I am torn between a Honda Odyssey and a Toyota Sienna. I personally like Odyssey though. Primarily looking at 2009 / 2010 Odyssey EX or Sienna LE. Here are some prices found in central TX (all for 2010 Odyssey EX). Let me know if anyone got a better deal.
Price #1: Base price: $29,725.00 OTD: $31,827.28
Price #2: Base price: $29,615. OTD price including all taxes and fees: $31,704.
Price #3: Base Price: $29,849.00 + TT&L
Price #4: Through Costco member program Base price: 28,557.15 plus TT&L.
What do you guys think? Any better offers out there
Kinda hard to help with prices when you don't state the MSRP and sale price before TT&L. TT&L differs in each state and sometimes counties with all the fees that are tacked on.
I'm in the Western Pennsylvania area and the Dealership Family is Baierl Automotive. Honda, Acura, Toyota, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Subaru, and I don't know what else.
Is $500-$1,000 below invoice + TTL a solid deal? I wanted to get the $1,250 factory to dealer rebate but unsure if they'd go lower. I might be able to do better with another dealer in the $30K range and then factor in the rebate and a possible trade-in?
Still want to drive a Sienna and Sedona again. I like the looks of the Sienna better but the price and package of the Sedona is tough to pass up. $2,000 cash back makes it harder and I just heard from a local dealer they are selling at just above invoice.
So what do all you experts think? Honda is superior so pay more now to last longer (I take care of my cars and expect them to last; current car is 14 years old)? Save thousands and get the Kia now? Or even wait for hopefully better rebates from all manufacturers and try again during December when salesman are more desperate?
If you don't need to buy a vehicle now, you may find better deals in a month or two. Honda is just not giving much incentive at all now on their remaining 2009s. C4C depleted inventory so dealers asking more for existing vehicles.
We have personally decided to wait for the 2011 Sienna available first quarter 2010. New styling and 6 speed transmission.

I'd recommend scouring car forums for Sedona info before going that route. When I was van shopping some time ago, Kia problems and poor dealer response to them seemed to be a recurring theme. YMMV
As long as you are looking for minivans -- check out the vw routan. Incredible deals, 3 year service then service at chrysler after warranty. Well reviewed.
Thanks everyone for the info. With the relatively slim difference in price between an Odyssey EX-L and a Sedona EX with all the options, sounds like the Honda would be the better long term value, right?
Is it true that shopping at the end of the year (from mid-Dec. on) is better in terms of less customers and better ability to get price breaks from salesmen needing to hit end of month and end of year quotas?
And even though I'm dealing online with the dealers' internet staff, when I've gone into the dealers they still pass me to a salesman. So what's the point of doing all the advance legwork (other then they know that we know what's going on) if I'm still gonna get treated as if I walked in off the street?
If I want to do a trade-in there to save time, should I wait until a firm price has been set for the new car? What if they balk at that point? I can't sign something first if it says no trade-in and then do a trade in, but can't they change their mind on price after I mention a trade?
When do I mention the holdback (I don't want it but I want them to know that I'm aware of it) and the current $1,250 factory rebate?
Finally, what's the deal with the KBB numbers they pull up to justify their trade in rate? Is that what dealers are suggesting to pay and not what dealers are actually paying?

I just got home with my 2010 Slate Green EX-L w/ RES. Its our first van and we are super excited.
We negotiated the price to $32,783 plus tax, title and fees. Also ended up getting another $100 off for a minor scratch on the inside of the door. From what I understand invoice is approximately $32,500, so we were happy. We purchased in Alabama.
We had test driven several over the last 9 months and finally negotiated this deal over email once we were ready financially. Got a few quotes from dealers all around and had the closest dealer with the vehicle we wanted match the lowest. Worked for us.
I definately suggest looking over the vehicle with a fine tooth comb before purchasing. We found several black greese spots under the floor mats and a few other problems and had them clean it again. Much better the second time.
Thanks to all for sharing info. It definitely helps the price battle with the "mystery mgr behind the glass" who supposedly approves your offer. For that reason, I want to share my positive experience for those looking for a Honda in NC or surrounding area.
BURLINGTON HONDA is your answer. I haggled with my local dealer but when they continued to be nowhere near "my price", I called Burlington, told them I wanted an EX-LRES and my color choice, but simply asked for their best price. They didn't have what I wanted but checked their locator and called me back with a price that was only $100 more than what I had guessed to be fair. Considering he was retrieving it for me, I was ok with the extra $100.
$34,100 OTD ($35,715 + tag + tax + doc)
Highly recommend Burlington Honda in Burlington, NC. They take the agony out of an otherwise painful experience.
As a follow up to my initial post, the dealer is now asking if I would buy the car for $500 back of invoice? I am unfamiliar with this expression. Is it the same as $500 below invoice or is it something else like after taxes?
And can I still negotiate on the $1,250 factory to dealer incentive after we have agreed on a price or does the price we agree on include all rebates, incentives, etc.?
I liked some features of the Routan, but how can you say it is well reviewed when even here on Edmunds they advise against buying it as follow:
Chrysler's myriad quality issues with its newest minivans don't bode well for the Routan, and even putting these aside, this is not a segment-leading minivan to begin with. It's a competent people mover with a hint of Germanic flair, but rival models like the Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Entourage/Kia Sedona twins and Toyota Sienna will serve the typical minivan buyer better.
Some auto mags and other sites are positive about the routan some aren't. Some like it some don't. Chrysler has earned it's bad rap yet most mini-van owners I know are happy with their vehicle. One has 200k miles on his. The issue with the routan is that it is 6-10k less than the odyssey. It's comfortable has 4 wheels and will get you where you want to go. People are posting with great anxiety on saving a few hundred dollars on the odyssey. Is it superior to the routan. Sure. Is it 6-10k better than the routan? Depends on your perspective. My post was to offer a suggestion for those who are price shoppers. The routan is a real bargain for those who purchase long term.I really like the ody -- but if I was buying, would give the routan a serious look.Might still buy the ody -- who knows. Eventually all minivans depreciate to 1-2k transportation and then to junk. Saving 6-8-10k on the vw is worth considering.
When do the 2010 Odysseys come out? When is the best time to buy an Odyssey (it could be a 2009 model)? I can wait a few months if it will get me a better price. Are there any reasons to buy a 2010 model over a 2009?
From what has been posted there a few differences between 09-10. Major makeover next year or two. Your negotiating skills and credit rating will determine your total deal. There may be selection issues with the 09. No big rebates like earlier.
Where do you get Routan is 6-10k less than Odyssey? EX-L MSRP $33,405 have leather seat, Routan SEL with leather seat MSRP is $33,600. Are you still looking at the number people get for cash-4-clunker?
What I heard about C4C is dealership is asking several hundred $ above MSRP. It is terrible
$7500 off msrp in st. louis or 3k off and zero financing for 72 months. And that's just the start of the deal. Some dealers are loaded with inventory. 9-10k off would be my starting point but like I said--I'm not in the market now.I woul feel confident of getting an 09 routan sel with moonroof for 25-26k. Honda exl's are going for about 31k -- may be a bit off on the 6k difference. Sorry. added the sunroof package which raises the msrp around 2k for the routan. If you want a base s model -, those are advertised for $18700. May be a regional thing.
I was in the market for a 2009 Ody until CFC really messed things up. I'm shying away on the 2010 of either model as I've started Googling for spy shots of the new 2011 Ody and Sienna.
It looks like Toyota is out for revenge in the minivan space - personally, I am a 100% Honda guy but from the spy shots I see so far, I have a hunch the 2011 Sienna is going to be a better van than the 2011 Ody. I am seeing reports of a 6-speed transmission and the spy shots are of a much more agressive looking minivan than the spy shots I've seen of the Ody. Either way, even if the Ody comes out of top, it will be nice to see Toyota as a serious contender again vs. Honda. Hopefully that will help prices and remove some of the price premium Honda gets.
Either way, I think we're going to wait this one out to see the new models. I have a hunch that if I buy now, I'm gonna regret it when the new models hit the showroom.
Jay, are you a VW salesman? I sse you post the same message for routan once in every 15 days.
I personally test drive this vehicle, SEL w/ fully loaded packages. Drive smooth, spacious, looks good. Some features I liked a lot which I do not see in Odyssey Touring or Sienna XLE LTD - like stadium seating option. 60GB HDD for DVD system, you can also watch 2 different movies/play games in 2 LCD displays. Overall looks impressive as a new vehicle.
What makes me worried is reliability. Chrysler engine is # 1. Also I read many complaints on door not locking properly. Unavalability of parts is another issue. I also see many positive reviews in MSN, yahoo and Edmunds, but 90+% of those reviewers posted their reviews just after purchasing the vehicle.
It may turned out that your vehicle stays in great condition for long period, but it seems to me higher risk than buying Odyssey or Sienna. If you want to adventure, you may get their top model for $10K off MSRP.
You are right to suspect my profession, I have been touting the routan. Not in sales and don't own any vw stock. The reason I've been suggesting folks check out the routan is that the deals are so outrageous. I have seen offerings of 9k off msrp online. You checked it out and decided it's not worth it. I might feel the same way. But if all you want is a nice ride and a great deal nothing comes close. The concerns you raise are valid. Whatever -- promise not to mention the routan -- no one seems interested anyway. Congrats on at least checking it out. Good luck.
Edmunds review has been pretty bad for the Routan, and it probably comes down to it is a DEAL from Chrysler, may not be a vehicle you WANT. After driving last generation of Chrysler Town and Country, and current Dodge Journey (a rental car, interior panels, headrest, mirror starts to fall off after 30k miles, feel like a amusement ride up and down when driving on highway), my opinion is Chrysler engineering and quality is at the bottom in all car manufacturers. If you are a car guy, you should have heard stories about Chrysler internal people complaining about the cheap parts they use, causing problem that should not have happened and things break down very soon.
When purchasing a minivan, you should expect kids beat up the interior of the van. Chrysler quality will guarantee things will fall off.
When we started looking at new cars --we test drove the Routan ~it was a nice vehicle - easy to think about purchasing ~~we have been Honda owners for at least 15 years. We wanted to do a comparison. The VW dealer kept asking us --what price would you offer to take this vehicle home today ~~after about an hour ---we said "$20,000"... it was frustration overload. We never heard an OTD price from them ~! So~~what lost the vehicle in our listing ?? The spare tire is under the car --under the second row of seats ....and our luck says "a flat is most likely to happen on the way to a wedding / or in the middle of a snow storm --neither time is prime for crawling under the car ~! " Honda irritated us ---by pulling our price offer in July...the huge discount was gone ---because our salesman was certain that all would be fine-the next day. It wasn't. Check out the Subaru line ~~is our suggestion ~! We bought the Tribeca --5 seat style--. The 2010's are coming out as 7 passenger seats ~~check 'em out ~!Should be hitting the dealerships in the next month or so. Where should car shoppers be more aware ?? The finance office --learn about ALL the options before you walk in that door ! We wish we had been. It will be our first stop on the next car purchase ~!! Best of Luck ~~!! :shades:
My wife and I just became the parents of a proud baby 2009 Touring (no PAX) for $30K+TTL+Tax. Immaculate, Honda certified, one previous owner and only 12K miles. Purchased in Central Florida.
Was immediate love and no looking back! We're ecstatic over our purchase. First Honda for the both of us. Previous: 67 Olds Delmont 88, 72 Merc Capri, 80 Plym Horizon TC3, 90 Ford Taurus, 90 Dodge Spirit, and 00 Merc Sable.
Wife is Queen of the Highways! Wife happy... I'm happy. Everybody wins.
It is a great deal after C4C messed things up. You could get less than $29000+TTL+TAX by the end of June this year. Can you share which dealer you dealt with? Thanks.
thats a great price. I have been looking for a similiar deal here in Raleigh, NC and have been unable to get them below $35,000. I think I will give them an email.
Hello again and thanks to everyone for all of your sound advice. I am still negotiating with dealers on the purchase of a 2009 Odyssey EX-L and am at about $29K + TTL. Some have run out but others have them and I figure with the 2010s arriving now is a decent time to buy. Was worried since the rebates ended yesterday but it looks like Honda continued the $1,250 incentive and also added a 2.9% finance option. I thought about getting the EX-L with the DVD but the price is a lot higher and from what I see in stores an aftermarket system can be bought for much less. My concern is the warranty would be less, the chance they might mess up the electronics with the wiring and that it would not look as good. But there are more options that way rather than the 1 DVD fits all factory choice. Any opinions?
I am trading in my 1995 Ford Explorer XLT. It has 150,000 miles and in good condition. The last dealer ran the numbers on KBB and said they could offer $2,000 or so which is better than I thought. The other sites appraised it at $800. I know I'd get less at a dealer but that may be my only option. Any idea why the dealer would access KBB to give me a quote if KBB is not what dealers rely upon?
Hi all thanks for all the great info posted on this thread. It has been extremely helpful. I am trying to neg a deal and all the local dealers charge apx $400 for a document fee in addition to tax, tag and registration. Is this a universal charge? and if so, anyone sucessful in lowering the amount or eliminating it all together? My goal price for the car is $34,000 and I am getting them close to it.
Your right, it is very high compared to the prices that were offerred in Late June and early July. But there are no incentives on 2010 Ody now and i didnt need a car at that time. In the local and state wide market, there are no 2009 models left.
Looking at the website truecar.com, $34,000 seemed like a good price, especially for the region i live in. Now, i don't know who operates that website, it may be paid for by Honda Corp...I dont know.
Forgot to add that I tried to get in on Cash for Clunkers for the $4,500 but the dealer wouldn't budge off MSRP for the Odyssey so I passed. I tried explaining the C4C promo was a federal rebate and they were getting more than they should but they wouldn't listen so I walked. I figured I could get more now with the discount off MSRP plus the incentive plus the trade-in.
Is $29K (plus dest., taxes, DMV, etc.) for a 2009 Odyssey EX-L decent? Or is $30K for the 2009 Odyssey EX-L with DVD better? Sounds as if I should bypass the DVD model and do it on my own but it might be easier to get the DVD model at $30K than the non-DVD model at $29K.
The doc fee is just an extra cost (read mostly profit) for the dealer. It's for someone typing the deal up and etc. Should be negotiable, but some dealers won't budge.
Well I think I am going to pull the trigger soon. We had our 3rd baby just about 2 weeks ago. We've been making do with 1 car taking turns on scheduled shifts running the older kids to two different schools, husband to and fron work, grocery and other errands. I don't know how much longer we can continue to share one car.
I'm weighing the two quotes I have for a 2009 vs a 2010 EX-L.
I found a 2009 EX-L about 80 miles away and got quoted $29,500 (incl. dest) but didn't get a reply yet on the extra fees, etc or color. Tax would be aprox $1625 and tags/title should be $168. We would probably qualify for the 2.9% Honda financing for 5 yrs.
The 2010 EX-L quote is for a color that we like at a dealer in our immediate area. We have a blank check from Capital One at 5.2% over 6 years.
$31,288 - base + dest fee $95 - service fee $1726 tax $168 - tags/title ============ $33,277 - Total OTD
I'm leaning more towards the 2010. What do you think?

Our 2004 Sienna was spending too much time in the shop after almost 80,000 miles of service.
Hope this helps.
This price includes the 710 destination charge.
Good luck!
The NAV was important - rear camera given all the children playing around.
Good luck!
Anyone know dealer cost 7yr and 8yr -100,000 mi warranties? I was told $1015 but I remember reading $830 on old post. Haven't shopped this around yet.
Also, anyone know of any banks offering good finance rates?

'10 EX-L (RES/NAV): $33,000 (includes destination fee)
where are you located. $37,700 & 33,000 seem like very strong offers.
