SX4 has a tiny 11-gal tank for a 300-mile range, compared to 450 miles for Impreza. You'd make 33% fewer stops at the gas station w/the Subie.

Those of us who drink lots of coffee & take diuretics for blood pressure are probably OK with more frequent stops :)

    Cheers!

Pregnant women, too. When my wife was preggers we had to stop a lot more often.

Nowadays we can make the 2.5 hour trip to the beach without stopping.

Those must be the times you leave the kids at home?!?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
No, I drive at night. We leave around 8pm or so, basically close to their bed time. They catch a movie on the 12" screen with their headsets (so I have my music), and when that ends it's lights out.

Very peaceful drive for me. :shades:

Not that it matters much, but I will be scarce for the next few months as spring finally (eventually?) arrives and outdoor activities pick up. I also accepted a new job today so I will be exceptionally busy with that and sunset activities with my current jobs. I think that all told, I should wake up some time in October.

Happy trails in the meantime, folks!

Best wishes to your mother, Brenda. Seems to me that she is missing the island for the ocean - she is still alive, and she is recovering. There is a light at the end of her tunnel. I also understand your dad's comments; I am guilty of making similar remarks myself. Discreetly remind him that the difference between his wife and money is that if he loses the latter, he can always get it back. ;)

Oh yeah I drive in NJ where there is a gas station on every corner so filling up isn't an issue.

Just saw the Pope go by. Had a nice view from my window, he drove on Pennsylvania Ave right out front. :shades:

More precisely, I should say I saw the Pope-mobile. Looked like a Benz ML-based one-off of some sort. Of course I'm up on the 10th floor so it's hard to say for sure.

Note this is not the one he was in, this was a newer model ML, from what I could see.

Hmm - interesting. According to a number of sources, there's no single popemobile. Typically during a papal visit, a domestically built popemobile is supplied for the duration. When JPII visited England, Land Rover supplied one and when he visited Canada, GMC supplied a modified Sierra which was also used when he visited Cuba.

The MB is the one used at the Vatican as well as a Fiat or two and VW presented B16 with a modified Phaeton limousine in 2006.

It's hard enough to even get a glance when he's crawling along very slowly, imagine in a Ferrari!

    Brenda,

With all that's been happening lately, you can vent a bit here; it's perfectly understandable to fell bummed. One thing I learned from my folks when they were around and in the hospital - complaining means they're on the mend usually.

    Hope things get better.

Wes - good luck with the job and the hours.

Well there's goes my theory of host country supplied popemobiles.

Every picture and video I've seen has him in a modifed ML.

As for a Ferrari, since the car typically crawls along at 10 mph it would be overkill IMHO.

why do some states have laws saying you can't have anything stuck on the windshield? is it really a safety issue or just a round about way to make eg radar detectors illegal?
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Safety issue - they don't anything to obstruct your vision of the road.

IIRC, here in MA it's illegal to have anything hanging from the rearview mirror or any decals on the windshield other than your state inspection as well as it impedes your forward vision.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They adhere very well, at least the Garmin ones do. Mine only fell off a couple of times in direct sunlight on a 100 degree day, with the windows closed. I'm sure interior temps were way up there.

Garmin supplies a black metal disc that you can stick on to any flat surface. I used that for a while on our minivan. That never fell off, even on super hot days.

Still, I wanted to bring it closer to me, so I purchased a vent mount for next to nothing. It blocks the vent slightly, but it's worth it because it's very easy to reach and easiliy visible, given it's much closer that it would be up on the windshield.

I doubt that will ever fall, either.

    G'day

Okay, I am home today and intend to make the Chat. However, the last few times I have tried, I have had not luck. What settings are likely to be blocking me from accessing Chat. I am using Zone Alarm on a Windows XP machine. Any great ideas?

    Cheers

Other problem is reliability. The Ferrari would likely break during a procession! :)

Bummer - a few of us were able to get in.

Hey Paul, the ACL was fixed yesterday and went well. Still can't convince her to switch to a snowboard though. :)

Could the firewall be blocking Edmunds' IP?
Or the firewall security set too high that the port which the chatroom would use is closed.
In the case of my router that has its own firewall, I would not be able to use IM if it is set at Medium or High security without further customization.

I dont think I've changed any settings since the last time I was able to access chat... guess I should have tried the laptop too.

Steve: Glad to hear the surgery went well. My middle kiddo broke his pinky on his dominant hand Wednesday. Glad it wasn't during ski season, but it wrecked his spring baseball season. We see the orthopedic group this afternoon.

How was the trip to UMASS-Lowell? Rob M.
  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
The trip was very good. We stayed at the Doubletree downtown which was very nice..great view of the canals and gates..very interesting, though we didn't get a chance to tour the mills...next trip. We did a tour of the campuses on Thursday; the program is well structured, starting with analog 2-track recording, and working up to the seniors studio where they have a one-of-a-kind 48-track board as well as a new 2-inch analog tape recorder.

Friday morning, Mike had his audition, placement exam in Calculus, and a music theory exam. We got the audition results Wednesday and he passed, so he is now officially accepted into the SRT program. He had to play his prepared pieces (Ave Maria, a jazz version of Easter Parade, and chords and scales of various sorts. Then, the professor threw him a curve...play part of Easter Parade at a different signature and beat...he was nervous that he might have fumbled thru that, but all turned out well. The weather was very good most of the weekend,60s on Friday,

We ended up eating at the cafeteria a couple of times...the food was really good. When Michael had a piece of their chocolate cake, he said "this is were I'm going!".
We did some shopping in Nashua; I got myself some tie-dye Converse All-Stars low tops...really cool. Then on Saturday, we had time to go to the Kennedy Library...we all really enjoyed that. By the time we got home to Florida, it was 2:30 AM Sunday morning.Still a bit tired, plus I picked up a bug on the plane.
We will be back up before school starts in September; it looks like this is his #1 choice. He has orientation in June. Hopefully, we will be able to get together

Guys, would it be possible to keep an eye out for a used wagon for Michael, maybe in the local papers or used car dealers. He's looking for a clean, older, and well maintained Legacy or Outback, and is looking to spend approx $5,000, so my guess is the range would be 1998-2001. Thanks...Serge
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Hmm well there isn't a wagon, however there is a 96 Brighton coupe, AWD, 5MT, 1.8L (30mpg+ IIRC) with 138k miles for sale by a guy in queens, I think $1600, I was gonna pick it up but will probably just stick with my 240 for now.

Might be worth it, AC even works.

If I ever stumble on a used Miata for a TMV price, I may sell my cream puff '97 OB w/ 67k.

Don't hold your breath on me finding a reasonably priced decade old Miata though, lol.

Drove one over the weekend, will report on it later. Not a bad car, even in an AT.

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
How much, though, mike? I heard those are typically $38k plus.

I'd be interested in a 128i convertible if the price were reasonable, maybe euro delivery. I doubt it, though.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Took the family in for a test drive, see the 2009 Forester thread for details. We're pretty much waiting for the right one to get in stock, the LL Beans are popular and they sell out quickly.
  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
Opinions please...have a chance of buy it now.
    TMV is $7400

Miles are high, see if they already changed the timing belt once.

Then check the gaskets and front and main seals for oil leaks, maybe add in a compression test.

If it passes all those tests and drives smoothly, go for it. My dad's 2001 OB Ltd is running like a champ.
  • hammerheadhammerhead Member Posts: 907
Might be apples & oranges, but my 99 GT, 157K, I paid $6K.

    Cheers!

    juice,
We would love to do that, but the car is up in MA and we are down here in gatorland usa...Michael is willing to take a chance...how much would timing belt replacement run? Gasket replacement?

That is the catch. The guy paid $41k and it's got manual seats and no GPS.

I optioned out a 335ix coupe w/ Navi and 6mt and it was only $48k and that's got AWD. :)

I think I've finally got a plan for the next 6 or 7 years in terms of cars and what I can afford. Probably will get a 2010 or 2011 Legacy 3.6 or if the 3.6t comes out in spring of 2010 when my car payment ends on the Armada. Keep the Armada for towing and family haulin. By then the 05 LGT will have around 100k miles and it will become my beater/daily driver and the new Legacy will become my "good car". For a daily for the next 2 years I'll either drive the 240sx or sell it ang get a 98-01 altima.

Never ever buy a car sight unseen. Especially one over $1000.
