Yeah, the bugeye Rex seats were excellent. I think the Impreza seats just fit me better. Even the OBS. The XT's seats have a harder bottom cushion too.

An OBXT will be very tempting for my wife. :-)

Steve: That's great news. You must be relieved.

juice: The new Legacy more than beat the RS6 in a review. It took it out on a head-to-head on the Tsukuba circuit!

Note to Subaru: the Crew needs to verify this. Please send both vehicles to my address immediately. Better yet, we need to do a long-term test of both vehicles. Very long term. Avant and wagon. Limited please.

I will return them in March, 2020. Maybe. :o)

Steve- Glad to hear about your dad.

I finally received the Suabru All weather kit from taking the test drive in the XT back in November. SOA included a note apologizing for the delay- it seems they had a better turn out for the test drive promo than they thought. It's a good kit- flashlight, first aid kit, blanlet, emergency candles, water, matches, and shovel. A good item to keep in the car year round.

Would a pair of WRX not bolt right in,in place of the XT seats? you see WRX seats for sale all the time at givaway prices.

      Cheers Pat.

That's cool Mark. I never received that offer. Not sure how they pick their mailing lists.

I'm kind of waiting to see if anything happens with aftermarket/STi seats for the Forester.

There were a pair of STi seats in mike's garage a few weeks ago and they looked mighty nice! It would be hard to find almost new '03 WRX seats by now. I don't want something "too used".

forester seats are like 1.5" (or maybe a bit more?) higher than WRX seats. I'd want to try them before assuming they would be a good fit.

Thats something to consider, although I have heard some folks find when installing WRX seats in a Legacy that the WRX driver seat on its lowest setting is the same height as the legacy seat on the highest setting. Go figure.

      Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I didn't know there were settings. How much can you vary the stock height of each?

    -juice
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
What I was refering to is the adjustable seat cushion height, not the height of the entire seat, that variable is a fixed height but the seat cushion at least on the drivers seat can be raised up and down.

    Sorry for the confusion.

      Cheers Pat.

We are all greatly relieved as well. We spent some time down there (NJ), and have talked each day. He is very happy to be home, and promises no heroics until they heal.

    hey all,

so i guess this is where i'm supposed to officially throw my hat into the ring. i mean, the title is "meet the members", right?!

well, i just joined today (edmunds townhall) but have been following posts for several months now while researching a new car purchase (december). as the title suggests, it was indeed a subaru (forester to be exact).

anyway, i just wanted to pop in and say hi.

we're all pretty easy to get along with!

Dennis- I've been thinking about that as well. I wonder if we'd get to keep our bun warmers? And on a related note, what was up with that pic posted in my "FXT+$1K" thread over "there"? I wasn't sure how to take that one..... I mean, afterall, I'm thrilled at the idea of being a new Dad.... *shrug* whatever

Maybe I can arrange to have the dw come with when this gets performed. We can test the F-XT together 8)

As regards your question about what was up with the picture over there? They have an old saying in Ireland which is entirely appropriate, (what can you expect from a pig but a grunt)that I think would sum up the eejit that posted that.

Great news about your dad, Steve. The older ya get, it seems you get a little more fragile, (darn!).

Hey, welcome to the Subie bunch, Rob. Lot's of good stuff here.

I went to a place in the mountains this weekend. There was a snow on a driveway. I bravely decided to just drive through... and got stuck. I only was able to get out by sticking a board under the passenger-side rear wheel (see on the pic below).

    image

what is strange, as you can see, the driver side rear wheel is still on the dry ground, but the rear passenger-side wheel was spinning in the snow. I was wondering why LSD did not kick in, to transfer a power to the wheel on the pavement.

Did I expect too much of my poor old Silvius? Should I have a dealer to check my LSD?
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Hmm... you're right, your rear LSD should have directed power to the left-rear wheel :-(

    -Frank P.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
well, your front was high centered right, so both fronts were spinning. so, power should get sent to the rear. and with 1 wheel on pavement and the other on snow, the LSD should have kicked in. Maybe you didn't spin fast enough to kick it in? Did the left rear spin at all? My experience with the LSD on my Outback is that it reacts pretty quickly (with a little thunk). But, if you were not generating enough spin to get it to kick in, then you're stuck. JMHO, YMMV. :-)

Guess it's time to trade it in for a new F-XT ;-)

Both front wheels were spinning like crazy. The rear passenger-side one was spinning too (my dad stepped out of the car, to have a look). I was trying gears D, 3, 2, 1 and R. The rear passenger-side wheel continued to spin while the driver-side one was standing still. I did try to kick it really hard. There was some burning smell that started coming from underneath, so I stopped spinning wheels and went out to get a board and a shovel.

Still, it was so embarassing... the guy from another cottage went over that snow in his GMC truck like it was nothing.

I wonder if the fact that GMC truck has a higher clearance played some role. My Forester got its underbelly all "laying" on snow. Could that have played a role in LSD failure to engage?
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
it might not have been enough for the one wheel to pull you out if you were that high centered.

Wonder if the burning smell was the LSD slipping? Doubt it was the spinning fronts melting the snow...

I'd go and try this myself but all of our snow is melted now, except for a few 'mountains' in parking lots.

ok, thanks. Coming from the Legacy forum, I just wasn't used to crap like that. Now I know; I'll just let that thread die.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Looks like you were high centered on some "old" snow, which can be very dense and hard (or frozen). I say old, because the roads were obviously clear and dry and this looked like a pile of snow that had been shoveled or plowed into place.

Once a car gets stuck like that, you pretty much need to be towed off. All the traction in the world won't help if the bottom of the car is resting on the ground!

Don't feel bad, I've seen a lot of people get stuck like this over many years of skiing. You might want to check and make sure nothing was damaged under the car.

bah loosh, just call out idiots when you see them. a few sharp words and a rolleyes smiley would've done the job.

everyone tries to be a comedian. sometimes, it's not funny.

  • Here's a little offroading trick if you need to lock up the differential and get all the wheels spinning: apply the brake. Since your rear wheels are what needed locking up, you could have gently applied the emergency brake, which only closes the calipers on the rear wheels.

The brake trick is what I do when I hit seriously difficult terrain offroad. It "fools" the differential into applying the power evenly across both wheels.

Susan also got her message about the service program...just in time, I need to take it in for an oil change anyway
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I got one too. made me think of two things:

    1. I hope whomever really owns that VIN now gets the message. it definitely had headgasket issues and could benefit from the conditioner.

    2. I wouldn't mind owning a subie again... impatiently waiting to drive a new Legacy turbo. :)

Rob - Welcome to "the Crew"!

Loosh - I didn't see the pic since I checked it from work (certain pic host sites blocked). It appears I'm not missing much. It's too bad when someone hoses up a good technical discussion.

Any decisions on a tire yet? I'm wondering if it's good just to stick with a 16" to have a better tire selection. I would love to run SZ50EP's.

Kate - Maybe you should consider the OBXT with it's higher ground clearance. :-) Yeah, it looks high-centered on the hard packed snow. I've read about the brake trick on off-roading sites.

    -Dennis
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
Dennis you and Lucien crack me up. I would've already bought 17" wheels and been running 235/45-17 in your position. :)

(well-- considering the weather perhaps not using them quite just yet...)

    ~colin
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
235 = teh too big tire. 225 = teh too low profile tire.

    -Dennis
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
Forester XT owners are getting rubbing with 235s?

    ~c
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
    And I think you would need a 8" wheel for a 235.

    -Dennis
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Rob: welcome to the Crew! '98 Forester here, good choice.

Kate: from the pic, it look like you high centered and unweighted both the front and rear tires. The fronts look like you installed a 3" lift, but even the rears look like you have a 2" lift. With no weight on the tires, you weren't going anywhere.

So I don't think the rear LSD is at fault, it was the ground clearance.

    thanks for the warm welcome!

since we're on the topic of the lsd, is there a need to have the fluid changed after a "break-in" period? (not only am i new to subarus but i'm new to awd as well)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The gear oil should last at least 30k in there, maybe 60k miles in very light use.

Subaru doesn't even use a break-in oil for the engine, so no.
