    I think I've decided to get a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S to replace the Firehawks. I just can't convince myself to put another set of Firestones on, even if they're dirt cheap. They are now available in 235/50WR17. I can get them at Costco for $212 each plus $7 mounting (including valve stems), balancing (lifetime), flat repair and road hazard warranty. Plus sales tax. Same price as tirerack.com. The reviews on the Pilot Sport (A/S is the new all-season version) were great and they have a ITQG rating of 400 for treadwear, which is very good. They have to be ordered so it will be a couple of weeks before I can give a report.

    My choice also, also at Costco, but in the 245/45/17 size. At Costco, they will hand start your lug nuts. Discount Tire started one of lug nuts on my Cressida with their wrench on my expensive irreplaceable custom wheels with custom black lug nuts. Result, over 200 lbs of torque to get the nut off, stripped nut and stud, hours lost. I do not let Discount tire mount or unmount my wheels. I take them off and have them put the tires on. And I pray. And they told me "we use torque sticks" !!! Don't believe them. Custom wheels deserve hand everything including a torque wrench. And check the torque when you get home. I will try Costco next. I told them my story and the mgr said they hand-torque non-steel wheels.
    We'll see.

    For anyone interested in my dyno graph results for the K&N filter and then the additional gain from a modified air box, click on http://www.caddyinfo.com Then click on Cadillac performance - Cadillac modification for.... Then click on Northstar 4.0 intake....


    In addition to the total +8 peak HP and +7 peak torque from both improvements the curves really got a boost of up to +10 HP and +10 torque from 4600 to 4900 rpm.


    Yeah it's GM, but I would hope some of you guys would find this interesting.

    On smooth roads in 5th gear (automatic) at from 25-40 mph, I get what sounds like a bad wheel bearing sound (sort of a low pitched whine or drone). Dealer says it is not a wheel bearing. Thinks it is tires. This is a new sound--only happened about last 1000 miles. Have 21,000 miles on my 2000 LS8. Anyone else have this problem and can give me any advice on what it might be and a possible fix. It is annoying to listen to. I do hear it sometimes at higher speeds.

    Did you ever deal with 4 Day Tire when they were in business a few years ago? They would always advertise that they hand torqued all non-steel wheels to the correct specs. I bought a lot of tires from those guys and was always quite pleased with their service and committment. Did they sell out to Discount Tire? I can't remember. I think Americas Tire and Discount have the same owner.

    I need some help from some of you hands-on guys out there. While rotating my tires a few days ago, I managed to wring off one of the lug bolts on the front wheel. Much to my surprise, the local dealer tells me this is NOT a warranty item.
    Can anyone tell me what is involved in replacing the broken stud so I can do it myself? Any help would be much appreciated.

    A 245/45 is 10mm wider and a tiny bit lower (less sidewall) than the 235/50. It also seems like a more common size.
    As far as lug bolt removal goes, you need to press out the bolt from the rear of the brake hub. It doesn't take much to do it. A C-clamp or quick and dirty with a hammer will work. The bolt has "ribbings" near it's head to prevent it from turning while tightening the lug nut. Go to the parts dept and ask for a replacement lug bolt. You don't have to take apart/off the hub but on the rear you may have to work around the emergency brake system. I haven't gone that deep into my LS to give you specific advice. Unless you are a gorilla with a wrench, I'd imagine that that broken bolt was not forged or heat treated properly. Or maybe the car has been to Discount Tire!
    Yes, my favorite tire store was 4 day and the guys there were very custom wheel oriented. They hand tightened my wheels. I think they were bought out by Discount because here in San Diego Discount took over some of the old 4 Day locations. Pity.

    I have been looking at an S4. I realize it is smaller than the LS and probably different in many ways. But they are both sports sedans, I think. Any of you try an S4? Or any other cars? What made you go with the LS?

    Audi S4 is great car, ut kinda pricey, isnt it? Also too small for my 6 ft frame and 2 young kids. LS has the room, better handling (with the Sport Package) and an overall better value. I test drove the BMW 3 series (too small) the BMW 5 series (still smaller interior-wise than the LS) and a MB E class. 2 years and 42,000 miles later, I am extremely glad I went with my LS. (V6 Sport/Auto).

    A while back, a few guys made posts about hearing a slight "knock" or "clunk" in the steering column vicinity when turning your steering wheel full left or full right. I have that noise as well (had it for awhile, about to take the car in), and wondered if anyone found out exactly what the issue was, and how it was fixed?

    I posted a similar question last week. My 2001 LS sport had 2700 miles on it. My droning was combined with a low "thumping" or "rubbing" sound most pronounced from 25 to 40. The frequency of the "thumping" increased linearly with speed. My problem wound up being the rear left wheel bearings. Just got my car back on Wednesday and it is very quiet now. One other poster noted a problem with the universal joint. Good luck.

    I sometimes get a whine in mine also. It seems to come from the passenger seat area, particularly during higher than average (but well below the limit) cornering manuevers. Or when the stereo is loud enough to actually hear as opposed to just being background noise. Only solution is to leave the offending part at home. :-)

    Hi all,

    I haven't participated in this forum in some time, but I see many of the original folks are still around. I met many of you in Irvine last year after driving out from Az. I'm now living in San Luis Obispo, CA where there are some great curvy back roads and fantastic weather. Sounds like everyone is still enjoying their LS's like me.

    There's a nagging problem with my LS for which I've brought it in to service at least 5 times now in Arizona and in California. How many others have experienced the instrument cluster transparent plastic cover squeeking. In all my visits to get this fixed, they keep changing out parts, but the squeeking continues. Does anyone know of a Lincoln Retrofit based solution, or maybe there is a chemical solution, where a lubricant can be sprayed on to reduce the noise.

    I'm so frustrated about this that I'm ready to start calling engineers that I met down in Irvine.

    Thanks for any suggestions/guidance.

    Also, Brian I took a look at your LLSOC page after much time away. Good information....great job as usual.

    I have a (March)'00 LSV8 and have not encountered any of the common problems with the exception of the mystery beep. I love the car. However, I do have a noise that comes from under the car when I enter/exit the vehicle. It comes from behind the driver, but doesn't sound like it is coming from the vicinity of the rear suspension. I also hear it with the windows open when the vehicle weight shifts around. This may not make sense, but it sounds and feels like a body stiffness related thing.

    Any ideas? Would I still hear it if I had an inline 6!

    Seriously, any thoughts would be appreciated.

    I was the guy in front of you who made a comment about your virgin front bumper - never to have a license plate bracket. Welcome to SLO city, the town with no drive thrus. I visit twice a year from San Diego. I call it the Berkeley of central Cal. Home of CCS.com, the skateboarders HQ, and Morro Rock. Where you can blow big money on fish and chips (The Fish Bowl). Just up the road, and their still working on the grade up 101), is Atascadero, which reminds me of American Grafitti, there are really good car shows in the park near the zoo. Same for Avila Beach, where I went to a car show last Easter weekend. Don't miss the car show in Paso Robles every year near the Airport. Just east of Paso is the Monument to James Dean, where he met his end at age 24 at the intersection of Highway 46 and 41 (since revised).
    But the road is very much like it was in 1955. Go up 101 to San Lucas and catch 198 to Coalinga and then I-5. Really flat and I hit 110 mph one time breaking in my five speed Cressida after a trip to Monterey. Going the other way, you can always hit Solvang for a fun day. Near Santa Maria, you can catch 166 east for a good LS time. Compared to Arizona, you are going to be a lot cooler, and there are fun roads in three directions. Maybe I will see you at a car show. I go to at least two a year near SLO city. Compared to San Diego, your area is a car show orgy. Do you work near Poly?

    I have a 00 LS8 sport. It started about a 1000 mile back. When you go around a curve it sounds like you are being buzzed by a small airplane. It now has a whine on certent roads. My tires have 18,000 miles on them. Would like to know if others are having same.

    I had the steering wheel noise a few weeks ago, it turned out to be a defective bearing that the steering shaft goes through, the dealer replaced the whole lower steering column as per factory recommendations, the bearing itself is not a serviceable part. Hope this helps.

    I get that too! It also happens once I'm a certain amount over the posted speed limit, usually 25mph or more! Leaving the offending party at home generates another type of whine!

    What type of noise were you hearing. I have a 2001 LS and notice that my power steering pump/system is noise, especially during startup. Even when fully warmed up, I can hear the pump "working" when doing slow steering manuvers "aka backing out of garage." Not a clunk, just the pump being loud. Anyone else notice this or is this normal???? Thanks.

    Thanks to all on both sides of the fence for their efforts in putting Mania 2 together.
    I realize the Lincoln guys don't have "entertain LS owners" as part of their job descriptions. Matter of fact I lost all track of time and wondered why the lights were off in some sections we visited, until I realized it was 5:30 on a Friday afternoon.
    The access to the people and sights we were allowed to experience was beyond what I had ever expected. To do it again, I'd like to see more time like maybe two days, but then again you have to realize we're taking up these folks time.
    Brian and Debbie - I don't know how you survived. Brian looked like he was about to pass out at 7:00 last night. I've organized functions before and your thousand and one unseen details are fully appreciated.
    Thanks again to all. Nice to know there are still really nice people who care and take pride in what they do.

    The noise sounded as if you took 2 small blocks of wood and tapped them together lighty, It wasn't real loud, but, it sure was annoying after a while. At first the noise was only occassional, but, then got to the point where it occured every time you turned the wheel to either extreme, the dealer didn't have a problem recreating the sound.

    The repair bill is $800 + the fog and clearance lights. I figure that will push the $$$ close to a grand! They pay about $350 just for the bumper. The truck tread caused a lot of "internal" damage also.

    Stan forgot to mention that when you take your trip over 198 to I-5 to stop at Harris Ranch and get yourself probably the best darn steak you'll ever get, and grab a few for the fridge at home(not to mention The Worlds Best Corned Beef Hash). I'm not an LS owner yet... been lusting after one for some time, and lurking here regularly. Rented one for a long weekend after 9-11 to escape to central coast for wine tasting and total news blackout. It worked. Wifey took it to work one day (a 65 mile haul)... she said 'now I know why you want one of these' (we have a duratec 98 Taurus and a 98 2-dr Accord)... Driving from Lancaster to Solvang was an absolute dream... was not the slightest tired after the drive... screamed up San Marcos Pass Rd outside Sta Barbara without even breathing hard.... un- intentionally hit 125 passing a guy outside New Cuyama... and got better gas mileage than my Taurus...
    Now if only I wasnt so schizy about the economy (work for a chip-mfg equipment co, so I'm a little paranoid lately)...

    Anyhow... looking forward to being part of the family soon... LLSOC... Mania... bitching about my windows falling... 8-)

    I had to print that out for future itineraries. I'm from San Diego and my LS (2000 Manual) likes the varied topography of the Central Coast area. I forgot to mention that there are two excellent twistie roads that take you from Morro Bay to Atascadero and to Paso Robles. You can take the 25 mph corners at 50 if the passenger allows. Tons of beautiful oak trees that make the road dark in the daytime in some spots. It's alot more fun than just taking Highway 1 from SLO City to Morro Bay which is four lane.
    Whichever LS Sport model you get, they excel at handling curves. Everyday is like driving the roller coaster. The LLSOC website says "Wood - Leather - Adrenalin". It should be "G-Forces - Borla - Polks - Adrenalin".

    Thanks. Yes, it would be a crime against nature to mount a California plate on that virgin front bumper. I put mine on the garage wall, where it cannot be photographed by a "red light" intersection camera. Friends don't let friends drive with front license plates, especially on LSes.     I wish I had gone to Wixom. I would have asked some point blank questions on the stationary D-shaped "bearing/guide", the lack of a tensioner and "winder" on the "drum"; the pop out plastic plug. Did anyone get specific? Or was it just generalities and "we are the engineers and you lay people wouldn't understand" routine?
    Of course I would also ask about the RX-7 vs. the Getrag trannies and the lack of LSD.
    Did you guys really meet with the engineers or were they really MBAs or accountants? I'd rather have one Attila the Hun who can make a decision than even one committee. At least I would know who should get fired. As it is, who gets the blame and who gets the credit? LM needs just one Zora Arkus-Duntov. Now off the soapbox as I don the Kevlar.

    To echo Ray, it was a great day meeting with the Lincoln people at the Wixom plant. We really did meet with the engineers - quality time with several engineers representing a full spectrum of specialties and responsibilities. There were plenty of hard questions and honest answers.

    We all know that the car isn't perfect, but it is clear that it gets better with each model year. It is also clear that the LS people at Lincoln have a real passion for the car.

    I plan to buy 215 60 16 snow tires for my 2001 LS with regular suspension. Tire Rack has five different tires: (Firestone Winter Fire $62.00, Dunlop Graspic DS-1 $68.00, Michelin Artic Alpin $85.00, Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 $86.00, and Pirelli Winter 210 snowSport $122.00).

    Does anybody have any experience with any of these tires.

    You guys (and gals) who have not yet joined LLSOC and/or decided not to go to Wixom missed an incredible, indescribable, monster event.

    We were escorted through the very heart of Lincoln land and saw, in detail, how the LS was designed, built, and tested. We were treated to many wonderful surprises like being able to "kick the tires" of the new LSE.

    The dedication and enthusiasm of the LM folks was very evident at every stop.

    Many Many Thanks to Brian and Debbie for their hard work in making this all happen. If anyone ever questions whether their LLSOC dues are worth the money ... let them go to Wixom!

    All of our comments and complaints were addressed at one point or another by the very people who are working the issues.

    Let no one on this board get the misguided impression that LM has abandoned this car. They have not. We have seen clear evidence that they are working hard on ways to improve this marque and that they DO LISTEN to all of our rants and raves. No car is perfect and we may not get everything we ever wish for, but if any American car can beat the pants off of the foreign competition, it is the LS. This is not only because of its superior design, but because of the dedicated, talented, and caring people who make it a reality.

    I know. I've seen it myself. I went to Wixom.

    There was all kinds of talk about almost every aspect of the car but at different times with different people. I must have smelled a little off as I was alone at a table for lunch. Two Lincoln engineers joined me and had so many questions for me I barely had time to eat and had no time to query them. We saw a lot we can't talk about - if we did we'd lose the confidence the Lincoln people put in us by sticking their necks out. You have to realize this was a first for them, no script or guidelines. To give you one example of thinking outside the box, when we toured their computer labs where concurrent CAE is the norm, we were shown a "what if" proposition where the Yamaha type SHO engine from the Tarus would fit in the LS. It doesn't so it won't be. But that's the kind of stuff they look at as well as the mundane details like where to position a switch.
    The window mechanism's root cause failure is known. We were shown a unit,statistically when it can fail and where IE Texas, Florida etc where high temps contribute to it. Of note is that the shrapnel many see upon disassembly is not the cause of the failure but rather the effect from it.
    Talking to the engineers, if they had their way we'd be driving 650 hp twin turbo, 8 speeds but they have many masters to please.

    Your conception of how the window issue was treated couldn't be further from the reality. These folks are as upset over the window issue as the owners. Our full-day schedule left little time for the formal Q&A session, but they anticipated the window issue arising and even brought a sample of the offending part in order to explain in detail what happened. No punches were pulled.

    Trust me. Between the window and cooling fan module failures, these people have spent 80-90 hours a week in the plant and in some cases not even seen their families for 2 weeks at a time. It may not seem like it at times, but they are committed to this car and quality.

    As with the others, I also must thank Brian and Debbie & Trooper Ryan for all their dedication and hard work. Without your vision, none of this would ever have occurred.

    For those of you that missed Wixom or are not LLSOC members, let's just say that there are many things that we experienced that we wish we could share, but alas, we have committed to Lincoln our vow of silence.

    What I took away, the tremendous complexity that went into bringing the LS to market and the dedication and hard work of Lincoln to do that, yet they continue on that. It was clear, they set the bar high for themselves coming out with the car and they know it, so know they are trying to make the car much better.

    It was also clear that as others have stated, their passion is as strong as ours if not more. And they do listen, it's just that changes take time in such a complex process. After touring the factory, it's amazing they are able to implement changes (as many as they do daily) without stopping the lines. But from what I gather, if they continue to improve upon the current LS, I will be another return customer.

    For a first go round, I would say that Licoln did an excellent job at keeping an open dialog with us and truly listening and responding with truthful and honest answers. I commend them for that as ethics is a tough act to play correctly, yet they did it with ease.

    Brian, sorry to do this, but when's Mania III and what are we gonna do and ... Just kidding, but I am sure it will be even greater. Thanks again.

    I'm sure the engineers are sincere. I think they are trying to correct a situation that probably originated at the supplier level. Many components are engineered by the suppliers these days. Did they actually mention which component of the window operator assembly was suspect?
    Re-engineering has got to be expensive. It makes you wonder if there were cost/time restraints in the initial design and testing that were extreme.
    I for one like detailed explanations. This window mechanism is not rocket science.

    Sorry pat... here's a cleaned up version...

    I too have had this annoying squeak since day one.
    It happens in cold weather only.
    No one has been able to fix it.
    By the way for those interested. after the call from Ford about my window
    failures, because of Jim Rogers intervention,
    I have heard nothing from anyone since.
    Obviously the so called TSB for the window failure requiring both regulators to be
    replaced is just a gimmick to make us think they are trying to fix the problem...
    and in reality it is just a big publicity stunt which is as hollow as the paper it was
    printed on.
    The most frustrating part is they start to make the effort and I start to believe
    they are really trying to do something and then silence..I for one am convinced
    that Lincoln just isn't getting it.
    Nice try but once again they failed to follow through.
    Hope everyone enjoys the dog and pony show at the next event. I for one will
    not be there.
    I just couldn't take the double talk from Lincoln...
    Ok I'm ready.. tell me how I need to find a new dealer.... call customer service....
    give me a break... been there.. done that..

    From the information presented at Wixom, are there any recommendations on how to avoid the problem until a permanent fix is available? Does the onset of colder weather mean the problem won't surface again until next summer?

    The good news is that if the problem is truly heat related then it should only affect a portion of the LS' sold, so a recall to fix the problem once a permanent fix is found should be easier.

    I also agree that it's too bad Lincoln doesn't have more influence and control over it's dealers. For 99% of Lincoln customers the dealer is the only contact they have.

    In our abbreviated Q&A session (I say abbreviated because we could have easily gone for a whole day doing this, but we had a VERY full schedule to adhere to) the Ford engineer responsible for the window mechanism had the very assembly to show us and provided a thorough explanation of the failure mode. While the part is actually designed by a supplier (incidently, the same supplier for both Lexus and Mercedes), everyone now believes the root cause failure has been identified, and a REAL fix will should arrive in the January 2002 time frame. The fix reported by Dick Cupka last January at Mania 1 turned out to be only an interim fix. The part that fails is plastic (the part that holds the window and travels up and down the rail). The interim fix was just a stiffened/reinforced plastic part. The real fix will be a metal part. We were told it will take time to purge the old parts out of the Ford parts channel/depots and dealer inventory, and back-fill them with the ultimate solution.

    Since window failures are not safety related, I wouldn't expect a recall. A new TSB will probably be released, but we didn't have time to discuss this part of the issue. I wouldn't be surprised if Lincoln replaced/repaired broken window regulators regardless of warranty period, but no discussion to that effect took place during the Wixom visit. I only say that because of the REAL committment Lincoln has toward the LS and it's customers as I heard and felt during the Mania 1 & 2 events I attended.

    Kevin, as for your multiple failures, and short lived repairs, I have to conclude that your dealer must have some culpability here. If you want to be a "disgruntled" customer, you have a right to be. However, you do have options available to you that could improve your situation. No one should have to endure problems associated with window regulators, but, unfortunately, the LS does have this problem and we'll all have to deal with it. If you like the LS enough, the window problem is rather trivial (though annoying) and does not affect driveability or safety.

    By the way, after everyone left the Q&A room to move on to the next venue, I briefly spoke with the Ford engineer one-on-one. He told me that FREQUENT use of the rear windows will MINIMIZE failures (contrary to what one would assume). Further, when the window is in the up/fully closed position, the system is at maximum stress/strain. If you park your car in a secure place, you may be well served to "crack" your window slightly to reduce the stress on the mechanism. Personally, I probably will not do that, but, I was told this will help minimize trouble.

    Well, I might have found some relief on this nagging issue today. I took a ride with the shop foreman who seemed very knowledgeable about this dash rattling sound. He has experience with the dash squeak in one other car and explained that with tie downs they were able to correct successfully.

    I'll keep you all posted.

    Since I haven't been around for a while, has anyone come out with a clear best of breed hand's free kit yet for LS cellular users?
