Are you saying $31,000 otd OR $31,000 PLUS TTL?
    Thanks

I just bought a black exterior/ivory interior Odyssey from Open Road Honda in Edison NJ on 30 Dec,05. The OTD price including NJ tax and tags was $31,200. :)
I had a superb experience overall. Got a great internet quote (that actually came down on the day of the deal) that nobody could match (DCH Academy just said no- they could not match and I respect that). I printed the instaquote out and drove to the dealership with my downpayment. I was assigned a senior salesman, who we totally admire. No pressure, no upselling - got me 3.9% Honda financing for 4 yrs, called my insurance - in all did a 5/5 job. Threw in wheel locks and 3yr free oilchange.
Did not get a good price on the trade-in ($500 below what we wanted). But anyway we didn't have the time and patience to sell it online or otherwise.
I understand the sale event is coming/has come to an end at Open Road but they are very price competitive. I was surprised that they remained cool and focused to their customer needs.
Highly recommend. If you need insights beyond what can be posted here, feel free to reply to this post.

I just bought an Odyssey EXL for 29,000 with muds. I e-mailed quote requests in the Portland Metro area and the best deal I received was $29,400. After telephone calls and negotiations, McMinnville and Beaverton Honda were the only Dealers I could get down to 29,000. I paid about 29,230 including license and title fees. There is no tax in Oregon. I was wondering if I should have contacted Seattle area dealers as well until I saw this posting. I ended up getting the car from Beaverton Honda. They did not want to go down, but they finally did.

I recommend remote locations as well. McMinnville being further from the city center seems to be making some of the best offers to get customers out there. Also, bargain hard and ask for accessories included in the price.

It seems that it is more difficult to get great deals on this minivan in the Northwest than in other parts of the county. I checked the regional markup adjustment and it is greater in the Northwest than in other parts of the country. My theory, based on observation and not scientific study, is that the Northwest is less focused on status symbols than other parts of the US and are thus more willing to get minivans instead of SUVs, Audis, Volvos etc.

    Hi,

We also live in Northern Virginia and bought our 2006 Odessey EX-L RES from Faulkner Honda on Friday Dec 30th. After doing extensive research on this edmunds site. Purchased through the Faulkner Internet Link for $2000 - $4000 less than any offer from Northen VA. Took two hours to drive up (easy drive Rt 15 through Maryland and into Pennsylvania). I went to school in Harrisburg and knew the area well. Our price was $29,400 + 3.17% VA sales tax ($932) + $45 tags. They also matched the Bernaldi HondaCare 8yr/120k Warranty @ $1281. Most of the VA/MD dealerships wanted extra fees for Processing, Freight, Wheel Locks, Floor Mats, etc.. With Faulkner, there were no hidden fees and they included the Wheel Locks and Mats for free (did not even have to asked for these extras). Our paperwork was ready when we arrived and all we had to do was look them over and sign. Most of the time spent was going over the features of the van. Kids love the DVD and the wife loves all the vans features. I was extrememly happy with the buying experience, no pressure and received by far the lowest price from any local dealership. The two hour drive was well worth the trip. Also, we took advantage of the 2.9% Honda financing.

    Hi,

To comment further on my recent post 11546. I wanted to reply and possibly help the folks who may live in the general Washington DC area thinking of purchasing a new Odessey. Prior to purchasing my new 2006 Odessey from Faulkner Honda in Harrisburg PA, I checked this Edmund's site looking for ideas and procedures for getting price quotes. We have never purchased a warranty in the past, but decided to add the 8yr/120k 0 deductible warranty. Originally I received an email quote from Bernaldi Honda for the 8yr/120k warranty. When I mentioned the warranty price quote, the Faulkner Internet Sales rep matched the price of the warranty - no questions asked.

Listed below are some of the other quotes I received from local Northern VA dealers. Some dealerships give Out the Door prices and others provided quotes that did not include the extras. Prices may have reflected end of year clearances. Hope this helps.

Bill Page Honda (2nd lowest quote) - $31,285.64 Out the Door Price

Hendrick Honda - $32,244.39 Out the Door Price

ROSENTHAL HONDA - $29,449 plus fees. Fees are: Virginia Tax: 3.17% (Taxes vary for other states) Virginia Tags: $64.50 (Tag charges vary for other states), Processing fees: $299, Freight: $550, Appearance package / dealer installed options ( if applicable)

Fairfax Honda - Fairfax Honda Internet Price: $30,145.00
Additional Charges: Freight $550.00, Processing Fee $289.00, VA Tags $44.50, VA Tax $992

Landmark Honda - $29,998, plus tax, license, document preparation charge, finance charges, destination charges, appearance package and PDI fee (used vehicles only), where applicable.

We just bought our very fisrt "new" car ever....and no buyers remorse! We bought a slate green Odyssey EX-L RES for $28,949. The price on the EX-L RES with no extras (ours has roof rack and a rubber tray type thing that fits into the back seat well to protect it) was $28,575. This price included destination, no games at all. I got it at Grand Honda in Elmhurst. I have an email quote for Joliet Honda for 28,927 for an EX-L RES with no extras, and I believe they were willing to honor that price through today, and the financing special ends tonight. Good luck to everyone still shopping, I love my Odyssey :)

Sounds like you got a great deal--I'm in the DC-area and can't get anyone lower than $31,900. Had an offer made by a salesman at College Park Honda for $31,500, but when I came in, his manager "pulled him off the deal" and said he could not sell it that cheap.... So, I'm looking for a better deal. Anyone w/ any ideas--willing to go up to 100 miles out. Thanks!

If you could contact internet sales at Honda of Mentor just outside Cleveland and pick up what you want at the prices quoted earlier on this site ($30, 725.25 + taxes in your state) a $1200 savings may be worth a ticket to Cleveland. They would probably pick you up at the airport.
    Worth consideration.

If you are willing to drive a little bit you could get the EX-L w/ Nav and Res in Charlotte, NC. The drive is about 5.5 to 7 hours (depending on traffic). I bought my '06 EX-L w/ Nav/Res for the internet price of $30,873 at Crown Honda in Charlotte, NC. Check out their web site (located via the Honda web site) and e-mail their internet sales manager to see if you can get the same price or even cheaper (since you're from out of town). Probably worth drive if you can save a $1000 compared to the DC area.

OK - so I just started looking for an odyssey. According to the Edmunds site here the invoice on an EX-L is 27,708 with 550 dest charge that's 28,258. An EX-L with RES invoice is 29,146 and with dest of 550 that's 29,696. So dealers are willing to sell the EX-L RES for 28,575? That's over $1000 below invoice plus dest charge. Are the Edmund's invoice prices accurate? What is the invoice price on 2006 EX-L and EX-L RES Odyssey - with or without destination charge?

Glad you got a good deal and hope to do the same - I'm in Chicago too.
  • jstephens1jstephens1 Member Posts: 38
Re: Edmunds prices you need to take into account various dealer incentives or holdbacks from the manufacturer. The edmunds prices are accurate but you can figure taking off another $1000 below invoice due to these incentives and leave off the $550.00 Dest charge. This is your starting point so your observations are indeed correct.

Best deal in Illinois or Indiana? Best price so far $37595 plus tax. Has anyone done better?
  • spikeso05spikeso05 Member Posts: 10
What do you mean "leave off the $550 Dest charge"? Does this mean that this is not a true cost to the dealer?
  • jstephens1jstephens1 Member Posts: 38
It means if you want to pay invoice and destination charge go ahead but if you read the earlier posts from Chicago market, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, most of Ohio and some southern states, they are bargaining and often successfully from the bottom up rather than down from the invoice or sticker.
Bottom line, you can find dealers who will absorb that charge but if you wish to pay for it, go for it. I'm sure they'll gladly take your money.

That sounds like a good deal here in Georgia. I am in Atlanta and am looking for the same vehicle w/ RES & NAV.

Please tell me which dealership you dealt with.

Did you get any mud guards, all weather mats, roof rack, etc. with this deal?

I assume your tax was around 6%, correct? I am in Fulton, where mine would be 7%

    Thanks for your help.
  • spikeso05spikeso05 Member Posts: 10
I am just trying to figure out what the true cost to the dealer is. I find that information helpful when negotiating. (The more information I have, the better.) I agree that you shouldn't negotiate from invoice down. That is why I started my bid at $1500 below invoice + dest, which was well below any sales I had seen on this forum for my area (SF Bay Area), for my model. In the end, I got a price below invoice + dest. I was just curious about the true cost to the dealer.

Bargaining from the "bottom up" is not an exact science, as there is no clear "bottom" here. I guess you could always bid $0, but I wouldnt expect many dealers to respond.

We actively started looking for 2006 EX-L. Willing to travel within Colorado/Wyoming/NM to get a good deal similar to the other posts from TX and Ohio. Anyone care to share their buying experience with any dealers and prices paid for this vehicle around here??

I don't know where in Illinois or Indiana you are located but I live in SC and got my 06 Touring w/NAV/DVD from Faulkner Honda in Harrisburg, PA for $35,500 plus tax and $45 for temporary tag. I paid $200 for them to deliver it to my door (approx. 675 miles away). They deliver free in a 400 mile radius. Hope this helps. ;)

(Fade in to scrolling vertical banner with star background)... Use the tools Luke! Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away...there was a website called Edmunds. They offer used car prices, reviews, forums, and even (get this?) new car pricing information! It is pretty accurate if you want to determine true dealer cost, invoice, you name it. The TMV may be a bit high depending on your bargaining prowess but no one should be ashamed to buy anywhere from invoice (or below) up to TMV. I see alot of somewhat panicky effort here to search for exact numbers when what we can all get in 30 seconds for free is darn close. Placing some much effort into saving a few hundred dollars over 4 years might not be worth your time (pay yourself you hourly earnings plus 'stress' compensation when buying a vehicle, LOL).

I researched what is supposed to be the no BS dealer cost through a non-profit magazine I can't mention, before buying. The Edmunds prices were within $100. Other web tools weren't far off either.

Happy trolling, don't be afraid to walk, get it in writing,

    -Cheers

I must really bring out the pretense. I certainly have used alot of tools, and have completed what I feel to be a successful deal. You really didn't get my points.

    1) The previous poster had implied that the destination charge was not a true cost to the dealer. I questioned this. In his reply, he corrected this, while implying I didn't know how to properly negotiate.

    2) I would like to get as much info as possible before going into a negotiation. The more accurately I can know the dealer's true cost, the better prepared I am. (Don't we all want to start from the "bottom line", whatever that means?)

    3) Having all this info in the end saves me time, and money. That was the whole reason for me coming to this forum. To get info so that I can prepare my opening bid. I ended up emailing 30 dealers, which took all of 30 minutes. I got 4 voice mails. I called back all 4 dealers, which took me 1 hr. I called my local dealer to see if they could match. 15 more minutes. Called back one of the original 4 and verbally accepted, with an email sent to me to confirm the out the door price. Took me about 2 hr tops to get $200 under Edmunds listed invoice + destination charge. That wasn't much effort, and I saved about $1200 from purchasing from my local dealer, who was selling around Edmunds TMV. I could argue it took less effort this way, since I did all the negotiating from home, and had dealers bidding to me rather than going into a dealer's premise on his turf and haggling with them. So yes, the "effort" was well worth it.

I tried the internet quote route, best price I got was from El Cerrito. Purchased the Minivan from them on 12/22. They had it on the lot with 7 miles on it.

I can highly recommend these guys, no hassle, no pressure to buy the dealer profit "add-ons".

Price paid was around $33,300. OTD total came to $36,250, with sales tax at 8.25%.

Wife and 2 year old love the van. Drove it up to Yosemite on Xmas day. After driving an A4 2.8 with quattro, I was pleasantly surprised with the handling of this van. Lots of power and great handling on the hills/mountains.

Hope this post helps a few of the bay area buyers. Most of all stay away from Steven's Creek/Sunnyvale/Santa Cruz, they wouldn't budge from MSRP, although if your looking for a non NAV-RES they will deal.

Menlo Park honda even gave me a sarcastic e-mail back saying they wouldn't sell a "vehicle of this stature" at my initial offer price of close to invoice.

    Spikes,

Grand Honda ran a advertisement in the Chicago Tribune that said all prices included destination charge and the only other fee's were $55 doc fee plus tax and license. The 2006 Odyssey EXL-RES was $28,444 just like the ad said and you could get it without extra equipment in a variety of colors. Bottomline it was that easy.

  • spikeso05spikeso05 Member Posts: 10
That sounds like a great deal. But I am not in the Chicago area. I am in the SF Bay area. I only jumped into the thread to figure out if destination charge is actually a true cost to the dealer. Thanks for the info though.

I contacted a bunch of dealers in & around Denver Metro area and the best I have done for EX-L is 29K + tax. Seems like lot more than what others have been getting in other metro areas. Any one else from Colorado who wants to share what prices they have paid around here for a similar vehicle??

Florida is a tough market. Dealer "fees" there are typically about $500 so your price is north of $33,000, a high number compared to many areas of the country.

The only way you can know whether this is a good price is to shop, shop, shop and get dealers throughout the state competing against each other.
  • mdpappymdpappy Member Posts: 1
I just ordered the above for the Costco price of 33900.

I got it from Klein Honda in Everett and had a great buying experience. NO pressure. Lower taxes in Snohomish County as well and no B and O tax added on. :)

After much negotiation with many different dealers around the beltway I started negotiation based on an OTD price.
$28,232.55 (selling price including $550 freight)
    $913.95 (tax)
    54.50 (Tags)
    299 (Processing Fee)
    ===========
    $29,500 OTD

This included an appearance package of wheel trim, door trim, mud guards, wheel locks and pin stripes. Rosenthal Honda in Tyson's Corner, VA also threw in 2yrs free oil changes to close my deal. Maybe minor, but shows of good effort I think.

    -------------------------------------
    More on buying experience...
I emailed around 10 dealers and called around...even visited 4 dealers in and around the beltway. Missed my best deal because the trade offered was too low. Finally found a good price to sell my current car to Carmax (+5k) over dealer trade!

We wanted Slate Green with Grey leather...found 3 in NoVa, 2 Slate/Olives in MD. MD dealers have lower processing fees...I basically got to $28,258.43 including freight from Herson's Honda in MD, then add $100 processing...gets to $29,250.68 OTD. Sport Honda was very close and very nice on the phone. Also had a good experience dealing with Brown's in Arlington. I preferred to work with Koons in Manassas as they are closest to my home, I showed them prices from other places and they wouldn't budge...stayed ~$1000 higher than anyone else. Hendrick Honda in Woodbridge came in second lowest initially, but really low-balled my trade...then a few days later would not honor the original quote, increasing ~$600.

My second choice for convenience was Rosenthal Honda in Tyson's Corner as its near my work. They had the color I wanted and were very competitive on price. They threw in the extras mentioned above and met me better than halfway in the difference on their original quote and my lowest quote. The Internet Sales manager was very nice and easy to deal with. We did spend about 2 hours from walking in the door to driving out (1hr after they closed on Saturday). Everyone was very nice and took their time to explain everything. The sales person went through the factory warranty and highlighted the owners manual. Then he walked us through most of the major features of the car and showed us how to do many things. I'm glad he took the extra time to even show how the center seat belts worked as it might have taken me a while. The sales person was even knowledgeable of the vehicle explaining the benefits of the VCM and ACE (after the sale was final).

I had offer of $27,100+fee+TTL for 2006 Odyssey EX-L from Sheehy Honda but we purchased EX for $25,350+fee($290?)+TTL. I had read enough about VCM and could not take risk of vibration. We purchased on December 31st. The VCM is successful in Japan in low HP engine. Honda torque up same engine to get higher HP in USA. The credit goes to Edmunds.com for deal because there was one post on December 29-30 that they can go $1500 below invoice on highend model (touring etc).

We just paid 28,500 for an EX-L. We got a decent trade in on our Jeep Liberty and they threw in the all season floor mats. If I subtract the value of the floormats then we paid about $42 over invoice. We went to Valley Honda in Monroeville.

I really do not recomment that added warranty.
i was a mechanic for over 20 years and for a honda or a acura to ever have a problem that would warrant spending that much for the warratny is not to often.
    quote taken from Gov link
the emmision warranty covers alot of the parts For 1995 and newer model year vehicles, emission control and emission related parts are warranted for the first 2 years or 24,000 miles of vehicle use. Specified major emission-control components are warranted for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use.

that warranty covers a ton of parts.and with normal oil changes every 5K your not going to run into any problems..
this is why the resale is so high on these cars "they dont break"
  • chaozzchaozz Member Posts: 6
Price was not as great as i would have liked
paid 28253.00 for the EX-L that included the DST charge..
then was tax+License, out of 6 dealers this was the best i could do even with emailing everyone, others would go a little lower but would not budge on that $550 DST charge.
    Pacfic Honda in San Diego,
finace guy would not let up on the warranty stuff.other
    than that great place.

First off, I know that Edmunds has similar information to CarsDirect.com

I have been looking since Jan 1 for an EX-L Res & Nav here in the southeast. I can find no dealers to come anywhere beneath $2000 over invoice...best offer at $33,900 ($2200 over invoice).

I notice on CarsDirect.com, that they claim to sell the following:

    EX-L for $60 less than invoice: $28,198

EX-L Res for $60 less than invoice: $29,636

    EX-L Res & Nav for $2200 over invoice: $33,900

Is this simply a supply & demand issue? I know that NAV is a $2200 option retail, but the lack of ability to negotiate to invoice and the $2200 option equate to a $4400 increase in price over the EX-L Res.

    Anyone have any insight?

Over the New Years weekend I bought a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX for $26,102 (it was advertised that price at several dealers in town) with the special 2.9% financing (36 months). Total out-the-door with tax included brought it under $28,000. All of the dealers tried to sell me the traditional dealer add-ons, but I refused. For example, some wanted $500 for a pinstripe (salesman admitted that it only cost $20 to put on), $600 for the environmental protection package (coat of wax I think), $1,000 for the "power protection package" (includes wheel locks, mud guards for tires, and cargo tray in back - each sells separately for under $100 off of the Honda website), and $300 for tinting the front windows (back windows already come tinted).

I bought from Lute Riley Honda, though I visited John Eagle Honda, David McDavid Honda, and called several other dealers. John Eagle was the first place I went because they were closer and they promised to match the advertised prices of other dealers, but when it came down to it, they could not get within $500 of the price and after three hours I walked out realizing that they misled me about willing to match prices. David McDavid Honda tried to include some extra charges, but they honored the advertised price within a few minutes and we almost bought from them, except they didn't quite have the color we wanted so we held out just a little longer.

Bought an EX-L for $27,900 sales price (includes destination charge). With TTL & tax, the OTD price came to $31,022 (includes free tint for front windows and splash gaurds). Tempe Honda dealership. By the way, quite a few Phoenix dealers are willing to sell/match this price.

I am just starting the process of buying a EXL, RWS/NAV in the Chicago land area. I plan to use the internet. I would love to hear what the best strategy is while using the internet. Do you use a blanket e-mail to all dealers, or do you send it to them individually? Do people start with the invoice price and say "can you match it"? Basically, I would love to hear about successful strategies that anyone can share especially in the Chicago market.
