Am wondering if you have a simialr problem to mine, which I posted previously, regarding headlight clarity and vision when using low beams. What model GC do you buy ? And what dealer are you using (if applicable) for service?
regarding your comments on your 04 GC. I also had very rough idle while stopped with transmission in drive, right from new. With the vehicle now at around 3800 miles, it has lessened somewhat- dealer had told me "there's nothing wrong", when I brought it back a few weeks after purchasing it. As far as whether an oil filter could cause any of the problems you list, I seriously doubt it ! Have worked for a major motor oil company for 15 years, and have not seen any problems when using aftermarket oil filters- remember, even the OEM filter is made for the OEM manufacturer by one of the 3-4 filter suppliers nationally !
Have you had any problems with your headlight visibility when using low beams (see my earlier posting); thanks!
Thanks,
Bob

If you have the 7/70 the converter should be covered but you will have a $100 deductible (standard on the 7/70 after the 3/36 runs out). Still cheap for the parts and labor.

Thanks again for the help.

Good luck,

Initially I thought it was fuel related because I noticed this after I filled the tank with 10% ethanol mix. After two tanks from my usual gas station and injector cleaner additive didn't help. I decided to do routine maintenance. Changed to Bosch 4203 plugs, new air filter. Start was even worse. MIL came on. OBD showed a cylinder 6 misfire. I took it in for service and had injectors purged. They told me to change the plugs back to original plugs since they have seen ~20 jeeps that have problems with the Bosch 4203 plugs. Did that, misfire disappeared, but I still have the hard start. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? I am within a month of warranty expiring so want this resolved before then. Will return for service soon but would like to have them check for specifics if anyone has had this problem. Thanks!
Thanks
1) First thing in the morning I open the driver-side door, and see a small puddle on the floor mats under the pedals. It rained the night before, so I assumed that's where the water was from. I checked on it a few times throughout the day (it had stopped raining), and there was no additional water puddle. So it seems to be external water-related.
I also notice the same thing jeepenvy describes in Message #402 (pasted below for reference). What could it be?
2) My check engine light went was on when I started the car to go home from work. Related to the leaks above? I don't know, but it worries me since I haven't had this car for that long! Since the SUV is used, I don't have the manuals--still waiting for them to be shipped from Tech Authority. I assume I should bring in the Jeep to a dealer right away?
Thank you for any advice.

#402 of 723 water leak by jeepenvy Oct 06, 2002 (4:51 pm)
I have a 2001 JGCL and I noticed a wet spot on the carpet by my hatch. After investigating, it looks like water is coming through the wiring harness and dripping through the "vent" along the head liner by the hatch. Has anyone else had problems similar to this?

I called the local Jeep dealership to make an appointment to have it checked. The service representative took my appointment request and after asking a few questions, suggested I ensure the gas cap was secure--I was to click the gas cap tightly so that it clicked at least three times. I drove around for a few minutes, pulled over, and started the engine again--this time the light was not on.
Apparently, when the gas cap is not tight enough and excess air gets mixed with the gas, that imbalance triggers the warning light. I don't pretend to know the why's and how's, but at least that's one less thing to worry about.
I want to be happy with this car but I wonder what the hell will happen next?
Thanks
I've seen the TSB on Jeep GC fuel pumps, and a few opinions on both sides of the fence. What I'd like to know and discuss is how many Grand Cherokee owners have had to replace their fuel pumps and was the tank lining looked at as a possible culprit?
For my money, anything that voids the warranty is a bad idea. You're covered for theft thru insurance. Probably depends on where you live, but IMHO there's a greater chance you'll have a non-warranty covered repair expense than it will get stolen. Besides it DOES have a system.
I was told that the calipers were the problem. They used different ones and 10K later all is still good (knock wood). What puzzles me is that you said the calipers were replaced. I'd start with asking what the replacements were.
Go with supporting info, but don't be too defensive. Remember you want them to do something for you. Also, sbcooke is right. If you search this board, I KNOW the TSB number and info is posted here.

I love it and have had no mechanical problems with it (knock on wood), however I am disappointed in the durability of the paint job. Three small spots on the hood and one on the roof have developed "spiderwebbing", small cracks, and flaking. Now I know bird drop acidity is hell on paint, but this jeep is less than 10 months old! Regardless, I've washed my jeep religiously (it being new and all) and would definitely have not left any bird crap baking on the hood. Thankfully, it hasn't spread.
One dealer has told me it wouldn't be covered under the 3/36K unless it was a factory defect. I would think that bad paint or bad application is a defect. Another told me it would be covered. Has anyone else had this problem? Especially owners who have the Midnight Blue Pearlcoat. Could this be the start of "Defective Chrylser Paint Jobs: The Sequel"?
I had a Warranty Gold warranty that is worth about $0.25 now. $1000+ in contract payments down the drain!
Any help/advice would be appreciated.
The last place I'll probably ever take my Jeep is to a dealer. The catch is trying to find a trustworthy, reasonably priced mechanic. If anyone knows of a good mechanic in the North Houston area, please post the contact info. here.
Front hub bearing replaced
front differential replaced
rear differential replaced twice
front passenger window mechanism replaced
door seals shrunk and leaking
hood strut broken
lug caps broken
leather seats show abnormal wear
friction noise on downshift at any speed
Loud whine at speeds of 45-60mph
vibration, rattle, noise perhaps from exhaust or steering.
Although I don't qualify for the Lemon Law, I do feel I have a case, this is why:
At the time of purchase the dealership had information about these problems that they did not share with me.
Based on past experience and reasonable expectation I had very good reason to believe the vehicle would meet certain minimum standards. The legal principal of implied warranty is founded on this theory.
Why don't I just trade it in and move on? Well, I tried that a couple of weeks ago and the dealer told me that (surprise!) my vehicle has very low value and I'd be taking a big hit. Now that made me think about finding some way to negotiate a more equitable deal, one where they assume their share of the loss. I want to here from others who have had the same problems. I know you're out there because your complaints are posted here and on the nhthsa site.
Come on 99 Jeep owners, Give me some feedback.
Found out from another discussion group that the lug nuts are tightened too much. Especially with air jacks. I hand tightened the lug nuts to 90 lbs. max. Did it one by one on all wheels. Just cost me the price of a $7.00 torque wrench at Pep Boys.
My 2 cents
1.0 hours, part $10.29. Total $164.39 covered under warranty. (17,603 miles). This cured the hard start problem. Now have over 60,000 miles.
Other repairs, brakes, 2 power window regulators/motors, ignition switch, water pump, etc. All covered under regular or extended warranty except brakes at 17,000. Would not own a DC product that is not under warranty. Just my opinion :-)
Perhaps this makes the situation worse, by I simply cannot believe that it is a CAUSE.
If you review my original post, I never said what the cause was. Just relayed what was mentioned in the post. No further responses on this topic from me. Try this procedure or not. Your choice.
I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee 3.1 TD bought from new. I don't think the diesel is available in the US but they're very popular in mainland Europe where diesel fuel is much cheaper than gasoline and are becoming much more popular in the UK despite the fuel price being comparable. My GC has an Italian VM 5-cylinder 3.1 litre engine although current GCs have the Mercedes 2.7 litre common rail engine.
The only problems I've had so far are a missing piece of trim on one of the roof rails and the aircon shearing off a pipe and leaving me very hot last summer (which was a record-breaker over here for temperatures). My local dealership is very helpful and have also replaced the brake discs under warranty. I think the reason these tend to warp more these days is that the brake pads don't contain asbestos any more, so any prolonged contact with the discs causes a build-up of heat in one spot and consequent distortion.
Coming to the end of the 3-year warranty, it's having a 36000 mile service next week. I'll also get them to look at the driver's door interior trim which isn't too well clipped to the rest of the door, the heated front seat which isn't very reliable and the power steering which tends to groan a lot on full left lock at low speed.
If anyone has any ideas about the steering noise I'd be happy to hear from them.
Overall, I'm very happy with the GC. I tow a 1500 Kg trailer caravan with it regularly throughout Europe and the UK and it deals with this very well apart from the gearshift getting a bit notchy sometimes (especially in hot weather). Fuel consumption is about 23 miles per US gallon solo and 16 towing at speeds up to 75 mph (legal in much of Europe).
The main issue I have is with the Goodyear tyres which give quite a hard ride on roads and don't give very good grip on fields and campsites. I'm seriously thinking of switching to Michelins all round when I have to (and when I've saved up enough cash!).
Certainly the only other SUV I'd consider switching to is a Toyota Land Cruiser but I don't think I'll ever be able to afford that now.
Okay, I think I've rambled on enough. Love this site and I'll be checking back with you guys regularly. Best wishes
