I believe that the warranty is longer on the 2006. 5year/ 60,mile powertrain warranty vs. previous 3 year/36,000 miles.

Yeah, the Costco program was supposted to make car buying an easy process. Give the customer a decent, no haggle price that they can take and go shop!

I love it when someone brings me a Coscto price I can always meet or beat!

Just brought home my new Midnight blue pearl EX-L RES/NAV. Purchased at Honda Autopark in Cary, NC. Paid 32173.00 + 3% tax + 398.00 doc fee + 74.00 reg. Great experience. Did everything though Honda's website and got quotes from 5 dealers. Highest quote I received was for 32993.00. Honda Autopark matched the lowest price I received.

Finding a wealth of information on these boards - Thanks all.

After reading the posts I decided to email a dozen dealers in my area looking for an 06' EXL w/ RES. Two actually replied next day (Sunday, so I guess understandable; we'll see tomorrow) one with a price at 35k then dropped to 33k so I simply told her both her prices are over MSRP, call me when youre serious, etc. The next dealer called and after explaining I didnt want to play around, ready to do the deal like now... came back with her "negotiable price" or as she said "the price you can walk in the door with" at $29696 without any haggling. I was pleasantly surprised (although didnt show it) and told her that maybe we could work something out. I also told her i didnt want any bait and switch games etc. after we spoke about possibly furthering the deal. Now I have a few questions/concerns...
    1. Is that price right out of the box a bit low? According to edmunds invoice is only $550 less than that price. And she implied there was maybe a bit of room in that being that she cant haggle over the phone..
    2. If this price is true, When I show up - is there anything I should watch out for so i dont get had? I dont want this to be "lets get the sucker in and then take him for a ride"...
    3. Now I was able to calculate a price (and please correct me if I am wrong) for a 36 mo lease - MSRP 32395, Cap cost 29696, 62% residual, a .00275 money factor, and 8.5% sales tax in NY for $438.20, nothing down, taxes in, etc. Am I way off base? Dealer says destination is included and this the price + tax and tags. But she said this is the "negotiable price" twice. Is this a red flag??

Please let me know if I am missing anything in the picture, any red flags, and what would be the best steps to take next. Much thanks in advance for responses!! Would like to put together a deal by this weekend so I'd love some feedback and thanks!

Well we finally got our deal at Hagerstown Honda.....we live in the Northern Virginia area but after the horrible experience with Leesburg Honda finally were able to find a great deal. We got the 2006 Touring Odyssey R&N and they threw in the options of pinstriping, mud guards, door and fenderwell guards, all weather mats, cargo mat, cargo tray, cargo net, wheel locks and cross bar. Out the door price was $37200 including destination, processing fee, etc. Far cry from the $41100 that Leesburg Honda ASSURED us was the lowest we'd ever find! We got the color we wanted plus loaded with options we hadn't expected to get!

AHFC (Honda Finance) has just announced a Thanksgiving Special APR program on ALL models from Wednesday, Nov. 23rd through Wednesday, November 30th 2005. Honda is offering 2.9% for 24-36 months, 3.9% for 37-48 months, and 4.9% for 49-60 months. :)
  • davantdavant Member Posts: 294
    So, LOL?

I got 4.5% for 72 through a credit union, no DP. Thanks for letting the world know about this special short-term deal. Recognize that the fine print matters. Depending on your beacon score aka creditworthiness you might not qualify for any special rate or will have to pay a higher rate. I can hear the dealers now, hurry in now before they're all gone!
  • oddman1oddman1 Member Posts: 3
Where did you find this special? I went to their web site and couldn't find it. Also is this for a purchased Odyssey or leased one? Thanks.

I have been looking at this site for several weeks now - it's been very helpful - thank you!!! I have sent out several email for quote requestt via the honda website. My problem seems to be that I have a trade-in. So far the responses have been they want me to bring in my trade for an "accurate" evaluation. I obviusly don't want to drive all over the state to do this. Is this totally normal and what do I say?? Thanks!
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Yes, it's normal for a dealer to want to evaluate the vehicle. About the only exception is if the trade-in is absolutely like new with just a handful of miles.

The best way to handle this is to get some numbers locally. Yes, it takes some time but if the numbers you get a close to each other you can have confidence you'll get the same elsewhere (if in the same or similar market).

That said, an out of town dealer should be willing/able to at least "ballpark" your trade over the phone if you offer a complete and accurate description.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
They are being honest with you. Often a trade is far different than the description we got over the phone.

Be careful, or you can get highballed just to get you into the store!

If you don't like what you are offered, just sell it yourself!

FYI. I got 5% for 60 months from AHFC back in early Oct for my 06 EX. All you have to do is (if you have excellent credit) apply for one of those Peoplefirst/Capital One online loans or tell the salesperson about it and tell him and/or fin. manager to beat it. They'll usually get you about 1/4 lower or more than the rate you quote them. The dealership would rather get something than nothing in financing. Two years ago, we received 3.9% for 60 months on our 04 Ody. The fin. manager at the time was a pretty good guy and actually took time to shop around the rates. Beat my Capital One rate by a full point. Told me the GM HATED "them Internet checks" and would like to avoid using it at all cost.

How does one determine "true" invoice when dealers have access to about 6 different invoices?
  • jstephens1jstephens1 Member Posts: 38
Did you buy? I would suggest you offer 2000- 2500 BELOW MSRP then add tax

I went to a local Honda Dealer last week and said we wanted now or in the next three weeks a Honda Odyssey EX-L with DVD and that our fist choice of a car color was black. The salesman said that "no one likes the Nighthawk Black" and that he can't get it for a long time. He siad instead that he has two Odysseys in stock and troed to oush me into leasing one of those two in different colors.

I have a few questions for you guys- -

    1. Is it likely true that this major honda dealer CAN NOT get an Odyssey EX-L with DVD in the color Nighthawk Black (like the salesman represented), or is there a way that all of these dealers like the one I went to can generally get one from somewhere in the Honda inventory where dealers get cars? I am looking for approximately the next three weeks. Are some dealers betetr at getting requested cars in preferred car colors than others..should I check other dealers in the area?

    2. The second question relates to the first in part, this salesman was clearly trying to shoehorn us into leasing another Honda Odyssey EX-L in two other colors, and was trying to get us to make the lease transaction right then within the hour. He said he can have us ready in less than an hour. Aside from the obvious that this salesman was trying to CLOSE us and have us make an imemdiate lease transaction, what is the situation whereby a dealer may prefer to sell cars already on their lot rather than ordering another car from Honda that will be delivered at a later date? Do theey make more money on oens on their lot than if they need to order one...this salesman was saying that he basically could NOT get is a Nighthawk Black Odyssey, but it seems to us that he was conflicted and agenda driven along the liens o0f my questions above. We appreciate the responses and comments you guys may provide, we are new here and find this site and dialogue very informative.

    3. Any ballpark information as to how low above or below sticker price that dealers are going now on 2006 Odyssey EX-L? Also, what does Out The Door Price mean- -does that mean if you are going to consummate the transaction right now and take the car out the door, what is the bestr price the salesman will give? Thanks!
  • cpsdarrencpsdarren Member Posts: 265
    1. Black is among the less common colors, but any dealer should be able to get one by factory order or swapping with another dealer. There might be a wait involved if they don't have one in stock, up to a month or two for a factory order. Dealer swaps are faster but do require more dealer effort. So, while the price may be the same, many dealers will require a deposit. You should certainly check other dealers, especially given the treatment you had. Autotrader.com has inventory for many dealers' new car inventory, but not all of them.

    2. Salespeople don't want you to leave the showroom. A commission now is better than no commission later, regardless of the price or profit for the dealer.

    3. Depends on your area. In Chicago, some dealers sell at or below the published internet "invoice" price, thousands less than MSRP. In other areas, people seem to be paying much closer to sticker price. Out the door means the price including freight, taxes, fees and all other charges. A dealer selling for $500 over invoice with no fees is obviously a better deal than one selling at invoice but forces you to pay $1000 for add-ons and fees.

    Good luck.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Black is, by far, the least popular color for an Odyssey. Most dealers don't order any and it may be hard to find one out there.

He may have run a "locate" only to find that no other dealer in his area had one.

Of course, he/she is going to try to switch you to a car they have in inventory. That's his job.

And, he may be doing you a favor. A car/color that sells poorly when new will sell poorly later on as a used car!

Its a Ocean Mist color. Its literally brand new. Its a great car, but its just too big for me. It makes sense for big families, but too big for just 1 kid. :).

I paid 29,700 OTD and am located in Hayward, California. PS: I also purchased the 3 Row All-Purpose floor matts, whcih is included in the above price.

Question: What kind of a deal could a little old lady who knows nothing about buying a car expect to get?

Answer: A fairly good deal if she's armed with the information from this forum. I needed a new minivan ASAP, so I did the following:

    1. Got a 30 day free online subscripition to Consumers Reports through my MSN account.
    2. I decided that I could live with the potential problems listed in Consumers and in this forum in exchange the best driver's safety rating.
    3. I emailed 24 Honda dealers, through the Honda website, using my nickname, which implies that I am a male. I also used the lingo from this site to demonstrate that I had some knowledge of the product.
    4. The MSRP for the touring with RES is $37,147.
The invoice price is listed as $33,471.
I got offers ranging from $33,122 to $36,600. The lowest bid was from Clinton Honda,in North Jersey, which was too far to drive in gridlocked holiday traffic for someone my age. But I used that number to negotiate a price with the dealers closer to my home.
    5. After a little dickering, I got a price of $32,900 at the dealer nearest my home. I insisted that they add wheel locks at no charge, to make the $500 tires a little harder to steal, and also throw in whatever was already on the car(pinstriping, etc.)
    6. I refused to sign the arbitration clause. No problem. I also insisted on taking delivery during daylight hours when it wasn't raining so I could inspect the car properly. I test drove it at high speed to check for windshield noise and rattling.
    7. I had intended to pay cash, but took the 2.9% for three years instead, since investing the money at a higher rate makes sense in my low tax bracket. I didn't investigate other financing, because I really need to get the car on Wednesday.

So, that's my story. I'm satisfied with the price, which is $571 below invoice, for the exact color I wanted.

THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE! :)

Went to the dealer today - was able to negotiate a 36 month lease for an 06' Ody EXL w/ RES for $433 and $1777 total out of poclet wich included tax, bank fee, DMV fees, and first month. Cap cost i got was $30,000, MSRP was $32,945, money factor was .00275. Was happy with that till i found out that my trade in for my 03' Mazda MPV was (after haggling back and forth) only $10,250. Only 18k mileage and great condition. I really did not want to have two cars sitting in the driveway and the headaches that go along ith selling it on my own, but I wasnt happy with the trade in price. Ready to walk away and the finance manager came out and said why are you leasing and not buying? I said i couldnt afford the purchase payments and he said what about a Smartbuy? He told me he could keep the payments at $433 for 36 months, no out of pocket costs whatsoever, pay off mt $8900 left on my MPV, and give me back $500. I didnt know Honda did this and want to know if this is a good deal. I worked diligently on figuring out how to structure a lease and know I got a decent lease price, but is the $433 better as a smart buy or a lease? Finance manger said the Smart Buy was better b/c of tax advantages and since I'm trading in a vehicle it works out better. Could someone explain what th tax advantages are?? I wasnt sure and the deal was only good for tonight(or so he said) - I ended up leaving and maybe will do the deal - just need some feedback on this PLEASE - thanks.

We got a 'sale'quote for $37,045 locally for a Touring with RES and NAV in the Nebraska area. Really like the voice command integration. We haven't taken this to another dealer yet but it beats the local dealer's CarsDirect quotes. Is this a decent price or no? Debating about an extended warranty as well. This would be with 4.49 financing.
    Thank you

I just bought an EX-L for $29,500 OTD price from a San Antonio dealer right before Thanksgiving. I faxed this offer to 10 dealers in San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston (I'm in Austin). Only the San Antonio dealers replied and only one was able to match my offer with the exact car I wanted. I guess my price was hard to match and the local dealers asked me to go to get my car in San Antonio because
it was a price they couldn't beat. The dealer in San Marcos even wanted to match my later offer of $29,200 when I was driving to San Antonio, but the car had 98 miles on it and I passed the deal.

This forum is very helpful when I decided what price I should pay. Thank you for sharing the information.

    Hi

I live in San francisco bay area and i am planning to buy Honda Odyssey EX-L without any more options. What is the best deal i can get ? I got a online quote (by phone) from a dealer for Invoice price $28,258 which will include the destination charges.
Is this the best we can get ?
And i would like this forum comments on the extended honda care warranty ?
Did any you get the maintainence deals which includes something like all services up to 60k miles or 5 years or something similar.

    Thanks
    Vas
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Northern California seems to be a tough market. I don't recall anyone posting here having purchased in that area for less than invoice.

Don't see any need for an ESP for the model you want, especially given the longer powertrain warranty on the '06s.

Never have heard of this type of an all-inclusive maintence deal on any Honda, probably because their recommended service is, relatively speaking, not inexpensive.
  • vinnynyvinnyny Member Posts: 764
Yes, I bought Touring model with Nav and Res on 11/1. Here's the final deal:

    $36,647.00 + 299.00 Doc Fee + free splashguards, wheel Locks, cargo tray = $36, 946 +TTL.

I received the 3.9%/60 month financing and about $2k over Edmunds trade value for my '05 MDX. So, I probably paid a few hundred extra but made up for it on my trade. It was great dealing with Chapman Honda in Tucson, AZ.

    Sierra3,
Which dealer did you deal with in SA? I too live in Austin and will prob drive to SA to buy my minivan.

Also, when you say OTD, does that include a reduction for a trade in?

    Thanks,

    HI all,

Just found out about you guys. I am a single woman buying a car for the first time..OK I'm old but never did this alone. I got the invoice for the 06 EX-L with R & N. It was 31,123 + 550 destination and handling.(31,673).

I got him down to 32,242 including the rear cargo tray, mud flaps and cross bars for the roof rack. He couldn't meet the prices for the Honda care wrap around that the online prices were or for the 8/120 so I'll get that on my own.

How did I do? haven't totally closed the deal, this was all over the phone, as Wed is the end of the month.
  • jaylo247jaylo247 Member Posts: 10
Does the $32,242 price include doc & title fees or is it just the difference with the added accessories? It is a difference of $569. If this difference is only the accessories, you can purchase them for about $340 online with shipping. If it also includes the doc & title fee or you do not feel like putting on the splash guards or cross bars(both easy)-the deal sounds good.

Recently, my wife became tired of her 2002 Odyssey EXL and told me she wanted the new model. Based on my previous experiences with several of the local Honda dealerships in DC/MD/Northern Va, I knew that the Landmark, Rosenthal, Fairfax, etc. dealerships were for people with more money than brains who don't mind getting the usual runaround, bait and switch, "let me go get my manager" antics stereotypically associated with car salespeople. So I didn't even look around here. Several other posters on this board from DC area seemed to get great deals and good buying experiences in Southern PA and NW Maryland area, so that is where I looked.
Quotes were coming in for 2006 Touring R+N for ~37,000-37,500. Then I got a quote of 35,500 including destination, processing, etc. from Faulkner Honda in Harrisburg PA. I initiated contact with the salesman there, and he offered the car in my wife's first color choice for this great price (about $48 above invoice the way I figure it). Then he offered 15,000 for trade in for her 2002 EXL with just under 60k miles on it (about 1000-2000 above the trade in value, depending on your source...KBB or Edmunds). I jumped on this deal. The car came in about a week later (he didn't even ask for a deposit to reserve it...just said it had my name on it when it came in). We drove about 2 hours up there and were in and out of the dealership in about an hour and a half. Most of that time was spent showing my wife the features of the new car. Other than the mileage, they didn't so much as look at the trade we drove up in. Very easy and very pleasant. I had my own financing arranged, so no problems there. Then he matched the 5yr/100K written Honda care warranty quote I got from Bernardi ($746).
Overall, this was great purchasing experience (even better than when I bought my Lexus about a year ago) No bait and switch, no dogging the trade, no anxiety provocation. I would most highly recommend that anyone from the DC area who wants to purchase a new Honda and doesn't want to get soaked to invest in a drive up to Faulkner Honda in Harrisburg. You won't be sorry.

OK I'm so new to this I don't know what the doc is. The title is 45.00. Where would I get them online?
  • Kirstie_HKirstie_H Administrator Posts: 11,240
The "doc" is the documentation fee, and that varies by dealership - there's no set amount. It's a fee charged by the dealership to process your paperwork.

You need to ask the salesperson if your price is an "out the door" price, meaning it includes all fees. This will help you avoid any surprises when you actually sit down to sign the deal.

the OTD price including sales tax 8% where I live, registration and silly inspection fees charged by NYS is 35035.86.
The only fee I was given was the destination and handling fee which was included at 550.00
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
In Ohio, such fees are limited to a maximum of $100 by statute. Unfortunately, dealers take the attitude that it is a required minimum.

Although called a "documentation fee" or "processing fee" such fees are, in fact, merely additional revenue as vehicles cannot be sold without the "paperwork."
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
I think this is a pretty good price - very close to invoice given the accessories.

I bought a 2006 EX-L for OTD price $29776 (ie 28528 plus tax, tag, fee etc) last week incl following options - wheel locks, mudguards and appearance package.

However, the dealer has quoted $780 for an extended warranty for 7yr/60K miles. I feel that the no. of miles covered is less. Any suggestions? I have time until this weekend to sign up for this.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I will be buying my 2006 EX-L Tomorrow and i was planning to take the honda care warranty later either online or through some dealer (who ever gives the best price). I read that you can sign up for extended warranty before 6k miles without any additional cost and you dont have to buy it from the dealer where you bought the car.

I am planning to take 7 yr / 75,000 or 100,000 mile warranty and the online quote i got was for around $975 or $1275 (for 75k and 100k miles respectively)

    Hope this helps

This price sounds good. I'd also ask for a) out-the-door price and 2) the colors they have in stock for this price to avoid any surprises.

We are looking to buy either an EX or touring in the next 30 days. So far neither of the local dealerships appear very willing to negotiate much. Does anyone have any great buying experiences near invoice in the east or middle tn, ky, nc or northern ga areas?
  • vasuvasu Member Posts: 12
I did go to the dealer today to check the colours and we decided to go with Sega Brush Pearl with Olive leather interior.
Even though dealer didn't have this colour he is getting it from a nearby dealer.
    Out the door price is around $31,035 ($28,258 + 8.75% Tax + 249 License + 45 Doc Fee + 8 some tire fee).

We will be signing the paper work tomorrow and pick up the car.

I will let you guys know how it goes and the name of the dealership where i got it from tomorrow.

    Thanks

    Hello,
I just purchased a 2006 EX-L with RES at invoice in Louisville, KY. $29,696 with $550 destination charge. Their doc fee was only $199 and title fees were $52. It was really a no haggle deal. I can get you the info if you would like. I am sure they would do the same for a touring. :)
  • jaylo247jaylo247 Member Posts: 10
Check my post above about the Honda Care EW through Bernardi. You can get a genuine Honda Care warranty, 7yr/80K $0 deductible for $796. I just faxed them my paperwork today for a 06 EX-L RES (8yr/120K), they promptly called me to confirm my fax and that my application was approved by Honda (all apps are subject to approval given mileage and such) and that I will receive all the documentation from Honda in about 4 weeks. Check them out, I'm glad I did. Saved lots of $$$$ thanks to other members for talking about Bernardi. ;)
