This guy does:

Actually, in '99 or so I saw a triple black Monte Carlo Z34, new, on our local dealer's lot and I liked it a lot, especially for the sticker price at the time--under $20K I remember. By that time the Z34 had a 3.8 I'm pretty sure.

Must be a Romney voter..... Nah, that would be strapping the dog to the roof.

We used to just ride in the cargo area of my mom's old 57 Plymouth wagon.

One time I was on the road, stopped at a traffic light, with a VW van in front of me. When the light turned green, the top of the back door on the van flipped open and a kid fell out! Didn't seem any worse for the wear but a bit of a shocker.

LOL, those days are long gone. A buddy of mine used to ride in the back of his dad's f series "camper special" in the late 70's while his dad pulled a camper on weekend camping trips. It did have a cap over the bed.

Now days, the little guy has to be strapped in a booster/car seat. I'm surprised they don't need a helmet;)

How did any of us survive?

While child safety seats are definitely a good idea, man are they a PITA to install or God forbid you have to switch them between cars.

Having endured installing a child safety seat into a coupe, I wouldn't be surprised if the decline in coupe sales correlate with the rise of child seat use/regulation. That maybe a stretch, but my God, trying to install a child seat into the back seat of a coupe is torture. Even with the seat in place, securing a child in one is still a major PITA when you have to bend and twist to get the little guy strapped in.

I can remember the days of two door station wagons. The idea was the kids were safer without their own doors!

Since the 3,996 SRX's recalled for fire potential were discussed and viewed so often here, and I didn't see this here anywhere, thought I'd post it:

What GM truck/SUV would that be? A 6.2 powered truck or SUV ain't getting 21mpg hwy (maybe at 45mph), the 5.3 has nowhere near 400 ft-lbs of torque, and the hybrid doesn't have a 6 speed

335 ft-lbs 5000 lbs 21 hwy from the 5.3
I thought I saw 385 ft-lbs. My eyes are going, turning 3s into 8s.
For someone dropping $38k for a new truck, the $314 difference in gas costs over a year for 21 vs 29 mpg for 7000 miles isn't enough to demand a pro sports salary.
Based on easily getting 34 in a 30 rated 6 spd Impala recently, I'm sure I could manage 21 from the 19 hwy rated 6.2L. The hwy rating has fluff in it.

Heck, I was in the Boy Scouts back in the day and at least six of us would be riding in the back of one of the father's trucks or campers and nobody complained. Heck, we kids thought it was pretty cool.

I agree. Fuel costs isn't that big of an issue for those who actually want/need a truck/suv. If I weren't driving a $40k SUV that get's 12-15 mpg, I'd likely be driving a $40-60k car that gets 20mpg.

As for highway mileage, I think it's harder to beat in a truck vs a car. Having had 3 SUV's, all from different makes, none have ever beat hwy mileage on a routine basis. You'd have to drive awfully slow <65 to do it.

Drove the Expedition to St. Louis and back yesterday. 380 mile round trip. Got about 14.5 mpg. 20-25mph wind out of the NW and 15 degree with cruise set at 75.

did ya go up in that weird St.Louie 'Arch'? That sucker is very weird ta go up in, if you want ta give it a try. You sit in a little car like a roller coaster and this chain pulley-mechanism stretches and pulls the cars up to the top. There is a small amount of walking room up there after you get out of the pulley car.

Gas prices are evidently going up 65 cents/gal by early summer.

I remember going up in the Gateway Arch with my grandparents back in the summer of '86. I thought it was pretty cool.

Unfortunately, afterwards, we got lost in that city of brotherly love, and had to ask directions from the locals, who weren't too nice. The first guy we asked simply shouted back "What I look like? Christopher Colum-BO?" although I could swear it looked like his lips were saying something else.

Another guy though, was very helpful. Gave us directions on how to get back to the expressway for five dollars. I remember it involved going down about a half a block until I came to a Torino with no wheels on it, and inside that Torino was his cousin Jack. Just tell him we were lost, and he'd hook us up! Ah, the part America most of us never get to see... :P

I went up it in 1978, when a school buddy of mine and I went to visit another school buddy who was going to Wash. U. out there (he still lives in St. Louis).

I thought the ride up was pretty cool, but claustrophobic. I remember the museum at the bottom and a letter from Princess Margaret and Prince Snowden, saying how much they enjoyed the Arch. I also remember being in about second grade in 1965 and reading in 'The Weekly Reader', how the Arch was being built.

Andre, your 'tour' of St. Louis very much reminds me of the Griswolds in Vacation--when they got off in E. St. Louis first and their car was robbed of all four wheels and tires while they were sitting in it!

Yeah, that's actually what I was referencing! Actually, our vacation out there was pretty harmless. Granddad found where he needed to go pretty easily, none of that "Clark, I don't think this is the right exit...what does it matter honey, as long as we're over the river!" nonsense.

And their '85 LeSabre escaped that city with all four wheels and wire hubcaps still on it. :shades:

Oh, and on the subject of car mileage and such, once they actually managed to eke 29 mpg out of that car! It was somewhat unusual circumstances though. Early spring, driving across the desert, flat ground, a/c off, and Granddad driving. Speed limit was still 55 back then, so he'd usually do 55-60, rarely 65 as Grandmom would start stomping the imaginary brake pedal on the passenger side when he got too fast. Nevermind the fact that if Grandmom drove, she'd often be the fastest thing on the road!

I was still in my teens when I first went to St. Louis to see the zoo and a ballgame. I was promptly told to get my a** back to Mississippi.

On the bright side, that was 1969 and the Mets won, and went all the way and made me a lifetime Mets fan (even though my Dad knew Daffy Dean).

The year my wife and I went to the museum and the arch (81-ish), I parked on the street and someone broke out the vent window on our beater Datsun wagon and stole a watch and the only arrowhead I've ever found.

Never had much luck in St. Louis.

GM seems to do okay there though. (bizjournals.com)

Hilarious, I have a childhood friend who goes back and forth with me with those lines all the time. See the sign that says Rib Tips? :shades:

And it is related to GM, the guy with the strangely moving lips appears to have a very nice 79-83 (when the movie was made) Eldo, fairly stylish if optioned correctly.
• uplanderguyuplanderguy Member Posts: 16,906
Duh, that's what I get when I don't click the link!

I think that Eldorado looks good to my almost 54-year old eyes today! That iteration reminds me of the '67-70--razor-sharp edges, etc.

OK, the light brown wagon that is first seen with no wheels/tires in the clip--what year and make?

A nice light blue or blue variant Eldo with no vinyl top, the kind of alloy wheels they offered then, no continental kit or faux Rolls grille etc, would be a nice cruiser.

The wagon is a 64 Ford, probably a Country Sedan.

Nah, been there done that. Definitely a neat experience to go up in the Arch, kids loved it. Not a ride for those who fear tight spaces;)

We were down there for the boat show. The 2-3mpg of the boat my wife wants makes my Expedition look green;)

Place was surprisingly busy.

Next weekend I'll be going to the Chicago Autoshow. I've been putting 400 miles a weekend on the Expedition lately. This is the 3rd week in a row I've driven 300+ miles round trip to someplace.

The Expedition has been racking up the miles. Hit 97k miles yesterday. I'll put another 350+ on it next weekend.

Then the weekend after that, we'll likely hit the Indy boatshow. Which of course is another 300 mile round trip. Might take the Taurus, but we all prefer to travel in the Expe.

Hey, the Mets are fun to follow. Unlike, say, the Cubs.

Beginning to sound like a Ford/Chevy rivalry around here. ;)
• fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
This is true. The Mets make the playoffs once a decade and every 30 years or so actually win it all. If they ever get owners that aren't leveraged up past their eyeballs.....

Well, the Mets still own the Cubs thanks to that epic choke! Both teams can stink at times, but at either park if the team really sucks that day you can watch the traffic in or out of LaGuardia or O'Hare depending on the winds. You'll probably get more variety at a Mets game, but less airliner count. Most of the traffic over Wrigley is from the north side of O'Hare so it tends to be dominated by United. The American jets are more frequent on the south side of O'Hare. If I had to pick, I'd probably go with Wrigley - not only a very historic and traditional park, but I prefer Chicago style pizza and hot dogs (not to say I would turn down a nice folded thin crust NY cheese or pepperoni pie though, but keep those dogs off the metal grill contraption and steam 'em!).
• fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
I love Wrigley Field. I just hope that as they start to do a Fenway type upgrade that they keep the whole idea that the Red Sox have adhered to - making the new sections look like they've always been there.

There are folks that get driven crazy by places like Wrigley where the facilities are, shall we say, primitive - but that's all part of the total package. I was there once before they put in the lights and several times after that.

from 'NL's Vacation', it can be so realistic sometimes. :surprise:

Yeah, I remember the rapel ride up the Arch being extremely clausterphobic, but I wanted so much to look around once up at the top that it didn't matter. St.Louis is where my wife, son and I discovered The Drive-By Truckers, a rock band that all of us agree we like. Saw them first at Mississippi Nights on the waterfront.

That was April 2, 2004, on a weekend off while going to college in Rolla, MO. Oh, those were the days. Lately I've been missing mid-Missouri, I love the look of the Ozark Mountains with that stark green grass and rolling hills all around. Very humid area and there are frequent chances for one and all to run free from a tornado, too. :P

We're trying to get down to the Tampa area next month; my brother met David Robertson of Yankees fame last year fishing down there and he's back in the area campground hosting again so we could camp with them. Sounds like the Yanks games are often sold out, but there's lots of other Spring training going on in the area. Got to see Detroit in Lakeland a few years back.

Just need to get my Buick driving mother in law a bit healthier before we can take off (how's that for a topic segue? :P )

That Ford wagon, I agree, would be a '64 Country Sedan, the 'Galaxie 500' iteration of their wagons that year. One can tell by the molding at the leading edge of the front fender, which lesser Ranch Wagons didn't have.

Luke warm.

This would rev 'em up:

the model that GM more-or-less promised U.S. enthusiasts – the Opel Insignia OPC, and it's an altogether more serious piece of kit. Rifle-bolt gearshift, seats by Channellock, snarlier 325-horsepower 2.8-liter V6 and a torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system add up to a massive personality shift for the better. The OPC feels something like a cut-rate Audi S4

Since it only posted today, it would have been impossible to include it in the Toyota thread.

Thank you for posting a current thread. Last time you posted about a new investigation about the Corvette, it was an article about a three-year old review that had been closed with no recall.

Only on this forum is 300K vehicles mentioned like it's as bad or worse than 830K vehicles, as with the Toyota investigation.

Ah, balance.

The investigation should be brought up here, but my hunch is that competitor's investigations involving as many or more vehicles, would never be if I didn't post them.

Then it would likely be over $40k, I'll take the RWD ATS. Buick just isn't going to sell many sport sedans to the affluent younger people they're marketing too. Most Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, BMW, VW etc. customers don't want a Buick. It will take quite a while for these people to come around.

IMO, traditional GM customers will just buy a Malibu or move up to the ATS. I see the regal stuck in the middle. Sales have been dreadful and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'd buy a Regal GS. I'd wait until I could find a used one though.

12 complaints for GM vs. 6 for Toyota, and NHTSA targets Toyota first.

Balance. Right.

Keep in mind all the numbers are preliminary. The TB clones (Envoy, Rainier, 9-7x) are not included, and could end up being.
