To inform both of you, dealers DO order exact cars for their allocation.
If your request is placed early enough in the month, you can the EXACT car you are looking for. We do this all the time. However, once the allocation comes to us (at the end of the month)then we have to make a choice as to the colors and models. We will then use the SWAG method. If you've been in the military you know what SWAG is.
Honda does have certain restrictions on some models, for example, at the first allocations for the 2002 we could only get 40% of our orders as leather/dvd/nav units. They were having some supplier issues. I think that they have worked out theose issues. Also our total allocation is SKU'd toward certain models, and we have to take them...for example the LX.
We are now going through the time of the year when Honda cuts back on their production, so dealers probably wont be getting the same numbers of Odysseys that they were a couple of months ago. DX's or Dealer exchanges are almost non-existent with Odysseys and S2000's.
I have an O2 with about 200 miles. The gear shift lay out is the same as my old '99 EX. However, I can tell when the 5th gear is working as the motor slows and lugs slightly. I can't tell what happens when I pull to D-3 but I am almost sure it drops through 4th to 3rd.
On the roof rack crossbars, did the dealer get them on right? Some members have complained of this noise only to find that they were installed backward. I don't have them but if I remember right, which I doubt if I did that they are shaped so that one side cuts the wind better than the other side. hope you understand what I am trying to say.
We're getting ready to get the '02 with the DVD option. The rep told us that by getting it installed by them, but not by the factory, they can add a TV tuner for the same price. Has anybody done this, or have any advice to offer? Thanks in advance!
Has antone bought through the CBS credit union members? Can you pick the color. I am on the 1 year waiting list from last September at the Viginia dealer. Need help or advice on this system. Oredered Ex and will get it at around $2500.00 under sticker. Thanks.........
Its not CBS..it's UBS...and I am on their waiting list also...having my doubts about under sticker though...I was told @2500 below msrp also, however when I called them and askd the price they said MSRP..I said I was told 2500 below MSRP, they said not on the Odyssey...I am not sure what to think!
UBS not CBS thanks. tom477 are you waiting at the Virginia dealer? They told me around $2500 off sticker as well as UBS them selves. I have also read in this town hall about others actually getting the odyssey below sticker around $2500.00. Just was not clear on the color game. Was told the color comes in you can take that or wait on next one. How long did they tell you you have to wait? Also if we are waiting 1 year why would you still get it at sticker?
TV tuners don't work very well in vans while going down the road. I would prefer my unit being factory installed. Also insurance companies don't like covering add on items.
If you have genuine Honda parts in your Ody, they are covered under the Honda Care Warranty. For instance, I put in an i-VES in my 2001 EX and since it's a Honda part, it is covered until my HCW runs out (7/100/$0). Same with other odds and ends I added along the way. My insurance company did not fuss about the add-ons; they just needed a list of items so they have records of them. The insurance did not go up as a result.
Yes I am waiting ....however. the van I'm driving now is just about ready for the junk pile! Dont think I can wait til my Odyssey comes in around next sept! and I really cant afford to pay sticker for it ..I have 5 kids! We'll see what happens I guess
I thought I would mention that the DVD player in the RES can play CD-RWs but not CD-Rs. The CD player can play either. At least that was my experience.
In addition the DVD player will play VCD (Video CDs) on CD-RW media. I made a VCD this weekend of some PBS shows for my kids. It took some work and some help from vcdhelper.com but it was a success.
I was reading an article of late (can't remember which mag it was from). But it stated that Honda will be building a new plant for Ody's. The plant is supposed to be in the US. This way the Ody's and the MDX could up the production. Does anyone know anything about this? If so- it would greatly alleviate the old- waiting list- and provide the necessary leway to negotiate below sticker. No reason for everyone to pay MSRP in today's market. It's unfair to dealers as well- just think how many people would buy the Ody- if you could actually see and drive one at a dealer?
Thenew plant is being built in Alabama. Reports vary as to when it will be actually up to production but think mayebe a few months.
It will indeed help with the lists on the Ody and teh MDX but keep in mind Honda also plans an Acura version of the Ody and a Honda version of the MDX. While I expect the waiting list to go I don't think We're looking at discounted Odys any time in the near future.
Of course I just bought mine, so maybe it's wishful thinking....
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
You must be new here as we have been talking about that for at least a year now. The US plant is done and they have already started a slow build. Won't be up to full production until next spring. After that happens the Canada plant will stop making the Odyssey and tool up for a Honda version of the MDX. So there won't be anymore Odysseys entering the pipeline than there is now, but we gain an Honda MDX or what ever they call it. So that will give them another vehicle to sell at MSRP or above.
Well, after looking on this site for months. Trying to drive a 2001 in Northern California area (yea right). Then 2002's getting closer and closer I decided to hold off for the 2002. As of about 24 hours ago I am a proud owner of RRP EXL w/DVD. Took a train to go get it and then a long drive back, but I have found the nicest most considerate dealer/salesperson I have ever delt with. Paid MSRP nothing over, nothing added and surprised on me. Can't tell you to much about the Van yet but, I AM EXCITED. For the 180 miles home it was great. Friday was my birthday, came in way earlier than I thought it would, great BD present!
and when we picked the Odyssey up it had a card attached to the rearview mirror about a quality control inspection. It said that Honda Headquarters would be calling to do a telephone survey regarding how professionally our needs were handled. Excellent is a passing "grade"; but Very Good is a failing "grade". The card said that if we could not say excellent, then to please call the dealership so that they can correct the situation to our satisfaction. Everything was fine and they will receive an Excellent from us, but I wondered if this is done at every Honda dealership? Has anyone else received this card?
Every dealer does it differently. My dealer sends a note in the mail within 24 hours saying that Honda may contact me with a survey and that anything other than excellent is a failing grade.
My understanding that bonuses are tied to their CSI score so they want only excellents.
Yes my dealer explained to me that anything less then perfect is a failing grade. Maybe that dealer guy here, can tell us what happens to dealers, if they do not get perfect scores.
I decided that, even though no one is perfect, that I wanted to play the game, the way the game is played. The dealer has treated me well with some problems, but overall I am satisfied. So I gave them a perfect score, so far.
It is that way at a number of other places also. For example at many colleges and universities an average grade is now an A. At Harvard, 91% of the undergraduate class graduates with honors. Honors use to be reserved for about the top 25%. In the military you want your evaluation report to be perfect or you probably will not be promoted.
So giving the dealer a perfect score means, not that he is perfect. It just means that he is doing a satisfactory job. The words perfect and excellent have been redefined, from what they use to mean.
Well, I've been following the posts for about a month now, and now I am happy to say we picked up our MB EX/L on Thursday night. Already drove it on a day trip to Julian in San Diego, very comfortable.
Did not have to wait long. Called dealer end of September, signed paperwork last Monday, came in last Thursday. Whole process took a little under three weeks.
Would have had to wait until "sometime after the end of the year" for a MB EXL/RES, so we decided to go aftermarket. Scheduled for install tomorrow, Audiovox 6.8" Monitor, DVD player, FM modulator, TV tuner, 2 wireless headphones, converter for plugging in Playstation, everything installed w/ tax for $1200. This also includes installing the in-dash CD-changer we got from Dalt's Honda in Canada, which coincidentally came in today (thanks to people on the board who brought this up, what a deal!)
So far very happy with the vehicle. Power doors have not been as intuitive as I would have liked, and the speakers could be better.
How is the quality on the DVD player (factory installed)? Does anyone get car sick watching it (I have heard having it up at eye level or higher decreases this). Just curious. Can the mid and backseats all view the screen ok (and hear w/ the speakers)? I know my Civic speakers are not great. Thanks in advance.
I just called my dealer to add the DVD option to my origianl EX-L order. Originally, back in August when I placed the order, the dealer told me that they would notify me of the build date and at that time I could make final modifications. To my surprise, when I called, the manager informed me that it was too late. Even though the build date will be Oct 23, once they place the order, it is final. Is this true? If it isnt built yet, why cant I add options, change colors etc..? Any dealers out there to confirm/deny this? Thanks, John
The sound in the back with the speakers is awsome. We picked ours up last thursday and the wife drove the 100 miles home while the kids and I watched a movie. Really cool!!!! The screen looks quite small, but put a DVD in and it seams to come to life.
I notice a problem with the Odyssey, I have not had with any other car, I have ever owned. Instead of the front tire stopping the car, when I bump up against the parking stop block or the curb, in front of the car, something underneath hits.
I do hit it gently, when this happens. But still, I don't like the sound it makes of metal hitting. I hope I am not damaging anything underneath.
Had my 2001 Odyssey for almost a year. Thinking of buying the HondaCare extended warranty 7/100K/0. Does anyone know which dealership would sell it below $1K ? What is the fair market value? I heard we can purchase the warranty within one year or 12000 miles after purchase. Thanks.
The Honda Care warranty can supposedly be purchased right up to the point that the factory warranty expires (3 years or 36k miles, whichever comes first). In any case, there is no 1 year/12k mile deadline. Current best prices reported here for the 7/100k/0$ are between $850 and $900. www.odyclub.com has a forum dedicated to Odyssey extended warranties; you should be able to find information there on dealers selling the Honda Care warranty (or aftermarket warranties) for competitive prices.
The lowest prices you will find on the 7/100k/0$ HCW in this forum (less than $900.) are based on the van having less than 1 yr./ 12K miles, so if you've made the decision, don't wait.
A word of advice: I just want to share my nightmare experience with Metro Honda from Southern California. They are less than honorable. I was dealing with Claudia Salazar. The van finally came last Wednesday. While I was making arrangement with her on the phone to pick up my 02 Ody EX-L, she had me on hold. When she came back, she told me that she just sold the van to the customer who just walked in the door. I told her that I was 1st on the waiting list and she didn't care. I will never buy anything from Metro Honda again.
We have a quote for 4 Nokia Hakkapelita (sp?) snow tires for our Odyssey at $100/ea. We also have a quote for Cooper Weatherall with STUDS for$80/ea. Obviously, money-wise we are better off with the Cooper tires but we have always used Nokia tires. Unfortunately, we were told that the Nokia's do not have studded tires in the size that the Odyssey uses. Has anyone had any experience with the Cooper tires or any recommendations on a different brand of studded tires?
I've been shopping for an Odyssey in the SF Bay Area for about a month now, and the half dozen or so dealers I've contacted have all been firm at $1000-2500 over MSRP.
BUT - I'm happy to report that I discovered Ocean Honda (831-464-1500) in Capitola, just south of Santa Cruz. I just took delivery today of my 2002 GG EX-L for exactly MSRP (plus destination charge) and no other charges except tax (love that CA sales tax), license, a $5 "CA tire fee" and a $45 doc preparation fee. All Ocean Honda staff I dealt with were pleasant and low key, and I was very happy with the buying experience.
If you're interested, contact Shawn who handles Internet sales, and tell her you were referred by Greg of Palo Alto. A couple things you should know: she told me that when they get a new Odyssey in, they give priority to local residents. If it doesn't sell to a local after 24 hours, they then open it up to outsiders (which includes the Bay Area), and then it's "first come first served" to the first qualified buyer to walk in the door -- they won't hold the vehicle.
So the way this played out in my case: I originally called Shawn on a Thursday with my preferred colors. She called me on Saturday saying a GG EX-L had just become available. So I dropped everything and made the 45-minute drive. She had my cell phone so she could call me in case someone walked in the door and beat me to it. The GG EX-L was fresh off the truck and hadn't been prepped. I looked it over to my satisfaction and signed the papers and paid for it. I had already arranged financing through my credit union, so it was essentially a cash purchase. They were offering Honda financing at 6.45%, but my credit union is at 6.2% (and I'm going to refinance with a home equity loan after that to get tax-deductible interest). I then picked it up today -- they did a good job explaining all the features to me.
So, I wound up making two 1.5-hour round trips to save $1,000.00, which I am happy to do anytime. From my one data point, prices may be coming down in the Bay Area proper: the local Palo Alto Honda dealer was quoting $2500 over MSRP as of Sep 24, and is now quoting $1000 over MSRP. A week ago a dealer in Fremont was $1000 over MSRP, but the 4-5 other dealers I've contacted in the past two weeks were all $1500 or more over. I guess even with the tech slowdown, there are enough people in the Silicon Valley area that can't be bothered to save $1000+.
We did it. We had our names on 4 waiting lists in SoCal for MSRP deals on a 2002 EX-L. I also called some 40 dealers in the area (and farther) and received some leads in which dealers were willing to come close to MSRP. Funny how many still laugh when they say how impossible it is to get it for less than 1000, 2000, even 5000 over MSRP. Arrogance abounds! (To all you skeptics and condescending twits out there, you really stink!)
So here is the deal:
Item Retail
2002 EX-L just off the truck with NAV: $30,690
Cassette $199 plus install = $325
CD-Changer $480 plus install = $530
TOTAL $31,545
Price we paid: $31,190 (essentially, the audio parts + install for $500)
Net off MSRP: $355
WOW! I never expected this. The dealer was extremely flexible, and the entire time, dealt with me on the phone (they were 90 miles from home so the incentive was there).
It gets better: MATCHED Eloan.com’s interest rate on a 60 month loan @ 6.19%
Even better: Delivered in-person to my front door!!
This is how all cars should be purchased. I think all here would agree.
To help others on those waiting lists, these are the 4 dealers that will deal at MSRP if you leave a credit card for $500 deposit:
1. Gardena Honda-I waited 40 days, and was promised only 30. Now they promised an additional 21. My neighbor waited 5 mos for their 2000 model 2 yrs ago.
2. Nelson Honda (El Monte)- very nice, no promises but they sounded encouraging. Only on their list for a week
3. Weseloh, San Juan Capistrano- Rumour has it that their wait is >3 months. Only on their list a week. Heard that they just took 5 deposits in 1st week after someone posted them here.
4. Villa Honda, Hemet – on their list 50 days, still no car in sight.
Several others are at MSRP or $500 over: Metro, Rock, Valley High (tho after that Metro post, I would be leery)
As for the drive, it is much quieter than the 1999 I drove for a while. Not sure about pickup (still babying the car). It feels like a van, but one of the smoothest I’ve driven. Not as smooth as an RX300, though. More on a par with a Sequoia.
The NAV is awesome. Not a plasma or LCD screen but true TV screen, all touch-screen. Very intuitive, very helpful in guiding you. Also gives you passing landmarks (for ex., a Shelloil logo pops up as you approach a Shell station). Has restaurants, ATMs, phone #s, really a great thing. Pricey, though at $2K.
Sorry for the long post, but this board helped me tremendously with these types of posts.
I looked in the "snow/ice tires" discussion, but only saw one reference to Cooper snow tires (and it was a question like mine) and one reference specific to the Odyssey. I was just hoping that someone here would have some experience with winter tires specific to the Odyssey.
S CA is a great place to shop for a new car. They have a huge selection of auto dealers to choose from. Probably more then anywhere else on earth. That gives you a lot of dealing room. Some of the largest dealerships in the world are located there. The Toyota dealership for one. Forgot the name.
Also some of the greatest characters. I remember Cal Worthington, the car dealer that advertised on TV all the time, with his dog spot. He was invited to speak at the graduation of the Newbury Park high school where I use to live, by the students. The parents decided at the last minute to uninvited him, because they decided that they did not want someone like a car dealer to be the speaker. I always thought that the parents made the wrong decision.
Cal was a trip, and was still touting deals on the TV when I left Anchorage (where he had a Ford dealership) a couple of years ago, and he was 80 something then. Johnny Carson got a lot of mileage, if you'll pardon the pun, out of sending Cal up. Steve Host Vans, SUVs and Aftermarket & Accessories Message Boards
oddy1, Where did you finally get your 2002 van? I couldn't tell from your post. I got an email back from Diamond Bar Honda that they couldn't give me a quote on a GG 2002 EX Leather DVD model because they don't have it in stock. Thanks in advance.
My salesperson, James Hope, delivered the car himself, extremely nice and thoughtful. Some of his superiors did not support the deal, but John Cable did. James is off for a week, and John is back Friday, 10-19.
I am certain they would do it again on an in-stock Oddy.
from the audio/video place yesterday. The Audiovox 6.8" system is very nice, clear screen, wireless headphones sound great, remote sensor in the dash, DVD under the passenger seat, the works.
Oddy1, sounds like a good deal, you paid much less than I did ($1000 over MSRP for a MB EX-L). I think you got nailed on the CD changer though, I ordered the in-dash 6-disc changer from Dalt's in Canada and paid $150 (including shipping), the car stereo place installed it for me for free.
Funny thing, I've had the DVD system on constantly while driving with my 20 month old, and at stop lights I find people in cars behind me watching the screen! Only had the thing two days, and she's already saying, "movie movie movie" whenever we get in the car. We've created a monster!
could be offered by SPEEDHUT if they get enough Ody owners interested. Currently, they offer indiglo gauges for the Honda Civic and they're really sharp!
While you're at the site, click on "EL DIALS", then click "WHERE'S MY CAR?", and fill out the short form expressing your interest in having indiglo gauges available for the Ody. You're under no obligation to buy anything nor will you receive any solicitations. I'm not affiliated with this company in any way whatsoever. I'm just a future 2002 Ody owner who would like to see these gauges offered for the Ody.
in Loma Linda. (909)799-7070, ask for Veronica. They sell for MSRP with no add ons. They have a couple of GG 2002 EXLs with DVD coming in in the next three weeks and at least one person on the waiting list for this vehicle no longer wants it. (MSRP is $30,190 plus tax, lic., etc.) (Also, check out post number 1677 in the Ody. Prices Paid forum) Good luck!
I just got my Michelin Artic Alpins with Mille Miglia alloys from TireRack (just under $900 incl shipping to NJ) for my Odyssey. BJs Wholesale charged $3 cheaper per tire, but I didn't like the steel wheels they had. Hopefully, these will be worth it. I have Blizzak MZ-01s on my Legacy since last year, but I can't really say that I have had much time in the snow or ice since last winter. But, the stock Potenza RE-92s had to go. It's embarassing when an AWD vehicle is slipping in snow, when a FWD minivan with Symmetries are moving.
has anyone purchased a 2002 and installed a class II hitch? if so, please let us know what brand, and what wiring pack was used. Also, does the hitch hang below the bumper or hid behind it?
any information would be appreciated. thanks. harold.
I will check out the Michelin Artic Alpins. We have an appt. on Monday to have Nokian Hakkapalitas put on, but will check around some more before we do it. With temps. going down into the 20 and 30's here in VT tonight, I'm anxious to get the tires on soon before the snow starts falling!
I ordered a 2002 Odyssey EX-L with Navigation. I am planning on getting the Honda 6 Disk CD Changer. Where is this installed?
From what I understand (or read somewhere) For Odys with NAV they put the unit under the passenger seat. And the driver seat doesnt have enough clearance due to electric moving driver seat. So where do they place the CD changer?

I always thought that the parents made the wrong decision.

My salesperson, James Hope, delivered the car himself, extremely nice and thoughtful. Some of his superiors did not support the deal, but John Cable did. James is off for a week, and John is back Friday, 10-19.
I am certain they would do it again on an in-stock Oddy.
Visit the site at http://www.speedhut.com and check out the cool colors.
Thanks!
any information would be appreciated.
thanks. harold.
From what I understand (or read somewhere) For Odys with NAV they put the unit under the passenger seat. And the driver seat doesnt have enough clearance due to electric moving driver seat. So where do they place the CD changer?
