Well, it was quite like that... not that there's anything wrong with that.

I appeared on NPR's Car Talk in September 1996. I was billed then as America's youngest Buick LeSabre owner. I later traded that LeSabre in on the Forester.

In 1981 I appeared onscreen for several seconds on ABC's regional broadcast of the Georgia-Florida football game in Jacksonville.

In 1993 I was interviewed live by the NBC affiliate in Charleston, SC at the first Clinton inaugural ball.

In 2000 I was interviewed and quoted in a feature article in the Norfolk, VA Virginian-Pilot about Old Blandford Church and Cemetery. I was attempting to locate my great-great-great-grandfather's grave there.

I currently have a very limited amount of fame in that I write a bimonthly column for a pharmaceutical industry trade magazine. We'll see how long that gig lasts.

I believe my parents have that picture of me playing the game. I need to look for other pictures there as well (some of my baby pictures so we can see how much Brogan looks like me :)

The 'grand' prize was a new Schwinn bicycle. I think I got a few food prizes and some board games.

Since we seem to be talking about media fame, I appeared as an extra on "Kramer vs. Kramer" for a few seconds. I was one of the school kids in the background as Dustin Hoffman drops off his son at school.

We were on location for the entire day (had to shoot all the different "seasons") and I got to walk by Dustin a dozen times or so. Pretty exciting for a 3rd grader!

Quoted in WSJ about car leasing.
Quoted in Bloomberg about US v. Foreign Cars.

Probably a few others, but can't remember off hand.

It was Gulf War I - I believe the January 15, 1991 issue, with Saddam on the cover. They did a feature article about three Japanese teenage foreign exchange students living in the USA, and they sent a team to our home for photos and interviews. Only one catch - you need to be able to read Japanese, etc., as it only appeared in the Asia/Pacific editions! It was apparently bumped from the US copy when the shooting began...

Oh, and I was listed in the little WSJ article on the Outback this past Spring...

that's like thirty years ago in Singapore. I was part of a group, "Rusty Blades" , participating in a talent contest on National TV [there's only one there]. Didn't make it far... the competition was tough.

paisan: Nope, I was an invited guest. ;-P

A very long story, barely political, basically involved me doing some gopher work for a friend of mine when I lived in VA and getting an invite as a thank you.

Dave: "Rusty Blades" could be a good alias for you! ;-)

I loved Bozo. Brian takes the cake.

Good to see your name in a positive light in print, Patti. But we already knew that about you. ;-)

Congrats, Patti ! I'm not sure how Subaru could best measure the value (quantify somehow) the value of your work here, but there's no question that it's quite significant to those of us in the know. I'm a little surprised that SoA doesn't try to leverage it more (let more people know), but the positioning is tricky, both vis-a-vis the consumer and the dealer network.

It seems to me that this type of customer service "story" - through PR channels instead of advertising channels - might be an effective media strategy.

Suffice it to say that knowing there is a human specialist/"customer advocate" with sufficient authority to intervene in sticky situations when the dealer network is not performing as desired (which happens with any make, even the premium ones), is worth many times more than any warranty provision to us. And I suspect that can be said of everyone who has seen/heard you in action.

You might even sell more extended warranties if people had more confidence that they could get their warranty honored in the event of a failure, who knows ?

Thanks again to you, Patti, and Subaru, for taking good care of us.

    Patti,

I think you can see me about 1:45 into the movie. I'm in the scene where Dustin drops his kid off the school. Behind them are a stream of kids being walked to school by their parents. Right before the scene ends, you'll see this one chubby 9-year old Japanese kid wearing a blue parka (with those fuzzy hoods) and a green bookbag walking in with an Asian-actress mom.

I was paid $60 for doing that and I thought I was one of the richest kids in the world! :-)

I've been interviewed several times starting as just a kid for the local newspaper on various topics. The nicest spot was one in Zeit Magazin in Germany on social trends, when I worked as a market researcher over there.

I once did a sales presentation at the Hotel Ritz in Paris - everyone there was there to hear me speak, and they all controlled 9 figure budgets.

Talk about being out of your class ! Man, I didn't know how to behave ! (I won the contract though...)

PR has a *huge* impact. My wife could give you a 3 hour lecture on that.

Think of it this way. You see a front page ad for ACME. Fine, but most people skip right over it.

Then you see a front page article about ACME. The content doesn't even matter, heck it might say the exact same thing as that ad, but it'll garner far more attention.

Alternately, you see an IBM computer for $800, and a nearly identical "El Cheapo Special" for $700. Nearly every consumer will pay the extra $100 for the name, that's what image will do for you.

Just try to find a CEO (of a major company) with dirty finger nails, or one that doesn't get manicures regularly.

    Image is everything.

Well, not quite, but I have been quoted or mentioned in:

    * Drive magazine
    * Business Week
    * Wall Street Journal
    * Autoweek (twice)

    -juice
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
Consider the distribution of BW & WSJ, not to mention Autoweek. Drive must have a circulation in the mid six figures at least. The trade mag I write for only reaches about 25,000.

    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You think circulation is really that big? I had my photo (with my daughter and Sandy) next to my letter.

I got interviewed once by the "Bosse Spirit" our school newspaper. My students had painted old Mac SE's with pictures of fossils, dinosaurs, Sponge Bob and other artwork. Does that make me famous?

I see what you mean, Ed. I think it's for a year or two, though, right? That's still at least 170k.

Cool Juice, do you actually work for a living or do you just type on these boards. I myself am a dedicated school teacher who would never use his school's T1 to post on boards....

Grumble grumble - Drive magazine - grumble grumble. Never received a single one (never got a new owner survey either). Maybe I'll have better luck with the next Subaru I buy...

...maybe 15 years ago, on 'Unsolved Mysteries'. Crew came to town to film a segment regarding an auto-pedestrian fatality that occurred locally. Producers recruited 4 of us ambulance guys to wheel the patient into the ER. I looked the oldest (lucky me!), so I got to play the ER doc.

And no, I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

    Cheers!

this was getting embarrassing! Thank you all for your nice notes and comments. It's quite the motivator.

I'm so impressed with the amount of fame on this board! Whenever we can think of a way to do an Edmunds meet somewhere, I'm going to have to bring and autograph book!

Funny, but actually DC and the surrounding areas have power. I hope paisan made it home safely, though. Who else is in that mess?

Sorry I was late for the chat. We did a late night run to buy the clearance stuff from the local garden center. Sandy was packed to the gills!

Anyone local that likes yellow squash, come on by...

I am working 11p-8am this week. So I was at home asleep, woke up when the AC went off!!!

Headed over to the shop in NJ and we had AC there :) We actually did part of an install of a TurboXS UP/Turboback exhaust, and I installed a shift kit on the SVX. Then I drove right into manhattan, took me ~20 min from the shop in Kenilworth right down to wallstreet. Our place has their own power so we are running :) I actually had the whole tunnel to myself :)

PS: Juice you gonna come by the Summit Point Event this weekend?

Welcome back, Brenda. The boards were a little slower than normal, and not just due to your absence! ;-)

paisan: you drove IN to NY? Isn't the whole world trying to get out? LOL

I'll respond to your Q in the Events thread.

    Thanks, Dave.

Yep, I'm gonna be a dad. The baby is a boy, due sometime between December 15-19.

My questions here will now begin to veer toward fitting child seats and cartop carriers, tinting windows, cleaning baby barf from upholstery, etc.

I sincerely hope I can get away with continuing to own the Forester; I truly don't want to drive anything larger than a Legacy-sized vehicle. Most of that is psychological - if I'm going to drive so much I at least want to enjoy what I drive. I also think back to my own childhood when my mom and dad drove a Ford Mustang and Pontiac GTO respectively. If they were able to get away with driving fun, two-door sports coupes while toting around a single child, why can't I?

I also hope I can multitask as well as some of you parents on Town Hall! ;-)

I'm sure those are topics for another time. Right now we feel truly lucky and blessed that the little fella is healthy and that there are no complications.

    Ed, congratulations and good luck!!!

    re: Power outtage
I had to walk down from the 39th floor in mid-town Mahattan yesterday. I left at 5:00 and got home at 9:45 via the ferry.

Building power was sporadic, so they gave us today off. :-)

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Very exciting news, congratulations.

The only questions is: David, or Michael? Maybe Michael David? It has to have a K in it, at least. ;-)

Forester's size is perfect with one kid. If you really need more than that the 2005 Legacy wagon would do the trick.

Don't worry too much about the seat fabric, it's the car seat itself that ends up getting dirty. Put a towel under it to protect the fabric if you want.

Wow Dennis, I guess you have power at home? Or are you using a notebook on battery power with dial-up?

We're in Middlesex County (Central NJ), which wasn't really affected (except for a little flicker).

lark6: What size aftermarket sway bar (tether strap) are people using on their Graco convertible car seats to reduce the sway? I like the seat but it leans a little more than I'd like.

We were in the lab, deep in the bowels of IBM, when the first glitch occured. One of the ion beam tools took a bad hit - you could hear the turbo pump begin to spool down - and we all came running. Then we were plunged into darkness for about 10 seconds until the generators got the emergency lights on. Only one of the five systems survived. I bought it when Calif was going thru the rolling blackouts in '01, and was able to justify $15k for a 10kva 208v 3phase UPS (what is $15k on a $1+M purchase??), so we were able to bring it down in an orderly fashion.

Ran our home generator from 5pm until about 11 last night, and again beginning at 6am, trying to save the freezer. But we also had a comfortable evening with lights, we could pump and heat water, enjoyed a DVD movie, etc., so it was not too bad. NYSEG got power on a little after 9am. Sorry to have missed the chat, but it was a night to stay close with the family.

I am at work now, but it is pretty tragic. It will be a while before the lab is fully back on line.
