Why not the optional (non-BBS) anthracite 17" WRX wheels? They're Subaru-approved, so they must be able to withstand some abuse.

Well, noone is complaining about the ride with 16"s right now, so basically they deal with the potholes well enough.

With 17"s, I think we'll see a lot more people complain. The STi's ride is stiff, for instance.

We'll have to see how the GT's suspension is tuned, but that won't fly by the wife if hitting a pothole makes a big enough THWACK to wake up the baby.

If so, it's back to XT vs. Outback GT.

can WRX wheels go on FXT?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Oh no, Kate is next. That would put 4 of my close, long-term Crew buddies in an XT before me! Then Ed's kinda leaning on the edge of the fence, too!

Did some hurricane occur near the Fence, and my pants were stapled down or something? :o)

    I need therapy...where's Ross?

Where's Ross when I need him soooo badly?

    FXT silver please.

89600 mi on odometer, 5400 to go...
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
The XT tire has a 60-series profile, the new GT tire has a 45-series profile. If Loosh were to go to a 17" rim, but keep the tire profile to 55 or 50, I think he should be okay.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Well, for every extra inch of wheel, subtract half-inch of sidewall, if the odo still matches. Then pick where you'd be comfortable.

Plus-1, you're looking at a 225/50x17" tire. I've read somewhere that it's not wise to go Plus-2. for the very reasons you state.

He could also do a 215/55x17 too.

Loosh: there's also the popular SSR Competitions.

    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, that's probably a taller side wall than he had on his GT, so ride would still improve. Plus the springs allow a lot more travel.

go the Plus-1 route for 9 months of the year. Put a good set of dedicated snow tires on the 16" rims he now has for the other 3 months, and sell the stock all-season Geolanders.

    Bob
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
That's pretty much what I do, except that I wore the Geolandars out and the tires I replaced them with (SP 5000s) don't qualify as dedicated snows. Then again, this has been one of the nastiest winters I can recall in a number of years (1994? '96? whichever one had the 30" single snow event).

I wonder who'd buy them, though: an XS or last-gen Forester owner?

    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Hmm, my tires have gotten noisy lately. I wouldn't really be looking for Geos, though.

Loosh, my P1's have withstood some serious abuse in NYC, NJ and PA. I am completely confident in them.

I would be more leary about the OZ SL's but Ed runs them in PA, and a local nabisco'er runs them in NYC/NJ. I'm sure both have seen massive potholes. :-)
Hopefully, the Rota Attack issue is resolved.

For silver rims Loosh, SSRs are nice rims but expensive, I am running 50 series on my 17" and i don't find them offensive at all, no different actually than the 16" with 55 series tires.

      Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
So *that's* the tire issue I'm having, the vehicle on top of them!

Patti: they forgot the turbo in my '98 Forester L, any chance they'll issue a recall to have that corrected?

I would miss all my accessories. And I do have a moonroof. :p

    -juice
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
Yes, these would be summer rims and I would use the stockers in the winter.

    Yes, it would be 225/50/17

No, WRX rims will not work because the WRX and the Legacy use a +55 offset and the Forester and STi use +48 offset. Yes anything but +48 rubs. Right, Ed? ;-)

Kate- come on in! Water's fine!

Maybe I should budget for a Juice moonroof....
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
to put in an aftermarket moonroof in an MT XT. I'd figure a good $1k or so for one similar to the OEM one (although nothing will be THAT huge).

Am I the only one OTF considering (ok, I've made up my mind, just will wait until April-ish) the move from Outback -> FXT? Loosh was a Legacy -> FXT.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Adler & Mandell did both of ours, $300 for a pop-up glass roof, $900 for power (worth it). One-touch open, close, programmable to close when you remove the key. Very neat. It's 17" x 30", decent sized but not even close to the PP Forester's.

Stock offset is +48, I actually have +40 which moves the rims even farther out from the body. This is also one reason the Forester can take much bigger tires than any Impreza can.

    Right now I'm:

Forester -> XT or Legacy GT or Outback GT or 7 seater

    or

Legacy L -> Legacy GT or Outback GT or 7 seater

    or

    Miata -> WRX STi

OK the last one is purely my imagination but I thought it'd be fun to toss it in.

Kate: Was that you doing laps in the parking lot to run up the odometer? Why wait? I'm sure Santa Cruz Subaru has a bunch on their lot -- silver too.

juice: LOL! So would I be included in that recall?

    Ken
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, only early production 1998 models. :-)

In our local auto trader, 2002 3.5 Altima Se, 60.000 miles $16,500 CDN. Get this, new brakes, tires, tranny and engine under warranty.

    (1) the price is less than half what this car sold for new.
     (2) doesn't say much for Nissans longevity.

Also saw in a parking lot yesterday late model Honda CRV with the whole front rusted clean off the hood.

      Cheers Pat.

All Kate has to do is jump in the car and drive to the Philly Auto show :) Should take care of the miles needed on the return trip

Mom just called- all my pestering plus my own purchase touched off some falling off the fence. She and Dad are up the road at my dealer closing on a 2004 LL Bean demo for $26k.

    Pretty funny.

    to multiply in families!

Juice - I'll investigate that recall for you immediately. Maybe you should report it to the NHTSA? Well, after we get you off the floor that is!

Just think if there was an I Don't Like Subaru's Why Do You? discussion (and I don't mean the X3/FX 35 comparo <g>).

Y'all could be at 50,000 posts in two months just from jumping on every poor miscreant who happened to darken the door in it:-)

Well, due to not enough traffic and too many salespeople on the floor I've left the Subaru store and gone to a Mitsubishi and Chevrolet store about half as far away from my home. I'm still going to drive my OBS of course, at least until I can pass it to our daughter and upgrade to some turbo flavor. If the STi has doubled on insurance rates then I may have to consider either the Forester or Baja although by then who knows what all will be available to choose from.

LD- Sorry to hear about the job change. Hate to lose a knowledgeable sales person (we need as many as we can get). Oh well, best of luck with the new job and hopefully it'll work out well enough for you to get a Forester STi in a couple of years :-)

Those of you who attended the Baltimore Auto Show back in 2001 (!!!!!) will recall that the LL Cool Bean is what we all tried to talk them into in the first place, but they bought a TL instead. So now The Accord goes away to make room for the car they should have bought 4 years ago.

BTW, if anyone is in the market for a babied 1998 Accord EX V6 with 65k on it let me know.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I remember meeting you parents. If you recall, they are friends of some former neighbors of ours, when we used to live in Union Square, back in the 1970s through 1986.

were you refering to a photo of the rusty CRV hood? If so I will look out for it at the parking lot do not know if it is Regular, it was just something I spotted while we were shopping.

Too bad, but I can't blame you, ya gotta earn a living!

I did appreciate your input in several threads here, FWIW. Thanks.

Hey, now you can spy for us, let us know about upcoming changes to the EVO. ;-)

Yes Pat. Try to snap a pic.

Thank goodness that Loosh was able to recruit his parent into the Subaru fold since I'm sorry to say that my sister called today to tell me that she had just bought a BMW Z4 3.0i. Oh well, as long as she lets me take it for a test spin some day. Funny thing happened to her and her husband as they were driving home from the dealer, they were taking back roads to enjoy the roadster and got a ticket for speeding! What do you bet that me in my stealth FXT would have snuck by without attracting any untoward attention? ;-)
