They claim it boosts horsepower and gives better gas mileage. I wonder if it really works.
I wouldn't buy it again.
300M is an awesome car. Most people never have any problems with its transmission. And as for the power of the engine - I regularly beat many sport-wannabe sedans and hang in there with cars like Mazda RX-7 while travelling at +/- 100MPH.
What performance improvement was noticed; was driveability affected; did gas
mileage improve?
Also noticing a problem with my transmission in the last couple of days....
the 2-1 downshift as I come to a stop can be felt(it's rough) & when I take my foot off the
gas to just creep forward a little, the car has this jerking motion happening.
Ocurrs when car is fully warmed up. Anyone encountered this with their GS?
My car is a '98 with 60k miles.

If you do place SLP please change the exhaust tip. I went with a SS 3x5 Oval Tip...mainly due to Tolan's GS_Plans. If your looking to Oval Tip:

The best addition to improve MPG has been the addition of a K&N filter and pulley!!!
Good luck with YOUR GS plans
Adios,

AS a sidelight, these last two weeks while on vacation I was driving a Lincoln LS V 8 Sport. It's a well put together, quick, tight car. However, I was glad to get back to the GS. It's more comfortable, roomy and just as quick; though the rwd LS handles much better and feels much more secure on the road. For the $10,000 price difference, I'd take the GS anytime!
"I installed a MSP Cold-air intake kit not too long ago with the big K&N cone filter. The kit was installed for performance, not MPG, but after running a few tankfuls now, I've discovered that better gas mileage was icing on the cake! I'm now averaging 26.5 - 27mpg"
Did the intake kit come from the K&N people? Was the installation complex? Does the installation effect your warrenty?
Thanks
jack
It affects your warranty only if your dealer or GM can prove the warranty issue was caused by the/or result of the new intake. In that case, you may be in for a battle with GM.

However, when questioned, each dealer will have their own interpretation....you know how that goes...
Anyone have trouble with the front doors sticking? Mine rub at the very top corner where the trim is. I lube it with a little oil and they open much better. Don't remember seeing that mentioned here but then I haven't been on this board much lately.
Like I said before, I would contact your Internet Service Provider and the authorities, including the FBI about this. Attaching a porn site to a web link for car enthusiasts is going WAY over the line of taste, and may have broken several local, state and federal laws.
By the way, anyone trying the link should be prepared to have lots of unsolicited junk sent to your browser. This happened to me until I shut everything down and rebooted. Once again, apparently it is NOT rcarboni's fault, but the unsolicited links are still somehow embedded in that address.
I hope you accept my apology.

Yesterday, I was in another board for Lexus. I noticed there that they had a DIRECT link on EVERY message there that said something like- Report this poster to the host. Any chance that could happen here? Probably not, because just trying to get the name of the Zaino topic changed seemed to cause a lot of confusion. Just thought I'd ask anyway.

Put this minor incident in perspective...
Don't leave, just yet.
As I said, when I wrote the earlier messages, I was unaware that anyone could manipulate a link other than the originator. I hope this is past....I'm always willing to listen to another Buick owner and hopefully learn something.
As for Edmunds barring you, well, I hope they reconsider in light of the link being manipulated without your knowledge or permission. I knew that entire web sites have been hacked into and changed (often in a pornographic way) but I didn't know it could be done with a link. This is starting to seem very similar to what happens when someone steals your checkbook or credit card number.
Nels, NO you didn't want to see it. My computer was VERY messed up until I completely rebooted. I'm waiting to see how many cookies were sent or received by the pornographers, and how much unsolicited e-mail I'll be getting in the next few weeks.
And now back to talking about some of the best cars on the road.....Buicks!
Joe
I know that United Airlines did not set up their site to do this. Being in the software development business, I know that calls to a URL can be intercepted & rerouted to another URL AND that some web sites agree to 'automatic links' like this as a form of revenue to keep their sites going. One of these scenarios is what is happening. In the first case, it is not the fault of the site/URL or a person posting a site/URL. It is the fault of a pretty smart hacker working for Marketing/Advertising companies.
It is a shame that as person such as RCARBONI gets banned from a forum and made to feel like a criminal due to a misunderstanding about technology.
Check out the rest of these pics...you'll be the judge!:

Hope Buick doesn't do it.. Looks like it's going the way of the Azteck.
First, if any of you have experienced that thing that happens when porn windows keep opening and opening no matter what you do - until you shut down and reboot - you know how maddening that can be. And in some respects, it is scary, because someone or some thing has taken control of what you thought (hah, yeah right!) you controlled.
Second, anything can happen with a website after any of us have saved a link to it. What I'm saying is that I could find a site today that looks useful and good, save the link, and maybe a few months from now remember it, and offer it to someone else. Meanwhile, maybe the site has totally changed hands and changed how it does things.
Now, let's say you are responsible for managing website discussions and lots of understandably upset folks are emailing you with legitimate complaints about what happened to them when they clicked on a link within one of the discussions on your website.
Well, you have to act quickly to take care of the problem in order to keep even more members from experiencing the effects of the popup porn window monster.
What I gather is that is exactly what happened. We had to act quickly because many folks were having legitimate and horrible problems with a link that was posted.
However, it now seems clear to both Dana and myself that rcarboni did not intentionally create this situation. Indeed, he has been a good and reliable community member in Town Hall for quite some time now.
Mistakes can happen. Websites can change. Initial reactions to serious problems can be rethought and re-addressed.
And Dana and I both would like you to know that rcarboni has been reinstated and personally invited to come back to this discussion and to Town Hall.
We appreciate everyone's understanding that the goal here was to protect our Town Hall community from experiencing something that is aggravating, frightening, and should NEVER occur to anyone here. We also appreciate rcarboni's explanations and hope that everyone else here does as well.
So... With all of that said, it is important that we get back on topic. If anyone has anything further to say about this incident, please feel free to email either myself or Dana. We'll be glad to discuss this with you off-line, but this topic has been disrupted for too long now with this issue.
Thanks - as I say, Dana and I both appreciate your understanding. And we would very much appreciate no more conversation here about the problem - email us if you'd like.
(fastdriver - please email either myself or Dana with the details of what you are describing - we'll be glad to look into it.)

Thanks for your interest and willingness to share. Unfortunately, this is a funny/sometime messed up world we live in ---- gotta make the best of it. Move on and don't look back!
I'd like to call it the smiling fish:-0) OOps better watch out I may buy one someday!
You've been in TH long enough to know how crazy things get here sometimes. Don't let it get to you. We've all made mistakes here from time to time and know that there is always someone waiting in the wings to pounce on you. Just forget it. Keep sharing info here with everyone who appreciates your help. The Hosts know who the troublemakers are and I'm sure you're NOT one of the ones on their list! ;-))

Rcarboni, if you are ever in San Antonio, let me know and I'll buy you lunch.
As for the Regal, I can't get over the power of the 3.8 supercharged engine. If you want a laugh or two, go over to the Oldsmobile Intrigue forum and listen to the thrashing those guys give the 3.8 engine. They think their 3.5s walk on water because they have dual overhead cams. Wait til they get the repair bill when their chains or belts get stretched and need to be replaced!
Maybe when rcarboni and I are going to lunch, we can find an Intrigue owner at a redlight, turn off the traction control on my '99 GSE and blow his doors off. When we slow down and let him catch up, I'll give him directions to the local Buick dealer.
Joe
I do not think that the overhead shaft engines are inherently less reliable than the rod ones. Belts need replacement every 60k miles or so, but the Intrigue engine have a chain, not a belt. Chains do not stretch, only wear, and serve much more longer. I believe, the 3.8l engine also have a chain inside.
It is better to compare Intrigue with Regal LS, Gran Prix GT, etc. Intrigue accelerates a bit slower in city (up to 30 mph or so), but much faster on highway and rural roads. I saw Intrigues passing other cars - uphill on highways, as well as on the two-lane rural roads. Rather impressive.
Intrigue uses the regular gas, and is a bit more economically than GS. About $200 economy per year with the current prices. And, depending on what you prefer, Intrigue have more stiff suspension than Regal.
Personally, I prefer the look and comfort of my Regal to its corporate brethren. Additionally, my daily commute is short and mostly through city. However, I would recommend Intrigue on the technical merits for long highway commutes, as well as for rural roads.
air-conditioning. It takes some time but the car will eventually overheat. Any ideas? I also have asked the local dealership to change the supercharger oil on my car which has 73,000 miles and I am told this is not necessary.
Sean
I agree I'm not so sure about these new engines just yet. Why do I want an engine that revs higher? That just means it's going to wear faster! I also don't put much stock in hp numbers. Torque is the real indicator. It needs to be consistent across the rpm band. A torque curve that needs to build is wasted time getting to peak hp.
When comparing the 3.5 to the N/A 3.8, these are very similar engines. So similar in fact, I don't see the reason why GM felt the need to develop the 3.5. There is no advantage that I can see. I can only guess it had to do with emissions or marketing. If I were to choose the better engine for daily driving in the red-light to red-light race, the N/A 3.8 would be the winner. If I were driving on open highway, the 3.5 would probably get the nod. This is assuming of course that the tranny/gearing was optimized for the particular engine.
When comparing the 3.5 to the SC 3.8, I'm sorry, but there is simply no contest. The head-snapping reaction of the 3.8 is just too much fun. I've owned muscle cars in the past, including a '67 GTO 400ci 4bbl, that were not as quick or as fun as the GS. Comparing the SC 3.8 to the 3.5 is like comparing the LS-6 to the SC 3.8. It's just another level of performance.
If you take a look back in the Intrigue forum, I sounded a lot like you. Before I made my final purchase I test drove a Regal GS then an Intrigue back-2-back. Although the Regal has more power, not just on paper but on the street too, I was amazed at how similar their performance is. Now that I drive the 3.5 everyday I can truthfully say that if they do the new engine the Regal is expected to get, you won't be disappointed. With more displacement and improvements over the 3.5, I'd go out on a limb and say you wouldn't even miss it.
I thought the red-light race would suffer in the 3.5. I was wrong. Rent an Intrigue (make sure it has PCS--the transaxle ratio is 3.29 for PCS, 3.05 w/o PCS) for a weekend. You'll see the future for Buick powertrains is still bright.
Your overheating IS likely caused by one of the cooling fans on the radiator not coming on at all, or not coming on soon enough. If the Regal's ECM is programmed like most other GM FWD cars, one or both of the cooling fans should come on at low speed ANYTIME the A/C compressor is running. This is to protect the compressor as well as to keep the car from overheating. When the coolant's temperature reaches a predetermined point (usually around 210-220 degrees) one or both of the fans should go to high speed.
If your fans are not running, here's a simple checklist:
1. Check all connections at the fan to make sure they didn't vibrate loose or have a bad connector. Be careful while doing this on a hot engine--those fans are close to the exhaust manifold. If loose, take them completely apart and look for dirt and/or moisture. If they are present, spray both sides of the connector with WD-40 or similar product and reassemble WITH THE ENGINE OFF.
2. Good connections? Then check the fan fuse on the fuse block. Don't remember where it is on the Regal and I don't have the service manual here with me. It is likely on the fuse block inside the car, but could be located in the engine compartment. If bad, replace it.
3. Good fuses? Then try tapping one or both fan motors with a steel tool like a ratchet. If the fan suddenly comes on, you have a "dead spot" in that fan's motor. Replace the motor.
If all of these steps still do not get the fan motors working, you either have a bad sensor or a problem with the ECM. Unless you are mechanically inclined and can follow a wiring diagram, I'd recommend having it diagnosed by a shop that does A/C work.
If your car is overheating, I'd recommend getting this fixed soon. Hot engines on 100 degree summer days tend to blow their head gaskets, warp their heads or worse. An A/C system running without the fans can build pressure inside the compressor approaching 500 PSI, which can blow your compressor internally, a hose, the condensor or the evaporator.
Good luck!
Joe
I do think the Intrigue as a total package has some advantages over the GS including handling. My test drives likened the handling of the Intrigue to the Maxima, while the GS felt like a bigger car with less response. I know there are suspension upgrades available, and I'd like to try these some day. Until then, I'll enjoy the straight-line raw power!
No way an Intrigue will beat a Regal GS in a flat out drag to 60.
Are you going to check out the new Max when it comes out? I've been wondering about how it will perform now that they've upped the power. Output looks close to the Regal. Would be nice to know how it compares. Maybe you'll let us know.
I'd do it myself. But at 6'8" Maximas are the equivalent of sardine cans.
Your Regal replaces it.
The styling of the Maxima has always disgusted me. For as much as the performance is there, they really need to work on the design. I'd also rather see them bring back the Z, and stop trying to pretend that the Max is some contender in the sports car arena. However, I do appreciate that they keep other makers questing for more power in the sedan lines.
teo,
Sorry, that wasn't me with the lemon Intrigue. I had considered the Olds, but at the time the Regal incentives were too good to pass up, and that was what eventually made the decision easy.
I just hope GM doesn't bow out of the sedan power struggle. With so many new, powerful models coming from the import crowd (Lexus, Acura, etc.), it would be nice to know that you could still get the power and reliability for up to $20K less for a simple sacrifice of trendiness and gadgetry.
Nice to see you're still lurking.
Just so you know. GM bought back my 2000 Impala LS back in April and gave me a brand new 2001 Impala LS with 4 miles on the odo.
The difference between both cars is like night and day.
The difference between the Regal and the
Intrigue has also been like night and day.
No problems with the Regal (well except the
dash rattle in the winter).
Huge quality contrast.
Amazing "the General" could have two cars
so much the same, yet so different.
* Never buy anything below the midsize range
* Stick to W and H body cars
* Never buy a first year GM model car or truck
* If buying W bodies, stick to ones made in Canada such as the Regal/Impala/Montecarlo (Intrigue/Grand Prix are made in Fairfax, KS a UAW plant)
* The H bodies are made in the Orion plant but they are good cars.
Is it me or is it that the Canadian GM products are better bolted than the ones made in the U.S.?
You could also have a defective radiator thermostat that's causing the overheating.
teo-
"Is it me or is it that the Canadian GM products are better bolted than the ones made in the U.S.?"
Could have something to do with the unions or pride of workmanship?
fastdriver
I have had a lot of problems from Gm products that were manufactured in Indiana...and almost none for the one that was built in Canada....coincidental? I doubt it.
