Thanks to this forum for providing a means to share experiences buying Hondas! Curry Honda in Georgia won my business with the following deal:

    05 Honda Odyssey EX-L R&N (DVD and NAVI) = 32,645

    Freight = 515

    Processing = 399

    Optional Access:

         Cross Bars = 92

         Cargo Tray = 51

         Splash Guards = 42

         Wheel Locks = 47

    Tax = 7 %

    Title = 21

    Grand Total = $36,177

Deal only with the Internet Sales Mgr., very polite, courteous..not your typical sales person.

I have some road noise, but I can't say its specifically coming from the from "air dam". Just how load is the "air dam" noise, ie can you still hear the radio?

Does anyone know how long delivery time is from the factory in Alabama to Colorado? Or to any state about that far away from Alabama, for that matter?
  • michaelamichaela Member Posts: 12
I have been shopping for the EX cloth model since October. My first quote was MSRP. In November it was mainly MSRP - $1500. The dealers were pretty firm in the triangle area. I decided to wait a while. Just called yesterday telling them that I will only pay invoice + $600. I actually got several who would sell me at that price. This proves that you can actually get a good car at a reasonable price if you wait long enough.

To those of you who have been waiting to buy, this seems to be a good time. I just took delivery of my van today. And there were quite a few still on the lot. I think it's because people aren't out car shopping during Xmas season. Anyway, think of a price, name your deal, and keep your fingers crossed.

I love my new van. Two things I am having trouble with. There seems to be a fair amount of wind noise in the vehicle. Also, the driver seat seems stiff and uncomfortable. I am hoping that this is only temporary. Wish me luck.

I drove home a 2005 Silver EXL with RES&NAVI two nights ago. Based on the fact that the Memphis area just recently came off of MSRP and there seems to be a shortage of this model (the next one is scheduled to arrive in 45+ days), I think I got a good deal. I payed $32,600 which included Destination, Mudguards and Wheel Locks. I also got blue book on my trade in (which was very fishy..please see my questions below)

Ok now to the buying experience part. While the salesrep was very cool the finance guy was a real worm. He first walks out and says he can give us a 5.2% rate for 60 months. I have an excellent credit rating. I laughed at him and said that I can get 4.3% from Costco right now. He then said something about "oh well let me run the numbers through the system". Well that was funny, he had said that before he offered the 5.2%. This time he comes back and offers us 4.1%. Jerk.

Ok next up he tries to sell us the warranty of course. High pressure tactics too. First he tries to sell it for $1950. LOL! After I refuse he suddenly offers it at "cost" $1350. I refused again. I'd rather purchase it from somewhere else.

    Now for the questions.

    1) if you had a trade in did they FORCE you to tell them what you owe before offering you trade in value? I fought over this and am ready to call Honda Corp. and complain. That is such bull, but I wasnt prepared to walk away and I knew I was going to force atleast blue book on them (the trade in was probably worth more, it was in excellent condition with only 12.5K miles on it).

    2) Since my 16 mo daughter was having a meltdown I wasn't able to really go over the documentation I was signing (yeah I know..I am an idiot). Anyhow the finance sheet was very weird but it netted out to the correct amount. My question is for those of you who financed through Honda:

Did they put the MSRP price + del fee + accessories in the listed Purchase price and then add your actual discount to your trade in & down payment values? (i.e. Instead of putting 32,6K they put like 34.6K. They then added $2k to my down payment & trade in. It netted ok but looks VERY fishy. The guy didn't explain it to us either. The salesrep has since kind of explained it but I am curious if there is a valid reason they do this.

Bomber, Can you tell me if the 2.9% apr is from Honda (if it is, what dealer did you go to), or from other bank (what bank did you get the 2.9% apr)..Is it for 60 months?

    Thanks,

Brought our 2004 Pilot EX cloth into service yesterday for very minor warranty item. (plastic shroud on driver's seat broke, our fault). Walked through the showroom. Saw new Odyssey. Didn't stop, but salesman saw me walking to service and asked if he could help me. Said I'd check out the Odyssey while waiting for the work to be completed.

We've wanted an Odyssey EX-L, but thought the difference with trading in a EX cloth Pilot would be too much money. Happy with Pilot anyway, though we really like the room of the Odyssey.

Bottom line, after little fanfare, $5,000 to tradeup to Ody EX-L. Took $2,000 off Odyssey ($28,800) and gave $23,800 for Pilot with nearly 20k miles and caked on mud and kid's crap all over it. That seems to be private party value for the Pilot. Oh yeah, they have $200 in doc prep fees. Big deal.

I believe the reason I got the deal is that I had a desirable trade that they could sell quickly (with a thorough cleaning) and I didn't want the Odyssey THAT badly. Not to mention it is mid-December. Both parties literally talked themselves into this deal.

We contemplated buying an Ody in September, but was afraid of paying the "early adopter" price. By waiting and not caring, I think we did better.

Ironically, they had a prospective buyer for the Pilot (someone wanted cloth) while I was still there.

I'm happy with the deal (particularly with the fact that I didn't take 2 weeks to do it).

    Think I did well?

I just picked up a Silver/gray '05 EX-L for $27848 ($299 over invoice) with no other surprises -- comes to $2962 below MSRP. Total was $29830.69 OTD! Has anyone done better than this?

Did lot's of shopping around via internet and working dealers against one another. Seems in the Houston area there is suddenly fairly good availability as all '05 had been pre-sold up until week before Thanksgiving. I started out with best deal as $1000 below MSRP and worked down from there.

After a bunch of lurking here, finally bought an '05 EXL-Res w/Navi this morning at Classic Honda in Streetsboro, OH.

    Invoice w/destination $30,963.76

    Markup over invoice $ 500

    Selling price $31,463.76

Plus $125 title/temp/doc and sales tax.

Paid list on splash guards ($126) and leather wheel cover ($119) as I don't want to hose up the install on these two items. Crossbars and other less invasive add-ons will come from A and H.

Unfortunately the build date for our Sage Brush Pearl over Olive isn't till mid-late Jan so we're looking at a Feb delivery.

Deal was completely straightforward, didn't even discuss the 7/100 $0 ded HondaCare as I'll buy that from Inet sales guy at Dick Brooks in Greer, SC for under $1,100. As I understand it, the warranty prices may change over time, but there is no price difference between buying one on an '05 with 0 miles vs. one with up to 24k.

I'd highly recommend Classic (as others here have previously).

Inet sales mgr at Mike Pruitt in Akron is offering the same deal.

Thanks to all who have provided info here since Sept, makes the buying process SO much easier with less risk of buyers remorse..

    pkcal,

I just drove by Classic and they have 11 Odys on the lot that I could see from the road. Why did you have to wait? To get the right color combo?

    Thanks.

Another option might be for you to drive the van back to NJ with dealer-plates, and return them by overnight parcel service once you have the van registered. But I'm not sure 1) if dealer plates can or should leave their state or 2) if the dealer would loan them to you (who is covered by whose insurance?) Anyway, just my two-cents...
  • craigelfcraigelf Member Posts: 1
Did you make your deal in person or with phone/fax/email?
  • pkcalpkcal Member Posts: 4
As I understand it, NAV is the bigger issue, although color adds to the problem. They only have two vans on the lot with NAV and both are Tourings which we're not interested in b/c of PAX. The rest of their inventory is EXL-RES or EX-Cloth.

They have a silver over grey EXL-RES w/NAV being built later this month that we could have had in early Jan.....but the next 'run' of Sage Brush over Olive wasn't till mid-late Jan.

From what I was told (no idea if its correct, but sounds plausible) instead of making back to back vans of different colors, they make different colors in 'runs' where they'll make a batch of vans with the same exterior color all at once (to avoid setup time/cost to change from one color to the next). The rest of the parts can be different between vehicles of the same ext color because they can simply queue up a grey interior in front of an ivory one and a regular radio behind a NAV system etc so the right parts go in the next van coming down the line.

With the number of different ext colors available on the '05, the different color runs are spaced out a bit and if you miss one run (or in our case the vans from that run are already sold) you end up waiting for the next bus to come along.

This could all be BS and it could be driven by the NAV system supplier capacity constraints or something else....but if I were Honda, I'd start putting the NAVs they have in more EXLRES and fewer Tourings (if that is even possible). All the vans w/NAV I've seen on lots around here are Touring mdls that seem to be slow movers.

Anyone else know what is really driving the delivery date delay (besides demand>supply) on the RES/NAV models?

Made the $500 over deal via email/phone with Mike Pruitt's Inet sales manager then called Classic (they're closer to home and more convenient) and they said they'd match the $500 over deal if I had it in writing. We had already been to Classic and had talked w/a sales guy when the vans first came out in Sept.

Pruitt was pretty aggressive (called me and offered the $500 over deal earlier this week) after we'd been back and forth a few times, ending up $1500 over invoice. Without the Pruitt $500 over deal, I doubt I'd have done better than the $1k over inv I saw posted here from Classic a month or so ago.

I am told 2-3 weeks, typically. I'm in Colo.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Funny, I sent Pruitt an email inquiry about a month ago and they never even bothered to reply.

Per a post here, Park Honda in Akron sent out an email a week or so ago that stated they would sell LXs and EXs at $500 over invoice. I never got a straight answer from them as to whether this offer applies to other than cloth EXs.

Regardless, it appears there's competition aplenty in Greater Akron.
  • denver5357denver5357 Member Posts: 319
Ccompson, I think it is difficult to tell what is what in price on these forums. Generally, it seems most people are getting at best $1K to $1.5K below MSRP on EX-L;s with RES and NAV, but not everyone specifies that last bit so I'm not sure. I, too, e-mailed Pruitt and have had no answer. It might be that if you go to a dealer with inventory at just the right time you do a little better, but out here in Colorado there is very little inventory on EX-Ls.

I purchased a silver gold color at 29K + tax & title from Stockton Honda. Its about $1810 off MSRP. It may not be the best deal around, but i think its one of the better deals in bay area since most dealers couldnt match this price.

I recommend Stockton Honda to all of you. Great guys. Very professional. (They even offered to drive my car back home just incase i couldnt find a friend to take me to stockton).

For bay area Honda buyers i suggest the below method. It worked best for me:

    1) Shop around with local dealers first (Autowest -Fremont, San Leandro Honda, Southbay Honda are more reasonable. Stevens Creek, Larry Hopkins, Andersons are the more greedy ones -- watch out for them).

    2) Use edmunds to shop around peripheral areas. Concord, Vacaville, North SFO, Stockton, Selma Honda etc. These places are within 100-150 miles (roughly 2-3 hrs) & can save u upto $500 bucks.

    3) Push the local dealers as well as remote ones to match each other's prices. I started with the cheapest price of around 30K. Then i got one of the dealers to agree on 29.8K. Two weeks later i was able to bring it down to 29.5K. After some more haggling i got 29K.

    4) Cash in on the color. Like dealers cash in on the color of your preference, u too can cash in on the color thats not your first choice.

Tell the dealer u will deal only if u get a big discount since its not your first choice color.

(I got 500 off because of this)

    5) Cash in on christmas time. Its the dullest week for car dealers. People are busy travelling. Dealers get their fresh supply in Jan they need to get rid of their inventory now.

    Happy car shopping.

BTW, we love every bit of our new Odyssey!

    05 EX-L $27,750 OTD + 7% ohio tax

cccompson the dealer is Park Honda in Akron.

There internet site lets you view inventory and make an offer. I really got lucky with this deal. Good luck with getting the same or better.

Thanks for the info and for the tip on the inventory - it wasn't easy to locate but I found it. I've been in contact with them as I mentioned in an earlier post.

I have a newly "permitted" teen and was going to shop for an EXL NAV/RES in the spring as I will be needing another vehicle. However, I find myself wanting one sooner - like now! I have been religiously reading posts in this forum and have noted that some say to wait toward the end of the month and some say now is time with the holidays, etc. I know that the model that I want is in the most demand but I am now starting to see them in the local dealer's online inventories, many of which seem to be increasing in total number of Odysseys available. I am in SoCal and have +- 30 dealers within a 30-40 mile radius and was considering an email blitz. I have narrowed down the color choices to three and am hoping on taking my wife to a dealer or two today to finalize that piece. So, what's the consensus regarding timing? For the right price, I can take delivery today or in two months. Thanks! PS - several local dealers will sell or order for MSRP but I know that I can do better.

Not the best deal I've seen, but considering this was my 4th dealership to visit and it was 400 miles from home I'm happy.

    Base: $27,150.00

    Addons: Tint, Digishield, Scotchguard. $450.00

    Tax: $1,725.00

    Dealers Tax: $69.69

    Doc Fee: $50.00

    Reg Fee: $60.80

    Title: $33.00

    County Road Bridge: $10.00

    Total OTD: $29,570.24

Lots of high pressure sales once into the finance office. Service Agreement, Tire/gap/life/lojack crud. They tried the old look it only raises your payment by $67/month! Gack, I nearly fell out of my chair. Guess you just have to blow it off and stick to your guns. Finally got 4.3% from Honda after telling them I'd use my e-loan powercheck at 4.55%

Just like everyone else on this board, I love this vehicle. First time I've not purchased a GM vehicle. May never go back.

I don't think what time of the month matters, but all the car sources say it does matter. I got mine for $74.50 over invoice on December 10. I don't think it would be much cheaper on December 31.

You best negotiating tool your have is TIME. You can offer invoice +100 and stay firm but keep the negotiations open. I offered $74.5 over invoice +126.5 for doc, title & tag fees and got it. I had basically one week to buy a car (windstar blew a head gasket) but I never let them know that.

When they decline your offer respond to their e-mail restating you SAME offer and keep the negotiation open buy stating what they gain.

They gain a sell to someone who normally would not visit their lot along with the dealer hold back and one more car sold to help with future Honda alotments.

Make sure include documentation fee and other dealer charges in you offer.

    Regarding special order.

There is no reason to special order a Honda since Honda really doesn't offer any options. With other manufactures such as Toyota I would always special order my vehicle. This way I get exactly what I want on the car. Last year I special ordered a Camery at the beginning of the model year (i.e. no rebates) for $200 over invoice. This is the only way I could get a Camery with leather, and with out sunroof, upgraded radio and side air bags. So I got a good price over invoice and saved on the options I did not want.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
While end of the month (or end of year) may matter to a particular dealer, it has been my experience that more important is the situation described above by obrien040362 - where the dealer is convinced that he is getting an "extra" sale, one that he would not otherwise get.

For reasons I don't quite understand, that seems to apply best when doing business long distance (or, at least, out of town).

If I was in the business, it seems to me it would best to treat every customer that way but, alas, most stores (certainly many of those in urban areas) don't feel that way, apparently believing the next customer is right around the corner.
  • s2000fevers2000fever Member Posts: 37
Wow! Thanks for the great feedback. I took my wife to two dealers today to scope out colors. We were able to see everything that we had been interested in and narrowed down to Ocean Mist, Sage Green, and Slate Green. Both dealers tried to push for a deal but neither had what I wanted. One brought in the Sales Mgr. who told me they could find one for me. Basically, what did I think about a $500 deposit and the van at MSRP. I told him that I would entertain a negotiation at about $2,000 below MSRP - this is what I see people paying for them. He thought that was strange as he was selling them all day at MSRP. (He had about 10 Ody's on the lot - 3 were base Tourings). I told him he should make sure he prays every night before he goes to bed that this continues. He also told me couldn't keep the Tourings on the lot so go figure. Next thing out of his mouth was $500 under MSRP. I left my cell # but advised not to call me unless he wanted to deal at my terms. Going forward, I will only make contact via email. I didn't want to visit the lots but I had to make a color decision. NOTE: One dealer was owned by Sonic and the other by Autonation, both publicly traded companies and both have a 12/31/04 quarter end/year end. I can only imagine that there will be a push to make quaterly and year-over-year numbers - both were down in total revenues for 2003 vs. 2002.

Just picked up 05 Ody EX for $26,200 (plus $289 processing/docu fee, tax, tag, etc.) includes splash guards, mats, wheel locks, destination fee.

Other dealer promised to throw-in free oil changes/car washes for a year for the same price. But had already decided to go with the previous.

Prices are coming down, good luck!!!

Could you tell me the name of the dealership where you made your purchase? Since I'm shopping in the Dallas area, I'd like to be prepared for those tactics or maybe even avoid that dealership. Were there other DFW dealers you talked to?

By the way, your "base price" quote is in-line with the quotes I've received from 3 dealerships in the DFW area. It's still approx. $700-$900 more than I'm willing to pay for the EX cloth so I'm going to hold out a little longer.

What sort of appliances can we plug in to the 115v AC outlet. The wattage allowed is 100 watts (I guess that means laptops are ruled out,my laptop is 4.25 amps, i dont think any device more than 1.25 amps will fit in)

How about a car vacuum ?

    Hello everyone,

I am ready to start the process of buying an EXL-NAV & RES. This will be a first for me, so I have a few questions.

    1. When I call these dealers do I tell them what I want (make, model) and then tell them the price I am willing to pay and have it go from there. I don't want to get side-tracked by a lot of questions, I will be trading a car in, but know to do that after a price has been reached.

    2. Do I just call several dealers and tell them the same thing and see who agrees or do I just go to the internet person and send an email with my price?

    3. I have tried to contact Bedard Brothers but I have not received a response via email - should I call or visit in person (they are about 3 hours away)?

    4. Has anyone leased or has everyone gone through financing and if you choose to lease does that change one's negotiating options?

I know this is a lot of questions but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I tried but Park would not do the same deal with me. They came reasonably close (about $400 over invoice plus $100 doc fee). As I told them though, I simply won't buy if I know someone else got a better deal.

If I'm wrong in declining their offer, it won't be the first time my stubborness led me astray.

To start, simply send emails to 20 or so stores in your area. Ask for their best price on the model of your choice. You will get some replies and some will be non-responsive. You should have a good idea after this first round as to who's serious about selling and who's not.

By all means, call Bedard if you wish but from what I've seen of late their prices (about $1000 off MSRP) doesn't seem all that good. There are great prices (no more than $1000 over invoice) in NE Ohio if you're willing to fly into Cleveland or Akron-Canton.

Negotiate the price and then talk about leasing, a more complex subject. For what it is worth, there's a dealer here in Columbus offering to lease an EX cloth for $315 per month for 63 months with, I believe, $350 down. I'm not a fan of long leases so I don't personally think that is such a great deal but it depends on one's needs.

    Good luck!

Around the Colo. area, dealers seem to be sticking to about $1,000 less than MSRP for an EX-L with DVD and NAV. I did hear back from a dealer in NE Ohio who quoted $3500 less than MSRP, but there was only one color and I would have to fly to Ohio and drive back in the dead of winter. Figure flight/hotel/gas/food would probably be at least $1,000, so that gets me to $1,000 below MSRP vs. $2,500. Then there is the cost of my time to drive (vacation time, probably). So to me, that deal is getting near close to even. Guess I could ship, but that likely would still cost, I assume, about $1K (a good company).

I keep reading about emailing dealers. How do you do it ? goto honda.com and locate a dealer and Request a quote for every dealer in the area ? Is there a script somewhere where i can send email to all of the dealers in my area ? Isn't it a bother to fill out the form for every dealer ?

    thanks

That's one way of doing it. You can also use our dealer locater/contact form. Just start with the "new cars" tab, build your vehicle, and the form will pop up at some point.

Just got home from the dealership with our new 05 Ody EX-L RES (sage brush pearl exterior, olive interior).

I had been looking for about 3 weeks seriously. Most dealerships in the Denver area would only come off MSRP by about $1k. After reading this forum, I decided I was willing to pay about $1K over invoice, no more. That is the deal I got, however I had to go to Team Honda in Colorado Springs to get it (about a 1 1/2 hour drive from where I live).

I had the deal in writing and went to John Elway Honda who has a policy of matching other deals (or so the sales person told us). They were not willing to meet this deal, so I purchased from Team Honda in Colorado Springs. They were excellent and handled everything very professionally.

    Here is what I paid:

    $29987.00 ($1k over invoice)

$299 dealer handling (this is offset by my accessories, see below)

Free auto day/night mirror and 3rd row sunshades (I wanted these and invoice on them is about $370, so it offsets the dealer handling charge)

    No installation charge on accessories

Sales tax for my county: 7.85% = $2377

    Total (w/o tax): $30286

Total (incl tax): $32663 Out the Door

This is about $930 over invoice (including accessories that I specified).

The vehicle arrived (from Alabama) to their dealership on Saturday, they ordered my accessories which arrived this morning (Tuesday). I picked up the van Tuesday night.

So far, very happy. I'll post more later.

Great deal, birddog. I live in Denver area and my experience has been like yours. Good tip on Team Honda. I'll contact them.

I assume your van did NOT have NAVI?

Any issues with 1) wind noise. or 2) seat comfort?

    Thanks.

I am wondering what is the right price for extended warranty 7year/100K for Odyssey 05 from Honda manufacturer? Do we need to purchase when we buy the car, or can be added later on before the 3year/36K original warranty expires?

    Thanks

Just like to thank the people sharing their buying experiences on this forum, We will be picking up our Redrock Pearl EX-L from a local dealer tonight. The buying experience was very smooth without dirty tricks or high pressure to buy additional accessories. I refused everything else they wanted to sell to me and stuck to my offering price.

    Here are the numbers:

    EX-L: $28500 ($951 over invoice)

    doc fee: $229

    Reg & Title: $84.50

    Tax: $1425

    OTD total: $30238.50

    The whole family is excited!

Congrats on your new car. That's the same color we want. Ours is supposed to come in this weekend.

I assume (since you left it out) you did not get DVD nor NAVI? Did you get a sunroof? Thanks.
