The tech told me that due to a manufacturing "glitch," there is corrosion under the boots. They are seeing more of this lately, and it only occurs on 300Ms. They have to remove the boots to see it.
SD Mike:"Sure is a lot of stuff flying out of MCAS Miramar today." Like a lot of Marines practi cing, or like a lot of jets flying out to distant lands?
We have a fenced in front yard with a "beware of dog" sign, and a "no solicitors" sign by the front door. The doorbell just rang. The dogs (big and loud) went bonkers. I opened the wooden door and my dogs were ready to eat whoever was on the other side of the screen. An undaunted teenage voice said, "uh...I'm selling magazines" (I expected a "dood" to follow, but didn't get it). I yelled "no thanks" over the noise and closed the door.
Then it dawned on me...what the heck was this person thinking? Sheesh.
So the tech told you " That due to a manufacturing "glitch," there is corrosion under the boots. and they are seeing more of this lately, and it only occurs on 300Ms" Why would this only happen with 300M' s ?. The rack used on the 300 is the same rack on the Intrepid and Concorde. I think this was just another line they use on customers
SD Mike:"Sure is a lot of stuff flying out of MCAS Miramar today." Like a lot of Marines practi cing, or like a lot of jets flying out to distant lands?
Not sure exactly. There is normally a reasonable amount of fighter activity that I can hear when they head north from Miramar doing training. Today there seemed to be more of it, and mostly in groups of 4 fighters instead of the normal 2. I have also seen three groups of large transport-type planes, each consisting of 3 or 4 planes in formation. This isn't typical.
SD Mike:"Sure is a lot of stuff flying out of MCAS Miramar today." Like a lot of Marines practi cing, or like a lot of jets flying out to distant lands?
I currently own a 99 Transam. Getting tired of it. It's not very driver friendly. Thinking of trading for a 300M. Question? Is the 300M as good as it looks.
By the way, I live next to Camp Lejuene. Sure are a lot of Marines packing up.
good to hear from bro. im glad youre ok. i hope eVerythng is gOig great in your efforts to help. its a gReAt thing youre doin hopefully we'll all hear from u in person soon. ill be prayin for you and the others like i have been doin.
i believe some ppl posted about a seat issue in their 300ms where it sometimes shifts or moves a little. I've been having this problem, usually only shows up under medium to more aggressive driving. anyways, is there a simple solution to this that i can do or is it a dealer issue? thanks
oh, DUBS, what was your website? i never got to see your updated pics. thx.
what are the symptoms of the corroded rack problem?
I also have the seat movement problem but its not that bad yet to mention to 2*. I may wait till warranty is almost up as I hear some dealers are installing a whole new seat. My seat shows some signs of wear so it would be nice to get a free replacement someday.
Glad to see you posting again, Av. Sounds like you're working overtime doing your part for America. I wouldnt have the stomach to do what you're doing. Looking forward to seeing pics of your car. I still think you should weld the drive's side rear door shut and fill the seam. Would make it look like a 2 door.
While replacing the steering column did get rid of a dry grinding squeak that was coming from where it went through the firewall, the same noise eventually came back from somewhere in the engine compartment when turning the steering wheel while either stopped or driving. I can feel this noise transferred through the steering wheel as well as hear it.
Also, the steering feels absolutely unnerving at times. It seems that while turning across the center/straight position the power steering resistance vanishes for a bit as if the connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels is completely lost. Also, I sometimes hear and feel a click when this occurs.
When driving down a smooth freeway on a calm day, I often find myself having to do a lot more adjusting of the steering wheel than should be necessary as I drift slightly left and right. I don’t think it’s an alignment problem -- the last time my car was in I had one done, which stopped most of the squealing of the old front tires.
Looking at the conditions listed on pages 19-3 to 19-7 (Diagnosis and Testing: Power Steering Noise and Feel) of "2000 Service Manual -- LHS, 300M, Concorde, and Intrepid," the conditions which include “Squeak or rubbing sound,” “Steering column clicking,” and “Steering wheel vibrates during low speed or standstill steering maneuvers” seem to describe what I hear and feel. The conditions described by “Steering catches, sticks in certain positions” and “Hard to turn” are similar but opposite to what I feel -- decreased resistance near center.
Line or not, they're replacing the R&P under warranty, and I hope it fixes these problems. There's not much left for them to replace up there. Maybe there's air in the power steering lines.
Well, first, I thought today was Wednesday, and was outside lighting candles for a satellite image that was supposed to have been taken....rushed back in to log on to the chatroom, only to find I was the only one there..checked the computer's clock--yup, its TUESDAY....oh well....was fun being outside with my friends, all of us lighting a candle to -hopefully--be seen fin a satellite image...we shall see.... Light Show Update Took eMily to 1 1/2 star dealer and told him about light ahow effect......the printout I got back after I picked up car said.."unable to duplicate problem". This, after I told him it ocurred @night when the lights were on. Told him about several here in this forum who have had similar problem in which case YOUR dealer fixed/diagnosed as body monitor module. Printed out message 8932 from toms99 and/or valhs and showed him this TODAY. Result: he's ordering the module. Had some other things I wanted him to look/listen at/to: *noise coming from AC unit upon turning it on--clunk/tunk noise result: heard noise briefly *Leather/? on steeering wheel 'melted' misshapen: result...new steering wheel ordered. *Complained of road noise coming from driver door (the shrinking weather stripping). Result: unable to duplicate problem. *Driver seat shifts back/forward slightly on accel/deceleration: Result: seat rail/bar (?) ordered. and several other things. This is the kicker. The S.O. and I have repeatedly told service manager DO NOT PARK EMILY BETWEEN TWO VEHICLES---PARK IN OPEN AWAY FROM OTHERS....
He brings car around to me, and what do I see?......*sob* a scratch running from the end of the passenger side door below body molding, throught the passenger rear door and ...as idf this wasn't enuf, finishing up in the pastic molding just before the rear wheel well. As an added bonus, whatever did the damage left a white rub scuff/stripe just below the molding down the length....sigh. He said, "don't worry, we'll fix it" ....DUH! Of course he's going to fix it....." we'll get you a rental car--AND WE'LL PAY for it".......doouble duh.....did he think I WAS going to pay?..... Those of you at the Wall event know I have a stripe on eMily....I don't really need to have both doors painted, just the sections below the molding. I'm going to have my own autobody guy take care of this--not them. The scratch is deepest right where the doors meet, and is pushed in a small bit, enough that I can feel the indentation with my fingers....boy is the S.O. pi$$ed off...now, have to wait for parts to come in......get'em installed and then lose car for at least 3 days......sheesh..for those who wresponded with similar light show problems--THANK YOU very much--was a big help..... Doc
I did not mean to say the line they were giving you was about the replacing of the rack , I meant about it only happening on 300M's. Glad they will hopefully fix your problem ,lets hope.
drpixel-- don't you just love how they listen. Make sure your paint guy adds a few $$$ to the paint estimate . I would be going to that service managers boss ,and see what he thinks of the damage to your car. Put the screws to him , as you did ask for your car to be specifically parked away from others.
you're lucky they didnt tell you that the scratch may have been there when you brought it in. Good luck on the paint job. Make sure they blend it in properly to match rest of the car. Maybe you should have the whole side painted or at least the whole side clear coated. Silver is one of the worst colors for matching of old to new paint.
I still have issues with my M as well. The overhead temp indicator is often very far off and I believe it affects operation of the climate contro. The drivers window is very noisy when opening or closing. they supposedly replaced regulator but noise is still there.
Has anyone replaced the side mirrors yet with the mirrors with the built in turn signal?
to those who havent seen my new pics or have no idea what my car looks like, the pics are in the yahoo 300m club photo album. they're in the "dubbed and lowered 99" album. just added pics of my car with my 2 trophies and pics that where takin while it was sunny.lol as far as a website goes id love to have one but i dont have the time or patience to create one.
I have no idea how to get where you're describing. I went to the club area of yahoo and did a search on 300M and found 3 clubs. I selected the Chrysler 300M Club, but the pictures are for members only. Was I in the right place?
I have not been able to test the Avid T'4s yet in a heavy rain. I did notice that the tread pattern is more aggressive than the Michelins but the ride is quieter. Cornering is at least as good. God bless America.
& glad to be back. NYC was really starting to depress me
Flight was on time last night(out of JFK) the security was just crazy though! Went to the ticket counter to check in, waited about 45 minutes! Checked my bag, they opened it up & searched it the said it was ok. Then came the checkpoint to the gate. Passed through the detector. Even tough I didn't beep, they stoped me, & used the hand held unit to search me. Then the were scaning my carry on. They looked at it several minutes, then put me to the side, they opened that searched it, found my Digital camara. Took the batteries out, looked at the case, put it back, & then open my personal bag, & took my shaving razor. Said they aren't allowed due to new security measures. All this took about an 1/2 hour. That was after waiting on line to get through the checkpoint for like 20 minutes! Total waiting time before I got to the gate was about 1 1 1/2 hours! I'm one for security, & safty but that was just crazy! On a side note, to this, looks like all my pics I took are GONE! When I looked at my camara last night when I got home, I noticed the picture card was gone. I guess the security people who took it apart, took the card out too, or it fell out as they were taking the batteries out. Don't know, but it's gone. The loss of those pictures make me sad, it was a piece of history, also lost my only 64meg card! I'm going to call the airport today & see what I can do. At any rate I'm glad I'm safe, & back in my bed
Fuzzy - I have a 8MB Smart Media card (if that's what you use) you can have if you need it. It came with my Fuji digital camera, but I replaced it recently with a 64MB like you did. It's available if you want it. Just e-mail me your address (mritchie@vicinity.com).
if you need to get a new one, look at http://www.pricewatch.com/. You can find places that will sell a 128MB compactflash card for under $50! not a bad place too look if you're trying to find good deals on specific stuff you need.
My '99 300M turned 28,000 miles yesterday. Mpg seems to be getting better, although it was never too bad. Last tank avg'd (per computer) over 23mpg, mostly commuting miles (40/day). Problems: Two window motors One input speed sensor Interior "light show" last week. Only the one day, though. To be investigated at 30k check-up. Occasional strong smell of gas.
To celebrate, I gave the ext a bath, did some leather stuff and cleaned the interior windows. Now, that's a pain, cleaning the interior of the windshield and backlight!
Nice moment the other day. My neighbors young daughter said to her dad, "Why don't you have a beautiful car like (my M) instead of the boring Camry!" She thought the analog clock was cool, even though she said she could only read digital clocks (that's just not right...)
Like all civilized people on this planet, I continue to be devastated, depressed, amazed and hopeful regarding the never to be forgotten events of September 11, 2001. I'll be giving blood next week as that will be past the waiting period since my last donation. Checks to the Red Cross and Americares (for the families of the heroic, fallen NYPD, NYFD, EMT, etc HEROES. And to all who have, or are considering, lashing out at citizens of (or appear to be) faiths and nationalities linked to these horrific events, please think before you act. When Timothy McVeigh cowardly bombed the Murrah building in Oklahoma City, did you torch gas station owned by US citizens, Christians or former members of the military? Or randomly threaten/beat white males with crew cuts? Of course not. Yet McVeigh was all of the above.....Please think about it.

is well worth reading. (posts 9027 and 9029) We need to "know our enemy", probably more so in this case than any time in history.
On Sept. 13 I was at a trade show in Las Vegas. Our Wed. nite redeye was cancelled, so we camped out at the airport at 6:00 PM Thurs. and caught a midnight flight to Charlotte NC. From there we caught standby seats to Pittsburgh, and rented a car for the last leg to Buffalo. A disturbing experience: At Las Vegas, despite increased security, our checked luggage was not searched, I was not asked for ID, and my trusty Swiss Army knife (2 inch blade) wasn't even noticed...go figure!
Had a bit of a shock today. Whet to drive my M that was sitting in my drivway untouched for like a week. Put my foot down on the floor, & slosh! water all in the drivers side footwell. I though I fixed this?? Guess not. I'm letting the dealer look at it, just becuse I don't have the time. It's unfortant I'm at 41K miles. The dealer won't look at it without charging me $380!!!! I called DC's warranty people & get this, door seals, weather stripping, water leaks(except AC related) & basicaly anything related to the body(included body seams) is NOT covered under any of their contracts. Even the ones that's supposed to cover anything. I then called some other places about it & they said the same things. I guess it's standard, but not once in the warranty info I got before I bought it, did it say this. So I'm stuck on it It's there now, they are going to call me when they find the leak, I'm going to go there before they fix it, to see where it is so if this happens again, I will know where it is. They seem to think it's where my power cable goes through the firewall. I sealed it though. I guess we'll see.
AV-Man, that sounds like very hazardous duty. Good thing you're young and will heal fast, considering all the lumps you are taking. Take care of yourself.
Virus-My home office computer got a bad case of the W32Nimda.A@mm flu yesterday. This morning I managed to download the McAfee virus profile update and cleaned or quarantined over 1600 files that were infected. This is the worst virus I have ever experienced. It is a bad boy! It attacks in three different ways. Mister Softy needs to work on their vulnerabilities!
This is a nasty little sucker in that it uses multiple methods to attack client computers and servers. It is an e-mail transmitted trojan, so the best prevention is not to open e-mail attachments...especially EXE files. The virus is typically transmitted in a file called readme.exe. I believe McAfee and Norton have updated their virus definition files as of this afternoon but I'm not 100% sure.
My firm's entire network was down yesterday and today after getting it. The IS folks thought they had it cleaned up at 3 am today, but somehow the system got reinfected. Hope we're back up tomorrow.
