I've just started lurking over there this past month or so. There's some good/interesting info, but there's no question it's largely populated by Gen-Xers or younger.

It was because of the i-club that I started posting here. I had seen this forum but wasn't crazy about the way it's set up (I prefer the UBB). Someone on the i-club kept raving about Patti and Edmunds and I had to check it out further. I can't remember who that was (maybe Loosh??). Next thing you know, I'm going to the Philly Auto Show and meeting some of you, one which happened to be a 4th cousin I didn't know. :-)

Dennis - we can't be closer than 2nd. Will find out at the next family reunion sometime this summer.

Oh yeah, i-club - a much younger crowd but some pretty technically savvy ones too. I've learned a lot and gotten some good laughs over there. I thought it was a good idea to visit there often as the Forester is mechanically closely akin to the last-gen Impreza (there's that kin reference again).

Absolutely, absolutely....I'm just sayin', as an ageing Gen-Xer, that it isprolly a good idea for me to keep my nose out of OT is all. Except to vote MID-A over Tri State, of course! :-))))

Stephen: Where on the WA state website are the personalized plates? I have a couple ideas (still secret for now) :) that I could try...

Sorry to be AWOL from the chat... figured studying for paramedic recert test Friday morning was more important... but it's only once every three years, so I have to come up with a different lame excuse for the next 156 chats!

Great weekend, y'all... I'm home taking care of wife who is in the middle of a huge medication reaction... fun, huh? Not the best way to get the weekend off...

Remembering those that have gone before us...

    Cheers!

I think you'll find the WA personalized plates here
    https://public@services.dol.wa.gov/scripts/ihpsmain.dll?vs-pers
it's a secure site and acts up pretty queer on my MAC

then click on the personalized plate link.

    Cheers!

Dennis, can I take credit? Please? I know I've bragged about Patti a few times on the iClub. ;-)

Hi everyone, its been awhile. I wanted to tell you the sad story of my 2000 Legacy L Wagon.
On the evening of April 10th I was working the night shift when some storms moved into the area. They put out a severe thunderstorm warning with chance of large hail. Well, a couple of guys moved their cars under cover, and there was plenty of room for my Subaru there too. I actually had the keys in my hand, and was standing by the door of our shop, when I decided not to bother. They've forcasted hail before lots of times, and nothing bad ever happened...
Ten minutes later the storm hit, and we got about two minutes worth of your classic golfball sized hail. It was a sick feeling, hearing what sounded like a 4th of July fireworks grand finale going on outside, and knowing my year old car was out there getting pelted with large chunks of ice.
I guess Subaru uses high quality glass, mine was one of the few vehicles on base that didn't have any cracks on the windshield. There were, however, several hundred little dents all over the hood, roof, and the entire left side. State Farm estimated the damage at $6200.
So now its in the shop for four weeks, about to get a bunch of new sheet metal. I see there's a folder for pictures now, so I'll post before, during, and after repair photos. It'll look really weird seeing my car with the roof striped off!

    Dave B.

PS - Saw my first WRX on the road recently, a sedan, very nice. I'd love to get a WRX Wagon myself.

Well then you saw my post about how w/o tri-state the whole world would come crumbling down, so it is the better chapter ;)

Just visited the New Zealand Subaru site, and noted the following towing specs (assuming my metric conversion is accurate):

    H-4/6, without trailer brakes = 500 kg (1,102 lb.)

    H-4, with trailer brakes = 1,400 kg (3,086 lb.)

    H-6, with trailer brakes = 1,600 kg (3,527 lb.)

Why is it that New Zealand, and most of the rest of the world, gets a "braked" trailer rating that is so much higher than here in North America?

It's been a while. Glad to see your post.
Sorry to see the dints. Sounds like it's all
    taken care of.

I'm sure you had plenty of company w/ damage to
their property. It's one of those things.

    >>I'm sure you had plenty of company w/ damage to

No kidding. I work at an international airport, and over twenty airliners were grounded due to hail damage.
The good thing was that the hail didn't hit my house, just rained there.

Glad you got the site address. Beware though that there is a lag time between what the site shows available and what is being processed per applications. My 1st & 2nd choices showed available when I sent my app & $ in but I ended up w/my 3rd choice as available.

BTW, curious to know what your creativity as begot! :-)

Haven't got anything particularly snappy for the Sub yet... but a couple name things, as well as one for the motorhome... if I ever get around to 'em, I'll pass 'em on (but only after they're confirmed!) :)

    Cheers!

I met some folks from the I-Club at the Philly auto show (before the fine folks from Edmunds got there).

They were young, but very nice and knew their stuff.

Did something interesting happen over there lately? I'll try to check, but their boards are a bit long to really read.

Well, I think subaru could definitely use one of these. I drove my uncle's new 2002 3.2TLS over the weekend. It wasn't broken in yet, so I couldn't really give it a workout, but the 5-speed AT worked nicely. It was turning about 1500-1600 rpms in 5th gear @ 70mph! That would help a lot for gas milage. The manumatic was crisper than I thought it would be. I never drove any of the other manumatics on the market, but the acura one seems very good. Then again the 260hp engine probably helped too. The handling was definitely not as sure footed as an awd car, but it did have nice pickup and was very smooth.

Yeah, Colin maybe it was you. Whoever it was, I'll have to thank for helping speed up my clutch case problem and all of the other great things here. Ironically, my very first Edmunds post was to warn someone about bad experiences I had a that particular dealer.

Patti, yes the i-club does have a lot of activity. Loosh was talking about the Off-Topic forum (I'm not sure which post). A current hot topic in the OT forum is to vote for your favorite regional forum, which I haven't had time to check out yet.

I still don't get it (license plate). Just tell me what the 'SO' stands for.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
The TL 5 speed manu-matic is supposed to shift quicker in manual mode (according to Acura). I drove one last year and thought it was quick to shift also. C'mon Subaru, make one of these trannys!

    -Brian
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I agree, guys. A 5 speed auto would be great.

Everyone here knows I love manuals, but face it - most people buy automatic. That's what would help them meet fuel economy targets without a loss in performance.

Heck, you'd gain performance, if anything. Give it a slightly shorter final drive (numerically higher), and then keep 1st-4th where they are now and make 5th a fuel miser for cruising.

    -juice
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
...the TL was originally a 4 speed manu-matic. But, in 2000, they gave it a 5 speed manu-matic, which upped it's MPG by 1 or 2 and I believe it was a tad quicker in the quarter mile tests. Their 5 speed version doesn't let you manually choose first, you get a 1-2 shift automatically, then 3 - 5 are all yours.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If you ask me, if the buyer wants manual control, let him have it. By that I mean all gears, all conditions, with the exception of exceeding the rev limiter on a shift.

I'm afraid to say anymore than (I'm probably going to be shot down for this)

    "S"...."O"

    What does it sound like?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Well the 5-speed manumatic on the TL"S" allows 1,2,3,4,5 you choose the gear. Once his car i broken in, I'll let you know if it auto-upshifts @ redline or if it just bounces you off the rev-limiter. It's a nifty little setup.

Hey, this isn't directly subie related, but figured I'd ask around. I'm looking to get a canopy (almost car-port-like) so that I can park my new truck out of harms way from sap coming off the trees at my lake house. Anyone out here buy one for their car? This is the one I'm looking at. http://mirror1.overtons.com/cgi-bin/overtons/order/pdetail.cgi?94785++2I

    Thanks.

For $220 we could build you one out of lumber. :-)

I think Costco carries that same one, if you're a member. Sure enough, go to costco.com and look under Hardware & Outdoor, then click the hardware link.

They have two models, both 10'x20', for $150 and $240.

How 'bout the kiddies play parachute (10' dia) $29.00

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Juice, Thanks for the lead on costco. That one for $149 is actually better than the one I was gonna get. Now hopefully they'll have it at my local costco where my buddy has a membership! :)

I think that parachute would be rounded.

And we all know Troopers are boxy, the way paisan like 'em! ;-)

You know that parachute might work BEHIND my truck, you know when you are doing 110 in the rain down a mountain road straightaway, it could help slow it down before the right turn.... :)

we're packing up the PC tonight, so I might be out of touch for a few days. I'll try from work tomorrow, but it's a bit nuts these days.

Have a great few days and I'm looking forward to logging in to catch up over the weekend!

Patti (a very happy Patti, I mean)!!

The episode of MotorWeek I caught over the weekend included an update (at 7,500 miles, I think; wasn't taking notes or anything) on their long-term road test of the Outback VDC. Mostly raved about it, except once again criticized the cost as being too high. They also said that an H6 version of the Outback Sedan was due this summer, and hinted that they expected it to be steeply priced, too.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
The H6 Sedan was announced at the NY Int'l Auto Show back in April. Also in 2002 the VDCs will get an "off" switch, and you will also be able to purchase/have installed @ cost an off switch for 2001 VDCs as well.

    Good article.
Patti, please do something about this quote:
"..But without the two-speed transfer case, its applications are limited. Don't expect to do any really rugged off-roading."

    Dennis
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
    Hypov- Ugh!

Dennis- I know I'm probably in the minority here but with the exception of pulling a boat out of the water, I don't really see the need for a two-speed transfer case in a Subaru. Can you picture your average Subaru owner tackling the Rubicon Trail? Besides, the lack of ground clearance accompanied with the poor approach and departure angles will keep any Subaru from venturing too far off the beaten path. True off-road enthusiasts will buy a Jeep or similar type SUV. In fact, I had a Cherokee and even though I took it into some fairly rugged places, I never needed 4-low.

Okay everybody, I asked for it, feel free to bring on the heat!

    -Frank P.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Subarus are not really made up for the task of off-roading, unless you lift it and chop the bumpers. That's why I have a subaru and an Isuzu :)
