeseas when Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was released and it's not the sort of thing that pops up on TV. I'd love to see it, as it is highly appreciated. However, I should stress that Australia is not over-run with transvestites.

Gallipoli is a favourite, if a bit harrowing. Australians are proud of their war heritage.

The Australian film industry is long and creative. The world's first Full Length Feature, Ned Kelly was made in Australia in 1906, about five years before they caught on elsewehere. The industry is healthy but tends to be dwarfed by US content. It's odd though that the costs of production here are so low that many US features actually shoot in Sydney and Melbourne. If you ever wonder why the accents are a bit odd, it's probably an Australian.

    Cheers

    Graham

Man is Agent Smith cool in drag! I tell my students at school, "have you ever heard of Hugo Weaving? ("no") "You know he is Agent Smith in the Matrix and he once played a drag queen in a movie." ("Get out of here!")

Anyway we rented that movie thinking it was that "To Wan Fu...." movie with Wesley Snipes (which when we saw it was pretty funny too.)

Priscilla should be considered a cult classic as is say "Buckaroo Banzai" or "Exit to Eden".

Just my 2 cent movie thoughts!
