Actually, it's not nasty at all - it just reminds folks of the rules posted at the top of this discussion. Check them out.

It has to do with our very strong position on not allowing solicitation. Not all messages are what they say they are and it's just something we've had to do.

I'm glad you are happy with your new Accord.

The dealer invoice, however is almost 900.00 more than the 25,159 than you stated.

"the dealer let slip what their actual cost was "

That line says it all. They let it 'slip' on purpose.

Last week, (11-10-03), I bought a 2001 Accord EX V6 with leather upholstery for $15,500.00. After paying taxes ($1,790), transfer title fee, ($15), smog ($70) and insurance ($630/year), my total cost is $18,005. I think it is a good deal.

I bought the car from a private party who drove the car sparingly. It had only 18,800 miles on it. The original factory warranty expired on Sept. 18, 2003, so I am planning to buy an extended warranty. I plan to buy the warranty from an independent company instead of from the dealer. Can anyone suggest a reputable aftermarket warranty company who sells warranties at a reasonable price? I want to buy the longest coverage available.

    Thanks,

I didnt check the used car values, but that sounds like a great deal assuming the car is in excellent condition and hasn't been in any accidents. Congratulations.
The real reason I'm responding is to suggest you at least consider the Honda Care warranty as it still may be possible for you to be eligible for a factory plan. I'm about to pick up at 2004 EX V6 on Wednesday and just negotiated an extended warranty today about 35-40% below my dealer's original price by just shopping around a bit and bringing the lowest legitimate offer to the dealer where I'm buying the car -- they met the price.
It still may not be the cheapest around, but you never have to worry about the plan going bankrupt (like Warranty Gold did, I think), and the Honda dealer (assuming that's where you will have the car serviced) will be able to access the information easily. At my dealer, it also means free loaner cars for repairs (other than oil changes).
Hope this helps a bit, and best of luck in your decision.

Picked up my car yesterday. Paid 21100 for the car ( Accord EX auto 4D with SCA. ) Fell into a tipical sales trick and could not get another 100 off.
When I was picking up my car, I saw a document says the price dealer paid to the bank is 20475. I guess the dealer take 600 more from my deal.

    Hi
I live in Orange county, california. I got this price quote from a dealer, want to get your opinion , if its a good deal.

     2004 - Accord EX - 4 Cyl - Auto - Black color - Cloth trim
with SRS curtain airbag - $20,743 + taxes . This price includes the destination charge. Is this a good price or should I haggle around more??
  • z71billz71bill Member Posts: 1,986
    I don't understand your post.

The dealer paid the bank 20475? Why would the dealer pay the bank?

If you have it backwards - bank paid dealer 20475 and you owe the bank 21100 -then I am still mixed up. Then you paid 21100 for the car - but the dealer only gets 20475 -

I know many dealers sell a car and also handle the loan paper work. Lets say they sell a car for $20,000 financed at 10% for 60 months -the payment is $425 a month. Lets assume the bank will accept a rate of 8% (BTW the buyer does not know this, they think the rate is 10%) Since the payment is still $425 a month for 60 months the loan balance (amount paid to dealer) is $20,960. Dealer just added $960 to their bottom line - by selling a higher than market loan.
  • richards38richards38 Member Posts: 606
The invoice on that car is $21,009 including transportation. So $20,743 is $266 UNDER invoice which seems very good unless you must pay an additional amount for added on, dealer accessory junk or the dealer has arranged high-cost financing on which the dealer gets a kickback from the lender. What's the FULL story on your deal?..........Richard

My wife and I bought an '03 that the dealer was looking to clear out, paid $22850 plus TTL. Not the best deal, but I'm happy with it. No Navi, but it does have leather and all the other goodies that the EX has. So far, so good and we are happy. Any comments? What have people been paying or what is the going rate recently for 03 EX's with the V6? TIA

That's a good price! We had a chance to buy an 03 for a similar price, but didn't and here's why.

The 04 seems to have more of the "bugs" worked out. The 04 cost about 1200 more, but it's worth about 1200 more in resale. It's really a wash because my insurance is a bit higher, but that's the only negative I could find. Anyway, the 03 had been sitting there for a while and had a few miles on it. The 04 was still sitting on the truck.

04 EX V6 Leather = 24,144 + TTL, No fees or add ons.

It was the last shipment of 2003's that the dealer got. I'm hoping that some "fixes" were put into it. Nice job on your 2004. Now if I can just get my wife out of it long enough to enjoy it. :)

Tell me about it. The wife loves it. She should, it's hers but I drive it when I'm home. It's like an unspoken rule. I haven't had any of the problems noted in this forum. I just installed some mud guards last weekend. Looks a bit better. We bought a silver one. How about you?
  • porknbeansporknbeans Member Posts: 465
Ours is "Eternal Blue Pearl".....it's blue (I sometimes wonder about the people that come up with the names for colors). With a gray interior. My wife has never seen or used bun warmers on a car, but I imagine once the weather finally turns cold around here it will become one of her favorite features. I'm sure being in Florida this will become one of those buttons that rarely gets used. Probably a stupid question, but do most people tint their windows down there? We haven't had a sunroof on a car in 10 years and I'm looking forward to having that. I've got a company truck, so I like you only get to drive the new Accord on the weekend or in the evening when I "forgot to get something from the store". What kind of engineering do you do? You can contact me via email if this is boring anybody else.

I sat down with hardin Honda a few months ago when I was in serious car-buying mode (at least until I found out about the Mazda3), and got quoted the equivalent of $22K out the door. So your price is right in line with the pricing I was getting.

that's a great price. would you mind telling us what state, city, and/or dealer you bought the car from?

    Guys,

I'm a graduating college student and looking to buy my first car here in about a week. (the coupe). The dealership is offering me 22,500 on the 03 EXV6 and about 22,200 on the 04 EX with leather. Usually I would just go with the V6, however, didnt know whether I should get the first model year or not. Do you think this is a good deal for the V6?? THanks for the help

Can someone please explain to me the process for using carsdirect.com to buy a car. It seems like all their prices are $450 over invoice, which seems fair. Why bother spending lots of time and effort to haggle with dealers if you can get a good price on-line? Also, are there any fees for using carsdirect or any fees in general that they don't list which would change the estimated payment they give? If anybody has any experience buying a car this way your input is greatly appreciated.

Below are two lowest priced options I uncovered for my 2000 Odyssey, purchasing warranty in March of 2003 in the 36th month of the manufacturer's warranty. I have a name and email for the folks at Moss Honda where I purchased. With all the electrical options on the Odyssey, I felt it was a good investment, plus covers everything bumper-to-bumper. The information is below:

Union Park Honda - Wilmington, DE

    7 year /75,000 miles = $735+$60 (additional because after time of purchase) = $795
    7 year /100,000 miles = $960+$60 (additional because after time of purchase) = $1,020

    Moss Honda in Lafayette, La
    7 year /75,000 miles = $680+$60 (additional because after time of purchase) = $740
    7 year /100,000 miles = $900+$60 (additional because after time of purchase) = $960

    6 year /75,000 miles = $635+$60 (additional because after time of purchase) = $695
    6 year /100,000 miles = $770+$60 (additional because after time of purchase) = $830

Don't know where you are located geographically, but I do know that if you interested.. I visited a local dealer here in Columbus, Ohio today and re-test drove a Honda Accord EX V-6 Navi coupe.

It appears that the dealership have two left over 2003's fully loaded with the Navi system. One is Red and the other is White. I drove the white one this afternoon and was very impressed. The red one was STILL covered in plastic.. top to bottom!

From the salesman, I am under the impression that they are willing to do "whatever it takes" to move the left over 2003's. If these two vehicle's interest you and you're willing to travel to pick up your first new car, then I would simply e-mail the dealership and tell them what you are willing to pay for the vehicle.... Looks as if you could possibly shoot for $500 - $1000 under dealer invoice? If either of these are your color choices, within your price range and you live within reasonable distance, I would definitely entertain the idea of making them a "quick" offer to see if they will accept it.

If interested, let me know and I can give you the name of the dealership here in town.

    Good Luck!

Don't haggle, just tell them what you are going to pay and drive to a dealer that will take it. You can do this on their website in about 5 minutes. Just about any dealer will gladly match the carsdirect price. I would shoot about $500 lower and pay what most people on this board have been paying.

But what do you think is the better buy?

    The 03 EXV6 coupe for 22,500
    or
THe 04 EX w/ leather coupe for 22,300
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,419
The '03 V6... The cost of leather in the 4-cyl EX won't come back to you at trade-in time, negating the resale advantage of the '04 over the '03... And, you get to drive the V6 the whole time. And I like the 4-cyl... so, thats sort of unbiased on my part.

I'm more experienced looking at the sedans, but to do the math precisely I think you need to specifcy whether you are talking auto. vs. manual transmissions and then run some numbers using the values on Edmunds. The idea would be to see which is offering you the largest potential monetary discount compared to the actual value of the car. Presumably you would start with a lower number on the 03 because you are buying a year old car, so to speak.

Some non-monetary factors which could infludence which is the better buy -- A manual could be particularly fun with the four cylinder engine. Also, I think all leather equipped EXs come with XM Radio (you might be able to add a Honda-branded, non-integrated XM unit to a 03 accord for about $700). Another factor is that the cost of operation of the 4-cylinder should be marginally less in terms of gas mileage and other maintenance costs, including insurance rates.

If I was just geting out of college, I think an Accord Coupe with, for instance a manual transmission, 4-cylinder, and XM radio would be kinda a dream come true.

I just got a 04 EX v-6 sedan with NAV, but my first Accord (1994) was a 4-cuylinder with a manual transmission.

    Hope this helps a little.

I have an offer from the dealer on a white 2004 Accord Coupe EX w/leather, 4 cyl, auto for $24,425. This includes mud flaps, stripes, sunroof visor and spoiler. I live in Georgia and I am not sure if this is a good price or not. I checked online and it looks as though the average selling price is around $21,000. Can anyone give me some advice???? Much appreciated!
  • kendridkendrid Member Posts: 97
What does window tinting usually run for the back three windows? If it is professionaly done are there any issues with bubbling/scratching?
  • richards38richards38 Member Posts: 606
IMO you can do better--a fair price is $200 to $400 over invoice (invoice prices are shown on Edmunds).

Some people have purchased '04 Accords at or even under invoice and they did especially well, but it depends on the demand for cars in your area and how eager the dealer is to make a sale.

I personally think that mud flaps, stripes, sunroof visors, and spoilers overload a beautiful car with ugly, useless and costly junk that is pure price packing and make a nice, clean Honda look like a "pimp car" (sorry if that's too rude, but it's true in my eyes).

Find a car without all that trash hung on it and see if you can get it for $250 over invoice--I'll bet you can if you try........Richard

We sell a lot of cars through them. You do a transaction with them by phone and email and then you are sent to the likes of me to sign all the contracts and purchase the vehicle.

And yes our dealership will match any posted price on carsdirect.com In some cases we can do better.

how can you call Mud Guards pimp gear.

    I think they are necessary.
  • kf3kf3 Member Posts: 1
This model is loaded with standard features including satellite XM radio and all airbags.

After reviewing here and Honda-accessories.com, requested 6 e-mail quotes from local dealers. Received 4 reasonable replies. None would budge or discuss invoice at $21,867 + $490 destination. However, my added dealer accessories were quoted from $1,300 to $1,670 for the group. I negotiated down to $1,175 for: fog lights, rear wing spoiler, splash guards, gold emblems, pin stripes and dealer processing fee.

    Thus: $21,867 + $490 + $1,175.
The sales taxes, license, registration are separate.

Thanks to all for prior input to this site.

Just signed the papers for an 04 EX V6 4dr for dealer invoice. Added splash guards, locking lug nuts, and trunk tray for $232, HondaCare 7yr/100k miles ($0 deductible) for $1250, 36 month 1.9% financing.

Any thoughts on how I did? HondaCare seems a bit high based on what I can gather on dealer cost from the internet, but I'm not sure how accurate these sources are.
  • rbrrbr Member Posts: 113
Assuming dealer invoice is what's listed on Edmunds, sounds like you did very well on the price of the car. I just got an 04 EX V6 w/Nav for about $500 over invoice, but I only paid $945 for a 7yr/100K Honda Care Warranty. I also took the 1.9% financing for 36 months.

Accessory prices dont seem that bad and they are functional items.

Sounds like net, net, you did a couple hundred better than me, but the NAV equipped cars are tougher to come by. Congrats -- you really get a lot of car for the money.
  • briguy5254briguy5254 Member Posts: 7
Seems like we both got good deals on a great car. Yes, by invoice I mean what's listed on Edmunds (which, BTW, agreed with the salesman's figure exactly-kudos Edmunds!). I may try to get a better price on the HondaCare, but as it is I guess I'm pretty satisfied with my deal. Thanks again for the feedback and best of luck with your new car.
  • rbrrbr Member Posts: 113
IF you haven't closed on the warranty yet, the way I got a better rate on the Honda Care warranty was to shop the price a bit on the internet and then bring that price back to my purchasing dealer. Did the same thing on the purchase price of the car using the "request for quote" feature on the Honda website. At least one dealer, Curry Honda, offers pricing on line. Good luck as well.

We used to call those big, reflector-laden flaps added behind the rear wheels of old Fords, Chevys, etc. "Tennessee-go-fasters"--I lived in Cleveland, Ohio at the time, so you can guess what was meant by that.

OK, the little rubber mud guards I've seen stuck on new Accords don't look THAT silly but be aware that dirt and salt (again, my Cleveland days showing here) can find their way between the mud guards and the fenders and actually CAUSE rust or blemishes on the fenders.

If you MUST install those things, consider coating the fender under the guard with grease or some protection so that they won't do
damage because once those mud guards have been on the car for a few months, you might not be able to remove them without leaving permanent marks on the paint......Richard
  • iexplore2000iexplore2000 Member Posts: 237
Yes.. Actually, that's where I visited.. They have a very laid back approach and basically let the cars sell themselves. They seem to have a unique niche in terms of providing a complementary 100K powertrain warranty free of charge. However, their "perk" does not interest me in that respect because the warranty is ONLY valid if you have all of the scheduled maintenance done through them directly. IMOP, the Honda's powertrain should surpass past the 100K mark even if someone didn't follow the maintenance schedule to the tee. Therefore, I don't get too excited over the idea that they will "extend your warranty for free."

    Thanks!

IMO, the only accessory that is truly a must on this car are the wheel locks (for EX versions.) You can get them on handaaccessories.com for $25. Probably takes 2 minutes to install. I would not get them at the dealer if they are charging more than $40 for them.
  • richards38richards38 Member Posts: 606
The dealer from whom I bought my EX-L 4 cyl. sedan traded cars with another dealer who had already put wheel locks on the car with an add-on price sticker charging $125 for them! Nobody bothered to remove them so they were included at no charge, so I was lucky.

There's a "key" that matches the weird pattern on the "locked" nuts and I suppose that professional wheel and tire companies have a full set of keys for those. If so, I'd bet that professional thieves have wheel lock keys also.

    Anyway, it's a deterrent to theft so I'm glad I have them....Richard

We purchased our LX Auto sedan last night. Price with dealer fees was $18,434. The dealer was decent and not overly pushy. They tried to sell the exterior/interior protection plan a bit too much, but that was about it.
  • ish2lish2l Member Posts: 19
how much was your LX before the dealer fees?
  • z71billz71bill Member Posts: 1,986
I know a person who put a $3,500 set of wheels on a car. Then installed wheel locks on all 20 lug nuts. About a month later his wheels were stolen. The thief used a pry bar to pop the trunk - and guess where he kept the "keys" to all the locking lug nuts.

Not only lost his wheels but also had major damage to the trunk.
  • kendridkendrid Member Posts: 97
$18,282. $52 doc fee and $100 'services' fee. I didn't agree to the 'services' fee, but I got the same 18,282 quote from two other dealers in my area and they were also adding on around $100 in fees.

I am still happy with that price so it doesn't bother me that much.
  • tblazer503tblazer503 Member Posts: 620

  • lelandhendrixlelandhendrix Member Posts: 240
Don't be afraid of the splashguards/mudguards, especially if you have an LX.

The rear mudguards only touch the plastic bumper, so you can forget about rust back there.

The front mudguards only touch about one inch of painted metal. The rest is on the underbody trim.

Oh, apply several coats of paste wax first and you should be fine.
  • az2chicagoaz2chicago Member Posts: 10
Can this be right? Grand Honda in Elmhurst, IL is advertising a 2004 Accord LX Automatic for $17895, including destination, and $52.57 doc fee.

I called and talked to a random salesman and he said that the price was good on all LX's, not just the one stock number listed in the ad. Although the ad did say that the "sale" price was only good for today (Friday 11/21) and Saturday.

Are there some new incentives that just came out? Everything I've read in this thread shows the best auto LX prices at 18,282 ($300 under invoice).

Also, does anyone have any guesses on what the incentives will be for the Accord in December? The 1.9/2.9/3.9 financing expires on 12/1. A salesman I talked to said they don't know, but expects the next round of incentives on 12/4.

Its feasible. Honda introduced special rates obviously because inventory wasn't moving like they wanted. Remember the 03...there were no special rates until August 1. They say the economy is recovering...hasn't hit yet.

The figure quoted would be a loss even with the dealer hold back. Some dealers would take the loss, I guess, to move units. I'd be wary of dealer installed options to make up the difference though.
