They keep postponing that law, meanwhile some are adding them voluntarily.

C'mon Subaru...at least make it a-la-carte and don't bundle it with expensive options and models.

Yeah I added the rear view camera when I swapped out the head unit for an indash navigation head unit. I had cause not long after I added it, to be really glad that I did.

I was parked in a Walmart lot and was just backing out of a parking space, when unknown to me a little kid got away from his mother, he ran right across the back of my car below my line of sight, luckily I spotted him in the camera.
Had I not had a camera the kid would have been hurt or worse.

It does make me wonder why all cars are not fitted with them, the mid level KIA RIO has the camera as standard, and that is what a $15,000 car in the US.

    Cheers Pat.

Last week, when I've had my Impreza ~30 days & less than 1100 miles:

I'm stopped at a signal, the car behind me and cars all around me are STOPPED. The idiot behind me suddenly slams into me! The light was still RED (I checked). Hit hard enough to dent and punch holes in my bumper.

He couldn't provide specific insurance information but fortunately my insurance is working on it and waived my deductible. Should be fixed in the next few weeks.

Car woes and then some .. you guys saw my long post about all the issues with my old car awhile back ...

We 'took a break' with trying to get it solved at the garage. Husband drove it a few weeks trying to figure out what the issue was. Some days fine; some days not. I was driving his dad's old Cadillac we'd had to take from him (nicknamed "The Red Beast" - no, I do not 'like' it). Last weekend, he told me we'd take my car back to the garage on Sunday night to drop it off. He went out to start his car (the old Lincoln - "The Black Turd" as he calls it) and it wouldn't start. He charged battery .. no go ... tried jumping .. no go). So - we didn't take my car in. On Monday, I started The Red Beast and it was idling really rough - but no other car to take so off I go. That thing ran rough all day long - check engine light would come on and stay on and at times blink for awhile. I did get to both schools and home, but had a co-worker follow me home!
Tuesday, I took a "personal day". I was going to have to rent a car for awhile if we couldn't get something fixed! Husband put a new battery in his on Tuesday morning and got it running again. We took my car back to garage. THIS time they got the misfires and found a problem in the wiring to the 3rd cylinder. (Yep, everyone had correctly diagnosed a probably issue in wiring.) Turns out this is part of the wiring harness for the engine - which costs about $1500 new. Even the 'junk dealers' ... excuse me .... "gently-used after market parts dealers" .... didn't want to take this part of the harness off so they could sell the entire harness as one piece. Somehow the mechanic "repaired" the wiring. Garage charged me $65 for labor. Yesterday it ran great. Let's hope it's really fixed this time!

(Of course it should be 'happy'. It has a new muffler, a new coil pack, new alternator, new ball joints, new brakes, an alignment ... and other things I can't even think of right now!)
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Lucky to have a mechanic who will try to fix something, or something that can be fixed. I have dropped $1000's on replacement "modules" in the monster truck. "If it's broke, you put in a new one."
OUr gremlin experience of truck eating batteries, dying spontaneously and coming back to life went away completely when they replaced our battery terminals.
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
Praying for you that this is THE solution to the gremlins!
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
I second that! It's high time for some sweet dreams after the duration of this nightmare! LOL

I am afraid I am at the age when I no longer want to deal with gremlins and running repairs. Although my car is still meticulously maintained, and has a low annual mileage, when I buy a new car I take an extended warranty.
In the case of the Mazda I took the warranty for seven years 100K miles bumper to bumper, just before the warranty expires the car will be gone, and if it becomes problematic before then it will be gone sooner.
To date it has performed flawlessly so I do not expect any serious issues.

    Cheers Pat.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
Hard to have an 'extended' warranty on a car that is 13 years old ... lol

I do still like my 01 Outback and am trying to get daughter's college loans paid off before taking on another new car. So far - even with expensive repairs - we're still 'ahead' of having a car payment. It IS a pain, especially when all THREE of our old cars had problems at the same time last week!
  • grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
    G'day

My car is a tool of trade and has to be reliable. If my car is off the road, I lose income. Therefore I have usually rolled the car over at three to four years. I ran the 1999 Outback for five and a half years at which stage expensive things started happening (clutch etc.).

Then I bought a Toyota Kluger (Highlander to you). Almost nine years later and with 225,000km (about 140,000 miles), the car seems to be almost bullet-proof. I have long since paid out the lease and so it is costing me only running costs, registration and insurance. Brakes lasted about 170,000km and tyres are running 90,000km before changes, so remarkably cheap. We have a huge number of Kluger's on our office fleet (I prefer to own and operate my own car, but most prefer the employer to pay) and are replicating the experience over and over. I had never really believed the story of Toyota reliability but seeing the impact on my wallet, understand it better.

I have now decided to run it until I spend $3,000 in a month and have entered a competition with a colleague to see who can keep their car the longest. However he has an advantage in being trained as a motor mechanic.

    Cheers

    Graham

Hope they do a good job fixing it. Good luck to you and Brenda to resolve these issues.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
seven years 100K miles bumper to bumper

Then what you do it sell it when it has 98k miles, so the buyer has piece of mind.

I did that and the car sold quickly and for full asking price.
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
we've used this shop before. they do great work and their customer service is TOPS!

my wife was really impressed with them too, many years ago when she crunched her jeep.

dropped off the car today (monday), original schedule was wednesday, but removing the bumper cover they found a bent bar. order and delivery of the part delays completion 'til friday.

insurance covers a rental car during the repair. i ended up with a vw jetta, which (in sportwagon form) was second on my short list. soooo glad the impreza was first on my short list! love (and currently miss) my impreza.
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Ah at the rate I put miles on now it won't be any where near that mileage LOL. But I will definitely sell before warranty runs out.

So sorry to hear that Jim. Major bummer!

Thanks for the note, and hope you saw the reply. My annual ISTFA trip was so damn packed this year that I just couldn't get away. We ran until 9-10 PM each night with dinners and seminars. Crazy, exhausting but love every minute of it.

I actually got out to San Jose a day late this year, which further packed my schedule. Emily's marching band played at MetLife stadium (home of the Jets & Giants) in the USBand's Mid-Atlantic Championships, and took 4th place in the highest (level 6) class! As she's a senior and this was her very last performance, how could I miss it??

    Hi Steve,

    Yes, I got your msg.

Congrats to Emily. Those times are precious.

The body shop has provided almost daily updates on their progress. Looks 99% like completion by noon friday.

  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
got my impreza back! just like new.

guy at the body shop showed me pix of the damaged inner bumper support, said the driver hit me pretty hard to bend the bar like that but no frame damage.

the idiot did all that damage from a standing start at a stop light that was still RED.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's strange. Can't even blame inattentiveness for that.

No frame damage, so just put it behind you. :)

That's fantastic, Bob! That's about the one reason I wish we lived closer to our families. I think our kids really miss out (for better or for worse) by not having those family connections. Once every four years is fine for me, but that's like a lifetime for them.

I do think that my Subaru is running just fine after the 'wiring fix'. And it's certainly quieter with the new exhaust system. Good thing .. just in time for the winter weather! Husband's cars have both been back in since ... one needed a new coil and the other one appears to need a starter! The joys of 'older cars' .. lol

Well, at least your "older cars" aren't OLDER cars! I'm getting to the point where I dread what will fail next on my plow truck every time I have to use it! Happily, when I used it on Saturday, the only thing that failed was one of the clasps on the tire chains. I ended up losing it while working on my second-to-last driveway, and I thought I heard it go (but had not had that happen before, so it was not registering on my "realms of possibility" scale) but kept going any way.

Then, on the next driveway, I slipped into the ditch. Normally, this is no problem, as I can drive it right back out of pretty much any predicament I put it in, but not so this time. I could go back and forth, but could NOT climb out of that ditch to save my (or its) life. Thankfully, my neighbor (works on the slope, so only here every other two weeks) happened to be home on an off-cycle, so he was able to pluck me out with no drama.

To top off the whole experience, I felt very strongly about when and where I lost that chain, so I trekked down there with my son yesterday while we had daylight (albeit dim light!), poked around in the snow for a few minutes, and VIOLA! Now, I just have to fix the chain and I'll be back in business. :p

Hey Wes, are you guys drowning in it this yearÉ. We have already seen 70% of our annual average snowfall, and it would have been more if not for 3 rainstorms. Lots of Pacific air with moisture and higher than normal temps.

Yeah, pretty much! Winter was a month late this year (not complaining here) in that it didn't start dropping under freezing in the day nor did we get any snow until Halloween day. Yet, we have 36" of snow already this year, which is better than half of our annual average. What's more, the weather has been so warm on average that the snow is probably 30" deep. We usually get so much sublimation and compaction throughout the winter that even though we have 60"+ by winter's end, it is still only 20" deep.

So, yes, I hate to say it, but I'm looking forward to maybe getting less snow and more cold for a while. Tonight will mark my seventh plowing of the winter, and that's often as many times as I will plow for the whole of it!

As an aside, I noticed quite a bit of sprawl in Prince George when we drove through in September. It seems that none of us can escape it! :'(

We're at 59" to 62", depending on the source you ask. The Outback is getting lots of use, including another 2 hour highway drive in pretty good conditions this afternoon.

@Volkov, your ? mark symbol is curious. I've seen some other bad translations of characters in old news stories that were pasted here with the old forum software but those have all been "quotes" or 'apostrophes'. Hm, one site indicates that the É may use the same code for the international apostrophe key. Anyway, that issue was reported the other day and I'll add your funny É to that ticket.

Well, do you really want to know? :p

The plow truck is 1976 (Ford F250), my Chevy P/U and Econoline are both 1969s.

BUT, those are all a long way from being daily drivers any more (I used my Chevy and Econoline as DDs from about 1995 until 2000, but have maybe put 6,000 miles combined on them since then!). I have come to appreciate having new cars (I think four years old and two years old constitutes new) as daily drivers recently. I sold my '98 Escort in August of 2012, so I've been fairly drama-free for the last year+ as far as emergency repairs go.

What I meant in my reply was that even though your cars have some years (and miles) on them, they are still fairly modern in terms of their "feel." It's really amazing some of the stuff that starts failing after thirty or forty years. :'(

Yeah Wes, lots of new construction. Silly thing is that we have 3 new large subdivisions going up but the population has not increased over the last decade. Not surprisingly, many of these new homes are not selling. I hate them - they are supposed to be executive homes, but the first thing they do is mow down every tree. You can see every home in the entire neighbourhood from your front and back window. Love our older neighbourhood with lots of mature trees.

One way to do it is to bookmark the discussions you want to follow. Then click My Bookmarks and read a discussion. After reading that discussion you can use the backspace key and the My Bookmarks page will be refreshed with the remaining unread messages. The unread discussions you have bookmarked will be in bright blue while your read discussions will be sort of grayed out.

You may want to click on Recent Discussions now and then too so what things people are asking elsewhere on the forums.
