sdmike/300michael- yeah it would be nice to have some of our West coast owners at the plant. We of course will be thinking about you guys.

I tried to email you but it bounced -- please send me an email from a working address.

Also, you need to update your email address in your profile.

    Thanks!

    >...Concorde LTD wheels, ... an aluminum wheel with a chrome-plated steel "cover"...

I hate to disillusion anyone, those "covers" are plastic and epoxied over the aluminum. It's a similar process to the chrome parts in a model car kit. (They melt quickly in a fire)

try that same email address again--should work now..

Maybe you can talk the plant supervisor to take some digital movies of the tour. That way he can edit out the stuff we are not susposed to see. Have him include everyone's 300M's.
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
That is going the wrong way. I agree the options should be 3.5L, 4.7L, and 5.7L Hemi. Always move forward, not backward, that way you can see where you are going.
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
With the cameras mounted on my car I am sure they would not allow it in the plant anyway. They would get suspesious seeing me drove around in circles in there.
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
Speaking of cameras, I got another mirror control switch and an outside mirror. I am thinking of hooking up the camera to the mirror mechinisem, and using the switch I should be able to pan the camera up and down and right to left. On reverse it could do an automatic pan down to check for obstructions. Kind of like the rear view mirrors do, on the later models.

dont you already have a rear camera in your third brake light housing---

    BlueBaron here,

Ok next question. When is everyone meeting at the plant? I don't know if I can sneek in on the tour. So if there is an expected time to hang out and chat in the parking lot, that's when I'd like to be there.
I hope you guys aren't planning anything too early. I'll be at the MoparFest over the weekend.

So where's the MoparFest being held and what day and time is it on?

Well, the new tips from Truck Add Ons http://www.truckaddons.com/Catalog/subpages/toucan_tips01.htm came in today. They're product number T564 and they look great. The photo on the site isn't the greatest so I took some shots and put them online. Check out http://www.fastforwardclub.com/300M/new-tips.jpg to see them. The jpg file is 154kb so it may take a while to download.

I got the Dynomax muffler, Magnaflow collector, and the tips. Now I just gotta cut the right hole in the bumper and take it to the muffler shop. I'll post photos when it's done.

thats just the setup I want to get---did you get stainless mufflers? Did you use the template that one of the members had on his web site? Where did you purchase your mufflers? model #'s?

Love those tips---like the inner screening but it probably will get dirty fast---post some pics of the install if possible or at least the finished product!

I think it is too bad that Chrysler is dropping the chrome exhaust pipes on the 2003 model.

So what is your favorite model year? For me it is the 2001 where they introduced the Luxury Group with real wood, changed the rear lights, and added the chrome shifter and chrome exhaust pipes.

But then I am biased since I own an early 2001 model. Still too bad though that they took some of that away again.

Also, what do you guys think the 300N with the HEMI will cost? Below $40k or more around $45k? I better start saving now...
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
my guess is about 36K--Chrysler is known for value and the base N should be around the present price---so add about 3-4K for the Hemi and you get 36K---I doubt it will be anywhere near 40K--its not a Mercedes..Now the convertible model-thats another story--that should sell for about 40K+
  • videoman1videoman1 Member Posts: 201
I got the Dynomax at Summit Racing http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=%2Fproduct%2Easp%3Fp%3D490%26searchtype%3Decat . The part number is 17739 and it's not stainless steel.

The Magnaflow was purchased from Best Auto Parts http://www.bestautopartsonline.com/universal_mufflers_single_dual.htm . The part number is 12258 and it's not stainless steel either.

Both parts are Aluminized Steel. I'm not sure if that will make a difference or not. I plan on using the existing intermediate pipe and the muffler shop will be making the pipes to go from the Dynomax to the tips. He also may use the existing pipes from the cats to the Magnaflow. We'll see once he gets it up on the rack.

  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Nice tips! My installer was able to use the pipes coming back from the cats to the collector, I believe. If not, at least he didn't charge me for them. :) Can't wait to see the results.
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
Is the price or $44 for the Dynomax and $83 for the Magnaflow plus shipping a good price---or can you get them at Pepboys for the same or less?----the I.D.size for the tips is 2 3/16--will that mate up with the 2 1/2 pipes without a problem? Hey Mike: Is that the same mufflers and setup you used?
  • hmk123hmk123 Member Posts: 122
For $36k that would be an amazing deal. Even if options push it up to maybe $38k. I think the Lincoln LS V8 retails around $37k. I don't think there are many V8s sedans under $40k. Will be interesting to read the first reviews of the HEMIs when they appear in Dodge trucks later this year.
  • videoman1videoman1 Member Posts: 201
Those were the best prices I could find. Pepboys and our local smaller autoparts store was much higher. If I remember right, I think the prices for the Dynomax and Magnaflow included shipping. I'll have to check.

As far as the I.D. size being different, I certainly hope it isn't a problem. I would think that the muffler shop could handle it, though.

  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
I noticed the maganflow lists the single "inlet" as 2 1/4" and the dual "outlets" as 2 1/2". This is used as the collector. Does it really matter that this muffler is actually used in reverse as the outlets are actually used as inlets---I would imagine its the same either way but just wonder about any internal baffling placement causing flow restriction---I know some mufflers are marked with an arrow for proper flow direction--there must be a reason for that---

another question: is there a stainless equivalent to the above mufflers or something close that would still do the job? I would consider stainless to prevent having to replace them a few years down the road
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
I wonder if the 14580 magnaflow stainless would fit ok ---it has dual 2 1/4 inlets and one 2 1/2 outlet and is just $50 higher at $133. Thing is its 4 inches longer but I would think it could be made to fit. anyone?
  • wencaowencao Member Posts: 52
Indeed, HEMI V8 is cheap to build, according to car-truck reports, it is cheaper to build than the current 4.7L V8. I can assume that the cost increase will mainly due to Mercede-Benz transmission.
So the 3.6K is very probable. With options HEMI 300N could goto 38K.
  • toms99toms99 Member Posts: 252
I'll go out on a limb and say the 99. Sure we had window motor problems, but the 99's also had the better stereo amp (AB unit) and 3 more ponies (253.) Plus, my 99LHS came with chrome exhaust tips, fold-away rear-view mirrors, etc. There hasn't been any real "jaw-dropping, drooling, gotta-trade-now" improvements in the 00, 01 or 02 (and that includes the Special....nice, but not a "must trade" up car for me.)

I know you received the tire I sent you. Did you ever have it installed? How is it working out??

Anybody looking for an everyday driver or backup to your M's, check out www.CanadianDriver.com and see what DC has come up with. I will be ordering 2.
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
    2000 of course:

It has the CD changer, no chrome around the windows, the best wheels.

OTOH, crappy tires, no chrome exhaust tips.
  • beach15beach15 Member Posts: 1,305
I'd have to say I liked certain early 2001's the most. These were the M's produced when there was a shortage of the 300M wheels and they got the LHS Razorstars instead.
    -Chrome razorstars
-Better looking window chrome & gloss black
    -Luxury group and real wood
    -Chrome/leather shifter
    -"Original" grill

All that, fully loaded plus PHG!

Having 2 M's in the stable, I will try to give an objective opinion.

The 2000 M is mine. Pretty as a picture -- inferno red (with Zaino). No real problems except for the badyears (which met an early demise!). Gets lots of looks -- even the service manager at the service center commented on Saturday what a beautiful car it was and what great shape it was in! I prefer mine, but a lot of that goes to the color. Pretty much the same as the 99, with rear cupholders and a few bugs worked out.

The 2001 M (cinammon glaze)is my wife's. We drive each other's cars a lot and she prefers hers due to the following improvements:

radio controls on the steering wheel
    fold back side mirrors
    Michelins
    chrome exhaust tips
    clear rear lenses
    better functioning ATC
    chrome around the windows

She also likes her color better because she can go 90 without being obvious :)

I have to admit hers is a bit more refined, but we each like our own better. If her's was inferno red, I'd like her's better -- but they're both great!

It was a night and day change over the 98 LH 1st generation sedan selections. The other years are cosmetic changes over the previous models. The differance is like comparing the LH to the LX.
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
Road and Track has an article about the 2004 Charger. I hope the picture is wrong, because I do not like it. I liked the earler (hotwheels) rendition much better. It took more styling cues from the old Chargers of yesteryear. I do agree with them on one point, it sure will give the Next gen Grand Prix a run for it's money, for less of it I mean.
  • ottowrkrottowrkr Member Posts: 778
Beach , you asked about the wheels for the M if you dont want chrome, well they are the same as the 2002 non-chrome wheel.

300michael - cameras in cars dont count. They would never know.

BlueBaron- the club will be in Detroit for the Woodward cruise on the 17&18. Then they will drive to Brampton on Sunday afternoon. The tour is for 10 am Monday morning.

uxca300m - moparfest is in New Hamburg, Ontario. Here is a link http://www.moparfest.com

hmk123-my fav year has to be 2002, why you ask one word -SPECIAL

    >Indeed, HEMI V8 is cheap to build...
    ????
As I recall, hemi production essentially ceased due to the much higher cost associated with the complex heads. A 70's 426 hemi powered Charger cost $1000 more than a 383 or 440, a 20%+ difference.

Yes Tom, I got the tire and had it installed two days later. It's perfect. I can't thank you enough for helping me out in a bind.

2001, of course. It's the year of my M!!!!
The real wood Lux group is great, the chrome exhaust tips are cool, and the AB amp really does make a differerence. Call me crazy, but I prefer my '01 seats to the new "waterfall" seats on the Specials.

"Even with its cast-iron cylinder block, the new 5.7L will weigh less and be more compact than the 5.9L. And with just one camshaft (in the cylinder block) and two valves per cylinder, it will handily beat the multicam, multivalve Ford and Toyota truck V-8s on unit cost. In fact, DaimlerChrysler insiders say the pushrod Hemi cost less to develop and produce than the company's own 4.7L sohc V-8, introduced last year."

    BlueBaron here,

    10am huh? Don't wait for me ;)
I might cruise by around 11 or 12.

Will they gather in the back of the west parking lot?

Since the Moparfest in New Hamburg appears to be still going on Sunday the 18th, when we will be motoring from Detroit up to Brampton, would anyone be interested in stopping there on the way. Looks like it would be an easy detour if it doesn't snow. Might be a better way to spend the afternoon than at a mall or curling. Eh? Imagine the surprise on the faces of the locals when 15-20 Ms pull in. Just a thought.
  • kosh_2258kosh_2258 Member Posts: 338
A lot of time has passed since then. Manufacturing methods have improved immensely. There are more engines in the world today with a hemi head than you might realize. Most DOHC engines are hemi's because of the valve and plug layout needed. I'm pretty sure the 3.5L is a hemi even with a single cam per head because of where the plug is located: in the crown of the combustion chamber.

So relative to the engines in 1970 the hemi was expensive, but compared to most of today's engines with multiple camshafts and the mechanism to drive them a pushrod hemi IS cheaper to make.
  • fuzzywuzzyfuzzywuzzy Member Posts: 958
Late 2000. In 2000 you had the better amp, the CD changer, the 17" chrome razor star rims with the PHP, the chrome window/lock switches, less chance of first year problmes, & less road/wind noise. They didn't change the HP rating untill 2001/2002. They didn't change the amp untill the same years.
  • silverbullet4silverbullet4 Member Posts: 449
I would say 2001, because of the Lux group, chrome tips, etc. but I never liked the chrome window trim. So I will go with my 2000 over the '99 because of the improved soundproofing, better chassis isolation (new rear bushing), CD changer, and chrome window controls. Also the change to 17" wheels for PHG. ;)

    They're all great!

fwiw, most modern ohc engines are what are usually called pentroof, which has the feature of a very small squish area. one of the advantages to this design over a hemi is the ability to put the camshafts very close together making packaging much easier, expecially in fwd transverse applications.

this brings up a question for the 3.5 motor maintenance schedule: does the 3.5 use a rubber belt or a chain for the cams and what is the interval for changing the belt/chain, if in fact,
it needs to be replaced. some engines are designed
with a lifetime chain, some are not. generally, the life of a timing belt is 60,000 miles. some of the older cars (i'm think my alfa romeo from the 70's) had a chain but that also needed to be replaced around 60k miles. jackg

Believe me it's not gonna snow. The last three weeks we've had temperatures in the 90's with the humidex around 120. If you want to curl you'll have fun trying to throw the 40 lb rock down a sheet of concrete as the ice is all gone. You guys driving the specials with the summer only tires only have to watch out for the skunk and racoon road kills. Suggest you leave the traction control on. lol. Eh!
