So you have slab construction which means no basement. Where is the furnace located and where does your duct work run?

I presume it's all in the attic or the furnace is in a utility room or the garage and the duct work in the attic?

HVAC - heating, ventilation, air conditioning.

The snow amounts you guys got are amazing. Where I live north of Boston, we saw nothing from both storms! Yesterdays' 4 to 8 prediction was a total bust. Rob M.

I'll agree. I'm northwest of Boston and we got a dusting. Last real snow was early January. I hope the mountains are making snow since it's school vacation week next week and we hope to get up there.

...and the winter is not over, as more snow is expected Monday. Our previous winter snow record of 62.5" was blown to smithereens this year.

That's a lot of snow! Funny, though, that the article you referenced says, "And if you can believe these guys, Baltimore has just bumped off Syracuse, N.Y. for first place as the snowiest city in the U.S. this winter."

Sorry to burst the bubble, but that honor goes to Valdez, Alaska, just like it does every other year.... Take a look at this article - one storm in December just about equaled Baltimore's total for the year so far. Of course, snowfall in Valdez is no news like it is in Baltimore! :D

Alaska is part of the United States??? But, you can see Russia from your house! ;)
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
Hahah, yeah, I could if it was about 550 miles further west.... :D

I have never been down to Valdez, but I would love to make it down there during the winter some time just to see all that snow piled up. It is far enough south (and along the ocean) that it experiences some melting episodes during the winter, but folks have told me that their streets are more like tunnels by the time Spring rolls around.

From that referenced article, "He was around for Valdez's record snowfall winter, 1989-90, when the city got 561 inches (almost 47 feet). The average is closer to 330."

    330" as average! :surprise:

I do have a basement (concrete floor), mostly below ground. The furnace is down there. There's a seperate A/C outside, but they use the same forced air ductwork.

My roof looks ok, not too much ice, so I think the house will be fine.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Lucien must be buried under all that snow, I guess that's why we haven't heard from him! :D

You need to drive down there and take some pics for us Wes. The snow piles in the cul-de-sacs get so high they show movies on them. :-)

I remember seeing some normal looking front doors, opening right up onto the snowy front yards. Then you realize it's a two story house and you're not looking at the first floor.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
well .. Russia would have to be about 550 miles further EAST and we don't want THAT now do we?
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
AND ... I'm sure I'm not the only one ... but every time I read that phrase all I can see is Tina Fey doing Palin on SNL with Amy Poehler as Hilary to the side ... and Tina's chirping .. "I can see Russia from my house!"
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
And I wonder if she had to write that on her hand in ball point pen in order to remember what to say!!
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
or as my husband likes to say ... one more 'made up' holiday!

And just so it's not misconstrued ... let me go on record as saying every day feels like Valentine's Day with this guy ... (maybe it's my perspective after the 26 years spent with the first husband ....hmmmm)
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Glad to hear that Brenda... Sounds like you deserved a break.

We all went to NYC's Chinatown to celebrate Chinese New Year. 14 families - a mix of adopted like us, and traditional families from the local Chinese language school that we some of us attend. About 1.5 hours by train from where we live to Grand Central, then the subway to the southern tip of Manhattan. A huge dinner, a parade & plenty of shopping. What an incredible day!

So the conspiracy theory is that we men made up this holiday so we only have to be nice 1 out of the 365 days in the year? ;)
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
no no no .. he calls it a "made up" holiday .. so that men would be 'required' to do something ... LOL
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
I agree, love is how you treat someone all year. It's not about buying overpriced red roses for one day. And yes I did because Dra does not necessarily agree with all my pilosophical stances.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
I didn't, but I did give my wife a cast iron meat rack a few days prior... does that count?!

What's love got to do, got to do with it?

Hahahahahah; no, it was all random. I actually purchased a timer and, rather than paying the shipping on Amazon, purchased the meat rack to up the total and qualify for free shipping. The charge on the timer was $8 for shipping versus $10 for the meat rack, which I had planned to buy in conjunction with a cast iron dutch oven.

My wife has wanted a dutch oven for a long, long while. Maybe I will get the oven in a couple months.... ? I don't want to lavish her with gifts or anything, she might make something of it and begin to develop expectations of me. :P

I did put a trailer hitch on the car Saturday night. If nothing else, that means I will at least have a place to ride the next time we take a long trip. :D

in the last month, DH has only had a very few days off .. working lots of overtime and with 12 hour shifts .. that doesn't leave much time free ...

he was off yesterday ... last night we went to a local Irish-themed pub and had dinner .. so I asked if it was our Valentine's Day dinner ... he said ... "told you, it's not a real holiday" ... LOL

at any rate .. it was very enjoyable ...

My advice on Irish pubs: If you are going for the beer, you'll usually be happier than if you are going for the food..

Wait... that's pretty much my advice on any place that serves beer! ;)

There is a local place that has Newcastle on tap.. It's kind of a neighborhood bar and grill.

Now, most anywhere else, that's not a big deal... But, for some reason, Newcastle at this place is like the nectar of the gods... Maybe it's the tap system, the glasses, the temperature.... or, all of it together.. Newcastle isn't even my favorite.. but, when I take that first drink, a feeling of happiness just descends upon me... :D

Now, if the place was non-smoking, I'd quit my job, sell the house, and rent one of those cheap crappy apartments, next door... :surprise:

it's a fun place ... lots of bigger tables and bench seating to encourage groups to sit together ... they usually have families earlier in the day/evening and then the adult crowd later in the evening. Most nights they have some sort of music .. it's not a huge place, but usually pretty busy! The food is good, desserts are wonderful and a good selection of beer and whiskeys. They even have wine for people like me who drink neither of the other .. LOL

My mother-in-law crashed her Camry earlier in the month (don't ask....), and so has been searching for a replacement. She's the one I've mentioned that lives out on the unmaintained battlefield road, and finally realizes that AWD would be a good idea.

I've been shopping around for a '07/'08 Legacy CPO for her, but they are still running north of $17k for a low mileage car. Yesterday she called me and asked about an Impreza sedan. Being that the Camry was the smallest car that she had ever owned, I was surprised by the question, but she drove a new '10 and liked it. So right now she's in final negotiations with the Fredricksburg dealer. For not that much more than the price of used, she gets to go new. Plus she gets added safety (VDC/VTD) with the new car that she wouldn't have with used.

Heard on the news this morning that due to Toyota's current issues, Consumer Reports has passed on the RAV4 and chosen the Forester (again) to be their Top Pick in the small SUV category :)

Poltergeist? No other bug reports like that one showing up.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
That sounds like a great way for her to go, Steve, especially if she does not need the extra cargo room very often. I have seriously considered a base model manual Impreza as a replacement for my Escort when the time comes. It gets very respectable fuel economy, doesn't cost much even new, and is safe yet "tossable;" all are good qualities for a car! :D

Yes, given how they have been Toyo fan-boys (and girls) for a while I wondered how CR was going to respond. They do have some wiggle room in that they did pull back last year (maybe 2) and no longer automatically recommend new Toyota models with no track record.

    Sudden acceleration? ;)
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
more like a "poster heist" ....
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
In short, yes! Only in her case, it was intended sudden acceleration in conjunction with a rotation of the wheel to the left --- into oncoming traffic! Sounds like she misjudged the speed of an oncoming car at a Y intersection that is know for poor sight distance. While we'll never let her live it down, it could have happened to any of us.

My dealer has loaned me a couple of Impreza's in the past. Coming from an Outback and a Legacy GT, I had a actually had a blast with a 5 door Premium. Nice little car, lots of pickup, and 32mpg on the highway was not too hard to take. Rob M.

Tied with Honda, but note that their average test score was the highest among all brands listed on p. 15, if you want a tie-breaker. :shades:

Forester is a Top Pick, too.

Subaru is listed dozens of times and always in a positive light. :)

Only because it lacks the active headrests.

I have mixed feelings about that. I don't want whiplash, of course, but the new headrests are intrusive and may even be uncomfortable for some folks (not me, but I've heard others complain).

It's like Volvo - great seats, wonderful headrests, but the darn things are so big they limit visibility. That could make them less safe, ironically.
