Sorry for the late reply, but been playing with my new Odyssey for past week! The $29,008 was without TTL, so the out the door price was a shade under $31,000, which sounds close to what you have (I'm in NY, so the TTL difference might be attributable to that).
I was stuck using cars.com and all those other sites that send an email to X niumber of dealers that you choose. I would suggest trying to add something to the comments section that would make them realize you're a real person looking to really buy now rather than some guy just asking for a quote because he's bored. But I didn't think those kind of requests brought much more than automated resposnes. But responding to the automated responses did provide better info and quotes.
Thanks for the information. I think I have what I need and better understanding on calculating my OTD. The VA fees & such... info really helped.
I will be around these forums for a while.. I am trying to wait for the novelty of the 2006 just coming out to wear off some before I negotiate. "Tumbleweed Time" at the dealerships, between Turkey Day & Xmas seems like a good time to buy. or Perhaps January/Feb when everyone is paying off Xmas bills & not inclined to rack up a big ticket item like a Van.
We finally bought in Northern VA. We did want the EX-L with DVD. I thought we did good, but now that I notice that everyone else may have done better because your OTD is after taxes, etc.
But we got it for $31,000 and had them throw in the cargo tray and all weather floor mats. Helpful with kids and dirt.
Then we paid taxes, tags, freight, and dealer processing. Which I thought we negotiated out, but now that I'm looking at my paperwork I notice they put it back in at 10:30 p.m. when we were in there with 3 kids.
OTD 32,800
I gave up my paid off Mercedes for this, but with 3 kids now we needed it.
Don't worry about woulda, coulda, shoulda anymore. This isn't a competition. You paid a price you thought was fair, now you have the car. Time to look ahead, not back.
We had a pretty good day yesterday. We sold the Neon to Carmax, quickly, easily, and for a price that was fair (certainly could have done better privately.)
We knew we wanted an EXL w/ DVD & Nav, and we knew the market in Metro DC is tough. We weren't in a hurry so we set our starting price at $100 over invoice and $100 processing. I wasn't so opitmistic, but it never hurts to ask. First call to the husband of a friend who works at a No. VA dealership, said "sorry, all of ours are sold at full MSRP and all of our incoming are spoken for." Alright..
My usual line is something like "Hi, I know the vehicle I want, and I'm price hunting. If I can find it at the right price, I can come buy it today."
Next call to a Honda Dealership in Hagerstown (1.25 hours from DC) had a friendly sales person, but he didn't want to discuss numbers on the phone. I left our number.
A few more calls were met by "I don't think you're going to get anywhere close to that price, we just don't discount these much. One of the MD dealers mentioned on this forum did add "if you're talking $1000 over invoice, we could have something." I now accepted this as an offer (even if it wasn't.)
A few attempts at Costco and on this site brought some emails and one call, but the call was only for 700 below MSRP.
A few hours of silence here, and I realize that $500 over is going to be a great deal, and $1000 over is still going to be fine. One dealer, when quoted the $1000 over simply said "buy it, I don't think anyone can touch that offer."
Finally the nice man from the dealership in Hagerstown calls and says he doesn't want to lose our business, what is the best deal so far? I mention the $1000 over sort-of offer and he say's he'll call back. Ba da bing, he calls back w/ $800 over, including dealer processing. Everything went great, Eric the sales guy was pleasant and knowledgeable about everything Odyssey. Even when we got to Jim the business manager, there was no schistering. Wow, what a great car and a great experience, 2 hours 15 minutes total time at the dealer.
I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma area. I started looking for an Odyssey EX-L in July. We almost purchased a 2005 EX-L from a local Honda in late July, but the car had almost 300 miles on it so we decided to wait for 2006 models.
I sent emails to several Honda dealers around Tulsa area. I know there is a Honda dealer in Bartlesville which has very competitive prices on their web site. Although I had some bad experiences with the dealer back in 2002 when I was buying my CR-V, but I know at least I can use their prices to deal with other dealers.
Anyhow, a Honda dealer in Oklahoma City (about 120 miles from Tulsa) returned my email, offered $1,000 off MSRP and asked how much do I want to pay for 2006 EX-L. I said $28,600. That was in mid August. This Tuesday their Internet Sales Manager sent me an email asking me if I was still looking for an Odyssey. I said yes and he offered $28,908 this time, but the price is only good by Friday 9/30.
I contacted a local Honda dealer and told them about the offer. They said they would match the price. I’d rather buy a car from a local dealer, so I emailed the dealer in OKC and told them about it. The OKC dealer quickly slashed $500 dollars and offered me $28,399. I called the local dealer and they said they would match whatever the OKC dealer offers.
This morning, my wife went to the local dealer to pick the color and pay the deposit. To our surprise, when my wife showed the local dealer the new offer, the Sales Manager was very unhappy and would not change the price and walked away, the other salesman who had offered us to match the new OKC dealer’s deal was “in a meeting” and “will be available in 10 minutes”. My wife waited for more than 10 minutes and decided to leave.
So I called the OKC dealer and gave him my credit card for deposit. I asked one of my friends in OKC to go to the dealership to check the vehicle. The color we picked is Ocean Mist and the vehicle had 6.7 miles on its odometer.
Our mini van will be delivered tonight. The dealer will send two drivers, one drives my new EX-L and other follows him so that he can take him back to Oklahoma City.
The final price I would pay for the van is $28,598.50, this includes their “processing fees”. I know I could have them to wave it if I play some games, but I am tired of it and it is what I thought a fair price.
Folks, this is my experiences of buying 2006 EX-L. Hope it would help those who live in sooner state.
Thank you all for posting in these forums. You have saved me THOUSANDS. My wife and I shopped every minivan manufacturer we could find; the Odyssey was head and shoulders above any other. We ended our search at the Honda dealer and contrary to my intentions, left the dealer with a quote. I rushed home to check Edmunds and stumbled accross these forums. I soon realized the quote I was given was no real bargain (31000 incuding 495 in dealer crap and dest fee vs 31,800 msrp). When the salesman called the next day I told him to sharpen his pencil; he came back with 30500. After reading your collective experiences, I held out for 29000 plus ttl, out the door (doc fees were $159). I probably could have done better, but not much better, especially in Southern Jersey. BTW, they wanted $1539 for the extended warranty (60/100000; $100 deductible). I got it for 850, then went another $100 to get the deductible to ZERO. Took my guidance on that from another forum on Edmunds. So... THANK YOU EVERYBODY. Your comments really helped me get what I feel was a good deal and a great experience. Gary
Particulars: Burns Honda in Marlton NJ. 2006 Odyssey, Desert Rock, Ivory leather. $29000 including destination charge, document fees, $495 in dealer options (wheel locks, window etching, pinstriping, cargo liner). Full tank of gas. 6% sales tax; $342 for a 4-yr inspection and tags
Sent couple of emails to all the dealers and got quotes and asking each one of them to beat the lowest price i got, so finally I purchased today for $28058 including destination charge. It was smooth. Sales manager was telling me he is just making 100$ on it, dont know if it is true. total OTD price was $30550.
That dealership is owned by Amish. Translation=not greedy. I got a great price and considered buying there since I had a family visit due in the area. Congrats on your great price and buying experience.
Purchased a 2006 Slate Green Metallic/Olive interior with RES/NAV for 32,947 + TTL.
I live in Austin and sent internet quote requests to dealers from San Antonio, Houston, Dallas and in between. Most quotes were MSRP, or 300-500 below MSRP. Allen Honda in College Station had quote of 32,947 which I thought was fair so I accepted it without further negotiation as I was tired of several months of looking and dealing with local dealer Classic Honda. I made the 180 mile round trip to College Station, had the van in 20 minutes and had the Navigation system direct me home.
Other Notes: Classic Honda Round Rock - Took our initial test drives in the 2005 Odyssey earlier in the year with this dealer and wanted to make purchase from them. In early August we attempted purchase the 2005, They started out over MSRP. I had all my info from this site and began negotiations. After an hour of frustration their best price was 33,900. Luckily we walked and made the purchase of the 2006 less than 2 months later for $1k less.
1st Texas Honda Austin would not provide internet quote or phone quote.
Has anyone had any success buying from dealers in CO at a price near invoice? So far about 1k under MSRP. And that may very well be the market price for this area but I'd be willing to go up to 200 miles away from COS.
LaundryGuy, Please pardon my off-topic question. I read in one of your earlier posts that you towed a boat with your Odyssey. I am considering purchasing a boat with 3,500 combined boat and trailer weight. I have a 2002 Odyssey with a class III (non-weight distributing) hitch on it already. Will put the PS and Trans coolers on it. However, am wondering your opinion on hauling this weight for one hour on level land regularly with the hitch that I have. Thanks for your reply, Kaziii
go4sam - Great price. The dealer still can buy groceries after he gets the $950 holdback from the factory at the end of the quarter.
Please tell me if you went through fleet managers or the regular sales team. Also, please share the name of the individual salesperson that you worked this price through.
Found out today that the mini van has the "protection package". The salesman tried to sell it for $400, but I said no. Guess he could not find a van without it with the color we picked. Anyway, we got it for free. The protection package has wheel locks, splash guards and cargo net.
I finally purchased the Odyssey EX-L with DVD & NAV. I tried very hard to haggle with the dealers in the local area i.e., Seattle & 100 miles around Seattle. Absolutely no luck, I think the market is unreal out here..
The best quote I received was from Honda of St. Johns in Portland, Orgeon for $33, 674 + tax + license
In the meantime I heard of this place called Auto Solutions (you can find it on the web) & they are based in the Seattle area. I was able to get the same vehicle for $33.484 (which included the $350 fee that Auto Solutions charges). The best thing I liked about it was that I did not have to deal with a car sales person (I had an utter disdain for them & it with this new shopping experience it got only worse).
I was able to order in a color that I wanted but will just have to wait about a month before I get my vehicle. I asked the friendly person at Auto Solutions to send me the VIN number & was able to go to the Honda web site & register as an owner
I am really looking forward to having my vehicle soon. Here is another good part, Auto Solutions will drop off my car at my home. I don't have to spend any time at any dealership :shades:

Thanks for all useful information. I could not go bed without reading them now. I am seriousely looking for EX-L RES/NAV for my wife before snow is falling. But I could not see many info from mid-west. I am living in twin city area. I got one offer $33,624+tax+processing fee. Is it fair enough? I rather like to see below $33,000. Any comments/suggestion is appreciated. Thanks!

My recollection is that folks here have reported little price competition your way, at least not in the Twin Cities area. Suggest you cast a wider net.
I got 1500 below MSRP for EX-L RES/NAV from Markley Motors in Fort Collins. That was the lowest I could get for 2006. The next closest was 1K below from John Elway, Denver
Yep, same thing on this end. Guess I'll just wait until they are not as popular as its still in the category of "I want" and not "I need"
I'm pretty well convinced its a better product than the Ford but is it really 4K better. Having only 1 dealer in Colorado Springs doesn't do much for pricing either.
Most of the dealers with good inventory in the Twin Cities area are not the best place to get a good price. If you are willing to drive as far as Rochester in the SE or Brainerd in the NW, you should have a good list of dealers from which to negotiate. Also try the dealer in Brooklyn Center.
If you are flexible on color or delivery timing, you should be able to get this van for at most $32,600.
Last night I took delivery of an '06 EX-L from Bankston Honda in Lewisville, TX. The price was $28,785. The buying experience was good and I felt as though I was treated fairly.
Hello everybody, A friend of mine is interested in purchasing a used 2005 EXL RES with only 8000 miles. It is slate green exterior and olive green interior. It is in excellent shape and looks brand new. It has the mud guards and the leather steering wheel cover. It has been in a small accident and has been fixed by the local Honda dealer. Is that a good price? Blue book value is over $29500. Thanks to all who comments...
Sorry to be the first to disagree but... no, it isn't that good a price considering risk. How much is that risk that something else is patched or not perfect as compared to buying a new one? What assurance do you have that it wasn't much worse and they did some body tricks to get it to roll straight? Bottom line is risk vs. savings, it's your decision. If it wasn't in an accident I might reconsider this position. You have to ask yourself, if it was flawless except for a ding, why did the owner get rid of it? Laws are better today but it used to be some shady operators would resell totaled vehicles at huge profits.
We have the same color combo in the Touring R&N, love it!
Just took delivery of 2006 Touring R&N from MotorInn in Albert Lea at $2200-off sticker. it was far and away the best deal I could find when I ordered it (August). send an e-mail if you would like further details.
That's at least $3000 less than you are going to pay if you got a great deal on a new 06. Factor in taxes, and its more like $4000. Like the post earlier said, find out about the accident and the reason for selling (no doubt the seller will have one ready, but try to see if it sounds legit). If it checks out, that sounds like a good deal to me.
I agree. People who are suspecious like yourself shouldn't buy it. They should spend thousands of dollars more and buy a new one.
That's why I suggested finding out more about the body damage.
A couple of years ago, I came out of Costco to find a nice dent in the rear quarter panel of the Accord I owned at the time. no note was left of course.
I paid my deductable and I had a quality body shop do the repair. The bill came to 1200.00 and the damage was undectable.
Had my car been in "an accident"...well...yes.
Was it a lesser car because of this...not at all!
This could happen to your Odyssey tomorrow and it won't make it a bad car.
"Why did the owner get rid of it?"
Again, if this worries a prospective buyer, they should buy new and not used.
But with only 8,000 miles on it? Really, you should ask anyone about their reason for selling their used car. But for an older model with more miles, the explanations come easier. Why sell a perfectly good, virtually new minivan within a year of buying it? Maybe there is a good reason that makes sense, and this is all on the up and up. But you'd be a fool not to ask. This doesn't mean you are "suspicious", just prudent. The upside for you is saving several thousand dollars on a virtually new car. That's a really good thing. The downside is blowing 28 grand on a car with problems. That's a really, really bad thing. Its just worth checking out, that's all.
Thanks to all who responded. From what the seller states, the van was hit in an intersection on the corner of the front bumper. Although the bumper and some other parts had to be replaced, there was no damage on the frame. He has a copy of all the repair work from the Honda dealer. He said that they can not make the car payments anymore as they had another addition to their family. I don't have a reason not to trust him. The van truly looks like it is brand new inside and out! I guess I will wait a little more to see if anybody else has anything to add and then I can advice my friend accordingly. Thanks...
I recently took in a perfect 2005 Odyssey that I sold new. It too, has 8000 miles on it. The owner simply decided she wanted a different color and wanted to upgrade her NAVI-DVD to a Touring at the same time.
Whoover buys this will save money and get a near perfect Odyssey.
It's either a good car or it's not. Yes, a person should be prudent and check things out. Some people are simply too afraid to buy a car like this and they probably shouldn't.
We want to buy Odyssey EX-L DVD in Madsion, WI . We are willing to go to to IL or Milwaukee. I e-mailed a few dealers and I the lowest I got was 31,195 plus tax and registration. I have not heard back from a few of them. Do you think this is a good deal? Should we wait closer to the end of the month? Thanks.
