it looks like Patti is getting a commission from Edmunds for each person she recruits for the chat. :)

Thanks for sharing the info, Patti!

    "See" you Thursday.

Just when I thought my position 'on-the-fence' was stable, my dw throws me a huge curve ball after going to the Milwaukee auto show the other day. First she mentioned she wasn't too keen on the F-XT seats (I mentioned that the other day). Now she says she likes the *current* Legacy GT sedan. I quickly showed her pics of the '05 GT sedan and she liked what she saw. Wait a minute, this is my ride, don't I get to pick? ;-)

So, for now, I'm still set on a F-XT (sleeper, practical, cheaper than the GT *she* wants), probably subject to her test driving one.

It looks like we will be sending Michael to camp this summer...Cedar Lake Camp (part of the New Jersey Y camps. It is located in Milford PA; so that means a trip up north in June...a day before to drive him from Newark to camp, and then maybe a couple of days afterwards to visit the city, my mom, and hopefully to get together with some of you. Most likely, we will be staying at Mom's house near East Windsor NJ. I'll post more details as we get closer, but this might be an opportunity to get together.

I live in East Windsor. You will see many Subarus around here. This should be a change from the limited number in South Florida. There are 2 dealers in the area that are very popular.
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    Serge-
or maybe you'll continue the trip to Lafayette, IN with the Crew then ;-)

Hey, if the weather is good, maybe we all converge at your Mom's house :D

Chat ought to be fun, then.

I guess the moonroof is so huge they figured you would have to hold the close button for about 7 minutes to close it fully. ;-)

Serge: let's plan a stop on your road trip, maybe on I-95 between DC and Baltimore. We'll get myself, Bob, Loosh, maybe Hutch and Mike, to join you for a meal.

You can see the NJ-area guys later on, during your stay. That should be fun.

    Serge-

It would be nice to have a NE gathering. Would you drive up, or fly and drive?

    Hey gang,

With the new TH format, Is there a way to get to Message Center without having to go through a few pages?

In the old format there was a link on the left side of the screen.

that is something they're working on, it's a 'bug'

I bookmarked the Subaru Crew page, this link here, see if it works for you:

    /direct/view/.eea1a91!

I start there and then use the Message Center since I'm subscribed to all the discussions that interest me.

I do the same, but I bookmark *all* the Subie discussions. That way I can keep abreast of every Subie-related thread here.

When I log on to Explorer, I go right to that bookmarked *All Subaru discussion* thread. It's really very simple, and it's just a 1-click deal, from when I log on. I also have my preferences set to most recent first. There are 9 pages of threads, but as often as I'm here, rarely does it ever get beyond page 1.

to remind them of things like "if it ain't broke don't fix it" since they can't seem to ever leave perfectly fine alone. Maybe she could also make them see the light of leaving invoice etc. for the most recent previous year available. I'd sure like to be able to look at a few 2003 cars and see the new vehicle info rather than "Edmunds Big Brother" knowing best what I want and need and depriving me of that info.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    Change is good :-)

Kens, as Patti mentioned, the Message Center bug is known (its biting me too). It's on the fix list.

Historical invoice data would be nice. Try the Contact us form and maybe it'll get on someone's wish list.

Sorry Brian, 5 inches of new today and gusts to 43. I'm still thawing out my eyelashes.

I took the studs off my Outback on Sunday and now the storms are coming in. Yeehaw!

Actually the Goodyear studs are worse than the Michelin M&S's but all 8 tires are 7 years old and stale.

Steve: Between storms here, low 50's, but still new snow in the hills.

Studless snows are nice - I love 'em, but they get eaten up pretty quickly in warmer weather. My summer tires aren't much good in snow.

Hmm.... maybe there's a different fence to sit on? :)

    Cheers!

Interesting concept from a local Nissan dealer, if you buy a car from them you get a package guaranteeing full replacement value for 6 years if the car is totalled or stolen and unrecovered.

I don't know the cost I will have to find out more if I can just for interest sake.

      Cheers Pat.

    Kate,

I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't hear about the '05 Foresters until late in the summer. Since it's not a new product intro, dealers usually only get the new specs until about July/August. SOA wants them to focus on getting rid of the '04s.

    Ken
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I doubt the '05 Forester will have many changes. In the 5 year cycle, it's the 3rd year. They usually do updates in the 4th year, like they did for the 2001 model (that one debuted in 1998).

So expect nothing, whatever we get will be a nice surprise. They'll probably add one or two little things as standard.

Looked into that depreciation package I refered to in post#19178 from local Nissan dealers.

Apparently it is something they are including in the price of the car, now I am sure it ain't free but it is an interesting concept, if the car is wrecked or stolen and unrecovered within 6 years you get the full cost back.

The kicker is full replacement of what you paid, not what a new vehicle will cost at a later date, but still it is sort of peace of mind and will no doubt appeal to a lot of folks.

      Cheers Pat.

Sounds like GAP Insurance taken one step further.

Still, they're just selling yet another form of insurance.

    -juice
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
But they are not asking for an extra premium and it does not involve your insurance company, so this would be an added incentive to a prospective buyer.

      Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They've gotta build it in to the price.

I guess it's not very likely to happen, so it may not amount to a big risk.

some dealers sell if you don't use your extended service agreement - they reimburse you the cost. We (SOA) do not offer it. It is illegal in a lot of States (they regulate anything 'eh?). Also, they make it virtually impossible to collect. One example/one company - say you have a 7 yr., 60K agreement. You have to wait the 7 years - it doesn't matter when you reach 60K. Then you have to prove you never used it - and proof means that the issuer of the agreement has to sign a bunch of waivers, you have to still own the car, etc. I've seen a few customer's get burned by them and they charge a lot for that "coverage" - even though it's usually built into other charges. Just beware - read the fine print, please! Pat - I know you would check it out fully - this is really just sharing.

For one thing, I said earlier that it wouldn't be free and two there is no prospect of me buying a Nissan ever:-)

WhatI am saying though, is that it will appeal to some folks especially those who are truly scrambling to finance a new car.

However I know what you are saying Patti, I am a very strong advocate of reading the fine print in anything, also I am not a big fan of extended Warranties, aside from Subaru's well documented head gasket failures I believe that all modern cars should go at least 100,000 relatively trouble free miles.

If you want peace of mind take the cost of the extended warranty and invest it wisely, if you do not use it you will have made money on your investment, and if you have a big ticket repair chances are what you have in your investment will cover it.

WE toss a $100 a month into a car account for maintainance and repairs, and we start that from the first week we own the car.

      Cheers Pat.

Most if not all dealers here have found another creative way to make a few hundred more dollars on a car sale.

They have introduced administration fees, what this is, is basically charging a fee for the paperwork and it can amount to several hundred dollars, for me this is a deal breaker, if see admin. fees I will walk, to me this is pure scam.

Anything like this in the States?

      Cheers Pat.
  • dcm61dcm61 Member Posts: 1,567
They're usually called document fees. I think most dealers charge some type of fees, either hidden or disclosed. The amount varies widely.

Why not just be honest and say I need to make X amount of profit?

Just think - if you have few problems, you could end up a rich man one day!!

I do believe in manufacturer backed extended service agreements, though. With Added Security, I'm involved in the claims process and see the claims we pay. I'm sure there are folks that are glad they bought one. Also, it does go far towards re-sale of the vehicle. Since you can do much better selling your own car vs. trading it in, it offers a measure of confidence to the buyer as well as the seller. You don't have to worry about the purchaser coming back at you if a problem does crop up.

I think I'm going to take your idea, but for household problems. For the past month, it seems that everything here is falling apart. From our heater/AC blower, our oven, toaster, dryer, etc. These are relatively new things since our fire, yet they are all breaking. I'm going to call some 800 #'s!!
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
I didn't expect to use my Subaru Added Security warranty, but I am glad to have it. With it, I have had no problems with the dealer getting work done. A good investment in my opinion.

Warranties are defintely a good idea for owners who do a lot of miles, I don't put a lot of miles on any more so It does not make sense for me to have one, plus I keep my cars for a long time so there would be no incentive as far as selling goes either.

      Cheers Pat.

Don't forget the roadside assistance. My dad just renewed his after 3 years, and it's costing him $71 per year. That could have gone towards paying for the Subaru Gold.

Although with Subaru you're limited to towing to the nearest dealer. I didn't use it when my WRX was stolen due to this reason.

The nearest dealer to the recovery location has had a few WRX's stolen from their lot.

Patti - How about getting it changed to "the dealer of your choice within 100 miles"? Please submit that. Thank you. :-)

In Ottawa thet want over $2000 for the extended warranty and it was take it or leave it at that price.

      Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Someone got a 5/100 for $895 recently, an Outback owner paid even less for a 7/70 a while back.

If you want the roadside assistance anyway, it's only a couple hundred more than that.

juice, Canadian dealers are still not as willing to deal as their US counterparts, in order to get the invoice price you have to pay a fee to various outfits, it not generally made available here.

Buying a car here can still be very much an adversarial marathon, same with the extended warranty, it is usally non negotiable.

       Cheers Pat.

The fall that broke 4 ribs two weeks ago lead to internal bleeding and a partially collapsed lung. They finally got him stabilized to the point of letting him out. Fortunately, the retirement community that my folks live in has a full time nurse on duty, so he has to report in 1-2 times per day to be checked for the next week, to make sure he stays OK.

    Glad he's improving.

Heads up - I got an offer in the mail, test drive any new Subie and get a $25 Home Depot Gift Card. Better yet, buy one and get a $300 Gift Card!

It was valid March 1 to end of April, you think the 2005s will be in dealers by then? :-)

It was the first trip over 2 hours in the XT (5.5 to 6). My biggest complaint is the seats. I had a little bit of an achy back each way, and it was hard for my wife to get comfortable for a snooze.
With any luck, the FSTi seats will make it here at a "reasonable" price. :-)

The first two tanks of fuel (NJ to start then two in PA), I got 22 and 22.5. That's with speeds of about 75 and a maybe a "little" higher. I think the last tank will be better because I'm still going with 330 miles on that tank.

Saw a guy in a shopping center parking lot with a silver STi and went to check it out. Turns out he's also on nabisco.
Saw a car carrier with new Forester's heading West on the PA Turnpike. And, to my surprise, I spotted a car carrier with '04 Outbacks heading east. I guess they were from the last production run.

Also saw an RS6 as he cruised past me. Sweet car! I wanted to catch up for a closer look, but didn't want to wake the wifey on the curves.

Noticed a big difference in shifting in the hills compared to the WRX. It was like I had an auto. :-) I don't think I downshifted once. I would occasionally downshift with the Rex on this drive. Hello torque.

    -Dennis

p.s. Steve, glad your dad is better
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Sounds good Dennis. Your seat comment surprises me a little, maybe the WRX seats spoiled you.

With the new Legacy beating the RS6 in one review, you get pretty excited to try one out, eh?
