however, my first Subaru did not go off to a nice home with some lovely Seniors. I had to watch it on the back of a flat bed going to the junk heap after my son wrecked it - It was an '83 and we still talk about that car.

My sympathies!

Brian: nice choice.

I'd try to get the oil changed before you get back. Try to do it some time between 1k and 3k miles or so.

It's OK to take the trip before you're broken in, just be sure to vary your speeds a bit.

Had the Explorer in for 85K service, and to fix an erratic idle. On my return drive home I discovered someone stole my Passport radar detector! Can you believe that!

I quickly returned to the dealer, and they said get a new one, show us the receipt, and we'll reimburse you. No questions asked.

>>Our society is going down the tubes... <<

They've been saying that since there's been a language with which to say it.

Well I've got about a week to go before I get my wagon back from the body shop. Four weeks has turned into six weeks; this is as bad as waiting for them to build it in the first place. Worse, because now I know just how much I like to drive it. I had hoped to get more pictures of the work in progress, but decided I didn't want to see it again until its done. If I don't see it I won't think about it as much. Yeah, right. One more week, one more week...

I had to wait 3 months for my Forester to get fixed... for similar amount of damage (ca 7K)

They had it in the shop that long?? Were they working on it one hour a day? Yikes.

One hour a day? Sounds more like one hour a week!

Nice chat last night. We got so busy towards the middle that I could not keep up! We had a lot of new names, too.

Bob: my dad once bought his own muffler and took it to a shop to install it, and they had the gall to charge him for the muffler! We had to crawl under there to prove it was ours!

Man Juice, that is the height of CBism IMHO.

The only time I bring my own parts is if I know that it's a specialty part that the installer can't get ahold of or asked me to get for them. My uncle screwed my dad at a few shops cause he did stuff like that.

My dad invented frugality. I think he has a patent.

Though I've bought parts from Darlene and had a shop install them. They'd otherwise be paying retail for some dealer to order it for them - and take longer doing it.

I logged on before 9 and waited until about 9:15 (EDT) and nothing - it was weird. I was surprised no one was there and I tried posting "hello" to see if it would move and still nothing. I went over to the Mazda chat to see if anything was happening there and - nothing again. I kept going out and then in again hoping to see someone there and found no one - not even Drew. I wrote to Edmunds on-line support to see if there was a problem, but then I noticed that they don't respond for 2 days.

I'm bummed I missed a good one. Last week was very quiet, but some folks were there. I was able to navigate through Edmunds with no problem, so I don't think it was my computer.

What do you think happened?

Hey Patti - I just wanted to say thanks again for your help earlier this year with my GT wagon. I'm still really happy with the way it all worked out. Love this car. It's OCD perfect.

Sometimes AOL can't access the chat for some reason. If I go to either Explorer or Navigator, usually one of those will allow me access.

Are you going to make it to the camping/off-roading trip in July? Should be a hoot. I hope we can twist Juice's arm to come with the forester too! Any other takers? Bluesubie?

Howdy,
Just joining in on this group. We own a 97 Outback Sport and an 01 Forester S (blue!), tickled with both, although the 97 is starting to develop maintenance "personality." I'm real pleased with the Forester, however, and it never ceases to amaze me in daily traffic and off-road here in Central Florida.
Look forward to interacting with everyone. - perrito

Accessing the chat room through AOL or IE didn't work.
• kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
sometimes java applet access does not work (it looks like room is empty). In this case, change your settings in Profile and try HTML access. It's more robust but you need to keep refreshing page, to keep up.
• kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Sorry I missed the chat too. My excuse was that I've been swamped here at work!

Maybe next week....

• rangerron7rangerron7 Member Posts: 317
Your absolutely right about the room looking like it was empty. Although the Java applet did fire up, there was nothing in the Chat box.
Where would i change my profile, in AOL??
Thanks,
Ron
• kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
Rangerron,

look at the link at this page that says Preferences. Go there and change your preferences to HTML for Chat settings.
• drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Patti, I'm sorry that you missed the chat last night because of technical issues. In future if you have a problem accessing the chat, please write directly to me at drew@edmunds.com. My e-mail programme checks the account every few minutes and I should be able to respond quickly enough so that you won't miss the entire chat. Or, if you have AOL Instant Messenger, my nickname is "Mklasse 1".

Ron and Patti, I see that you're both using AOL and that is probably why you had problems entering the chat. We've had problems with the AOL browser and our chats, and the best way for you to get around it is to use a non-AOL browser, as Bob mentioned above. Internet Explorer usually works the best from my experience, but others have had success with Netscape too. The last resort if you can't get in, is for you try switching the chat preferences from "Java chat applet" to "HTML/Javascript chat". You can access your preferences by scrolling to the top of the page of any discussion topic, and the link will be next to the "Welcome " text, just above the discussion topic title. The drawback to using the HTML chat is that you have to refresh the page in order to see the new text that others have typed into the chat window.

Of course, the best way (but not the most convenient) is to just drop AOL and use another ISP ;-). A good excuse to get ADSL or cable modem access! ;-)

I hope this helps!

I've changed my preferences.
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If bit says its perfect, it's perfect. Give the QC inspectors a pat on the back! ;-)

perrito: 2 more Subies in Florida? Wow, that almost doubles our sunshine state contingent! Welcome!

Off topic - just saw "The Fast and the Furious" (uh, long lunch), and as long as you're not expecting much dialogue, gear heads will like it.

I think the harpoon scenes were a bit over the top, and the flames from the exhaust were comical, but the cars are certainly interesting. Center stage is given to a Mitsu Eclipse, an RX7, and a Supra. Other prominent cars included a Jetta, Integra, and 3 Civics, plus a Charger (IIRC).

Bummer - I looked and saw not a single Subaru, though it may have been filmed before the Rex was out.

Ignore the dialogue (why would you need to double-clutch in a drag race?), just sit back and enjoy the action, and it's worth it. Just opened nation-wide today.

PS They kept referring to nitrous as "NoS", pronouned "noss". I'd never heard is said like that, even though it's written that way.
• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I went into my preferences, as Kate had suggested, and found that neither item had been selected. Could that be a reason for not getting into the chat rooms?

Please note, I forgot about Thursday's chat, but as I've stated before, I've had problems in the past using AOL. One more thing, before I can log on to either Explorer or Netscape, for me, I have to have AOL going also.

Bob
• hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
Bob,
keep AOL on (I think you'll be disconnected if you close AOL window), just minimize it then open Explorer as a separate window.
• grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
G'day

I suspect the AOL point may be a red herring. I was accessing through Internet Explorer 5.50 and had the "Empty Room" effect. For me, because of the time differences, I thought maybe I was an hour early and therefore tried refreshing repeatedly across the hour and immediately afterwards.

I had just decided that no-one was home!

Not sure what was wrong

Cheers

The only way I can access Explorer or Navigator is by having AOL running. If I quit AOL, I can't access the other two.

G'day

In reading through posts on these boards, I saw mention of a "Big Horn". What is it?

Here in Australia, the phrase implies (actually implies is a bit mild, perhaps I mean reinforces or something) extreme male sexual excitement.

Probably won't see anybody selling one here.

Cheers

Folks who use AOL need to have it 'on' so that their connection to the Internet is established. If you're not connected to the Internet, you won't get, as they say, jack.

You ---> AOL ---> Internet

Any questions?

:-)

I second Drew's recommendation regarding dumping AOL (even if it's not the sole culprit in this case). But then again, I'm not exactly unbiased since my opinion of AOL parallels Paisan's opinion of Ford (and CU apparently). Which is to say that we don't care for them.

I'm in agreement with you about AOL, although it is a good learning tool for extreme beginners on the internet (like less than 1 year on the net) but eventually need to cut the training wheels out! :)

Out of the blue yesterday I got a call at work from the body shop saying my car was ready! A whole week early. Yippee!
I ended up getting to leave work a little early, dropped off the rental, got a ride over the shop arriving about 4 pm. Walked in the door, told them I was here for the Subaru, and the woman says, "Oh, that's not going to be ready until five thirty."
I swear the guy who called me said it was ready. Anyway, rather than sit around for an hour and a half, I called my wife to see if she'd pick me up and maybe we could do something in the meantime. Big mistake. She freaks out, having had to deal with some other issues we'd had with these people.
She drives over and storms into the shop calling everyone and their brother a bunch of liars etc.
Finally someone tells me its going to be ready in a few minutes, so my wife (who's PO'd at me for NOT getting nail spitting angry along with her) leaves and I end up sitting there another twenty minutes until they drive it up to the front door.
So I check it out, and in doing so, discover that they never cleaned out all the dust and residue that got into the engine compartment. So... back it goes to get cleaned off some more.
Finally, I drive off, and on the way home I notice that all the stickers that were on my windshield when I dropped the car off are gone.
Sure enough, on further inspection I can tell its been replaced, something that wasn't in the original plan, and something I was never told about.
And of course, after I got home, I started to notice a few OCD things. The finish looks good, but the gap for the roof gutter is a bit too wide on the right side, and some of the window seal on the back is not secured on the leading edge. Sigh. At least it still drives as good as ever, and it does look good unless you look really close. As long as it doesn't leak, I'll problably just glue down the rubber, get new stickers, and tell everyone I know to steer clear of the place.

Yesterday was a good day for Subaru on SpeedVision.

• First I saw an infomercial called "Road to a Rally," which was a 1/2 hour hour about Subaru's SCCA Rally Team here in the USA. It was quite interesting in that it went into quite a bit of detail on the USA Subaru rally effort, and their first win here.

Question: What's the difference between the Group "N" and "Open" rally classes? BTW, Subaru won both classes in their first race. The "Open" class Subie racer had bug-eye headlights that would make the original Austin Healy Sprite look utterly tame by comparison.

• They also showed the Cyprus Rally, in which Subaru came in second. One of the three Subie racers caught fire and was destroyed.

Well I just got finished test driving my uncle's '97 OB and then jumped in my cousin's '00 OB. I have to say, I'd take the '97 any day over the '00 as far as power, handling and overall performance. Comfort in the '00 was much better. The DOHC engine gave much more grunt, and it handled quite well through speedy turns. Guess I'll be looking for a '97->'99 Legacy GT when the time comes. :)

If I have a problem next week, I'll try the suggestions and be persistant. It was weird because we were watching Hitchcock's Vertigo - what is real and what isn't - it added to a "creepy" feel.

I'm looking forward to next week!

Glad to see you back, I just get to check in once a week now summer and cottage you know.

Anyway this is a bit past the use by date but here it is anyway, the 86 to 93 Accord was a very easy car to get into, a screwdriver in the side of either front door handle then lever up on the lock and you were in.

But do not get too complacent, because of the frameless windows the Subaru is even easier to get into, just a pry bar of any kind to lever the glass away from the rubber and then a long rod rod to flip the power door switch and you are in takes all of about ten seconds.

BTW. Honda have made it more difficult to get into their cars since 94, but a determined thief will get into any car, and no before you ask I do not moonlight as a car thief, Ha!Ha!

Cheers Pat.
• kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Mike,

Although the DOHC engine produces slightly less torque, the 97-99 OB had lighter weight going for them. I read somewhere in i-club that a 97-99 Legacy GT has fairly close performance figures to the 2.5RS.
