    Cool story, Serge.

I came when I was 3, with my dad on a work visa.

They put me in Day Care and told me to say "Home" if I got tired or scared and wanted to go home.

Naturally, I forgot the word, and just belted out the loudest cry I could fester up.

Sure enough, mom showed up and that was my last day being institutionalized until Kindergarden 2 years later.

Not sure how to link that to Thanksgiving, except to wish the Crew a happy one. I'm quite fortunate, it's been a great year for me, so I know I have a lot to be thankful for.

    Cool story as well juice.

My parents arrived in the US in October 1963 from Brazil as well. My Dad's aunt took them in and they had jobs and a place to live within a couple of weeks. Then came Thanksgiving and they still remember that first one because they were getting paid to stay home. Of course they had turkey but also had fijuada and bacala as well!!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Yum!

Feijoada = a black bean stew, popular in the northeast of Brazil, where I am from.

Bacalhau = salty cod in olive oil, a dish from Portugal that's popular along the coast of Brazil.

All you need is a Churrasco from the south/southeast and you've got Brazilian cuisine in a nutshell!
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
    Thanks for correcting my spelling.

Bacalhau is great. My Mom bakes it with potatoes, olive oil, chick peas and onions. Serve it as the main dish with a palmito salad and it's heaven!!

WHERE ARE THE CAPIRINHAS????? I'M THIRSTY

Although very tasty, I wouldn't drink them if I were thirsty. That's a guaranteed ride to hang-overville!!

Whether you've just arrived, decend from the colonists, or your ancestors have been here thousands of years (and everyone else who falls somewhere in between), we all have a lot to be thankful for. America is a land of plenty, and even more importantly, is a land of constant opportunity even if you haven't had the fortune to experience the "plenty" yet.

For a little perspective, punch your annual income into the Global Rich List calculator to see how you compare with the rest of the world.

Let's all remember to share our bounty with others this Thanksgiving. Best wishes to the whole Crew.

    Great stories ...

According to one of our family historians who has researched these things ... my family was in a wave before the Revolutionary War and mostly from Ireland. I know when I left Texas in 2000, my family was ready to disown me since I was descended from at least six generations of Texans on each side!

Happy turkey day to you all!

My mother and grandmother emmigrated in 1947. My grandfather had been killed trying to repair a detonator on a bridge over which a german column was advancing early in the war. I guess my grandmother didn't see much of a future in post-war France; she married an MP assigned to her village in '47 and was shipped to NY, not speaking any english and more or less utterly alone. He was an Armenian from Boston (his family moved to the US after fleeing the Turkish genocide), and he was the only one who spoke English. No one in his family, including him, spoke French. I can't imagine what that must have been like, especially for my then-7-year-old mother. Anyhoo, grandmother turned 99 this month, and we're all doing fine :shades:

Suffice to say, we all have much to be thankful for, and we all would do well to pause a moment and remember how much despair and suffering there is worldwide this morning....and then give everyone you love a hug.

Wishing all the best to your and yours from me and mine! Take it easy on the turkey or tofu or whatever it is you may choose to dish up today! Then ease back for that first long winter's nap :P

Dub Schwartz is in the spirit of things too...and has picked his Turkey of the Year

Might as well get everyone interested in the 7th Annual 48hrs of Tristate Subaru Drive. Last year we raised over $6,000 for the ACS during our 3 day drive through NY/NJ/PA.

Happy thanksgiving to all the crew members In the US. Being an immigrant myself the immigrant stories are of particular interest.

    Cheers Pat.

    G'day

I can add an odder story of my ancestors' American adventures. A lot of my forbears were miners from Cornwall and seem to have travelled easily between England, America and ultimately Australian and New Zealand, pursuing their fortune in hard rock mining through the Nineteenth Century. They appear to have left only minor makrs on history.

However, my nine greats grandfather had a rather more direct impact on American history.. He was John Colyn Jope, (somitemes written as CHOP) a Cornish minister of religion and owner/skipper of the White Lion which he operated as a Privateer from 1618. On 15 July 1619, this and another vessel, the Treasurer, seized the cargo of the Portugese vessel, Bautista which included about 60 slaves. The White Lion, under Jope's command, was trading from the Dutch port of Vlissingen and quickly traded their portion of the cargo, including more than 20 slaves, to the settlers at Jamestown, Virginia. The legal niceties are gloriously confused but well documented in the records of subsequent court action against the Treasurer and in the surviving records of the Virginian Company.

The Melungeans claim their ancestry to descend, in part, from this group of involuntary immigrants. Whilst Jope's actions are not something to be proud of, it raises interesting questions as to how an infant colony was modified by his opportunist action.

Now we could not get further off topic than that, could we?

    Cheers

Same here Graham! My grandparents and great grandparents on my mothers side were also miners from Cornwall! When the mining industry collapsed over there in the late 1800s they came to America and settled in the upper peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin to become "Youppers," which is the name given to residents of that area. They lived in Ironwood, MI, and Hurley, WI; which is on the Michigan and Wisconsin border, and were miners in the iron-ore mines.

Hey, maybe we're related! Their last name was Stevens.

    Great story as usual, Graham.
To add a couple of interesting addendums to my story, as I had previously mentioned, we had a very large apartment in Paris and my father's tailoring workshop was on the third floor. My father told me that one day, I went up to the shop and took a sewing machine apart; I then proceeded to put it back together again and it worked just fine! He said I was around 3 years old when this occurred.
As for the apartment, it had a large storage room. This was the room I feared the most because I thought that this was where G-d lived! I could never get the courage to open that door.

    G'day

I love those Parisian apartments. The buildings close to the centre of Paris (the lowest numbered arrondisements) often contain very graceful grand apartments, foreign to Americans or Australians -unless they have lived in a New York Brownstone. The interiors are exquisite with finely detailed woodwork and exquisite furnishings.

I found myself at the end of a lovely luncheon about fifteen years ago, overlooking the Arc d'Triomphe from such a lovely spot. The interior was gracefully Parisian, the company excellent and the wines more so. It made the subsequent transit of the Boulevard Périphérique in a Renault 25, an extraordinary experience without seatbelts, to visit Renault at Boulogne-Billancourt seem peculiarly frightening. Stranger still was my insistence upon a French interpreter, who proved useless, given the immaculate English of the Renault negotiator. "Non" is readily translatable, even to a naive Australian.

    Cheers

Not sure what to make of this, but I'd be doubtful if they have much credibility when issuing tickets.

Graham's tax dollars at work. :D

To goof around is one thing, but to put it on tape and then share it with the world?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Perhaps it was some kind of exposition? I've seen demonstrations by Police a lot that may end up on tape un-edited. Before I judge em as being a waste of tax $ I'd want to know more details.

    Hey folks,

I believe that Mike already mentioned this, but this coming Feb 1 -3 we are holding our 7th Annual 48hrs Subaru Charity Drive. This year it is starting out at SOA headquarters in Cherry Hill, NJ, then heading up to Cooperstown, then Lake George, and ending in Newburgh, NY. It is a lot of fun ( I've done every one of these since its start) and we also help out a good cause along the way, the American Cancer Society. Last year we raised $6000, this year we are aiming for $7K!

It's a fun weekend of driving through all types of road conditions (Pine Barrens, highways, back roads) with fellow Subaru lovers in all models (WRX, Forester, Legacy GT, Outback, and Baja) driving for fun and companionship. I've met some really nice folks on this drive and encourage any one in the area who can, to join up. It's only 800 miles this year, so we even cut back on the number of miles driven :D . The website with the info is: link title

Haven't heard from Bob about Deb in awhile ... anything new? .. I do think about you guys a LOT !
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Deb had her first of six chemo treatments on Friday. So far the side effects aren't too bad. She's very tired, and has very little energy, and she feels a bit weird, but thankfully not nauseous (yet). She's scheduled every 3 weeks for treatment, and yes, she will lose her hair. We're just taking each day one at a time...

    Thanks for asking. :)

    Heads up!

We're doing our $120,000 wish list, over here:

tsy, "Subaru Crew Cafe" #12929, 10 Dec 2007 1:04 pm

I guess it went up to $120k to account for inflation. We've been at 100k for several years.

Follow the link, tell us how you would spend it!

Are you all following Robin Roberts' story, the Good Morning America anchor? I find her quite inspirational in her openness and honesty and forthrightness with her own fight.

All the best to you and Deb.

Not directly Pat, although we're aware of her situation. Last week was bit tough, but this week is better. Thanks for the kind words.

Tomorrow she picks up her "cranial prosthesis" (a.k.a. cancer wig), as she will be losing her hair soon—which should be a lot of fun...

Try to look on the bright side - she can try going blonde...or even red.

(sorry, I always try to look on the bright side...)
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Well, let's hope it looks better than that red wig now being touted in that new Wendy's TV commercials.

Michael and I will be up in the NY area from 12/25 - 1/4...I was thinking lunch or dinner at Saigon Grill on University Place in the Village...any takers?

Michael WILL be a college student. So far, he has been accepted into UMass Lowell's Sound Recording & Technology program and Columbia College Chicago's Audio/Sonics/Music program. He is waiting to hear from Florida State, Berklee College of Music, and Indiana U Jacobs School of Music Audio Recording programs.
We are accepting donations as we will be poor starting in September! (LOL)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all in the crew!!

Congratulations on your son's acceptance to college. My daughter also has been accepted to Indiana along with Penn State, UCONN, and Rutgers. We're waiting on others too.

I'm not looking forward to September either, but as proud parents we're to happy to write the check.

Perhaps we can help start a Subaru scholarship fund? Organize a fund raiser with Subaru, regional colleges, Insurance companies and municipalities to promote driving safety? Does something like this already exist?

I was born and raised in Manhattan. Spent most of my Saturday mornings in the Jr, bowling league at Bowlmor Lanes on University Place. It's a great part of town. I plan to be in NYC next week as well although I don't yet know which day. When do you plan to be in the village?

Best wishes to everyone for a happy new year!!!
  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
I was born in Paris, but grew up in Washington Heights at the other end of Manhattan.

I'm not sure which day yet...possible Friday or Saturday...Michael and I are on flexible schedules, so if you post here, I will check. I have my brother's computer available to me. Anyone else in? Great food

    Absoultely... Merry Christmas to all!

And congratulations on the kids getting accepted at college.

As a Penn State alum living in Happy Valley, married to a Penn State alum, with one kid at PSU as a freshman, and another looking forward to attending PSU, I MIGHT have a recommendation about which school your daughter might want to consider :shades:

3 weeks ago my daughter received her acceptance packet from Penn State and I received the license plates for my new lease.

The first three characters of my plate are WER.

Coincidence or are there other powers at work?
