Thanks i'll get them up soon :)

Krotine, that flash thing you made is awesome!! I wish i knew how to do that :( hehe.

I just tried to send them to that address, but I got an undeliverable message saying your server wouldn't allow a file that size to come through. Listen ... I've got a bunch of stuff going on today at work and I don't have time to send each one individually to cut down on file size. Can you get with Jason and see if he can e-mail 'em to ya? Thanks a lot, and if I don't get around to posting again before 3:30, everybody have a great weekend!

Looking forward to MAPP NOEL -- the first-annual MAPP Christmas Party!!! (Hey -- why not?!)

While I agree fully with those who feel it wasn't the thing to do, in a similar position I'd have done exactly the same thing, and I wouldn't have regretted doing it at any point in this lifetime. Payback is..

Even though I wasn't able to attend I was happy to see what an apparently rousing success this year's was. Kudos to Meade!

Check this out : My son just traded his ZX2 on a new Proto 5. Racked up 1000 miles pretty fast. As is his habit he always changes oil on a new car @ the 1k mark.

Took it to his neighborhood buddy/gas jockey. Get this, the filter requires a "special" torque limiting tool to remove/install the filter AND a special filter only available @ the Mazda dealer !! Oh yes, Mr. customer we have those special removal tools in stock if you wish to change your own oil, CA-CHING, $100.00 bux please. Oh , the filters, yeah we got them too. How much ? Uh, I think they are $20.00 or so !! Please make a appointment to bring in your car, have a nice day !

My son says the owners manual bears this out and it urges the owner to take his/her car to the dealer for all oil changes. Ha, I bet they do !!

If this IS true, what a screw job Mazda is attempting to pull off here.

    Your comments/experience please.

Uh...$20 for a new oil filter is a rip off. My local Mazda dealer charges me $5 or so. You can get Motorcraft filters from the Ford dealer too that will fit the Protege. I've read about the special tool in the owners manual. Luckily, I already had the tool.....the tool is my arm and my hand.

Maltb-what do you have to say about this one?
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
You can usually get in the ballpark by hand-tightening the filter on and then turning about 1/4 turn with a regular oil filter wrench.

You can also mail-order OEM filters from any web retailer for about $2.50 each if you want a Mazda-branded filter.

They're just trying to flush the till at the dealerships for something as simple as an oil change. Mazda's not the only make that tries this BTW. At least you CAN get aftermarket parts for it (unlike Honda Civics upon a time, which used a proprietary-sized and shaped battery that you could get ONLY at a dealer for about $100).
  • floridianfloridian Member Posts: 219
mazadafun et al: Just as I thought, just one more attempt on the part of the GREEDY dealers to fleece us poor saps out of a few more bux ! It really didn't make sense to me that they would try to monopolize the oil change biz.

Speaking of "special" batteries, didn't the Miata require a special battery as well when they first came out ? A friend of mine had his car laid up for over a month because of the "propriatory" battery deal that you could only get @ the dealer and were on "back order" for weeks and weeks. I think the current cars use a std. battery.

I'll give my son a "heads up" on the filter deal. His wife really got on his case over that one, you know the old "I told you not to buy one of those damn import cars" LOL !!

In my experience, and from what I gather from several road tests throughout the 90's, Mazda unquestionably makes the worst automatic transmissions of any automaker. I once owned an 89 MX-6, which downshifted harshly at inappropriate times in normal traffic and was often indecisive. I noticed that road testers have noticed this on every MX-6, 626, and Millenia to date. My question is, do these negative traits extend downward to their entry-level model, the Protege? I am specifically asking about the previous-generation Protege, which ran from 95-99, since I'm looking to buy a 98 ES automatic. But comments from anyone who has driven any automatic Protege would be appreciated.

Anybody have a comment on the Mazda transmission question? Are Mazda transmissions any good, bad or what?
  • bilsteinbilstein Member Posts: 3
Any 2002 ES owners? How much did you pay? I was at a dealership today, and was told I could get a 2001 with 0.0% for a couple hundred over invoice, or a 2002 with 1.9% and they would "work with me" on the price. Assuming I could get the same price for the car, I'd prefer a 2002 because I would probably make up the interest difference in resale value (probably sell the car in 3-4 years).

So, how close to invoice have you gotten on a 2002 ES with premium package? Hopefully I'll be getting a new Pro one way or another within a week! :)

I have a 93 manual trans with 123k on it...that i drive the PISS out of and i haven't had any problems yet. Just change your shifter oil every like 30-40k miles and you'll be fine. MY sister has a 92 LX with like 90k and its automatic. It has had no problems with the tranny at all.

I've heard of people blowing their mazda trannies, but thats if u drive like a moron ;) (just like on any other car)
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
Bought used at 55K, now at 70K, flawless, and I'm not a light-footed driver.

Anecdotal evidence is just that, as has been pointed out before. How many people do you see that stop in the street and extoll the virtues of their flawless cars (I might, but do wish to stay on this side of the looney-bin walls). Its usually only people seeking solutions to car problems, and prospective buyers that frequent discussion boards! (Us friendly Protege folks excluded, of course, we love our steed :)

As for the 626 - the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder auto transmissions are made by the venerable Ford Motor Corporation! Mazda B-series trucks - no prizes for guessing they're rebadged Fords (and run as such). Millenias - a quick glance at the board shows no real transmision complaints, or a pattern thereof.

Anecdotal - have friends with automatic 92MX-6 (100K+) and 93-94 LX (120K+) - both run flawlessly. There's a 97/98 LX and a 2000 ES (both auto) in my aprtment bulding, and I've spoken to the respective owners - no problems! A friend that I helped with her car shopping a couple of months ago independently (go figure) picked a 2001 Pro ES over a Civic EX :-p

Don't abuse it, and maintain it well - it WILL last!
  • windowphobe6windowphobe6 Member Posts: 765
Most Mazdas seem happier with sticks, it seems to me, but the automatics can be dealt with.

The '98 Protegé, if I remember correctly, is the last one with the F4A-EL, which is a shrunken version of the G4A-EL that appeared in the '88-'92 626.

    The 626 V6 hasn't been, um, blessed with a blue-oval tranny.
  • mmx6mmx6 Member Posts: 18
Are you the same Windowphobe on Yahoo? If you remember, I was LSC400 (now I'm CrunchyCookie98). Anyway, do you have any way to verify that? Because if the Protege ES's transmission has any of the same programming as the 626/MX-6, FORGET IT.
As for the 626/MX-6, did its transmission EVER change since 1988? (or even 1982?) I noticed the same specific negative comments from everywhere about Mazda's automatic (which only came with the V6, as you said). Consumer Reports said it "downshifts into first gear when accelerating from low speed." Popular Mechanics' survey said automatics that shifted roughly or erratically was the #1 complaint. Road & Track said in 1998 "if there was one fault with the previous 626, it was the automatic transmission". Car And Driver made some negative comments on a 94 ES, then in 98, regarding the new model, they said "Most importantly, the automatic has undergone extensive reprogramming to exorcise the indecisive antics that plagued previous Mazda auto boxes." In their test of a Millenia S, they also noted "a better brain is needed to cure its indecisive kickdowns." Edmund's logged similar complaints about their Millenia S. One drive in my old MX-6 can confirm all of these traits.
Is all hope lost for the Protege? The only comment I ever heard on its automatic was from Consumer Guide, who said regarding the 90-94: "automatics cut performance and mileage and do not shift well"; Edmund's briefly mentioned "ill-timed gear changes" on the 99-01 model.
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
One mans "Ill-timed gear changes" are another man's "power available on-demand" and "tranny shifts into the right gear to keep the rpms in the sweet range" :-)

I much prefer this to the Civic LX and EX which refuse to shift for a highway-speed passing maneuver on a 2-lane road if your life depended on it! Hmm, your life does sometimes depend on it.

Boils down to tranny ratios and tranny shift programming. And the eternal fuel frugality versus available power debate!

None of those comments or reviews point to tranny defects or failures (except the venerable 4 cylinder 626 transmissions made by Ford!)

    My $0.02

The G4A-EL dates back to 1987, was revised for 1988, really revised for 1993 (it was at this point that it got the F infix), and got a minor update in early 1995. Before 1987, the 626 used the F3A, a fairly straightforward 3-speed. The changes in the G/GF were, in my opinion, more mechanical than intellectual. As for the F4A-EL in the Protegés, it is substantially the same as the 1988-92 G; it's just crammed into less space.

My experience with the GF (which some of you have read on Yahoo!) is not unlike that of the magazines: it's just not the brightest tranny around. The CD4E doesn't strike me as a whole lot smarter, but given the fact that it's fitted to a low-powered car, it's harder to get a feel for it unless you drive the living whee out of it. (Which I do.) Not having driven, say, a V6 Contour, I couldn't say whether the V6 626 would have been better off, shift-logic-wise, with the CD4E, though most Mazda fans would cringe at the very thought. I suspect they will also cringe when they hear that the Mazda engine-control system in the four-cylinder 626 is basically a reboxed Ford EEC-V; in terms of getting engine and tranny on the same page, it was the path of least resistance.

The Millenia S uses a Jatco transmission (JF403E), a sister to the Nissan RE4F04A you can see in recent Maximas. I wonder if they're making this kind of complaint over in Datsunland.

The AT in my '89 323 runs OK. It's a bit rougher shifting from 1->2 when I gun it than it used to be. I had to have the belts adjusted once at about 90,000 miles. It's now at 137,000 miles.

The AT in my '99 LX runs fine most of the time. There is a funny point when you let off the throttle at low speed and then jam on it a second or two later, it will stumble hard (as if hitting a short, sharp speed bump). This seems to be a programming error, as it won't do it if I wait long enough or gradually increase the throttle. It won't do this when I accelerate hard from a stop. This happens only between 1&2. No problems with the other gears.

Since I've discovered the situation that creates the stumble, I've managed to avoid it since (only happened 3X). Still, the car's so fun with the MT, I'd go with that (unless your SO gets car sick when riding in an MT-equipped car).

When you get familiar with the shift points, you can actually get good performance out of the AT, as someone else on this board has mentioned a few times.

I have been on vacation for the past couple days. I left on Friday morning, and just got back on yesterday. I went to NC to look up some family members. Not a bad trip, but I did miss my Protege (rented a Grand Vitara), but now back in it and all is well.

I had the blue fender marker lights installed as well, and they look really neat! :) The person who did it did an excellent job on them. Very happy with them.

After driving that Suzuki, it felt so good to get back into the Protege. I zoomed an off-ramp at 55 this morning that was pegged at 30. :) ZOOM ZOOM!

You mean you drove RIGHT THROUGH my city and you didn't let me know? We could've met for lunch or something!

Hmmm. Well, then again, I don't know if I'd want to been seen with someone driving a Suzuki.

This makes me unworthy of a post here.

Sure did. Went right down 95. I did think about you when I saw the exit for the Powite parkway though. Does that count for something? :)
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
... unless you drove on the Powhite and paid your 50 cents like a good little boy! Every little bit helps my paycheck!

Seriously, though ... if you come through again, give me a call! You've got my cell phone number, for cryin' out loud! And same goes for me -- when I get up to Baltimore again (don't hold your breath), I'll look you up.

Paul: Did you get a ticket yet from them blue sidemarkers? hehehehehe

Nope, no ticket yet. I haven't been driving my car all weekend though. My friend drove back from your place to mine because I was tired from driving from NC. Then we went out last night, and he drove again because I had a couple drinks. :) But we haven't been stopped yet for the markers. Everyone here at work likes them as well.

  • panamaltd2panamaltd2 Member Posts: 162
I hope you told those Echo owners how wrong they are. Ask them if they have gone out and just looked at there cars lately. Just to remind them that their car looks like a shoe box on wheels that could tip over at any second! :)

Let's not use this discussion to disparage members of another discussion - please. We are all entitled to our differing opinions.

You folks clearly are very pleased with your choice of vehicle and you are certainly entitled to express that here. Please allow others to express their pleasure with their own choices in their own discussions without ridiculing them here. Belittling other members for being pleased with their vehicle purchase decisions is not what Town Hall is about.

And this topic is not about the Echo, so there is no reason to discuss it here.

Anyone buy snow tires or a tire/rim package yet? Tire Rack says that you can use 205 tires (rather than the stock 195's) but my dealer's not sure.

What were the three top reasons for purchasing your current car? I'm assuming if your a regular in the Mazda Protege Discussion you own a small sedan of some type. I'm interested in, what sold you on your current car!

I'll go 1st. These were the qualities, I looked for when shopping.

    1.) Roomy Interior-
    2.) Value Pricing-
    3.) Attractive Styling-

    Thank you in advance!

Three top reasons why I bought my Pro:
    1. Looks sharp yet is practical
    2. Fun to drive
    3. Enthusiasm demonstrated for this brand in this forum (maybe this should be my #1 reason)

And the top reasons from the Head Office in Calgary, Alberta are (not in any particular order):
    1)Great handling
    2)Price
    3)Sharp looks
    4)room
5)I needed a car and didn't want the hassles of
    buying used

I called Tirerack yesterday (and a couple others)and what they came up with for my 2.0 ES is steel wheels, 15" at $32 each, and Michelin Artic Alpins, 195/55 x 15 at $78 each (they had some cheaper yokohama's, but he claimed the Michilins would be quieter-I hope so!). With $58 s&h it comes to $498. I'm calling later today and order them. Winter. SIGH!!!
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Yes, I sent them to Krotine. I'm wondering what he did with them, because I haven't seen them on his site. I also sent them to vocus. One of you guys, please e-mail my photos to Wil!

The three reasons I bought my Protege are probably different from many of yours. Here goes:

    (1) Personal experience in a head-on collision
    (2) Satisfaction with two previous Proteges
    (3) Value, features and performance for the dollar

    There ya go!

I bought the TireRack recommended 15X6 steel wheels with P195/55QR-15 Michelin Arctic-Alpins.

$514. shipped from IN to VT.

Tell me -- How long did it take TireRack to deliver your order? I'm planning on buying some Yokohama AVID T4s from them in about a month, and I've never dealt with them before. Also, how does TireRack honor warranties? If the tire fails, do you have to ship it back to TireRack? Can you get road hazard warranties and stuff like that too? Sorry, a bunch of questions from a TireRack newbie.

    Good interior room
    Quality of construction
    Reliability
    Good handling
    Value
    Economy
    Safety
    Looks
Visibility (mine, out of the vehicle)
Manueverability (as in, how easy to park?)
Servicibility (the Corolla is better here, IMO)

I guess I'd have to place safety-related items higher (ergonomics of cabin & controls, crash-worthiness, visibility, handling), although reliability and economy are important too. I won't even consider a vehicle that gets less than 25mpg these days. Luxury items (power windows & locks, moonroof, etc. are of very minor concern to me).
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The reasons I ended up with a Protege a second time around is:

    1. the room inside the car (for its size) is great. Now it seems all the small cars are using the same philosophy, but we know where it came from first.

    2. styling. I love the classic looks of the Protege. Mine has been mistaken for an Audi A4 and MB C-Class several times.

    3. pricing. I got alot of features in both my 1999 DX and my 2001 ES for a very good price.

As far as the discussion goes, I agree with you Meade. Something should be said to both sides on the matter. Since it has already been said to us (as usual), it needs to be said in the Echo topic.
