    and isn't bob GLAD!

I would think poor Bob would feel like a pincushion at this point with all the 'needling' you guys give him (especially swampy!) ...

    Hey Bob congrats!

Brenda- Did you notice that even Karen couldn't resist a little needling in her write-up? :) But hey, look at it this way, we only tease the people we like :P

And I didn't want to pick on Bob...honest! Well..maybe just a little...and I thought it was a very cute helmet.

    Btw, new topic now open:

    Subaru Forester 2006+

    Happy 4th everyone!

yeah I did notice that ... and I agree with you that we really only tease the people we like and are comfortable with ...
I think I'm a bit more conscious of some of it since we have to be so on guard at school about kids teasing one another ... (teacher habits are hard to break even in the summer!)

Hi Mark, you know sometimes it seems if you didn't have bad luck you would have no luck at all. I am sure you are glad to well away from that weekend.

    Cheers Pat.

Cool Bob. I wouldn't pick on you, not half I wouldn't I am just too late.

    Cheers Pat.

Good to see you Pat .. I just asked last night in the chat if anyone had heard from you and how Anne-Marie is doing ... everyone assumed you were at the lake for the summer ...

Thanks, all of you, for your kind words. It truly was the best week of my life and my partner and I have already registered for next year's event -- all of us are still on our high!

Mark, the hills were relentless, but not as bad as we expected. We trained on hills much steeper, not really knowing what we were in for, and I think it paid off for us. The major hills (the ones that had earned names because they were considered to be the worst of them) really were no longer or steeper than anything we had already encountered.

What was most surprising to me was that our bodies actually got stronger over the course of the week -- the opposite of what I expected to happen. I assumed we would be exhausted by day 6 or 7, but we felt great. Hills that would have slowed us down significantly early in the ride were taken in higher gears and at a higher cadence by the end of the week. The only real trouble spots for us were our butts...there's just no comfortable way to spend a week sitting on a bike seat!

    Take care, all!

As Bob said previously, it was fantastic to finally meet one of the crew; we shared some beer and fine burgers at Capitol City, as well as wonderful conversation. The time was short, alas, but we hope to definitely get together with you guys. Being up north made us realize how much we missed it...as Susan put it as we crossed the GW Bridge into Manhattan, "Michael, we're home again".
We had a great time, and saw "The Producers" on Broadway; a wonderful musical, and Michael's first Bway show.
    Here are the Bob photos:

In this one, we must have bored him, as he looks like he fell asleep in the middle of the shot

Taken by Bob...you can really see how Michael is a good mixture of the 2 of us

I also managed to photoshop the helmet off of Bob's head in the photos...isn't technology wonderful?

Yes, I must have dozed off in that first shot. :) Yes, good fun. It's a shame we all live so far apart.

I'm off to Wilmington, NC in the morning. Moving our daughter into an apartment there with a couple of her girlfriends. Rented a Ford E-250 cargo van, and got it mostly packed. Will finish up in the am, and then head out.

She is about to start her first job in her new career as an RN. She will be working in the Pulmonary Ward in the main hospital there. Three days a week, but 12-hour night shifts. Then in a year, she'll come back to go to grad school. Do you think we're proud parents? You bet we are!

Brenda thanks for asking, Anne Marie just left us today to go back home she came up for a week to visit, She is off now to go pay her annual visit to the vietnam wall in DC. She is coming along she will get the results of some tests they did just before she came up.

These will determine if they are going to remove her gallbladder or not.

    Cheers Pat.

Yep Rob we are enjoying the summer, lots of Rand R. Just had a short visit from our daughter it was good to see her. She has gained back some weight and is looking much better.

A few hundred thousand pounds of thrust, I would guess? Should make you a winner in the stoplight wars.

Looks too small for a main launch engine, Shuttle OMS engine, maybe?

    Got your note.... Thanks!

The trip went well. I put about 900 miles on the '05 E-250 cargo van. It's a pretty nice truck, for what it is. Wouldn't want to own one though. Got our daughter moved in, and then spent a day at the beach. She's a block from the ocean. The water was like bathwater, veeeery nice... :)

Humorous sidelight: Saw a Toyota Prius pulled over for speeding on I-95.

Stupid sidelight: While driving on 295, through Washington on the way home, there were 3 bikers in front of us on crotch rockets. One of them stood up on the pegs and then lifted the front wheel about 45 degrees, and drove that way for about a 1/4 mile! What an idiot... :(

Bummer, I sprained my ankle while playing soccer with the kids this weekend. Ended up in the ER to get x-rays, but turns out it was the ligaments (which isn't necessarily any better).

So I have a soft cast and can't drive, which is pretty frustrating. Crutches to walk, too. 2-4 days with my ankle elevated, and 6 weeks for a full recovery.

Guess I should have been doing something safer like doing a wheelie on a speed bike for a quarter mile. ;-)

Bummer juice. Heal quickly. :) I've had several severely sprained ankles in the past. It's very painful and no fun for sure.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
How long before you were driving?

    -juice
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Oh gosh... it's been 30+ years. From what I remember, I was always driving, but walking with a limp for quite some time. I think it took months to fully heal. I injured it playing vollyball. I was jumping and came down on the side of someone's foot. The pain was terrible when it happened.

Which ankle did you sprain, and why is it keeping you from driving?

    Bob
  • njswamplandsnjswamplands Member Posts: 1,760
10 days. the rest of the time it is just very annoying
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
    Juice-

Sorry to hear about the sprain. Since you say you can't drive, I assume it is the right ankle. Thankfully your wife drives.

That is my biggest fear- doing something that results in my not being able to drive. Considering I'm the only one in my family that drives, I'd be stuck.

    Hope you feel better soon!

ya cant cheat with your left foot in manual world
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yup, but the pain is manageable, it's just stiff and I don't have a full range of motion. I can walk with a severe limp, but I wouldn't feel safe driving a clutch right now.

The hard part is I'm hyper-active and can't stay still, so it's hard to lay down and elevate the ankle.

reminds me of the time I sprained my ankle at school ... one of the first years I taught ... was racing on the playground with the kids when I went around an oak tree and slid on the acorns ... landed with my dress down (thankfully!) ... but it was rather embarrassing when I got inside .. almost passed out and had to send one of the kids for the nurse .. and then explain what happened when I wasn't really supposed to have the kids outside in the first place! .... long story ...
  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092
My ankle sprain injury is just as embarrassing. A few years ago, I decided I wasn't too old to skateboard. Well..the spirit was willing, but the body wasn't. I was on crutches for a month.

Hope you're feeling better soon, juice!

Bob, you have every right to be proud of your daughter. Nursing school is no picnic and even though the pay is good, it's a tough job. Being close to the beach should give her some nice down time on her days off. Sounds like your daughter needs a Forester ;) to explore NC and of course to come home and see the family.

My wife is an RN who also works three 12 hour shifts per week and is working on her Masters. Only a couple of more semesters to go and she will be finished.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Well, she's got an '04 CRV. Tried to convince of a Forester, and almost succeeded, but she loved the CRV—and she's got to live with it. So far it's been a good decision.

She will go back to school next year, at least that's game plan now, hopefully at the U of MD again. She wants to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Man... don't remind me. Ripped ligaments on left ankle playing basketball years ago, and almost did it to my right. Now I wear ankle braces when playing sports. I know the feeling all too well.

Sorry to hear about your ankle but before you know it, you'll be back on your feet again. Just don't try to be a hero and stay well rested; you'll heal faster.

    Good luck buddy!

Several years ago, I tore an outer ligament on my left ankle slipping on a step. I think the general thought is that you'd be better off breaking a bone than tearing a ligament. Ligaments can take a while to *fully* heal. It took more than a few months to regain full motion of my ankle, even with daily exercises for it.

I found warm soaks helped loosen things. Give it time, try not to force it.

I too have been off the boards for a while. Susan and I drove the Legacy wagon to Beuna Vista Colorado on the 25th of June and just returned today. What a great touring car! I reset the B trip odometer and at the end of the vacation today I had logged 3750 miles and the average mpg was exactly 30. Not too bad with the price of gas. Actually the price of gas was not too bad. I made sure to fill the car up in Colorado Springs any day we got near there. Gas was only $2.01 there. I used the A odometer to check each tank. On fillup was in Fairplay CO at almost 10,000 ft altittude.(at $2.29 it was the most expensive tank of gas I bought) We drove Canon City which is about 6000 ft. Talk about cheating the mileage with the force of gravity. When we got there the average read nearly 40 mpg. We did a lot of rockhounding and I came back with 100+ pounds of rocks. Drove on a lot of dirt roads and had a very dirty car most of the time. The engine did well at high altitude. Yes it is not as powerful at that height and my WRX performed better last year. But if you keep the RPMs up you can do OK. That is where the sportshift came in. In over 20 years of visiting Colorado, Wyoming and Montana this is the first time I was not driving a manual shift. Sport shift does pretty well in the mountains. I wish I had the 5 speed one though. Second gear is too high to be as effective on descents as second usually is on a manual. You can downshift at 60 mph with it and I found myself doing that often (Monarch Pass. Hoosier Pass. Need I say more for anyone who has driven those passes?) We overpacked as always and then Susan bought one of those chainsaw carved bears and I had bags of rocks scattered all through the car but we got it all home. Like last year's trip out west Colorado is the land of Subarus. Talk about hitting the target audience out there. Buena Vista on the Arkansas River is a prime destination for whitewater rafters and kayakers. There are so many Outbacks there it is unreal. Many have either kayaks or bikes on top.The whole area looks like one big Subaru promo. As I noticed last year the other popular car is the Legacy in the first generation before the Outback arrived. WRX wagons (also loaded with boats and bikes are quite popular). In fact I saw as many of those as Foresters. And yes the XT for the thin mountain air is selling out there, especially the Outback XT. It's funny, few SUVs I saw out there were carrying bikes or boats but the majority of the OB's were.

Anyway we did not go rafting but we did:
1.Get to about a half dozen abandonded mine sites and collect granite, pyrite, rose quartz and other nice rocks.
    2. Ride the Royal Gorge dinner train. Expensive but the most incredible view of the 1000 ft deep gorge.
    3. Try to get to the top of Mt. Antero. The jeep tour we took could not get to the top of the 14,000 ft tall mountain because of snow. Susan and I were planning on prospecting for Aquamarine. Antero is known for its gem quality Aquamarine and other Beryl gemstones. But it was a nice trip to the 12,000 ft. level of the mountain.
    4. Get to meet wolves up close at the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center.
    5. Cross every high mountain pass we could: Poncha, Hoosier, Monarch, Wilkerson, Cottonwood, and Marshall.

All in all a great time.

There was a snow saddle area on the trail up Antero at about 12,000 ft. It was too unstable and deep to drive the jeep through. The jeep had about a foot of ground clearance and had plenty of power. The owner had swapped a vette V8 into it.

I hope that none of the Crew that are world travelers were in the area of the London attacks this morning. Hope everyone is safe and sound.

I guess this was a reminder of what goes on in the world, unfortunately.
