David, Did you import your car in Europe? If so, in which country? I'm thinking of doing the same after about one year, and I'm very curious about emission or other changes. Also, will spare parts be available (at all)? I'm assuming that the warranty is gone in Europe, right?
    Thanks a lot!

Yes, the models built for the Canadian market can be registered and driven in the USA. HOWEVER: Canadian vehicles have kilometer speedos. If you change the speedo to Miles per Hour, you create big time problems for yourself when you sell the Ody down the road. Under Federal law, you must certify "mileage unknown" on the transfer document. How many buyers will be willing to pay for a van with unknown mileage? I understand the State of Washington is trying to help resolve this problem by having the State Police certify the kilometers at the time of change-over. That might help. But for most owners, it will be a problem.

Next: Canadian Odys do NOT have the Honda warranty, i.e. USA Honda dealers will not service the vehicle under any Honday Corp warranty. You also cannot purchase the Honda extended warranty.

Dealers who import Canadian models (which are more available than US models) usually offer a third-party warranty. The advantages/disadvantages of third-party warranties are the topic of other discussions.

In summary: while the Canadian units have heated outside mirrors, plus a couple of other small differences, I suggest that you think very carefully before buying a Canadian van as a US resident.

(And before anyone jumps on me, yes, I know that both models are made in the same factory. The Honda factory in Canada makes all the Odys until the new USA factory in the south comes on-line in February 2002 (if I remember reading correctly).

I picked up my GG EX last night. @ MSRP + $ 45 (doc) + lic + tax.
Two emails and got a quote @MSRP from Internet manager (Yvonne) and was on waiting list. Waited for 4 weeks, EX was in yesterday afternoon with 5 miles on it and we picked it up last night. I could have gotten the EX two weeks early, but I was out of office that day and didn't get her message until next day, previous van was sold.

Sales (Norman) was very courtesy from inspect, test drive and went thou all the paper work and finance part done in 2 hours last night.

We did purchase lojack with Odyssey. I had a pre-approved people's first check/draft in my hand for 60 months and 7.15% interest. They were able to match and found a better rate 6.45% on contract. On contract, lojack listed $799 but we paid $400.- ($8.- more per month. $8x60=$480 amortised). 7.15% was the best deal I can find thru internet, credit union and my local banks. Since finance guy was able to get a better deal they deserved to make more money.

If you are looking for MSRP in So Calf and won't mind waiting.

Contact Internet Manager Yvonne Mason or Sales Norman To.

I am picking up my new GG(Fern in Canada) LX on Monnday from a dealer just south of Calgary.Very easy to deal with, after the test drive I went right in the owner's office and dealt directly with him(no middle man...very nice).Anyways,I got my LX for $1400 off MSRP and then added about a $1000 in options. The dealers in Calgary were only willing to take a few hindred off of MSRP.

Must say, that was definatley the best buying experience I have ever had, none of the games dealers like to play.Haven't taken delivery yet,but so far so good.

    In this post I will:

    1)Disagree with AC SMITH - post 1456
2)Provide process to purchase Canadian Odyssey

Number 1 - All of the issues set forth are correct, but note that all except the first are created by Honda Corp. Also, note that NAFTA was put in place between our countries to promote free trade, which improves our standard of living. Honda Corp. is working against both the US and Canadian governments by putting back a tariff that they worked hard to eliminate.

Having purchased a Canadian Odyssey while being a US resident, I found the process simple and legally supported by every US and Canadian governmental agency (note the references below to forms and process on both sides of the border). Honda is the only impediment here. All in all, the issues do not outweigh the benefits - and I would (will?) do it all over again for the $5KUS in saving for my 1999 EX.

Number 2 - A couple of things you need to know if you are going to execute this. First, the easiest way for the Canadian dealer (and yourself) is if you have a Canadian drivers license. Though this may seem unreasonable - for many of us, the Canadian border is only a short distance away. A CND DL negates all of the barriers Honda has put in place (for now). Before you go to pick up the car, you need to follow the instructions on the NHTSA and EPA web sites to get letters from the manufacturers. This is a no big deal thing. One e-mail to the manufacturer (using contacts on the web sites) and this was done. You will need this when you come across the border on the US side. The only other thing you need is insurance for the vehicle before entering the US. This is also a no big deal thing. You only need the VIN number to make this happen with your local agent. Your insurance agent should also give you a temporary Canadian insurance card - shows that the car is insured even though it is in Canada.

Once you get to the border you need to stop on the Canadian side and get a Certificate of Destruction/Exportation. This will be used in getting back GST/PST. Pick up the GST and PST rebate forms while you are there. Next you move to the US side and inform the agent that you are bringing back a car and need to go inside to get a Customs Form 368 (collection receipt or informal entry). This is used to prove to your state registrar that you brought the car into the US. At this point you are running on Canadian plates and registration. At some point in the future, you need to get your car registered in your state. With form 368 this is no big deal. The only variable is how much the car cost in US $ so they can compute the state sales tax due (at least this is how it works in NY). Now you are running US plates, registration, insurance et al. Nothing else to do but enjoy your Honda.

As far as the mileage thing goes - I guess I will cross that bridge when selling....which isn't for a while.

By the way - the driving lights get me a discount on my car insurance and the heated mirrors are the nuts.

I was wondering if anybody has any good information on dealerships in the Massachusetts/Southern New Hampshire area? I am interested in buying an Oddysey but I am a little concerned about the waiting lists. We have found a dealer that will put us on the list for $500(refundable) wait should be about 4 weeks? They sell at MSRP and only add options if wanted. I have heard some dealerships load the vehicles with options because of the high demand.

Can anyone recommend a dealership in my area?
  • schwemanschweman Member Posts: 2
I have a 97 Mere Villager( in good condition) that I will be trading towards a new 01' Oddy EX. The local dealer has 2 EX's on the lot. My question is how much do I ask on my trade? I'm sure I'll pay MSRP on the Oddy, so shouldn't I push for higher trade-in value on my vehicle.

HondaNorth in danvers on route 1 north is a decent one, at least for me they were. They sell at one price price and don't load with options. The wait time is probably the same as the dealership you mentioned. Sales people at HondaNorth were low pressure, finance dept. was too. Service department runs pretty smooth and has fixed a couple of teether problems with little trouble.
    Good luck

I just test drove an Ex today and it had a pronounced pull to the right. Has anyone had this problem lately and is this an alignment problem or a steering problem. It happens right as soon as you step on the gas.

TSB 00-067 very helpful. If in fact the van needs the sub frame tweeked, should I pass on this van and wait for another? Very disconcerting to buy a new van (where safety is my # 1 concern) and then have this problem in the back of my head.
  • kalajiankalajian Member Posts: 43
I wouldn't wait-the van is difficult to find "in stock" right now and if the van needs the adjustment, it will be covered by the warranty and is easy to do. The frame is not "tweeked", the sub frame assembly is simply loosened up and adjusted to correct the right drift, then re-tightened. Take the tsb to the dealer service department if they won't/can't fix the problem to your satisfaction. BTW, my right drift was most noticeable when I was on the freeway, but I don't recall it happening when I first stepped on the gas. Maybe your problem isn't the dreaded "right drift", but something else in which case you might want to pass on this one...

Sorry for any duplication, but given that 2002's come out in September, is there any negotiating room on the MSRP? I'm in St. Louis and was quoted a price of $26,880 for an EX. I have a trade in that I really want to avoid selling myself, so internet buying isn't an option. I certainly appreciate any comments. I'd hate to pay MSRP or higher for something that'll decrease in more than incrementally in value in just a month.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
Do you have Carday or Carmax in your area? They'll either help sell the car or buy it outright. Don't cheat yourself out of a deal on the trade just because you're unwilling to sell it privately.

MSRP isn't bad on the Odyssey. You can do better if you are willing to travel, but it may not be worth it.
  • sbpceapsbpceap Member Posts: 67
I just read in USA Today Money section that Honda's new Alabama plant starts pilot production this month (July) and goes into full production starting this November. This may negate any 2002 price increase by increasing supply. If above posts are correct, however, and 2002 Ody's will have 4 wheel disc brakes (now only available on Chrysler vans- which I just rented this week and I am very impressed with quiet, plush ride & design), the additional safety and effectiveness of disc brakes would justify a minor increase in price, in my opinion.
  • tims63tims63 Member Posts: 14
Unfortunately, we don't seem to have the types of used car buying services you indicated. Apparently, St. Louis is behind. Anyway, the Carmax site said appraisal is based on Kelly Blue Book, which is also what at least two of the Honda dealerships I spoke with used.

I suppose the only way I'll get a 2001 under MSRP is if enough people decide to wait for the 2002's. Supply/demand dictates. Thanks again.

I think I just got one heck of a deal on a 2001 Odyssey. Must be because they are liquidating for the 2002 models.
Right out of the blue my local dealer calls me and says they just got a special allocation of three Odysseys due in in two weeks. Price: $26840.00 for the 2001 EX with splash guards and roof rack rails. I already had made a deal with another dealership for a 2002 EX which I thought was descent.

    2001 Honda Odyssey EX:
Negotiated Price: $29000.00 includes options at the bottom plus
    1. Sales Tax $1450.00
    2. License & Title $85.00
    3. Documentation Fee???? $129.00
    Total Price: $30664.00

    Installed options:
    1. I-VES $1695.00
    2. Trailer Hitch, Wiring Harness, Transmission Cooler $498.00
    3. Tape Deck $210
    4. Block Heater $98.00 (you need one where I live)
    5. Splash Guards $108.00
    6. Roof Rack Rails $101.00

Let me know what you think.

Definitely try CarMax if you can find one nearby. We had a '99 Windstar we wanted to trade in on an Odyssey. I checked the tradein forum on this site, and they said expect about $14,500-15,000 on tradein, and around $17,000 to sell it ourselves.

The dealer where we bought our Ody offered us $11,800 for the tradein. I didn't even bother to haggle with their seriously lowball offer, I just decided to sell the van myself. Out of curiosity, last night I took the van to CarMax, and they offered me $16,000 for it! That's only about $1000 less than I thought I could sell it for myself, and it needed about $500 worth of body work before I would try to sell it. I quickly made the deal before they changed their mind.

As for discounts, don't count on it. In fact, we found that there was a shorter supply than there was a few months ago when we started looking. I heard from several dealers that they would be placing orders for their last allocation of '01 Odysseys soon, and then the 02s wouldn't be available until mid September. I also heard rumors about a price increase on the 02, and the rumored improvements didn't matter to us, so we jumped on an '01 while we had the chance.
  • mikehaneymikehaney Member Posts: 14
That looks like a pretty good deal. Looks like you saved about $550 on the options. That is about the only way to get a good discount on the Odyssey - buy a bunch of dealer options and negotiate on them.

We ended up buying just the EX w/Nav at MSRP. The main option we wanted was the IVES, and we talked the dealer down to $1695, but the dealer we bought from is about a 45 minute drive from our house and didn't have the IVES in stock. We didn't want to have to make more trips to get the IVES installed, so we decided to get it done somewhere else. I ended up ordering the IVES over the Internet for $1350 and will install it myself (I did a lot of car customization stuff when I was younger, and the IVES install looks like a breeze).
  • mommyof4mommyof4 Member Posts: 46
I had i-VES installed AND 7500 mile check done for $1600 out the door. I negotiated on and off for about 2 months before finally having dealer agreed to this price.

Thanks to this board for all the info. The SF Bay area is still really hot for Odysseys.
    Here's my experience:

    - Used internet/phone for all my negotiations/inquiry. Very efficient.
    - Got as many local dealers to quote as possible. Best I found was $500 over MSRP, but dealer has waiting list. Dublin Honda, and I think Stockton? will do it at this price.
    - Have had success with Larry Hopkins Honda in Sunnyvale in the past, but was disappointed that a 3rd time customer like myself would be given the same price as everyone else: $1000 over MSRP. What a disappointment
    - Ended up purchasing from Robertson Palmdale Honda in Palmdale, CA. (60 mi. NE of LA, in the desert!) Note they are the 8th largest Honda dealer in the US, and they sell 80% of their Odysseys to the SF Bay Area.

Paid: MSRP + TTL = $29,435.80 for Dark Emerald Pearl EX, No Navi, No add ons.

I drove down and picked it up. Other options for Bay Area delivery are:

    - they will drive it up to you for $150
    - finance manager (forgot name) flies private plane, and heard he will pick you up and fly you down for $500 (OK, that's alot, but no commuter airport close by)

Was painfull to pay so much, but they got the van for me in less than a week. With 2nd baby on the way, just wanted to get it over with.

    Here's the dealer contact info:

    Jim Maze, Internet Manager
    (661) 265-6000
    sales@hondascheap.com

    Good friendly service, no hassles.

Just got off the phone with Mike Haynes at Alton Blakley in Ky. As most of you are aware, they had discounted the vans at $1000 off M.S.R.P., then came down to $500 off M.S.R.P. I found out today that they are opting for full MSRP on the 2002 Odysseys. I guess that all good things must come to an end. I wonder if other Honda dealers around the country got wind of customers flying in and being picked up at the airport to get their discounted Odyssey? I'm sure that Honda couldn't allow their dealers to become disgruntled over this practice. Oh well, we are now back to the game of come buy our van at MSRP....if you are lucky.
  • wakerswakers Member Posts: 1
I have received information that Alton Blakley Honda is still willing to sell 2002 Odyssey's for $500.00 below MSRP. I was told that they do not have the pricing on the 2002's yet, but that whatever the MSRP is I can buy one for $500.00 below that. Apparently, they have already taken some deposits for a few 02's at that price.
  • mharris9mharris9 Member Posts: 9
Since I have used this forum to post bad news, I must now retract and give good news. Just got another call from Mike Haynes at Alton Blakley, he informed me that they would be honoring the $500 off MSRP. I don't know for how long, nor do I have any details, but I wanted to be fair to them and let everyone here know what had changed. I think it was great of them to call and let me know. I now know why they have such a tremendous reputation with their customers.

My wife and I shopped every metro Atlanta dealer with all attempting to gouge. We bought from Chris Warman at King Honda in Auburn, AL (334/821-7283). Make sure Chris knows "Bamafan" sent you. It took a something near a miracle to get me to set foot in Auburn so I told him I would spread the word. Chris was a pleasure to do business with. Here's the deal.

MSRP, period. Just add sales tax and a minimal processing fee (less than $100). They don't put anything on it you don't ask for, need or want. What's more - they deliver it to your door. They also will throw in a couple of freebies that Atlanta dealer are charging huge amounts for (such as mud flaps, mats, wheel trim, etc.). This more than offsets the process fee. As of last week they even occasionally still had 2001 models still arriving that were not spoken for. You would have to act fast for these! E-mail (sbbamafan@msn.com)me for more info.

Bought an EX Navi in popular Granite Green Metallic in late June. Walked into dealer and said we would pay list price. Dealer said no problem. We placed our order and we were told that it would be, on average, 45 days until delivery. Our Navi arrived in 4 days. We paid list ... no add ons. Painless. End or story.

I highly recommend Honda of Lisle.

I am interested in learning more about that.

    Steve,

The dealership is Heritage Honda of Towson and their web site has two coupons available. One is for everyone ($100 off MSRP) and the second is for people who have to drive a bit to get there. The first coupon ($100 off) is available at: http://www.mileone.com/mileone/coupons/100.htm
(note that is says $100 off best negotiated deal, however they sell their Ody's at MSRP). The second coupon (up to $200 off) is available at: http://www.mileone.com/mileone/coupons/200.htm

I've had the $300 off confirmed for me based on my distance from the dealership. I've been dealing with Jerry Murray who has been great other than the fact that I missed out on my September allocation because they released them on a Saturday and I wasn't reachable via phone then.

Anyway, Jerry's been great. His contact information is: Jerry Murray, Internet Manager, Heritage Honda of Towson, a MileOne company, 410-337-9700 x138, jmurray@users.ccleads.com

It would do me feel good if you could tell him I referred you. Note that their September allocation of 2002's is already spoken for (in less than 20 minutes).

    Good luck.

Try Colonial Honda in Petersburg, VA (804) 733-0700. Just a few blocks off the whyte street exit I-95. I have had good experience for the last two years with their service dept and am now working with Belinda in new car sales for a 2002 EX. They have assured me MSRP, no add ons and $99 processing fee. For anyone willing to drive to the Morristown/Knoxville, TN area, Honda of Morristown has a pretty good price on the 2002 Odysseys. I talked to Chris Lykens and am getting a 2002 EX at MSRP-$500. Try their website at www.hondamorristown.com Chris handles their internet sales. I'm not sure of the number, but it's at the website. Tell him Michael Harris spoke well of them. So far, it's been relatively painless. I tried several other dealers, but they insisted on playing games. I e-mailed the dealership and told them what I would pay, Chris called me back and I feel it was a good deal. Alton-Blakley would have sold at the same price, but the drive was much farther for me. From what I know, they are a very reputable dealer and Chris was a pleasure to work with. I'm expecting my white EX in October, so I'll let you know.

Purchased our 01MB/EX-Navi thru a great person (Dave Campfield) and fine dealership Burne Honda in Scranton, PA. It was a 165 mile (one-way) run from where we live in s-central PA but well worth it. If Scranton is within your "range", I recommend you give Dave a call at 1-800-822-2110 and see what he can do for you. The Ody is nothing short of OUTSTANDING. Picked ours up in June and have 4k+ miles already and only 3 days away from beginning a 6.5k cross-country round trip. Highway gas milage has been in the mid 20's from day one with nary a worrisome "clunk", "slosh", or "groan". Already have an appointment at Honda West in Las Vegas for the 7.5k "check-up" and am planning on many years of enjoyable Odysseying. Also have a '94 Civic Sedan EX (162k) and '90 Civic Ex Hatchback (254k). An '83 Accord given to a daughter is still on the road with 300k+. Honda builds good ones!!! Best Luck de Hawk

Hi there...I just got my 01 Granite Green Odyssey EX on Friday, August 3rd!!! It was nearly 16 months since I placed the order through the United Buying Service (UBS) here in the Northern Virginia Area. I got on the list for a Canyon Stone Silver EX back on April 24, 2000...yes that is 2000 and not a typo. When I got on the list through Brown's Arlington Honda I was told that I was looking at at least a year wait. I called them twice over the 12 month period to check in and make sure that my name was still on the list, and to tell them that I wanted to change to a Granite Green EX when Honda stopped making the Canyon Stone Silver. Can't say that the reps at the Honda dealer I spoke to where all that helpful, and one was outright rude, so I ceased communications with them and went straight to my UBS rep Carla. Carla has her stuff together and always had the list handy, and was willing to give me the latest on where I stood in line for my Odyssey. Around June of this year (14 months after I got on the list) I thought that I would check back in with Carla, and find out if i had moved up any. She said that I still had about 20 people in front of me, and that it would be like September before I would be close. I told her to note in my file that I would rather just wait for a 2002 since they would be out around that time. She did so, and I figured I would just continue to wait. Then on Friday morning, I got a call from the Head UBS rep at Brown's Arlington Honda, and he asked me to call him back. I did so, and he told me that 3 EX Odyssey's had just arrived the night before, and was I interested in a White one. I told him that White was the only color I did not want, and he said, well I have a Granite Green Odyssey that I was going to sell for Retail, but if you want it, you can have it. I said great...let me swing by there after work to take a look at it. Dropped by around 3:00, looked the van over, and told them that I would take it. He said great lets go get the paperwork out of the way. That took all of 20 minutes...UBS is great...it is all prenegotiated prices. I was in an out in an hour and they were very friendly and not at all pushy about the fact that I wanted no dealer add on options.
    The prices were as follows:

    UBS
    2001 Odyssey EX: $24354.00
    Destination Fee: $0
    New Vehicle Processing: $0
    Virginia 3% Tax: $710.62
    Tags (2 years) : $116.21
    Options (none!): $0

    Total: $25200.83
    _____________________
    Retail (non-UBS)
    2001 Odyssey EX: $26400.00
    Destination Fee: $440.00
    Virginia 3% Tax: $805.20

I've just started shopping for a 2001 EX in NJ. First dealer started the "ask" at MSRP+$4000. (Interestingly, their internet sales office quoted a no-hassle price of MSRP+$2000.)

Another dealer's internet sales office quoted MSRP+$1600. I'm taking a pass on both "deals".

I find it totally outrageous that the "ask" is still so high, especially in light of the fact that the 2002 model will be out end of this month.

Any NJ owners out there who can recommend a fair dealer who won't overcharge on 2001 models?

After following this forum for months we finally decided to take the plunge and order our Odyssey. Following the advice of one poster I emailed all of the Honda dealers in NJ/Merto NY and Eastern PA. The only NJ dealers who answered and offered MSRP were Island Honda in Manahawkin, NJ and David Michael in Freehold. We opted to order ours thru Hillside Honda in Jamaica, NY for MSRP because the wait seemed shorter and they are actually closer to our home in north eastern NJ. Burne Honda in Scranton also offered us MSRP and seemed very nice in their communications with us. I found it interesting that most of the dealers in northern NJ either never responded to our emails or basically laughed at us when we told them we would not pay over MSRP. Anyway- our new van is due in next week and I'm glad that our journey is almost over. I hoped this helped the other NJ Odyssey seekers.

Kay Honda in Eatontown and Island Honda in Manahawkin both offered 01 EX at MSRP. Had good dealings with both sales but decided to purchase at Island Honda based on personal convenience alone. Ordered in early May and it arrived last week (one month earlier than expected). Still in the early stages of ownership but so far everything is positive. Will keep all updated.
