it's not a Subie but have you bothered looking into the Kia Sorento?

Before you say "KIA, are you crazy?"

It's got some very good reviews, maybe Paisan could chime in on it...I know he's been in tap with the forum more than I have....
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Yeah, I mentioned it, but my daughter doesn't like it. Frankly, I like the Sorento; but again, I think an OBS is the best car for her, all things considered. We'll see...

Juice, yeah if she can handle that, she can handle just about anything. She just needs to learn to become detached and professional. I can't think of a better situation for that to happen. I know she's both excited and a bit terrified about working/learning in that type of environment.

Her next ride will be mostly for commuting, right? Even then, mostly riding solo. I don't see why she'd need all the space of a CR-V.

Is AWD a pre-requisite because of the lack of snow removal in your area?

got a surf board that would fit inside the CRV. On an OBS it would go on the roof.

AWD? Well we want it for all the obvious reasons, and who knows where she'l be in 2 or 3 years.

Married with 2 kids? I doubt it. :o)

I think it's overkill for her needs. Too bad she didn't like the cheaper Element.

it's all overkill, but that's what Bob wants. I presume Mrs. Bob feels the same? :)

    Still hoping for an OBS.

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
It's NOT what I want. It's Mrs. Bob who is more in favor than I.

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I meant a new AWD vehicle as a opposed to a considerably cheaper and reasonably functional used FWD vehicle.

that was the part I was (teasingly) wondering about Mrs. Bob... not who liked the CR-V and who liked the OBS.

Coming from a Prelude, an RS sedan would seem immensely practical. Heck, an Echo would.

But...and this is a tough one. We are car guys, the bottom line is it's hers, and she has to be happy driving it. If there are any regrets at least she won't blame you for it. Actually, that might be what puts her in a Subie the next time around.

CRV engine fire issue has made her (and my wife) re-think the CRV.

Who knows, maybe we'll keep the Prelude a bit longer. Now that we know her clinicals are just a five minute walk from her apartment, as opposed to a 1/2 hour drive, which they could have been, some of the pressure is off.

You have a semester to think about it.

Shoot, it takes me, oh, 7-8 years to get off The Fence.

Well she's had an older car now for 4+ years. We told her some time ago, well before this latest incident, that the next car we got her would be new (if we can afford it).

There are family issues involved here too. As much as I would like to base this decision on purely a rational level, that may not be the case.

Well for me it comes down to safety. I think AWD is the safest drivetrain out there. If I want it for myself, I surely would also want it for my kids.

Yeah, I suppose we could get a late model Civic, or something like that I suppose; and she does have a FWD Prelude. But if I have the choice, and we can afford it, I'd rather it be an AWD car.

also has safety issues to consider. The Impreza is number one in class in IIHS testing. The Forester is also number one in it's class. The CR-V is somewhat below the Forester and the Element is several notches below the CR-V and scores poorly due to the door design. I want to put our daughter in an OBS when she goes to St. Louis for her master's degree fall of '05. Good luck with your decision.

Hey Bob, where does someone go to sign-up to be your kid? I want on the gravy-train too :-)

LOL. I was just thinking the same thing, BTW, Bob does it absolutely have to be brand new, you could get a used OBS, Forester, or Legacy for that matter used with warranty remaining that would make more sense to me.

      Cheers Pat.

Wow, go away for one week and to many posts to read.

Was in Sarasota, Fla last week, then three days at Disney. Kids had a blast!

Saw 4 Subies in Fla. Two Outbacks, a Forester XS and an L wagon.

Also, saw three (yes, three) Suzuki XL-7's in the parking lot at my in-laws place in Sarasota. They caught my wife's attention and she wants to look into them. Anybody have any experiences with them?

Sure, we're not locked into anything. If we find such a car, yeah we'll look at it. That's how we ended up with the '92 Prelude.

I would get a GC8 in a heartbeat if I were in her shoes ;-)
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
She's got a surf board that would fit inside the CRV. On an OBS it would go on the roof.

Unless she's surfing alone, a board inside the car will take up valuable space. Also, when you're at the beach you don't want to leave a board in the car because of the heat (wax melting, board warping, etc.)

    -Dennis
just thinking of ways to keep her in a Subie. :-)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You want AWD, can afford it, so I see no reason not to get it. Your price range does limit your choices though. Don't forget the Suzuki Aerio SX and the Matrix AWD. Those are closer in price to the OBS.

A CR-V would have to be about 2 years old to be in that price range, with just one year of warranty left.

Jon: I drove an XL7 with the wife a while back. It's sort of a strange feeling to drive such a narrow but tall, and long, vehicle. Plus the 3rd row is near useless. We didn't really like it, check out my review in the Town Hall Test Drive Team thread in News & Views.

From the X3 review at the Town Hall Test Drive:

In corners you can feel the AWD system lugging down the turns but it's not as drastic as say the Subaru system.

    Huh?

Unforunately, posting to that topic is limited to just the reviewers. How do we submit feedback and questions?

    Was that blueguydotcom's review?

I can post there, being a member of the team, but the topic is for reviews, not really comments/questions.

I wish someone (print or online) would do a head-to-head comparo of the X3 and Forester XT. The report would be, ahem, interesting.

Well seeing as the X3 isn't shipping yet, I'll have to wait to do that.

I saw a blue X3 two weeks ago on a BMW dealer's lot just up the street from the Subaru dealership where I bought my Forester.

I saw one parked in the IKEA @ Paramus :-p

I personally don't like how it looks.

Weird I heard they weren't shipping til mid-late Feb.

Is about 10 min from BMW-USA, my friend works there so it was likely a press-car or mfg-car.

    Cool - I am a Monkey (1968). I'll be 36 this year, it's a 12 year cycle.

Sat in an X3 at NAIAS, it was OK, I think I liked it better than Ken did given the impressions he shared. Packaging sure is better than the X5.

I bet they'll sell well, watch.

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Yeah, the X3 I sat in at the SF Auto show didn't impress me. But yes, they will sell just because of the blue and white propeller mark.

Monkeys use all four limbs to travel - how very appropriate. ;-)
