The Camry sticker price at the dealership is 26,216.00. I was thinking 23,000.00,22,000.00,or 21,000.00 for the XLE Camry. Does this sound like a good price? If not, what price should I present to the salesman..... Cliffy1 ,and ral2167, you guys were very helpful.... I'm thinking now ,and I'd rather get a a white XLE Camry because it costs less for insurance which I dont understand because it's the same car,but oh well.. I was told why the Gallery or Collectors Edition is more, but still dont get it.
Here's what's in the XLE Camry.... Value Package #2 which consist of: AM/FM/Cass/In-dash Cd changer. Leather shift knob. Power tilt/slide Moonroof with maplight. Side Airbags. Carpeted floor. Mats, and Cargo nets. Black mudguards in front and back. Sticker Price is: $26,216.00
What price can I present to the salesperson for this car?
like elgriton says, dont bet on anything lower than 24K even with rebates... for now. Maybe you could get it in the high 23K if you wait it out until the '02 models come in. But I dont get it guys... why not get an Accord in stead of the Camry for about 23K? Accords have a little bit of a stiffer ride, but handles better. You gotta remember, the current Accords came out a couple years later than the current Camrys and was designed to better the Camry.... Probably going to be the case with the '03 Accords vs. '02 Camrys.
I think you might want to crank your numbers into Edmunds' pricing guide and see what the invoice and incentives/rebates do for you in your area.
It looks like you have all the options and other details. Their number were "right on" for me back in April when I first looked ... i.e. compared exactly with my Credit Union's print out for invoice prices.
As other have suggested, the dealer's and competitor's stock will affect the negotiating to some extent. Otherwise, in your favor, I'm sure is that the dealers want to unload these '01's and make room for the '02's. Those suggested "on-line purchases" might be the way to go if you can't get a reasonable price at the dealer.
Edmunds claims their FMV prices are "fair" for the dealer and the purchaser. Maybe someone knows if the prices are pretty well up to date. I've not checked lately. I would have purchased on those numbers already if my "preference" had been available at the local dealerships.
Good luck ... oh yes, consider withholding any emotion when you "deal" on the lots ... until the dealing is done. :-)
The V6 Camry requires premium fuel to get the maximum horsepower. If you use regular, the engine will automatically compensate to prevent engine damage and pinging, but you get less power as a result.
i used 87 octane on the v6 solara i had-- it had plenty of pep-- don't be buying premium-- 87 octane is plenty good enough-- we're not driving on the indy speedway...
IF you take them that offer (the one your Mom ran out) and they don't show any interest then they must think that they can get more for it.
You might FAX the offer to dealers that are convenient ... call them up to get their FAX number and tell them what you're doing and give them your name (so they can connect with a serious contact). Let them know you are FAXing to several prospective dealers and ask them to respond with a written counter offer (FAX or EMail).
Let's see ... you may be wanting to ask for an "out the door" price that details all the expenses associated with the sale. Maybe someone else has some experiece with this but I would like to NOT get surprises after an offer gets me into a dealship.
I notice that several of dealers have email sales and perhaps that might be the way to go. I'm thinking about trying that as soon as the specs/options(preferences?) are posted for for the 2002's. I'm weary of dragging around to the lots and it's a bit late to be factory ordering a 2001.
My preference would be for what we call an LE, V6 w/at, Super White/Oak interior. Don't want the spoiler or moon/sun roof. But until the '02's are spelled out I can't really go further with this.
Guess the preferences from the dealers are already in ... if production is starting in a couple of weeks.
Good luck ... and let us know if you find a deal that works!
Hi Charles, I did check the incentives ,and rebates ,and my Mom told them about the rebates ,and incentives when she contacted these dealerships ,and no saleman want to give me a rebate or incentive... Furthermore, I was watching a movie that I taped over this past weekend ,and it went to commerical, and Toyota was advertised ,and it said that you could get a total savings of 2,250.00 on a Camry, visit your Toyota Dealership before this Sales Event ends July 9,2000. Rebates are out there ,and they're not expired, and there's a "Toyota Sales Event" and it's advertised and yet nobody wants to give a rebate,or incentive or 2,250.00 off the sticker price. Today my Mom and I are gonna go to the same dealership that we went to yesterday and the guy said that there are no rebates and there is. The reason why we are going to that dealership is because the two other dealerships that she called gave her a hard time about the price cause nobody wants to give a rebate or incentive... Another dealership that she talked to couldn't locate the car that he thought he could, but he could locate another, but it was in Indiana or somewhere like that ,and he wanted 2 or 3,000.00 extra for the effort. I called the same dealers she did ,but I called in the morning, and some gave me different information about the inventory they have, but I dont know why, maybe it's because I sound young, but I'm not, I'm 26 ,and I'm gonna be 27 in November, god I'm getting old.lol...
Anyhow no dealerships want to give rebates or incentives,or the 2,250.00 off of a Camry. Either they really did hurt this spring when nobody was buying cars cause of the economy or the dealerships that we've talked to are just plain greedy.. My Mom even called one dealership and asked if they had a white xle ,and they said "no",and said they know of two ,and they'll call and see if they can get either one ,and the place that they called was the place that I am going today to make an offer to the saleman, and he will not give up his white XLE Camry that he has,and neither will the other place, and said that "the car is gonna be sold at the dealership and end of story". So I guess we'll see what happens today at the dealership that I am going to... I'll know later if I have a White 2001 XLE Camry not...
I dont believe any of these salesmen, I call dealerships myself ,and ask... I'm gonna see what Spartan has just in case this salesman doesn't except the offer... My Mom even called the dealership that we are going to today and talked with someone else ,and made an offer, and the guy said that he'll have to talk it over with his boss, and the boss is the man is the salesman that we are gonna be making the offer to,anyway the boss refused it. Thank god, I dont get a new car every 2 or three years cause if I did ;then, I'd have an ulcer as big as a grapefruit...lol. Anyhow, I'll let you know what happens today... Thanks Charles! Courtney
That's an idea, but I dont know if that's gonna work either.... Read my post to cOke,and you'll understand why.. I'm ready to throw in the towel, and just go get a Ford Explorer because I'm sure I could get a better deal on that, that's what I wanted in the beginning ,but I didn't get it because of all the rollovers, and the reliablity isn't great.. I like Toyota Camrys, and I'm happy with the one I have now,and it's a 94.... I just dont know what I'm gonna do next as far as getting a 2001 Camry if this guy doesn't take the offer. I'm gonna tell him once my mom gives him the offer that he can take or leave it, that's the final offer, and it is a 2001.. I've got some serious thinking to if this saleman doesn't take the offer ,and I have a strong feeling that he wont take it.. I'll give you all a update, and I'll stay in touch with you guys when I do get a a 2001 Camry cause I love it in here. You are all soo nice and helpful...
Do you have a V6,or are you thinking of getting a v6 in a camry or what? :)Dont quote me on this, but I think the V6 on the Camrys are having problems with something that's I wont get a V6 if I can't find a 4 cylinder in the 2001 Camry, rather wait till I can find a 4 cylinder. Goodluck!
Hmmmm. Well no one can say you're not trying but I'm sure that IF they don't find buyers at THEIR price then they will show some interest in your offer.
Especially if they have not moved them as the end of the month approaches I expect they should start to try to work your deal somehow.
Oh yes, we've still got our '85 Camry ... and will keep it a bit longer! But I guess I'll trade in the 90 Mitsu LE, our "main" transportation.
When I bought the '85 I went out of town and ordered it through a dealer over 50 miles from here. He got exactly the car I wanted delivered from Japan in about 3 weeks. It was already in transit and all he had to do was request the vehicle to be forwarded on his dealership. Since you know the FMV of what you're trying to buy then you might look outside your immediate vicinity and see if anyone out there wants a quick collection of their holdback.
Lastly, one local dealer offered to have my preference "driven" in but the cost was to have been $300, not $2 or $3 grand!!! The car had already been driven to it's present site about 200 miles from here. I couldn't warm up to the idea back in April especially when he said I didn't have to take it if I didn't like it after it arrived.
After reading these posts it seems like we may need a "Dealing with the Dealer" group. (gee, I should check, maybe there is one.)
I recently bought my new LE V6 Camry on June 16th. At that time I check to see what Toyota had to offer and I only saw a $1000 cashback. Now after reading these posts I see there is a $1500(700 incentive+800cashback) rebate program, Edmunds says this was in effect since 6/1/01. I checked before buying my car and they only listed the $1000, also started at 6/1/01 to end in July. What am I missing? When did the $1500 pop up. And when did Edmunds misinformation get corrected. It seems Edmunds whole format for incentives has changed in the last three weeks. Please tell me what is going on here.
These are regional programs and are designed to allow Toyota to handle regional inventory issues. For instance, my dad in Northern CA just told me that there is a $1500 program on the V6 Camry plus a 4.9% APR. Here in VA, we only have $1000 OR 4.9% financing. It seems we don't have as bad an overstock situation as Northern CA.
Oh, in case you were wondering what the regional TDA (advertising) fees are used for, this is it. All rebates and incentives are paid from the TDA fund.
The current V6 is some heck of an engine, so I'm not sure what basis you have for not considering it. The 4cycl. pales in every aspect to the V6 with the exception of gas mileage which is nominal for the 4cycl. So take my advice and go for the V6 unless you're #1 concern is gas mileage. Regarding your inquiries with salesmen, they're just playing hardball with you. You have 2 things going against you when purchasing a car: 1. You're young in 'their' (most salesmen) mind, perhaps naive or uninformed as to the tactics of car buying; and 2. No offense, but you're female. These vultures...err, salesmen will swoop down and take you for a good ride . You need to be firm/assertive and be willing to cut them off at an instant if they wanna play games. Do all the pre-req homework and show them your calculations. I used edmunds with my XLE V6 purchases and itemize every costs down to available incentives/rebates and the salesperson couldn't argue with detail homework. Anyhow, g'luck .
Can you also tell me what the TDA is for Northern VA-Fairfax region. I was charged about $460, which I thought was a bit high, but have no way of confirming to be true charge, so I paid it. BTW, I paid $23100 out the door includes everything. The car is an LE V6 w/convenience package 3($173 inv.) and mud gaurds and the upgrade speakers, floormats included in the deal. Is this about average for this particular deal? Thanks.
I just bought an LE V6 and I don't know anything about TDA fees. Never even saw it on my invoice. Maybe they do that differently in Maryland. I paid about 22.5 for the car on the road. But I also got a student rebate. So I think that 23.1 is still a decent price.
Mine is an odd ball car because it has some of the frillies of a XLE (V6 wheels and wood-trim). Go figure. I was wondering if anyone else has a bluish gray interior. Or are all other gray interiors have blue in them. All the other cars I test drove had oak interior so I'm not sure if this is another oddity. Anyway, I absolutely love the car. I haven't had the car long, but I absolutely love the V6. It purrs on the road. Never get shift shock. Also, I was told by a mechanic that the V6 engines last longer than the V4. I'm not sure the basis of this, but I assume it's because there's less demand on the engine from heavy footed drivers like me.
You both live in the Central Atlantic Region for Toyota and the TDA fee here is 2.1% of "net net" invoice or roughly $450 on a V6 LE. This region is one of the higher ones in the country, but not the highest. That "honor" goes to Northern CA and the New York Region. Jeani, if you saw an actual invoice, it would have shown this. I've sold Toyotas here in VA for nearly 8 years now and have never seen an invoice without it.
Thai, when did you purchase your Camry? That figure seems fairly high to me unless you took the special financing instead of the rebate. It is about $600 over invoice which isn't disastrous unless you selected the rebate in which case you got taken to the cleaners.
I bought mine on June 16th. The invoice for this car with the package 3-$173, the upgrade speakers and mud guards another $60, with auto trans. and freight came to $21600 invoice, right? That is what I got when I printed it off Edmunds. Add $450 TDA, plus $100 processing and taxes tags and title $1150 comes to about $23,257. But the total cost only came to $23088. I must of added something by mistake, I don't have the buyers order in front of me. Then I forgot to include the $1000 cash back. Which brings the total to $22088, which was what we financed with 0 down at 7.5%. With the rebate I am right at invoice. I probably could've gotten a couple hundred under, but when I consisdered that they only had one LE V6 on the lot and with the color I wantedand I got the deal with little haggling, I figured It was a good deal. Wouldn't you agree? Thanks for confirming the TDA for me.
Here in Northern VA, the V6 is a bit hard to find unless you want the Collectors Edition so your price isn't all that bad. Based on an "out the door" figure of $23088 less a $1000 rebate, you paid $22343 for the car. Now, most dealers in VA have a processing fee that ranges between $154 and $288, so lets use $200 as the average. That puts the price at $22143. This car has a total invoice of $21759 which is $384 over invoice. Not too shabby. Tax is 3.17% (in Fairfax County) or $711.16 and tags are $36.50. This brings you to the $23088 less the rebate.
This is a good deal if the dealer treated you fairly.
I live in MD and I believe the tax is 5%, also the tags and title for three years in MD is around 135. This I believe will negat the $384 over invoice that you figured. Thanks for the clarification!
This brings me to a question that I will post over at the Sequoia Forum. Thanks alot.
I've been trying to figure out what the invoice price would be for the wood trim, alloy wheels that are on the XLE, carpeted trunk, cargo net, and the bulky arm rest cover. Cliffy, do you think you could help me out?
And I completely agree that the LE V6 is hard to find. I think I visited 6 dealerships at least twice each in the Baltimore-Washington area for 2 months, and found 3 of them. And the one I got was the only silver, Japanese made vehicle. A week before I found my car, I almost gave up by getting a gallery or collectors edition. I'm glad I waited an extra week. Some people like the two-tone. But it's just not me.
Thai, I think you got a great deal too. I remember a vehicle at carmax with the same options as yours and I think you got a better bargin! I would have gotten that car, but it wasn't silver.
I have a 4 cyl 1998 Camry lease with 31K miles. Will turn back in in August. I like the car - the 4 cyl seems to have plenty of power. Want to purchase (not lease) a 2001 and drive for 150K miles. Will the 4 cyl hold up? Is this extra $2000 or more for the 6 cyl worth it for long term reliability? What about the 15 inch versus 16 inch tires? Are the 16 inch tires worth the extra cost?
Just this morning, upon starting my 2000 XLE V6, it started to misfire and the Check Engine Light came on. It was absolutely fine when I parked it last night.
I will take it in tomorrow. I am kind of disappointed. 22800 miles, meticulously cared for, too.
I currently have an Accord EX that is leased. The lease is up on Sept. 23. I think I have decided on a Camry LE V6. One dealer that I talked with said a V6 might be hard to find especially in August or September since the plant was changing over in order to produce the new 2002, which (he said) would be out in August. Another dealer told me that the 2002 model was not going to be significantly different and they were not scheduled to be out until the end of the year and it wouldn't be difficult to find the car I wanted. I have noticed that the are not too many V6's on the lots. Should I be concerned about finding the car I want (LE V6, Silver, Sage Cloth, JBL speakers)? Should I be so concerned that I need to go ahead and ask a dealer to try to find the car I want and turn my car in early?
I got my car about a week ago. It took me 2 months, repeat visits to 6 dealerships and having them check around to find it. A silver, LE, V6. Of course, I also asked for it to be made in Japan. I don't think there's really a difference, but my Dad, the mechanic, told me there's a difference in the workmanship.
So there are still some out there. I'm thinking that if you ask them to find one, it may take a couple of months. But the dealership is going to want to sell you the car, so they'll most likely find one for you. In a couple of weeks, you'll be able to figure out if you like the 2002. And the rebates will probably be better for the 2001. I'm not sure, but I think someone on the camry maintainence msg board posted a pic of the 2002.
Sounds like I might need to go ahead and begin the search. I wanted to try to find a 2001 since so that I could take advantage of the low interest rate. I don't know if I want to take the chance and wait for a 2002 and possibly not like it and even if I did who knows what the interest rate would be. I have seen a couple of spy pics (including the one you referred to) of the 2002. I don't think I will be able to tell until I really see one on the road or on a lot. Then I am afraid it might be too late for a 2001, if I don't like it. I could always go back to an Accord but I drove a LE V6 yesterday and was impressed with the power and the ride. I thought about waiting for a 2002 Altima but a dealer told me yesterday the price was going to be around $32K. Anyway, what options did you get on your Camry and what did you end up paying (if you don't mind me asking). I want alloy wheels, JBL speakers, cloth interior. I thought a fair price would be around $22K without sales tax or the additional fees. Thanks for your help.
Well, I posted some info earlier. But as any new car owner, I love talking about my new "baby". It has auto tran, V6, vp#3 (which includes the JBL speakers), mud guards, wood-trim, alloy wheels (but are the alloy wheels on the XLE), an extra bulky arm rest, cargo net, carpeted trunk, and pin stripping. Overall, I like to think of it as the XLE wanna be.
I got $1400 in rebates. So I ended paying $22.5K on the road (includes 5% Maryland tax, $132 for tags, and any other fees). Someone on this msg board (Thai) paid $22.1K on the road (also from Maryland) for a car with options similar to the ones you want minus the alloy wheels. I hope this helps.
Inventories vary by region. Here in VA, they are pretty hard to get. My dad lives in Northern California and bought an XLE this weekend and had no problems finding his. In fact, they have higher rebates for the V6 in NoCal than they do on the 4 cylinder models. As I speak, my new car manager is on the phone with our District Manager trying to work him for more V6 Camrys and isn't getting very far.
Got a call from the dealer about the check engine light (post # 929). All the fuel injectors have to be replaced under warranty due to a "manufacturing defect". They will also put in new strut mounts to prevent creaking noises (TSB on this). Will take two days to get the parts.
All in all, this Camry has been more trouble that my wife's Dodge Grand Caravan, and seems to be assembled with a general lack of attention to quality. The seats have become saggy and uncomfortable after just 18 months and nearly 23K miles. Numerous creaks and rattle from the front passenger seats and dash area.
I drive conservatively and maintain meticulously. I intended to keep this car for 10yr/200K miles, but am now rethinking this. Probably will not get a Toyota, and this kinda surprises me.
I must say I am disappointed. I think that the current Camry is as bad as many other makes that don't have the reputation for quality. I think Toyota is getting complacent, and I am sure that market forces will catch up with them in due course.
Isn't the Highlander pretty much what you want? Its pretty darn close considering you can get a 4cly in 2x4 or 4x4. The gas mileage is pretty decent. With the V6 engine you give up a little on mpg be gain a whole lot on power.
I know exactly what you mean! Ever since Toyotas are made in the US, quality has gone down a good bit. The only saving grace that Toyota has is that they use better technology and in most cases better quality materials and parts than most. My new Camry does suffer some quality issues, but they are not that major. The biggest, is the slightly misaligned trunk. What is going on with American workers these days? But I will tell you what, I also have a 90' Camry and a 94' Accord, that that Accord; which is supposed to be the next best thing to Camrys, is second rate to my 90' camry with 250K miles. What other choices are there out there? Not much! I can live with the Camrys problems as long as there engine are bullet proof and they keep running for 200-300K. Besides where would I prefer to have my car assembled? Mexico, South America, I'd walk before I travel that route. The way I see it, I don't have $50,000 to blow on a Lexus or Mercedes yet, so I'll take what I got. I hope you get your Camry fixed what ever the problem is. If not, then we are all in trouble.
I am will puchase a 2001 sometime within the next month or so. One of the options is the Toyo guard protection group, which includes paint sealant, sealant cleaner, undercoating/sound shield and glass etch theft deterent. Since I am not a auto genius, could someone please help me out and tell me what all of this is and if it is worth getting at a price of $619? Thanks.
I did get the Toyo Guard package for my Corolla but I didn't get the theft deterrent option. Since my Corolla is Indigo Ink or dark blue, I thought that by putting the paint sealant on top of the undercoat would protect my paint for a longer time. I can say that I've also prevented a few deep scratches with dogs jumping up on the driver's door to come and greet me.
I also got the undercoating option which is part of the package, and I believe it's worth it if you live in colder climates where they put salt on the roads during Winter. I'm not sure if it really soundproofs the car better though.
If you do opt for the package, I would try bargaining for it. $619 sounds like a lot. I paid around $600 CDN for it.
I would pass all the way around. It isn't needed. Ive never had a Camry's frame or undercarriage rust out on me, ever. Paint sealant, added profit for dealership. You could do just as well by taking a trip to Trak Auto. Paint sealant WILL NOT PREVANT SCRATCHES! If this is what they claim, they were not being truthful or they may be uninformed themselves. Alot of salespeople sometime puff claims mistakenly. If anything it was designed to prevent stains and acid rain damage. But this is only my opinion and experience.
Think i'm gonna wait for the 2002 Camry to come out because I dont want a car that's gonna be considered outdated in a few weeks.... I read the posting about the new Camry, and I think I'll like it. I was gonna post a posting for gagirl, but I read her posting again thank god, I was gonna give her advice about waiting for a 2002. Not awake yet this a.m.LOL
Do you know about what number the posting was that had info about the 2002 Camry? I am at work and don't have a lot of time to search. I thought you or someone might could get me there a little quicker. Thanks
Some people like this stuff. Others don't. Be careful when negotiating for this, because there is a hidden holdback on this product. The invoice reads something like $350 for it, but the dealership gets a rebate on it. The real cost is something like $160 and it might be worth that.
Just to add something new to the paint protection debate, I want to tell ya'll something I learned yesterday. We are looking at offering spray-in bed liners on our trucks. I asked the company owner if they needed to scuff the paint to get the liner to adhere to the paint. His answer was that they didn't unless we had applied our paint sealant. "That stuff is really hard and it doesn't melt. We've got to hit the bed with sandpaper to get through it before the liner will adhere to the paint."
I was a bit shocked at this. I had been told of how hard this stuff was, but I didn't realize it was that strong. It leads me to think that there could be some value for some people. Guys like me that are lazy and don't wax the car every 2 weeks could probably benefit the most.
Me too. I am waiting for 2002 Camry come out but I think 2002 Nissan Altima is my first choice, 2002 Camry is 2nd choice. I am gonna test drive both of them before I buy one. If you like, you can take a look at 2002 Altima at www.freshalloy.com. They have a lot of info about it. The price should be $25,000 tops.

Value Package #2 which consist of:
AM/FM/Cass/In-dash Cd changer.
Leather shift knob.
Power tilt/slide Moonroof with maplight.
Side Airbags.
Carpeted floor.
Mats,and Cargo nets.
Black mudguards in front and back.
Sticker Price is: $26,216.00
What price can I present to the salesperson for this car?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I did check the incentives ,and rebates ,and my Mom told them about the rebates ,and incentives when she contacted these dealerships ,and no saleman want to give me a rebate or incentive...
The reason why we are going to that dealership is because the two other dealerships that she called
gave her a hard time about the price cause nobody wants to give a rebate or incentive...
Either they really did hurt this spring when nobody was buying cars cause of the economy or the
dealerships that we've talked to are just plain greedy..
My Mom even called one dealership and asked if they had a white xle ,and they said "no",and said they know of two ,and they'll call and see if they can get either one ,and the place that they called was the place that I am going today
to make an offer to the saleman, and he will not give up his white XLE Camry that he has,and neither will the other place, and said that "the car is gonna be sold at the dealership and end of story".
Courtney
I like Toyota Camrys,and I'm happy with the one I have now,and it's a 94....
Good luck!
Oh, in case you were wondering what the regional TDA (advertising) fees are used for, this is it. All rebates and incentives are paid from the TDA fund.
Thai, when did you purchase your Camry? That figure seems fairly high to me unless you took the special financing instead of the rebate. It is about $600 over invoice which isn't disastrous unless you selected the rebate in which case you got taken to the cleaners.
This is a good deal if the dealer treated you fairly.
This brings me to a question that I will post over at the Sequoia Forum. Thanks alot.
I will take it in tomorrow. I am kind of disappointed. 22800 miles, meticulously cared for, too.
others might say different--- just my opinion
Should I be concerned about finding the car I want (LE V6, Silver, Sage Cloth, JBL speakers)?
Should I be so concerned that I need to go ahead and ask a dealer to try to find the car I want and turn my car in early?
So there are still some out there. I'm thinking that if you ask them to find one, it may take a couple of months. But the dealership is going to want to sell you the car, so they'll most likely find one for you. In a couple of weeks, you'll be able to figure out if you like the 2002. And the rebates will probably be better for the 2001. I'm not sure, but I think someone on the camry maintainence msg board posted a pic of the 2002.
I was gonna post a posting for gagirl, but I read her posting again thank god, I was gonna give her advice about waiting for a 2002. Not awake yet this a.m.LOL
