I think you represent less than 1% of the LS owners that actually care about being able to open the trunk after coasting to a stop. I know your in a small % because you own a manual. And virtually no one agrees with you that it is a defect. I think its a good safety feature.
If you don't like it, you can always sell the car and find some other vehicle to nit pick about. Basically, I am saying, you can express your opinion, but you are inviting others to try and agree with you and so far, none have. Well, maybe one who actually validated your claim, but I don't know if that other post really cares to get it fixed or would rather just not perform the behavior.
I used to think that questions were answered here that can help the general LS community...not pointless arguments about who is right or wrong about a car trunk...If anyone other than the two trunk guys has any help for my post #3053 I would greatly appreciate it...
I would hope the rolling stops under discussion won't include a need to do any steering since when you pull the key out (at least on my vehicles) the steering column locks. Why do we do such things anyway? That said, my best friend when I was a tad younger used to drive a '47 Chrysler New Yorker. The emergency brake mechanism was actually connected to a drum and shoe system that was attached to the driveshaft rather than the actual rear brake shoes. When that brake was on, *nothing* moved. Our idea of fun was to come careening into the local drivein restaurant, identify where we wanted to park, turn off the engine, and coast into the parking slot and then, at the proper time (better if a waitress was anywhere near), vigorously apply the emergency brake. The wheels would stop dead in their tracks but the body would continue on it's merry way lurching what seemed to be a rather long distance forward while rising up about 6 inches because it was so softly sprung. I'm sure it wasn't helping the suspension any but what fun to watch people's expressions when they saw something happening that they knew wasn't quite right...
The dealer told me that lincoln sell will not fit because of the air dams on the side of my beautiful new car! Can anyone out there help me find front and rear mud guards that will fit my beautiful new car that is just awesome I had just had the car for two days and want to protect this wonderful car as much as I can! Thanks, fancy
I'm not familiar with the special edition, but assume you're talking about some kind of ground effects package. Do your tires stick out past the bodywork? If not, maybe you don't need them, that is, they wouldn't do you any good.
Two days? And you have time to sit at your computer? I almost violated my personal rule against eating in the car because I couldn't stand to leave it alone long enough for a meal the first couple days.:) Enjoy.
At 1:00 PM today (6/13), I checked this forum to read today's messages. The display showed that the last message was #3030 at was entered at 10:48 AM on 6/12.
When I checked at 5:20 PM, there were now 25 messages entered between 10:48 AM, 6/12 and 1:00 PM, 6/13. Has anyone else seen this large anomily? or are the messages not available until they are reviewed????
I haven't noticed the trans cover being hot, but I haven't thought about it either. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go for a ride tomorrow. I don't have any mountains nearby, but I'm sure I can generate some heat.
I noticed that when I turn off the ignition with the radio on, it stays on! I cannot turn on the radio when the car is off though. Has anyone else experienced this? Can't think of why this would have been done by design.
Had my first experience with ATS yesterday. Was going down a dirt/gravel road that was extremely muddy due to torrential rain and was like driving on grease. The LS had just started to go sideways when the ATS light came on and the car straightened itself.
I guess I was skeptical about how the Advace Trac would work - I must say I am now very impressed!
The Audi A6 4.2 is quite expensive. In fact its the most expensive version of the A6 (has the V8 engine). Lot's more power than either the LS8 or the BMW 530. Glad you got a favorable lease rate though, I'm sure you'll enjoy the car.
Had you considered the A6 2.7T or 2.8? Those variants are more similar to the LS8 and the 530 you compared.
Congratulations! I am guessing the Audi was 10-15k more than the Lincoln but they are beautiful. I spent some time trying out an A6 prior to deciding on the LS. The 4.2 was not available at the time and the 2.8 just didn't cut it. Audi does know how to do interiors, though!!
Buddy, I think this is a bug in the radio control software. This happens to me occasionally. I think it occurs when you open the driver's door and turn the key off in quick succession. The radio stays on but will turn itself off after a while. You can turn it off manually or you can reinsert the key, turn the ignition to "on" without starting, and turn it off again.
If you find a permanent fix to this, please report it here.
Just wanted to check in and report on gas mileage......30% city 70% freeway.......1000 miles on my LS8 Sport Automatic..........18.8 mpg. After driving the car for about a month now I have a wish list for Lincoln....1) A-little deeper glove box (the one between the front seats), 2) Upgrade the speakers 3) On the message center I would rather have the status of gallons versus miles. So far the car has lived up to not only the advertising but also this message board....Fun to drive, smooth, and in my opinion a real good addition and milestone for Lincoln.
I think he is referring to the normal operation. If you have the radio on when you turn off the ignition, it will stay on until one of the doors is opened. This is normal. Joelincoln is pointing out the case where I have seen similar. If you do as he says and the radio stays on after you open the door, you can just push the volume knob to turn it off.
Respectfully? Save it. Doesn't sound like it to me. Sounds more like belligerent *dis*-respect. 2nd time you've attacked me this way on this board. What's your problem? You got a problem with me, don't tie up this board with it.
Is there anyone else on this board who thinks I just 'nit pick' the LS? Anybody else wanna advise me to sell my car? Anyone think these are 'respectful' statements?
I won't argue with you. It's pointless since you choose to ignore info that doesn't fit your view. I will say that your statements about the % of LSs this applies to and your statement that 'virtually no one agrees with me' are both based only on ignorance. And both are mathematically and statistically wrong. The data to support my statements is plainly found on this board, by those with open minds.
Other folks who agreed or disagreed with me on this trunk issue were respectfully stating their opinion. You were just on the attack. I don't need your kind of respect. Please just ignore my messages, as I suggested to you before. And perhaps, try to follow your own holier-than-thou advice you posted on the Hyundai Santa Fe board.
Alphanstein is correct in that the radio will keep playing after ignition is off until the door is open OR until the programed time to automatically turn it off. (Can't remember how long it will play. Perhaps 5 min?)
"retained accessory power?"...my Sable can work the power windows for 10 min after turning off the key, but as soon as I open a door it cuts the power...could your radio be part of a similar package???
Alphanstein is correct in that the radio will keep playing after ignition is off until the door is open OR until the programed time to automatically turn it off. (Can't remember how long it will play. Perhaps 5 min?)
My LS will be off the train next week sometime, but I do have one concern. When I had my first car, a 1980 Mercury Capri, I would get better acceleration when I turned the AC off. When I testdrove the LS, it did not exhibit this behavior. Well, I can see Ford saying that it ain't designed to work this way. However, I've been doing this (on occasion, not every time for sure) until the Capri was ready for the scrapheap. I remember my dad doing it too. (Perhaps where I learned it?) Heck, turning off the AC would increase our 0-60 times from 12 seconds to 10 or 11 seconds.
Therefore, I'd say it's a defect. After all, since the AC takes some juice to operate, shouldn't it accelerate better with it off? Isn't it a bit hard to argue the converse to that?
Under wide-open throttle, the air-conditioning compressor on the LS cuts out, and this is a designed-in feature. I don't know if its purpose is to eliminate parasitic losses, save the stress on the compressor, aid fuel economy, or a combination of the above, but that's what it does.
This might explain what you felt (or, rather, didn't feel.) I certainly wouldn't classify it as a defect, but that's just my opinion.
O.k. Let me get this straight, If I am in a full on throttle chase scene like the one in RONIN with my LINCOLN LS Protection Package with Bullet Proof windows, In Arizona at 115 Degrees, I would be baking correct? The compressor would be off the whole time correct, or at least most of the time?
Just wanted to make sure. I know it will help me when I get on the onramp though on the Freeway..
What time zone are you in? The times you see here are Pacific time. Does that explain it?
No, the messages here are not held for review. If they were, some of the bickering you see here might never see the light of day. ;-)
Whether your browser's cache is involved would depend on several factors - how you entered the page, how the cache was set up, and most importantly if you were viewing the page for the second time - seems unlikely to me that you would have been viewing a cached page, but it is possible.

Thanks Fizdc for gettting back to me...I was almost going to leave this board for lack of response. Is Brian still monitoring this board? ...cause it looks like the "hot heads" are on the prowl again and would rather throw verbal arrows at one another than help someone who has a question.
Well I appreciate your response back...let me know if your tranny housing plate heats up ..kind of like a few members on this board..hee hee!
Let me be among the 1% that agrees with heyjewel 100%. It's obviously a bug. Not being able to open the trunk remotely when the car is sitting in the driveway is NOT a safety feature. It's a pain in the rear. It should never do that, regardless of anything that the driver may have done. The problem is obvious: A flag is set when the car is in motion that disables the remote trunk release. When the vehicle stops, the computer resets the flag. When you turn on the ignition it also resets the flag. If you turn off the vehicle before it stops, it doesn't get a chance to reset the flag so the remote trunk release doesn't work. The other way to do it would be to check the vehicle speed each time, but that may not be possible or desirable when the ignition is off. You could also check to see if the ignition is off and allow the remote release, but that also yields the possibility of the trunk opening while coasting with the ignition off. But if you're doing that then you have bigger problems to worry about.
It's easy to understand how this happened (from a software development standpoint) and it's not a big deal. It probably isn't high on the priority list of things to be fixed, but if nobody reports it then it will never be fixed. Doesn't sound like a nitpick to me.
Yeah, I'm still here. Listening to Bill Engval sing the theme song to this board.
I know I'm going out on a limb here and no insult or sling intended at anyone, just an observation or two. Patient: Doctor, my eye hurts when I do this. Doctor: Don't do that. On both instances the solution is totally preventable and doesn't require much work on anyone's part. If the trunk lock doesn't unlock because you like to turn off the ignition while you are still rolling, don't do that. An extra second to stop isn't going to kill you.
If you think the car has a defect because there doesn't appear to be an appreciable difference in power when you floor it compared to manually turning off the A/C turn it off manually if that's what gets your jollies off.
Everything in life is not perfect. Things happen. Things like this is why we can't start lawnmowers without fifteen different safety interlocks and why stepladders have more warnings than steps.
If this is all anyone has to worry about, thank your lucky stars. If you like to look for flaws you'll find them no matter where you look.
Personally, I'd rather focus on the big picture and not sweat the small stuff, but then again that's me.
I was not trying to attack you and forgive me if you took it that way. I was merely trying to express my opinion of the situation much like you two are free to express yours. Take it how you may though.
Hey Brian!... Well it's been 5 mo. since I got my LS V8 and it really does get better the more I drive it!
I finally had to relinquish my LS to my wife for a trip to Sacramento today...(I took the 99 Lincoln Continental to work...and it was like night and day. The Continetal bobbed and bounced over the mountains and I felt every lb. of it's large frame trying to go around the curves! (I never used to notice till I started zooming around in the LS)
I heard that Lincoln is coming out with supercharged engine in the LS sometime in 03' did I hear wrong? any site stories on this?
On another note...Lincoln's 0.0% interest campaign must be hitting BMW right where they live. They released a rebuttal commercial to it today on the radio...totally lame. It had a desparation air to it, ballyhoing their own great interest rates (which they never seemed to mentioned for comparison (maybe cause there isn't anything lower than 0)...Just wished I had waited another 2 months before I got my lease at 3.5%...oh well!
Appreciate any knowledge on the supercharger thing...
Brian: You say "If you like to look for flaws you'll find them no matter where you look." implying that I was scouring the LS looking for something to [non-permissible content removed] about. This is far from the truth. Here's what happened:
I shut my car off, got out, pressed the key fob and the trunk would not open. Tried the dash button with the same result. So are you saying you (and alpha) think this is nitpickin and purposely lookin for flaws??? Would you have said "Well, I'm sure the all-knowing Jac Nasser has a good reason for not letting me open my trunk just now, so I'll just forget about it."??
Not being a Nasser sycophant (or fan for that matter), this bothered me and so the next time it happened I figured out what was happening and reported it to the board. Isn't that what this freakin forum is all about??? Why has my simple report of this 'feature or bug' depending on which camp you're in, caused such a ruckus? You've already said you don't think it's a problem and I accepted that. Why jump back in? Shall I (we) pass our findings thru you and alphanstein in the future to see if they're worth mentioning to the rest of the folks?
And Jeff: Sorry, but I think your 'apology' is FOS. Your original message said only one thing about the dead trunk issue "I think it's a nice safety feature." **All** the rest of your message was about ME and what I could do.** And when you end your mea culpa with "Take it how you may though" that does more to indicate to me where you're coming from than anything else.
And as far as interlocks on lawnmowers and warnings on ladders, those things are there to protect people who think it's a safety feature when a car won't allow you to electronically open it's trunk when the car is stopped. Anyone who thinks that has a screw loose. And it ain't in the trunk.
Finally, I can't believe how many people didn't recognize txmxman's msg as sarcasm aimed at me. Perhaps that's why alphanstiens original BS was ignored as well.
This whole discussion was civil and just about to end when alphanstein jumped in with his suggestions for me to sell my car. I had to respond to his crap and then billincal got his undies in a bunch because no one was paying attention to him then txmxman tosses his brain onto the fire and now et tu, Brian? Yeah, I'm angry, because all this BS over a simple thing.
To paraphrase a great American philosopher: "Can't we all just get along?" and allow people to report what they find without passing judgement or suggesting they sell their car if they don't like it?
I wasn't able to generate an uneven amount of heat. The area seemed warmer than the rest of the interior, but nothing alarming. Again I don't have any mountains (of any size) nearby. Sunday I head to the beach, a 9 hour ride, I'll post if I find anything new. Sorry I couldn't help
I do not come here for bickering; for that I ask my wife how her day went! Some see this as a problem, as I do, while others do not. I agree that it IS worth mentioning and any (unintended) insults are never appropriate. Heyjewel is not giowa's clone and his opinions ought to treated with respect even if one does not agree with him. (Giowa, this is not meant as an insult to you, only as a reference to the way you have been treated, even by me!) Let us focus on the TERRIFIC car we have and attempt to make it even better. Just because one person thinks adding a free flowing muffler is a good thing does not mean the rest of us have to follow along. I want to improve my car as much as anyone (I have the manual) but insulting our members will not help and may drive some of us, and Lincoln management, away. Focus on what is truly important. If something is a minor inconvenience to you so be it but it may be a major pain in the *** to someone else, and thus deserving of mention. Opinions, by their very nature, are subjective.
I took the long way home (the normal way since purchasing an LS) and though I drove 45 miles to transverse the 12 to home in 95 degree temperatures I did not find the plate to be overly hot; it was warm though. I have a manual transmission car so I hope this is in some small way helpful.
Thank the Lord I haven't been involved in the recent debate. I wasn't going to say a peep until keyrow (at #3089) mentions my name. (Don't worry, no offense taken.) I'm wondering if I should do my civic duty and fall on my sword in an effort to distract the bunch of you, uniting warring factions against me, the common enemy? Should I bring up I-6s? Or compliment the BMW 330i? Just kidding. I'm not suicidal (at present).
I apologize for my extremely poor attempt at humor. I promise not to insult anyone on the board anymore. I ran into a fellow LS'er today in College Station. He was extremely happy with his V-8 non-sport. That was the first LS I've seen here in about a month. It sure beats driving a BMW 3 series that all the sorority girls have!
I know this sounds simple and I DON'T intend to insult you, but was that part of the console in direct sunlight for an extended lenght of time? That could account for the heat. I checked mine on the way home after sitting outside all day at work and it felt a "normal" temperature to me.
On a sadder note, I noticed a puddle under my car at work today. At first I thought it was tranny fluid as it is red. Come to find out the power steering resevoir is only half full. I crawled under the car and the red fluid is all down the right side. Oh well, it appears that I've blown a hose and I "have" to drive it to work tomorrow. After work I visit my dealer and will post the results.
Brian HELP!!!!! I can't get rid of this silly grin from last Sat!!!!!
But if all the rich, cute, easy sorority girls have BMWs, does that mean they like guys that own & drive BMWs? And that a poor middle class shlub like me has no chance in my LS8 Sport? I mean, hey, I'm almost 40 and ready for that midlife crisis I've heard so much about. Should I get myself hair implants, liposuction, and a 3 Series convertible? New Beatle too feminine, PT Cruiser too retro, and Corvette too dirty older middle aged man.
To follow-up on ronniepooh's tip on the deal tirerack.com has on the P235/50/VR-17 Firehawk LH: Yes, indeed, $106 per tire. I ordered a set last night, they called me this AM to confirm the shipping address, and e-mailed this afternoon saying they had shipped today. Pretty impressive service. Total with Fed tax and shipping (to Colo.) $466.06.
We've got to assume that there are a certain number of folks who come to this site each day expecting to learn something -- they could be here for the first time. The rest of the traffic deals with those of us who have been participating here for months (or years).
I'm on record as a simplicity-driven performance-oreinted (love them hyphens) buyer of an LS manual, and I tend to throw stones at those who obsess over cell phone hookups, how the trunk opens (or doesn't), whether there are "mystery beeps" to be endured, how awful it is if the automatic seat repositioning system doesn't work correctly, how my lease deal compares with yours and any number of other things, but I still enjoy reading the board.
If the purpose here is to somewhat encourage those who haven't obtained one of our beloved LS's, there's room for improvement. If the purpose is to exhibit one's ego, well. . .bring your lunch.
Why beat up on fellow LS family members. If the hair is standing up on the back of our neck and you want to attack someone then direct it to Gleen the BMW lover who seems to be lurking on this forum feeding us bogus BMW statistics vs. LS and his totally weak reasons the LS does not measure up. Us LS'ers are truely experiencing the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE and the BMW'ers only day dreaming they are.
Here is my contribution. After 18 months of ownership, I discovered that pushing the RDS button ('00 base system) with the ignition off will cause the clock to display the time for 10 seconds. Couldn't find any reference to this in my (6/99) edition of the OM. Discovered quite by accident during a 5-hour detailing frenzy on my day off. And all this time, I was turning the key to display the time. Now it will be easier for me to compute how long I have until my wife, the LS widow, asks me when I'll be finished bonding with my car.
It really does run better when it's clean
Have a good night, all. It's bedtime on the east coast.
Heyjewel, I do not think you are a knit picker for your comments. Neither is anyone else who list their life experiences with the LS on this board. If anything I will take the honor of being the king of the knit pickers because after one year of ownership my LS has been with the dealer for various warranty repairs (go back many postings for a list) for 3 months. However, I love the car when I have it. I am particularly enjoying the loaner LSV8(unfortunately non-sport, compared to mine) I have had now for 4 weeks learning the limits of the LS and saving the wear and racking up the miles on mine, but who love to get back into mine. Another bright spot is I have only had to wash my car 2 times in the year I have owned it because the dealer has done a good job of keeping it clean for me (maybe able to get something else from my list since I will not have to ask for new cleaning supplies again this Xmas!).
I personally like to hear about others problems/annoyances as the solutions and comments that are provided help me in fixing it, living with it or in dealing with the service writer in its repair. Hopefully Lincoln people are logging them for product enhancement or reliability fixes in providing continuous improvement to what is a good car for the money.
1. This forum is the perfect place to report problems, perceived or real, big or small, period. I don't remember heyjewel saying anything other than "my trunk won't open when I press the button". No whining. It was through this forum that he found out what caused it and can now either avoid the situation or at least know what caused it when it happens again. If something on your car wasn't working wouldn't you want it fixed? I sure would. I don't expect my LS to be perfect, but I expect everything to work as advertised. Don't bash anyone for reporting facts or giving their opinions.
2. Don't put the LS on a pedestal (it weighs too much!). It isn't perfect. Don't bash people who say they don't like it. Don't bash people who say they prefer another brand. It's their money and their opinions. Think about it - would you like a BMW owner telling you that you bought the wrong car? I don't think so - so don't do it to them. Just make sure folks have all the facts to make their decision.
3. Finally - it's just a car. It's not life or death (unless you were riding with Brian last weekend). Lighten up. Have some fun. I'm not trying to preach, just asking people to respect each other. No need for name calling or holier than thou attitudes.
I talked to the shop foreman at my dealer today since he had a question about a customer who came in to have his Firestones replaced on his LS-8 Sport. Since Ford has stopped doing business with Firestone/Bridgestone they are no longer able to replace the tires with like tires. They also have to go through a specific distributor, which means that they had to fork out $230/tire for Pirelli P6000 since that was the only tire that fit the Sport model that the distributor carried.
Wonder what Lincoln is going to be putting on the new LSes? Goodyears, Michelins, BFGs? Can't see them going to Pirellis since they are pretty high-end and Lincoln hasn't used them in the past. Michelins and Goodyears would be my guess. What do y'all think?

On a sadder note, I noticed a puddle under my car at work today. At first I thought it was tranny fluid as it is red. Come to find out the power steering resevoir is only half full. I crawled under the car and the red fluid is all down the right side. Oh well, it appears that I've blown a hose and I "have" to drive it to work tomorrow. After work I visit my dealer and will post the results.
Brian HELP!!!!! I can't get rid of this silly grin from last Sat!!!!!
Thank you,

Wonder what Lincoln is going to be putting on the new LSes? Goodyears, Michelins, BFGs? Can't see them going to Pirellis since they are pretty high-end and Lincoln hasn't used them in the past. Michelins and Goodyears would be my guess. What do y'all think?
