Thanks for those numbers. I didn't know them the last time I bought a Honda and ended up paying $700 over invoice. Am in no rush to buy and will look for the one off deal.
Oh, OK, maybe that's what HONDA makes on every one they sell. The dealers make far less of a percentage than that!
Hard to say what is "fair" but I would think on a 35,000 sale a dealer ought to be able to gross a couple of grand. I know I wouldn't invest 30,000 plus grand into an item unless I expected a decent return on my money.
Of course, some people think car dealers should make nothing.
It has to be remembered that it's always the MARKET that determines what things sell for. If the new Odyssey is as hot as I think it's going to be, I wouldn't expect any deep discounts. No reason to do this.
Looking for a 2011 Odyssey Touring in the Midwest and the prices drop EACH DAY. Talke with 5 dealers, visted 1 and they are trying to convince me that there are pre-orders and people who need it ASAP are forced to buy at, or slightly above ($100) MSRP.
Michigan prices for '11 Ody Touring (includes destination):
Oct 3: $43,756 Oct 5: $42,937 Oct 6: $40,500 Oct 7: $39,855 Oct 7 (night) on Zag.com: $38,090 (invoice price)
By the end of the month should be well under invoice...
Called an Internet dealer and he was so mad about the price drop-- what an actor.
Willing to "talk" about such an offer and actually accepting it are two different things. Some stores will tell you anything just to get you in.
LX's aren't very good sellers compared to the others so if a "deal" can be made, you're probably on the right model. Stll, I doubt if a store will be willing to lose money on a car that is brand new on the market.
I requested a quote for Touring Elite through ZAG-Amex and the quoted price was $40870. Amex states that $500 plus invoice price but it does not seem to be right. The Invoice price is $39937 and it should come up to $40437.
I guess there may be some add ons. Anyone got similar quote?
No propaganda. Just 14 years of experience selling Hondas including a LOT of Odysseys. Retired in May so no dog in the race.
This forum is also for people who are shopping and have not yet bought.
A lot of stores will say anything to get a customer to come in. This is how they are trained. They are trained to say..." Hey, that sounds good to me! Come on in and let's try to make that number work"
I dealt with stores that lowballed customers every day.
From the buyer's side, my local Honda dealer tells me that every time I give them a chance to match an offer. They say the offer I got is not real, the price will be different when I go to buy at the other dealer. It NEVER happened to me.
So buyer be cautious, but in my experience I've had 100% success with the high volume low price dealers (5 new Hondas since 2004).
2011 Toyota Camry, 2014 Jeep Wrangler, 2017 Honda Civic Coupe, 2019 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid XSE, 2021 Toyota Tundra, 2022 Toyota 4Runner, 2022 Tesla Model 3
Would you guys say destination charges are set in stone? So when some of you are saying $500 above invoice would that include the destination charge or not?
Well you're dealing with a straight shooter and that is a good thing.
I did have to deal with prices that weren't real. Sometimes the customers were lying and other times, I just knew "something" had to change when the customer arrived or that maybe an honest mistake had been made. It happens.
I could always tell when they were lying and it was pretty funny. They would tell me that ABC Honda would sell a particular car for a certain price. I price that I knew was impossible. I would tell the customer..." Wow...that's a great deal! I can't do that and you should probably buy it there!"
" Well, what is YOUR price?"
" It doesn't matter. I can't lose that much money...that is where you should buy it"
" But...what is YOUR price"?
etc...
It's also possible that that other store just doesn't want to sell a car that cheap.
It is nice you give your local dealer a chance at your business!
That's true. Dealers have no control over destination charges. They have to pay them and the simply pass them along.
Cars are the only thing I know of that seperates destination charges. If we buy a new refrigerator, we pay destination charges. They are just buried in the price.
Just picked up a 2011 EX-L for $33,000 including destination. I also had them add on Fog lights, roof rails, cross rails, pin stripes and splash guards for another $800.
No, the $1,500 premium for a NAV system is ridiculous IMHO. I can buy a $150 garmin and a $150 Ipod and connect it to the USB port and pocket the rest of the cash.
Same goes for the RES. I can buy a nicer system for $600 installed.
YEAH....those car salemen are up to their SLEAZY TRICKS AGAIN.
BS- These cars are "HOT", in fact the ones sitting on our lots with the dust on them and their interiors no longer smell like new car...are ALL SOLD..!!
BS- The undercoating protectant $400, is actually our $7.00/hr employee spraying Armor All with a spray bottle under the vehicle.
BS- You have to have the scotch guard protectant for $400, when it actually costs us $3.00 from Wal-Mart. We picked up a can when we left the Lucky-7 GoGo on our lunch break back to the dealer.
BS- We are charging you doc fees of $700. The papers they are written on were imported from a Gold Tomb.
BS- The owner of the dealer is an alcoholic, so we have to charge you a $699 dealer prep fee because the owner Puked all over the cars on the lot when he got back from the Lucky-7 GoGo and found out his wallet was stolen by the dancer named "Bubbles"
What a Joke, their lame 1970's used car salesmen liners.
Well I decided to give Zag a try to see what kind of quotes came back. I requested via Overstock since I am not a USAA member and dont have an Amex card. I will be curious to see what pricing comes back on the 2011 EX. Only Amex Zag site showed a price at first and it was invoice. Overstock didnt have an actual figure Iand said something along the lines of discounted price not offered but had a goal price and it was like 500 over invoice, which is about 700 better then I got on my own so far. I did notice on the Amex site it said the closest dealer was over 150 miles away from me, wow! I hope the overstock request will come in with a much closer dealer but not sure since I have never used the Zag service before? I really dont see the wife traveling that far for a leased vehicle.
If the price is too high, they don't sell. If the price is right they sell. It is all about value. Some see it, some don't. You can buy a Chrysler/Dodge/VW or Sienna for the same price. Who is throwing money/extras/etc. at it to help it sell? Anyone for a Nissan Quest or KIA Sedona/Hyundai Entourage?
Please speak up now! Trade and resale value down the road favor the Odyssey!
Do you have a leased Odyssey? 07 or 08. Check the trade value versus the buyout. EQUITY, if you have not trashed it or wrecked it. Same with Pilots or CRV's in most markets.
Unfo'rtunately, some dealers still will send out lowball prices. They do not include destination and handling or options. Leaving out D&H can be explained away, but it is not honest. You can do the research and if numbers are lower, that dealer expects you to come back and say OK.
It is the same as the dealer saying that they will match or beat any deal you get. OK. Why won't you give me that deal now? They expect you to do the legwork and get beat up over trying to achieve that "Magic Number". After you stagger back into their dealership, they will let you know- "This is the Best we can do". Why don't you just buy it here?
And- Enough of the comparison shopping where you do not want to reveal the name of the supposed best deal. Give some proof. You have already flushed your honor/integrity down the toilet by shopping the numbers. Just do it! And be done with it.
Then just buy the EXL. Accessories installed in the vehicles have to meet tougher NVH and reliability standards than the item you can get at BestBuy, etc.. They are designed to last for many years. I have bought my wife two portable DVD players from different manufacturers and neither of them have lasted more than a year. Imagine putting one on the back of a headrest in a vehicle and subjecting it to three years of everyday use. Not to mention user abuse.
You are right. Pocket the cash and buy your own system. Make sure you check out their warranty.
Give me a break. Some small dealers may get away with this type of behaviour, but larger/volume dealers(you will not see it- If you do, go talk to the GM). You will find many honorable salespeople out there today. IF you find one who is not. Tell his Boss or find another dealer.
What dealer would not jump at the chance to sell a new, in demand vehicle for such a cheap price and then have to pay ZAG/AMEX/USAA/Overstock a $400 fee?
And you wonder why the nearest dealer doing this is 150 miles away???? REALLY???
2013 Odyssey will come with robotic driver assist. You won't even have to think about driving it. Also the optional JATO rocket assist will be standard on the Touring Elite Premium Ultimate!
Exactly! Many sales trainers out there just teaching salespeople how to get you in the door. You don't have to buy this today do you? What are you currently driving? Are you planning to trade? We give people lot's of money for their trades! We call that a transition vehicle and we can't get enough of them.
Do you know where we are located?
If you want to play it simple you can. If you want to make it a game- you will find plenty of salespeople who will take you for a ride.
A reputable dealer will show you exactly how they value your trade. KBB. Blackbood, NADA and auction results. As well as the appraisers personal knowledge of what vehicles are doing at the wholesale level.
Not happy with your trade value? Talk to the appraiser. Do you have maintenance records(this helps the dealer sell high mileage vehicles)? What about the Accident reports?
You can help your trade value or hurt it. The cleaner the vehicle is, the better the call.
Sometimes KBB is off. You can call them and bring it to their attention.
I had not heard of ZAG.com until reading about it here - so I took a look. Through the DriveYourDream link I got a quote of $40,420 for touring elite (50 over inv). The dealer called me within 3 mins of my hitting the submit button on the form. If they weren't 130 mi away from my house I would be seriously interested.
I am interpreting the quote as NOT including destination - is that how everyone else is reading it?
If you buy something after market do make sure you are buying it from a local company that if you have issues, you can talk to them face to face. There are a lot of local companies that install great products. However, most warranty is for 12 months from store. 2 years from factory. So after the 12 months you will have to actually take the system out yourself and ship it to the factory. Then install it again once it comes back.
At least with the factory one it is cover up to 3 years / 36,000 miles. Or you can buy a extended warranty that covers your electronics as well throug the dealership you purchase your vehicle from.
I have been reading a lot of posts on here about the bait & switch of buying a new 2011 Odyssey and other vehicles. This is a great read that I found online. Thought I would share it.
After months of research you have narrowed your purchase down to that one vehicle. Now the next step you take is to submit for a price quote online through one of hundreds of websites out on the internet. Here are a few suggestions you should consider before and after.
1. Make sure you submit your information through a credited website such as KBB.COM, AutoTrader.com, Cars.com, Edmunds.com or the Factory Website of the brand you are looking to purchase like Honda.com. Try avoiding any other website out there as many of them are what you call 3rd party leads
Didn't want to post the whole thing up here. It's a long one. But a good read.

The real question is 'What is fair profit for a dealer selling an Odyssey?'.
I may pay up to $1K over invoice if they throw in roof rails, a tow hitch, fog lights, and mats.
Going out hunting now, wish me luck!

A dealership that is willing to talk is better than another that bad mouths others without making any concession.
Thanks.
So Invoice plus $400 ZAG fee and $500.
Does this sound good?

It is what the manufacturer pays to have the vehicle shipped to a dealer.
Be very leery of any post that doesn't disclose ALL relevant information.
Am in New Jersey.
Best so far I have been quoted is 33,300 plus 780 destination plus 249 doc fees for 2011 EX-L with Nav (Invoice 33012).
Is that a good deal ?

LOVE IT!!!! Sound deal for now. . . of course it will go lower at end of year. . . and then we'll question waiting for 2012. Repeat.
I needed it now . . . and am so happy. Already had someone admiring the new Ody.
