I'm sure it's been an ordeal, but really glad to hear the positive news. I'll be praying for you and your family.

Glad to hear the good prognosis. Wish her all the best, and you and the rest of your family just hang in there. Know you are in our thoughts for a speedy, healthy recovery.

Sloan-Kettering is top notch. Beth's probably in the best hands possible.

As always, thanks for the support and well wishes. The last few months have been really crummy, but I think we are seeing the clouds beginning to break up.
Steve
I wasn't kidding about the team! 6 people descended on the room with duct tape, saran wrap, and sheet plastic, along with the lead box itself. Basically it goes like this: I-131 is a beta emitter (high energy electron ejected from the nucleus). Once the electron strikes something, it is spent, and the iodine becomes xenon. End of hazard. The problem is that sweat, etc., can carry still active iodine, that when left on a surface, could present a low level hazard to the next occupant of the room. Half life is 8.4 days, so it is used up pretty quickly, and any personal items she touches will simply be put aside for a month. But the hospital will want that room put to use tomorrow, so the more that is covered in disposable plastic, the less that will have to be scrubbed down.

Steve - Good luck!! We'll definitely keep her in our thoughts and prayers.

Have a well deserved summer, Brenda. Hope your mom does better (don't they have any good doctors there! j/k)
BTW, have you ever read a book called "There are no shortcuts" by Raffe Esquith. It's a very interesting book for teachers and parents alike!

Cheers Pat.
One minute.... that is all you get....
Hope she is doing better, and that you can enjoy this summer.

How is Susan doing? I know you guys have had a rough year as well.

Now I am way out of my league here in terms of interpreting this, having not renewed my X-ray workers certification in quite a few years. We have two systems in the lab, and are required to do a leakage survey periodically (hence the counters). The receiving tube is tuned for X-rays, so it may not be quite accurate for beta particles. But it turns out that I-131 is a Gamma emitter as well as beta, and Gamma is just a fancy term for X-ray, so the counts bear some relationship to reality. That being the case, she is still something like 50x above the standard industry radiation alert level (according to one reference). You know, the point where they grab you, drag you to the showers, and scrub you down with a wire brush......
Waving the wand around the car, I was able to verify that Beth does indeed use her seat belt, and holds the wheel at the 10 and 2 o'clock position!!! Scary, no??
Steve
Glad to hear that Beth is out and hope the thyroid treatment goes okay. Its obligatory to take the mickey out of your wife on such occassions. Judy tore a cartilage some years ago, disco dancing with our three year old son. Now she has torn it again, racing the dog through the house. I restrained myself from laughing too hard but the doctor counldn't.
Cheers

a quick recap .. first time to hospital mom had fluid in her chest cavity pressing lung up causing difficulty in breathing ... drained fluid, performed numerous tests and found ... 'nothing' ... possibly a virus ... next trip to hosp .. more fluid on both sides of the chest cavity and a very rapid and not so stable heartbeat .. more tests .. more draining ... possibly a virus (still) or an auto-immune disorder ... this trip to hospital .. no fluid in chest, but very rapid heartbeat (at 160 per min or so) and was put in cardiac care unit - basically cardiac intensive care .. as of last night her heartbeat was stabilized and they had put her in a 'regular' room ..
it is likely that we will have to make the trip to houston in the near future ...

Gives new meaning to the term, "Man, is my wife is hot!"

Hey, I feel for you. Very much so. This reality stuff blows.... big time.
On top of the stuff with Beth, Emily (9 yrs old) is acting out in all sorts of ways. Most likely stress related. Meetings with teacher and school shrink. I am now taking her to a psychologist. And the two year old asks 10 times a day "when mommy coming home?". My mother-in-law is up from Virginia and is an incredible help, but at 80, she needs down time as well. And I am trying to give my boss a fair return at the same time. Oh well, could always be worse.... Life will return to some semblance of normal in a week or so. In the mean time I am trying to keep my sense of humor.
All of you are a big help with that last bit.
Steve

LOL. That's a good one Steve!
Brenda - I'll add you & your mom to my prayer list. Trusting things will get better.

Bob, good question re Cap City; I believe it's the downtown one, but I'll ask Susan which one we went to last year...do you have any preference?
The purpose was to introduce the new 3-series. Incredible technology, 255 hp, and an excellent handling car, especially compared to the Infiniti G35 and Audi A4 3.2 Quattro we drove for comparison. All cars had the sport packages, and the Bimmer was a 330i. First, the active steering...this really works well; it adjusts the steering ratios as you drive and on that course, you could really see and feel the difference, especially compared to the Audi, which handled like a pig. If you needed 3/4to a full turn in the Audi, the Bimmer would do it in less than 1/2 turn of the wheel; cleaner lines, less roll, and very noticeable when your drive is over; no smell of burning rubber with the Bimmer. With the Audi, it smelled like a pile of burning tires. The G35, handled much better than the Audi but not as well as the 330i.
All cars were very comfortable, nicely laid out interiors, and excellent grab handles! (necessary for use with one of the drivers in my group; he kept going into one of the turns too hot and losing it, doing a 270 at one point; turns out he drives a Maserati coupe...makes you wonder). Great power delivery on all the cars, though at times, the Audi seemed to lag behind when coming back on power after rolling thru some turns. I'll tell you, I was impressed with the BMW. Afterwards, one of the instructors was kind enough to give Michael a ride at full speed thru the course, explaing his steering, acceleration, and braking at each point on the course.
Before the autocross, Michael and I had a chance to drive 3 other Bimmers as part of the Susan G. Komen Foundation thing that BMW does every year; for each mile you drive, BMW donates $1 to the foundation. They give you an 8.8 mile course thru the streets of Sunrise FL and you are on your own. Car#1 was a 530i; lovely car and a 6-speed steptronic which was smooth and fun (think sequential)..why bother with a manual, I was wondering. Car#2 was a fire-engine red Z4 3.0i, also with a steptronic (5-speed). Now that was fun...the wind thru my thinning hair, etc.
Car #3 was an X3 3.0i with 5-speed steptronic; you can feel every little bump in the road, lots of body roll.
We had a good time and earned some money for a good cause. There were also delicious fudge brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and drinks, as well as a Bridgestone baseball cap for each participant.
Till next time from the land of the flat...
Serge

Wed night is perfect - we have a sitter lined up every Wed for our "date night" so I'll drag the wife along (kicking and screaming). I'll promise her we'll limit the car talk to half the evening so she may grudgingly agree to join us.
Can you e-mail me info about that BMW event? I wonder if they have one in DC.
Brenda: nice to have you back, hope your mom improves soon.

I've been to the one in Downtown, it's fun. It's across the street from the old convention center. Bob - wanna drive in together? I'm probably on the way for you.
Checked on the BMW thing and they have nothing in DC, bummer.
