Yes, A-plan is actual dealer cost (invoice price - holdback) and I'm pretty sure that X-plan is 4% higher. A website I found stated that for Mazda, dealer holdback is 2% of the invoice price. With those numbers, a base Mazda 6s would cost about $375 over invoice for someone who had X-plan. My dealer estimated that S-plan would be around invoice...so if X-plan is really the same price as S-plan, then I'm thinking that maybe the 2% number I found online is incorrect.

Does anyone know what the actual holdback is for Mazda?

I just posted in the problems board at how boring that board has been lately. Even when a post comes in it's usually about how comfy the seats are or aren't. Someone please post a problem(make it good)and if you're not able to just make something up. That darn Honda board is so busy with posts that I'm getting jealous. No car can be that good. Then again...

I just got my sport grille today, man does it go well with the front end. I highly recommend to all owners that for couple of hundred bucks it's the best thing you could to beauty it up.(as if it needs it) I wasn't crazy about the chrome mustache before but now it seems really ugly in comparison.

I haven't seen a 6 with the sport grille, but I don't think that the grille flatters the car. It makes the 6 looks like the Camry! Looks are subjective however ;).

The lack of Mazda6 problems however is something I'm more than happy to see. Good to see that Mazda seems to have quality as part of Priority 1!

aftermarket Leather seats(covers) available for the 6 that fit perfectly?

If so, then I can think of going for the 6, else.....

Alcjen & Aromas: Thank you for your comments, I do appreciate the feedback. The ability to drive
in all type of weather is important, espically if I want to be able to get to work ;>)

MazdaMarla: I hope this does not sound stupid but besides having the dealer install leather & heater, is there anything else they can install since there are certain items I dont want/need in the darn packages Mazda puts together. Also how do you find out if the dealer can do it, is it a simple as asking.
  • aromasaromas Member Posts: 314
I know it's your opinion but a Camry? In what way, the Camry's is black and the ridges are angular on the 6. I don't see any similarities whatsoever! If anything I think it's similar to the Jettas which is very sharp but the 6's is more aggressive looking which suits the car perfectly. I was trying to like the chrome grille but it just doesn't suit the car's body.

Stretchsje: My car's silver but from the pictures I've seen it looks really sharp in red or yellow, would go perfectly with those nice new rims you got.

Richn: Aside from the safety features(ABS, airbags) the dealer can pretty much install anything you want aftermarket. Pick up an accessory brochure if you are looking for cosmetic things. What are you looking for?

You can find leather aftermarket seats at:

    http://www.classicsofttrim.com

They have many colors and are the source somebody on here posted last month. The place his dealer ordered from. Classic Soft Trim has installers in many states, check their location list.

how does that bose system sound in the six. And do you guys actually think that it is worth the extra cash!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anybody no how many watts the stereo is?????
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
Fowler3: Those aftermarket leather seats appear to be manually controlled.

Buddy2: Welcome to the M6 club! Enjoy your car to the fullest! I sure do! Great car for the price (< $30K) that will just about even the field with some of the German (> $30K)imports!

Cookie01: I received my Mazda survey yesterday, so it took about 3 - 4 weeks. Good luck on your airfare reimbursement!

Mazdamarla: Do you mean the dealers mag,Mazda Fuel? The dealership where I bought my 6 had plenty to give out. I have the 2nd & 3rd issue. Very infomative with good articles on Mazdas and the design history of the 6 and the RX-8. Usually you can pick them up at any Mazda dealership.

Skyray: You're right about the all-weather (Weather-Tech) floor mats. They sure keep mud, snow, grime, water, etc contained to keep your carpet clean. Just hose it off to clean. My salesguy surprised me by shipping out 4 Weather-tech mats to me for his appreciation of making the sale. I think he's trying to win points on the survey. He's a great guy anyway.

aromas: You're right about the sports grille! It makes the 6 look more distinct. No way does it look like a Camry! See my pics posted at: www.msnusers.com/mazda6group

Well, just waiting for my custom cut window tint films to arrive from Gila films. Hey, if people think I'm boasting too much I'm just proud to own one of the greatest handling cars made. It's like your kids (for those who have any) you always want to let them know that you're proud of them! It provides them a positive outlook and they stay out of trouble.
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
Buddy_2: To me, the Bose system sounds great once you have it set correctly. It's 200 watts, full range speakers at each door, tweeters mounted at each A-pillar and a sub-woof at the rear. Crank it up and it just blows you away! It also has a nice feature by keeping up the sound level as your car roars.
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
Expecting 2"- 4" of snow tomorrow here in southern New England. Can't wait to drive in it with the 6 again :-) Don't need to use the Rodeo (4WD), because the 6 can handle it as well as the slick/icy roads!

    Hi Ruefus,

I am also interested in the S-plan pricing breakdown, so I can get some sense of what I might actually pay for a 6s. If I decide to buy a 6, that is probably what I will use. Or I guess I could use the A-plan through my Dad who's a Ford retiree. Anyhoo, would you please email me a copy of your S-plan document? My email address is in my user profile. Thanks so much!

Any similarities between the 6 and Camry are limited to the sport grille where Camry has one that looks similar to the 6's. I've never been a big fan of the Camry and associating the grille with the Camry is the closest approximation I have to the 6's sport grille. Call it classical conditioning! I've seen so many Camry's on the road with the grille on, images of the 6 with that option automatically remind me of the Camry.

As far as comparing the 6 to the Jetta? I don't see it. The Jetta is inherently boxy, and although the Jetta is fast, the 6 is much sleeker and sportier in my eyes making both cars two different beasts.

Any way, comparing the 6 to other cars on the market is moot. The 6 looks and performs like nothing on the market today! That is, until the TSX arrives on Acura lots next month.

alcjew, the grille looks much better on your black 6, it looks like it's meant to be a part of the car which is not the case with other colors where seamlines between body panels are more prominant (of any car color, seamlines on black cars blend in best). I would still rather pass on the grille when my time comes to own a 6 :). Again, just my taste. Then again, it really takes seeing something in person to truly gauge looks. There's still some hope left! :)
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
The tweeters are actually located on the door/window frame, not the A-pillar per se, behind the side mirrors.
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
zaimon: I think the standard grille still looks good on the 6. I was going to ask the dealer where I purchased my 6 if he still has the one they took off my car and installed the sports grille (dealer installed option). I'll switch them depending on the mood. The satin alum fuel filler door was also dealer installed, but they left the original one with the car.
The TSX looks nice, I think I read that it comes only with a 4 cyl (not that 4's are bad) and uses premium. Anyway, there should be plenty of 6's, if you decide to, for you to choose when you're ready to buy. Good luck!
  • zaimonzaimon Member Posts: 124
There's no way that premium fuel will work in the bay area. Gas prices for 87 octane alone are around $2.23 in San Francisco, another +$.20 for 91 octane!!!

The TSX is nice, and the 4 cyl. puts out pretty high for it's displacement (200hp, ~150 lbs/ft torque), not to mention the 6-sp (something that should at least be an option with the 6s). Base price of the TSX is also $25,000 (with an almost guaranteed added dealer markup for the paltry 15,000 units available this year), more than I would like to pay. I can get the 6 at fleet price at the very least, or if I wait long enough, S-plan, whichever is better. In a year's time, I would like to think that the content in the 6 will be similar to the TSX (NAV, MP3 player, TCS...). Plus, the 6 hatchback looks more enticing to me!

Have fun with your 6! I wish my garage had one sitting inside it!
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
I will call them up & get a quote for the 6
  • zaimonzaimon Member Posts: 124
Ok aromas, I agree to disagree. It's only a grille...
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Yep. Don't you two grille each other over it! :)
  • stretchsjestretchsje Member Posts: 700
Ouch. <tap, tap> "Is this thing on?"
  • cookie01cookie01 Member Posts: 369
I have the chrome fuel door too and I also left the dealer with the bodycolor door in a plastic bag inside the trunk.

In a way that's sorta cool. If the chrome door gets dinged or scratched badly, I can just put on the bodycolor door.

I thought it was my dealer "just being nice" but possibly for purchasing a chrome accessory you get TWO doors??

    Interesting.

I finally test drove a 6 yesterday. It was a 6s, AT, speed yellow, sport package. The salesperson let me really test the cars performance and really explained everything. Of course I new more than him thanks to you guys and gals here. Just kidding, he did an excellent job. I couldn't control my excitement the entire time. Best test drive I've ever had.

By the way, I am now a 6 owner...sort of. My Redfire Metallic 6s, AT, sport package, moonroof, bose, sport grille etc. won't be in until March 21st. I bought from Jeff Haas in Houston. I was sold on the service from my very first email contact. Purchase price was 3% over invoice. The overall experience was great and I would do it all again just for another test drive before I get my car. I had a better offer from another dealership on an inbound vehicle, but they were rude and didn't seem to be too interested in actually selling the car to me. I know the 6 sells itself, but they could have pampered me a little. Offer me a Coke or something. Make me feel welcome. Just my opinion.

Sport grille: I really like the sport grille. I haven't seen it on the Redfire Metallic, but it looks great on the MazdaSpeed Yellow. It really gives the car a more sporting look. The standard chrome doesn't excite me. My fiance likes the chrome, but I don't. We're not married yet, so I win. My car isn't coming with the grille from the factory. Since the dealership is installing it, does that mean I get the other grille?

Gauges: The red instrument cluster gauges light up 24/7. I think that's cool.

Bose: I've read numerous postings about the Bose audio system. Although it wasn't perfect, I think it will suit my needs just fine. As a financed option, I don't mind springing for this addition. Of course I really have to try hard to hear the difference between a good cassette and a cd.

Leather: This will be my first car with leather. I never wanted leather seats, but these really feel comfortable.

Floor Mats: Nice and thick with the Mazda 6 inscribed. Great!

Trunk and rear folding seats: My 97 Galant has split folding seats, but the opening is really narrow. No use at all. The 6 has an impressively wide opening that really ads to the carrying capacity.

Air vents: My only problem with the 6 is the circular air vent ducts. I'm more into rectangular styling, but I had to find a gripe to give this a journalistic unbiased tone.

Total price: $25,949 out the door

    Overall: Dealership=Happy Salesperson=Happy Buyer=Happy

I saw my first one in person yesterday, on the side of the road at the dealership. It was a base 6i with plastic wheel covers in yellow. The basic wheels do nothing for the appearance of the car, IMO, but the yellow was nice enough.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
They did the right thing letting you keep your original door. You do own it after all.

And in case the chrome one breaks, you got a spare. :)
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
When the dealer installs an add-on to replace something that comes standard with your car, they should give you the original part, since you "paid" for that as well. You might have to ask for it (as they may think many owners won't care about it). I got my original floor mats when I got the all-weather ones, and when they put my MP3 player in, I'll expect the original CD deck back.

As for the grill.. I think the best-looking option I've seen is having the stock grill repainted in body color. I don't mind the chrome enough to want to change it, though.
  • toolman02toolman02 Member Posts: 59
626to6: We must be related. Everything you said in your review/post is exactly the same situation I'm in, from liking the Redfire and the sport grille right down to replacing my 97 Galant (whose transmission and AC died after 52k miles). The one I test drove had the exact config you're getting too. I'd be interested in how you would compare the two cars, so if you're not too busy driving it after the 21st, could you email me with your thoughts? Thanks!

I know this is a wierd request, but has anyone tried to put a bike in the trunk using the fold down seats? I'm curious to know if it would fit.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
Yours will probably fit in a 6's trunk.
  • mpiatekmpiatek Member Posts: 68
626to6: It isn't that strange of a question. That was one of the things I was concerned about too. I go mountain biking occasionally, and right now I can just throw my bike in the back of my pickup. The 6 isn't quite as easy (though I haven't tried it yet), but the trunk definitely looks big enough to fit a bike into, especially if you take off the front wheel.

That's why I got the trunk tray as an accessory. I want to make sure when I throw my bike or my bodyboard in there that it won't get everything else dirty too. :-)

  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
How about getting one of those nike racks that goes on the trunk of the car? That would work better than having to fold the seats and all, I would think. Of course, if you plan to leave the car, this could present a problem.
  • m6owneronedaym6owneroneday Member Posts: 23
I know the Mazda6 has some screwed up option packages at this point but 3 options I was hoping would be available was the GPS Nav, Dynamic Stability Control and Xenon Headlights. Already email Mazda about it. I am a 22yr old college grad and have gotten really tired of my '99 Civic. Too loud, no power and tiny car. Was going to wait for '04 Mazda6 to roll out before getting one. So far I have seen 5 M6 w/ Sports package in California between SF and Santa Barbara, CA. Hope to see more of them on the road soon.

626to6 wrote: but it looks great on the MazdaSpeed Yellow.

Are you talking about MazdaSpeed 6? Does it exist? I bought my yellow Protege5 from Jeff Haas too, great dealer.

Paul: There is no way I would transport $4k bike using the bikerack, this baby should stay safe inside the hatch, protected from wind, rain, road debris...
  • mpiatekmpiatek Member Posts: 68
The main reason I'm not considering a bike rack is because a lot of them scratch the paint on the car, even if the bike rack is well padded. There's no way I'm going to let my bike scratch my 6. :-)

  • zaimonzaimon Member Posts: 124
My tally on 6-spotting remains at two... There just aren't many new 6's around NorCal although I've seen an abundance of Accords and even the new H2 (this past weekend I had to have seen at least 6 or 7 driving back and forth between San Francisco and Tahoe and at the ski resort!).

One reason I'm waiting for the hatch is I transport my bike in the cargo area of the Tribute for daily use on campus. I bought a $20 fork mount from the local bike store, attached it to the space tire cover in the Tribute's hatch and just mount the bike inside the car for the 15 mile commute. Much better than leaving it on campus (my campus is notorious for having the most bikers per capita, but also themost bike thefts in the nation). I'm hoping the hatch will provide cargo dimensions large enough to accomodate the same setup.

If that doesn't work, I'll probably either get the 6 "hitched" or put a roof rack on. I know someone here put a hitch on their 6 already, how's that holding up? Has anyone installed a roof rack (thule/yakima) and care to share their experience?

    TIA, Jeff
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
The thing about a roof rack is sometimes I'm so tired out from a good fast ride that I have to rest a bit before I can heft my bike up onto it (I have a Mondial unit). I might try a hitch-mounted rack on my next car. The trunk-mounted ones get dirt under and around their feet (roof racks do the same so I always remove it when I'm not using it), and scuff the paint there.

They all make the car handle more sloppily, so I just toss my bike into the trunk when I'm going by myself.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I was hoping to at least see the stability control as an option here, it was promised to the US in some earlier articles I saw. I am surprised Mazda would offer an all-new car without the latest safety technology.
  • metenuzerometenuzero Member Posts: 32
Do CD-Rs play back well in the cd player? I know other mazda factory cd players have had problems in playback quality.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
when people go out to buy "other" comparable cars do no make an issue out of the package options....they crib..but do buy it.

But with the 6....what is going on?
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
Yep, CD-Rs play back fine in the factory player.

    Haven't tried an RW yet.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
I get quite a bit of skipping with CD-Rs. So much so that I've been bringing my factory pressed CDs in my car (I hate doing that). When the MP3 unit is available, I'm hoping it will take care of this concern as I know of no way to get a factory pressed MP3 disc.
  • toolman02toolman02 Member Posts: 59
i think the main problem people have is the how much the options are tied together. Want a moonroof? All you have to do is get the comfort package and leather and Bose and ...

It would be one thing if it just adds a little bit to the price. But adding 2k for all the extra options when all you really wanted was a moonroof is getting to people.

Another common gripe: Want the sport package? I hope you like the black interior, because you're getting it whether you like it or not.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I found the same thing when I went to look at an Altima and an Accord. One thing is that you have to pay for the V6 engine in order to get traction control, which is totally unfair.

With the Altima in particular, you have to buy a handful of options in order to get something you want. It might make the cars easier to build, but it's unfair to the customers.
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
    MaltB,

I've never had a CD-R skip in my stock single-disc player. I'd suggest trying a different brand of CD. Some players have problems with some color discs. The AT&T and FujiFilm discs I got from Best Buy work just great.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
I have used different brands...no dice. These are the same CDs that I'd play without any trouble in my B3000 which had a stiffer ride. What I wonder is if anyone knows the difference between data CD-Rs and audio CD-Rs. I don't want to buy a spool and burn all my music again to find that there is no difference.
  • m6owneronedaym6owneroneday Member Posts: 23
maltb, what speed are you burning CD-R's at? I know some lasers don't pick up CD-Rs burned at high speed well. I noticed my 16X burns occassionally skip where 8x burns don't. Ppl still say that 4x gets a better burn but I don't want to wait 20mins. Try a lower burn speed. That might read in your player. I don't think there is a difference between data and audio CD-R, I wouldn't bother with it.
  • bluong1bluong1 Member Posts: 1,927
The only difference between the CDR audio from the data one is an additional markage which is used to detect that you already paid tax on it. Only the (audio) burner should detect this markage. The player doesn't care where the media is from.

Anyone here have pictures of the Bose speakers and Sub? I am wondering what the quality is like. I am guessing they are using cheap paper type cones. Debating if the Bose is worth $600 or should I get an 55Wx4 amp and 4 6x8 JL Audio. That would give me a good amount of bass w/o the sub too. If anyone has installed the amp and new speakers, do the steering wheel controls for volume still work?
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
I burn at 16x so maybe I'll slow it down.
  • richn2richn2 Member Posts: 44
Aromas: Sorry for not replying sooner.... Thank you for the info. not sure what I would want the dealer to install never did it before. I was the buyer dealers love, would order a $1200 package just for 1 item which would happen alot since no one package had everything you would want. So all I would have to do is get the option brochure then pick and choice what I want....thats way cool.
Not to be a bother but what is the Splan I see people posting abiut. Once again thanks everybody for helping me.
