An EX-L in your market should come in at $26K (or less) including destination and doc fees.
27,836 otd with no accessories noted
27,940 otd with cargo mats, muds and wheel locks
28,071 otd with muds (they have sold an ex-l to someone else on this forum for 27,315 so i'm ever so hopeful to match that from one of the above)
This is fascinating to me. I have to say first that I so appreciate the knowledge on this board. It's so timesaving to not have to reinvent the wheel. I used the 'template' posted a few days ago in cargirls discussion when she was trying to negotiate for an ex-l w res/nav. i can't remember the name of the person who posted it but THANKYOU. It saved me. Even though dh is great negotiating some things (he's a lawyer)....cars, not so much. And I suck at it. I used my email addy but dh's name (since guys get better/more serious offers as irritating as that is).
Offers (all otd, everything incl) from 27,836 to 30,085. It was amazing to me how opposed some were to:
1)give me an offer at all
2)give me the offer in the form I wanted it (OTD, then a breakdown....most just gave the base price then said, plus tax, title and fees).
3)many made a point to slam other dealers (usually the ones with higher prices to start wtih took this tack).
The lowest price is the one I least wanted to deal with....as in, bad experiences with the service dept have pushed me away. But honestly, everyone I know that's bought from them has loved *purchasing* from them. The second lowest is outside my metro area, but I don't care....i have no problem traveling, or having them bring the car in, or meeting them....the second lowest also made a point to tell me that they incl muds, cargo tray and wheel locks as a matter of course.
One yahoo was so opposed to giving me a quote (i should have dropped him in the first round) but i kept encouraging him. "I don't want to waste my time, market research shows that 95% of buyers just want out of area quotes so they can take it to their local dealer for a price match". When I explained our situation (never have bought from the closest dealer, always go for the best price...which so far has been 1 h away, 5 hours away and 2hr away- he's only 30-45 min away) he said 'fine, against my better judgement I'll do it. But I hope not to have my trust in you violated" O.M.G. spare me.
I'm cutting and pasting his comments and sending them in the email survey to Honda. I was also getting Nissan quotes, but they were just as bad. I coulnd't get any of them to give me an otd quote minus the 3K dealer cash that's currently avail on the Nissans. Not one. And I'll be letting Nissan know.
Anyway, after some initial nervousness regarding how high the offers were (high 28's) for an ex-l no res no nav, I've ended up quite pleased by the lowest 3.
thanks so much for all of your help and expertise! w/o it I would have been buying off ebay and still overpaying!
k :shades:
Hey it's me - cargirl. That guy with the advice WAS AWESOME!!
Hilarious that we are in similar sitches...my DH is an attorney too. Happy to pay whatever - and me bargain shopper to the end. Yipes.
You rocked on the prices!! Amazing. About $1000 under my best.
I too had the most bizarre responses - mostly as a girl (I did it both ways)...including a response under guy address right away and waited 4 days under my own from the same dealer. Hmmm...And why can't they break down the pricing?? How hard is that? One said just add 10% to the selling price and there is your OTD. Ummm, really? Yuck.
I was happy with my pricing until I saw yours!! Wow. Where are you located?
Also, I thought cargo mats and wheel locks were standard - yipes. Now what?
Anyway, am going in with the DH this weekend and see what he can do to get the car. Dealer I want to deal with (Mr. 4 day) has yet to submit a hard quote - at all. But the dealership says that they will match or beat any price.
Do I have to deal with the internet guy - he has not done anything for me except say he will match a quote. In the beginning I gave him a higher number, as the price we wanted OTD and he said there was nothing he could do. Now that I have a quote in hand he seems to be able to do it.
Any input from anyone out there? Do I have an obligation to deal with him? Can I deal with someone off the floor? Does the dealership care? I am sure the salepeople do but really, can you at least try and earn my business?
Good luck with your purchase K and thank you donkeypunch for all your wisdom.
P.S. Boy, us girls sure are long winded.
Why would you want to do business with such a store at all?
Stay away from dealers that play games - period.
Best I've gotten so far via e-mail offers is ~$32700. Actually, I'm not sure if that includes destination, so guess it probably doesn't.
What are other folks seeing? Thanks in advance!
based on the info i've seen here wrt pricing in atlanta, it seems like i'll probably end up otd (*everything* incl) for low $27's incl muds, cargo tray, and wheel locks.
what did you end up getting OTD for your ex-l res/nav?
k
if you can search for a post by donkeypunch1 right around sept 4th, you'll get the best car buying info *ever* incl a template to use for emailing with dealers.
using it, I emailed over 20 dealers in atlanta and surrounding areas (into AL and TN) - pretty much a 4h radius.....i've had great results so far.
some didn't respond. i assume they didn't have what i wanted ito specific color/trim level. some responded right away with various quotes. only a couple gave me the *type* of quote i asked for which was *totally and completely* OTD - no possibility of additional fees.
Many responded 'come on in, have you had a test drive yet? i'd love to show you the vehicle' blah blah blah. donkey said to ignore those. I couldn't leave well enough alone:) I wanted my quote.
Anway, soon i'll be responding to the lowest four, and to the others that while higher, were kind enough to not d*ck around and did give my the type of quote I asked for from the get go without additional pestering from me.
the four lowest are w/in 200-800 of what i think is probably the bottom number for my area (incl 7% sales tax).
k
I then asked for the lease price and got the 29,795+ the etch/accessories and TTL. 36mo 15k/year. With no money down, 491.33, with 2k, 460.78, 3k, 430.22/mo. They said the money factor was 00174 and the residual was 53%.
I then checked another dealer for an internet quote Their vrhicle price was 27,204, presumably with TTL.
Somehow I think I'm getting the runaround from the first dealer, although they are closer to home. Incidentally, a few weeks ago, I went to yet a third dealer near work on an internet response, They wouldn't quote a price until I got there. They matched the 27,200, but wanted to add destination and TTL. Needless to say, I crossed them off my list.
Any thoughts?
Any quoted vehicle price should include the destination charge inasmuch as the MSRP does - it's just part of the price of a vehicle.
Well, once the quotes started coming in we sat down and really thought about what we needed.
We are probably going to end up going with an EXL - just like you!! We have the portable DVDs for now...maybe will get the headrest ones eventually.
Looks like ours is in the low 28s OTD so that's why I am saying you got a great price.
yeah! I think we might be seeing regional price differences. I wouldn't have ventured to go as low as the lowish 27's if it wasn't for emails i was reading here regarding purchases at curry and hennesy here in town.
re: donkey's rec to get it in *writing* right at the end that 'this is the exact number, no other fees and you have this exact vehicle in stock" etc etc. absolutely. will do.
i think i have a private buyer for my car. my lawn guy wants it. he says. LOL....it's just not in good enough shape for a trade afaict. and it's been in the paper and on craigslist. not a nibble.
it's a 2000 ody. ex. that was the first model year of the new larger style with sliding doors. at the time, they didn't offer leather *period*. we had leather added and mechanically we've taken meticulous care..incl new brakes, 4 of my fave new michelin tires, new radiator as of 20k ago and more.
cosmetically? h*ll on wheels. doors don't work well unless you know the tricks. carpet has tons of stains/spills. just detailed it today (prof) and still looks awful imo. lots of dings, little dents, scrapes. never an accident but many a run in with a trashcan, dh side swiped the garage door pretty good, the carpool families car (o.m.g.), the mailbox.
not quite sure where to go pricewise on that. any input greatly appreciated:)
k
The other quote I got was for a OTD price of 31,400 (includes everything) - I would like to know if anyone has been able to get a better price on a ODY R&N ? Is there still room for the price to go down ?
I told my lawn guy a firm $2500. From what i'm reading on another board here, it sounds like kbb is about 2k to high anway.... it'd be good for the lawn guy and me. He just did $700 worth of work and is interested and willing to just subtract that from the $2500, so he'd give us 1800 cash. i feel good about it.
If he changes his mind, i'll take it back to carmax tomorrow and will feel good about that too;)
K
k
I have $31,200 something for invoice minus holdback, and then you subtract the $2000 dealer cash, for $29,200.
Add taxes, tags, and registration, and $31.4K sounds about right.
I never got to finish my thought on this....things have been, um, distracting lately. LOL. Life with children, yk. Homeschooling....dogs jumping the fence and running after the neighbors. sigh.
Anyhoo, I do think it's partly a regional difference. ppl have mentioned here that dealers pay different prices in different locations.....
Part of it is that I did get quotes from 26 dealers and in my email I let everyone know that I was getting quotes from a large radius....and that *no*, I would not be simply taking my quote to my 'local' dealer to price match unless he was the best from the outset. I stated that I had purchased a car from 'x' dealership when my ody was purchased....and that place was 5h away from me....and that our more recent purchase 4y ago (element) was an hour away).
I was clear that I would go with the person who was willing to give me the incentive to do so from the outset and no matter what, i wouldn't play dealers to get to the lowest, then in the end just take it down the street. I want to thank (by purchasing) the sales person that's willing to give great customer service.
We've had a couple of holdups (couldn't find the title to my car.....friend's baby is due anyday, had a false alarm last night and i'm her labor support person) but when i do respond to the initial offers with my bottom line ($27615 incl muds, cargo liner, mats, locks), the only ones who will have the *opportunity* to match that number (which i got here from board searching) are the ones who
1)responded immediately with an actual number....ie none of the crap about 'have you driven it yet, what can i tell you about the odyssey, have you seen it?, when can you come in to talk about it? (the local guy responded with the best base price and it does translate into the best otd, but he woudln't give me otd to start with and only includes mats)
2)preference will be given to those who responded not only with a quote, but with what I asked for which was a totally OTD number with no additional suprises at purchase. so far, the likely candiate is the seconds lowest guy, an hour away from me. responded politely, included a picture of the car sitting on their lot (to show me they had my color choice in stock - ie no bait/switch) and automatically included cargo liner, locks, muds and mats.
3) i won't go back and forth, playing dealers against one another. either they can do it and want to do it, or they're playing games with me. since i don't like negotiating and 'dealing', i was clear about it in the first email and i mean it.
it's very very important to me to support great customer service.
it turns out that we tangentially 'know' the sales manager at curry through our rabbi. dh wanted to take our best price in there to see 'what he could do for us'. i flat out said no. i know what is pretty much the best price and after some ppl have worked to get there with no dicking around, i'm not going to go screw them out of a sale. they negotiated in good faith and i'm not going to pull the rug out from under anyone.
besides, i like the idea of supporting the smallish, still local dealer versus one that's gone national. the smaller guy has to work harder to stay in business. it's something that is important to support.
"One said just add 10% to the selling price and there is your OTD. Ummm, really? Yuck"
to one of those i said, "I want to buy a car. It's becoming clear that you don't want to sell me one, which is fine b/c there are 24 other dealers in the metro radius that I'm searching who *do* want to sell me the car. If you change your mind and are interested in selling me a car, let met know. I'd love to have a totally out the door quote in writing >>
"Also, I thought cargo mats and wheel locks were standard"
ime, it varies. some have plainly said 'no accessories'. some have said 'mats' or 'front mats'. some have said 'locks and mats'. only my second lowest came it and locks, mats and liner *and* in a real actual otd quote. that
>
so why do you want to deal with him? I'd rather fly to sacramento to buy from a dealer who gives good cs with no bs than buy from 1/2 mile down the street to be treated like crap.
>
i think you do have an obligation to deal with him *if you stay there*.....but maybe that's just me. honestly though, i wouldn't, under threat of death, deal with that *dealership*. i'd work with the one who is working with you and giving you quotes and at least trying to play fair.
K
I got an offer of $28K OTD (including tax) but they wouldn't give me 2.99 or 4.99 APR.
Is that a good deal? I'm trying to get $28,000 with 4.99 (60mos). Is that doable?
here in atl, it looks like I can do around 27.6k otd with muds/wheel locks/mats/cargo liner (some don't incl these things or includ only some of them, not all). there is someone here who got otd at 27,315 here in atl but that was in a 6 v 7% sales tax county.
you, cargirl and donkeypunch should go in together on a deal. might be able to do even better;)
k
I got a price of 25,500 +TTL as me - girly girl for an EXL.
We did have to match prices - because we did not want to deal with a dealership that only gave us a base (the best) and no OTD.
Luckily, our local nearby dealer said they would. I feel as comfortable as I can with a car purchase because they were willing to work with us (despite no response guy) and because the alternative was dealing with a dealership that just tosses a number out there and then "plans to get us on the accessories".
I totally understand your viewpoint on supporting the local little guy - I wish I could but I have the DH budget and I wanted THIS car so I had to "make it happen".
Thanks again for your words of wisdom.
Good luck with your Odyssey!!
I am also in the Los Angeles area and am looking to purchase a Honda Odyssey 2007 EXL. I would like to know which dealership and salesperson you talked to for the $25590 price.
Thanks!
of course dh couldn't find the title (I'm sure it's somewhere at the office.....um, yeah, with the 'piles on the floor filing system' that should be easy to find;p). so USAA is mailing us whatever they need to. hopefully we'll have it in a couple of days to move forward. lawnguy was ready to go. had his pile of cash and everything! was trying to give me money with no title. heck, now that i think of it, i should have taken the money, given him the car and just caught up with him in a few days on the title.
here's the thing though: now i'm starting to feel like i need nav.....if only for the backup camera. the presence of a backup camera would have prevented 95% of the damage that is present on my current ody. dh is so opposed. I *so* want it. there is an '06 at our lowest price person (curry honda). dont' know the mileage....there is a crack in the winshield, no plusone seat, but otherwise perfect. might have to investigate their bottom line price. the cost of fixing the windsheild (or having them do it) and the cost of the plusone seat.
kbb says trade in in 'excellent' condition is 24.7k to 25.4k depending on what mileage i searched (12k and 25k....i don't know the mileage). i did account for leather, nav, dvd, moonroof etc. i can't imagine that the dealer could actually have more than that in it could they? i'm thinking i should be able to get it for my otd 27615 target *with* the glass replaced and the seat (dep on the cost of the seat). or even less. it otherwise looks brand new.
K
What do you think of the pricing? My next quote is 25995 w/ splash guards(199) and wheel locks(149)+TTL...what part of no options was unclear? And wow - do those have a silver lining or what?
I was surprised by how many people were reluctant to give an OTD price. But, I took the "master's words" to heart and insisted. Ok - I tried to insist. Well, at least it weeded out a lot of players. That's one of the reasons we aren't going directly with the lowest player. Still has not given an OTD price!! Crazies.
Still working on logistics of signing papers - when we can get in to sign etc (I make the deal and DH signs on the dotted line) and hopefully all goes well from here on out.
Thanks again for all your help!! My DH thinks I am insane for all this (I have charts, notes...a plethora of papers) but I am thrilled - because otherwise we would be paying $3000 more to the first yahoo that gave us a price. (I think it was actually more than that. Yipes.)
I don't think I'll stop stressin' about this though until the car is in the driveway ...but it's gettin' there. :shades:
do they also know that you're willing to go out of town for it? are you? your hassle sounds like the nonsense i got from the nissan dealerships. i couldn't get one to give me a hard number. one keeps writing me 'i've tried to contact you but have been unsuccessful. please let me know if you've received my quote'. i keep writing back, 'i never received a quote from you, i received a request to come test drive the Quest. I don't want to test drive one. I want to buy one. To do that, I need an OTD quote with every number down to the penny so I can have the $$ in hand to execute the deal quickly. Let me know when you're interested in selling me a car."
Three emails like that and still 'have you received my quote? when can you come in so we can talk about your trade? OH MY MAUDE!!! WHAT TRADE. I DON"T HAVE A TRADE. LOL. Crazy.
I'd say it flat out.....give us a firm out the door quote accounting for *everything*. confirm that you have the vehicle in stock and we'll be there by close of business. if it's as promised in writing, we close the deal. if it's not, we walk. look forward to meeting you so soon.
k
i dont' like it. tell them politely:) it doesn't matter how it's broken down, or how it adds up, as long as it all adds up to 28 OTD.
that still adds up to more than that. if that other poster from chicago can get 28 otd so can you. let them know that the 28otd needs to include muds, mats and cargo liner (and wheel locks if you must press the point LOL)
have you sent out the email saying "if you can do the deal at 'x' OTD including muds, mats and cargo liner, I'll call you with a deposit and we'll be in on saturday' (or whatever day). Please respond with your very best offer and we will respond in kind by making a purchase.
even if they talk 'x' plus this plus that plus TTI, you can respond by saying, so just to be clear, you're saying that would be 'x' OTD? Please confirm your OTD price.
k
I am hoping will have all in writing from matching dealer tomorrow. Will let you know how that goes.
Yeah - when I say ready to purchase I didn't mean I had never seen one. And you're trying to contact me??? Hello, you can't contact me because I did not give you my number. My email will work fine - send over the numbers - oddly enough I can read!! That's how you contact me.
As for the Navi - my lovely new friend at Honda pointed out that Honda charges $2000 for it and you can get a touch screen Navi for $500 aftermarket...the backup cam - well, that's another story...but a friend of mine says that it can sometimes be misleading. She must have a trash can magnet on hers too.
But please don't let me dissuade you - I'd get one too if it was in the budget!! I love bells and whistles.
i know, right? LOL.
i have a great little garmin nav. love it. my dad bought it for me as a suprise when i was leaving michigan (visiting) to drive back home to atl a couple of mos ago. he loves his and felt i had to have one. so glad he had that feeling:D
i'm sure the backup cam can be misleading.....kind of like those side mirrors where 'objects are closer than they appear' hehe
k
I guess there is room there to do that at 25,500...it's just the market out here - most of my quotes are in the mid 26's. So i jumped on this. Might be a nice compromise with the dealer.
Carpet mats are included right? (Better check because I was told they were standard) What mats are you talking about?
EXACTLY
That and I suppose sometimes you may rely on just that and forget to actually turn around and look. Oops.
If I give up $2,000 cash incentive, the OTD price is going to be $30,000 with 4.9 APR. That's actually higher than the price my co-worker paid.
I just can't believe the price has not gone down since March of this year.
Any guidance out there on how to get $28K OTD with 3.9 or 4.9 APR?
Also, looking for EXL. The only dealers who seem to respond back to me are Bernardi, Commonwealth and Honda Cars of Boston
$30,188 price including dest.
$33,303 OTD
This is in the New Orleans metro area.
They gave me $500 more than I expected on the trade.
Thanks to all who lent there knowledge and experiences. This was by far the easiest buying experience ever.
Please let me know if everything goes well. Thanks
which is $29700++ otd at 3.9 apr. (iirc you guys are 8% sales tax?)
it's less what the 'price' is now compared to march and more
1)mfg incentives that dealers are passing on. currently 2k.
2)what others are willing to pay. you're probably working with someone who finds they don't need to do less than that to move the vehicle.
the best that we can do here in atl, which is a cheaper 'region' than chicago is probably 27,615 for an ex-l completely otd incl *everything* for a 7% tax county....that would be taking honda's standard financing or financing outside...we're using usaa at 5.something%
K
I also got a quote from another dealeer 1/2 hr away for 30,199 incl destination.
Not sure what to do next.
