might be a good time to mention that the last Alcan was won in the production class by Paul Eklund in a 2000 Impreza 2.5RS? hmm, or was it a '99... eh, whatever. he's one of the other three this time and in a Forester XT. I'd give him at least even odds against the STi.
Hi all...just registered, this is my 1st post. Did anyone else get the Subaru severe weather kit? I got a coupon in the mail a couple of months ago for this item. You brought it to the dealer, test drove a new Subaru, and he signed the coupon and you send it to Subaru. I'm pretty sure it was for existing Subaru owners ( I have a 98 OB Limited).
The kit is really nice, it's a nice nylon bag with a flashlight, batteries, waterproof matches, a mini first aid kit, 2 pouches of drinking water, a mylar blanket, a collapsable shovel, plus other stuff. Snag one while you can!
We actually get a ton of these. I'm wearing a nice watch that came from Audi Certified vehicles, ironically I didn't even have to go drive one because they never called (it would have been a TT Quattro).
We got folding sun glasses from BMW, all kinds of gift cards to lots of places, etc. I usually tell folks here but there isn't much interest. Last one I did was the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Mistubishi gives away kits with music.
I just like driving cars, sampling them, even. Then I write up a review and post it in the Town Hall Test Drive Team thread.
the only way I have seen to capture streaming video is to install a TV tuner card. you basically re-capture it. the windows media streaming files are intentionally made to not be permanently downloadable via traditional means.
There are apps on the Mac that can hijack any audio or video signal played on the computer (basically, they rip it right from the audio and video cards). No doubt, there's got to be similar software available for the PC, so look around.
Colin's right, you generally can't download or save the streams, so your best bet is to capture or hijack the signal in real time.
The link for paisan is dead now, which car was it?
Some limo company out west took a Ford F-650 Super Crewzer (26K GVW), the largest vehicle you can drive without getting a commercial driver's license, and made a stretch limo out of it. There were no pics, just specs, but I'm assuming that several Ford Excursion bodies were grafted on to it.
A 200k mile diesel engine. That would last Mike what? 6 months at least! It also had several DVD players and game controllers as well as a 42" plasma display! Wonder where they put that? Maybe somebody will go to the Vegas show and post pictures.
I remember Jean Jennings of Automobile test drove one. The article was a hoot.
IIRC, this was targeted at folks who had a need to tow big trailers and had the bucks to spend on a high capacity/luxury tow vehicle. Imagine your hobby being auto racing, concours competition, competitive sailing, show horses and you traveled around the country. This unit basically provided a little luxury with the power to tow.
You and I could drive one, as you don't need a special license. The F-650 has a max GVW of 26K, anything over that requires a CDL (commercial drivers license). So the virtually identical looking F-750 (30K & 33K GVWs) we would not be able to drive.
So yes, the F-650 Super Crewzer is meant for those who want max towing/payload, and don't want to get a CDL.
IF IT AIN'T BROKE...DON'T FIX IT!!! this changeover went like hell; I'm back to the townhall ID I had alost 2 years ago before we bought the WRX and a zillion message to read. I hope the the Techies(not) at edmunds will go back to the old login until they've thoroughly tested this new software (which IMHO they didn't!) Time to go to sleep...maybe this is a bad dream Serge
Here's a nice story(2nd half relates to the Impreza) that show's the beauty(eh?)of all-wheel-drive. http://www.globemegawheels.com/news/20040219/SOWERBY.html Apparently, the east coast just got hammered with about 91 cm of snow (that's like 3 feet), so there may be more Subies perfroming heroic stunts in the days to come!
One of the problems I've had with a great many car designs, both current and not so current, is that they look great from the front—as long as there is no front license plate.
The latest example is the new Pontiac Solstice. From the front it is gorgous, but I suspect, when you buy one here in Maryland, and then go to hang a front tag on the car it will look ugly. I'm not picking on Pontiac, as many carmakers are just as guilty of this when they design grilles that drop down into the bumper area.
However, it looks as if Audi has taken that into consideration with their new A6. This car has a huge grille that drops, as a one-piece unit, well below the bumper line—yet has taken the front license plate area into consideration. It really looks like a license plate is part of the design solution.
It's funny because this is rarely an issue when it comes to rear-end design. Virtually all cars take the rear license plate into consideration when designing the rear. Now Audi has acknowledged that this is also a front-end design issue too. I tip my hat to them.
It sure would be nice if all countries could agree on a universal license plate shape and size. It sure would make the life of automotive designers a whole lot easier.
If I remember right, several people here were interested in my WRX 6-CD/cassette stereo. I was going to put it up on Nabisco, but figure I'd ask if anyone in the Crew wanted dibs first.
I do not see any practical need for a front licence plate and would be glad to see the requirement for one dropped entirely.A lot of states in the US and some Provinces in Canada do not require front licence plates.
Just wanted to say I enjoyed my first time in the chat last night. Still on the hunt for an 03-04 used Forester x for my "boss" Have a great weekend everyone!!!!!!
I agree, but police departments wouldn't. They would argue that having only the rear plate makes their job that much tougher. There are certain situations in which only the front of the car is visible. So in a crime situation, for example, not having a front tag could prove to be an additional burden for them.
I will say, however, not having a front tag could save money for the state. They could charge the same, but save on the cost of making extra plates. With any luck, that extra money could go into road repair, etc.
With any luck, that extra money could go into road repair, etc.
No such luck here in PA. No front plates but about the worst roads in the nation (I think PA is the annual award winner in Road King? magazine worst roads trucker survey).
The state of the highways here is shameful given the tax base. I don't even want to hear "bad winters" as an excuse; I've traveled to states with worse winters (Maine, Minnesota and Wisconsin come to mind) that have far better paved roads with real shoulders. I understand the PA Turnpike actually turns a profit, so where does that money go?
Pennsylvania roads make me glad for the stock-height, stock-travel suspension of my Forester. I'll trade lowering my car tarmac-warrior style for the compliance needed in this war zone.
As a taxpayer of PA I could not agree more with the war zone designation. The turnpike money stays with the turnpike but you would never know it by riding on it. Another disgusting thing is the scandal at PennDOT. Employees using state issued credit cards for anything and everything and not one major big shot at PennDOT lost their job. Heads should have rolled!!!!!!
I grew up in the burbs of Pittsburgh, and yes we have some of the worst roads I've ever driven on.
I actually did an internship with PennDOT, and the 'official' word is that they're having problems getting the water away from the road to reduce freeze-thaw cracking. I don't know how much of that is true, but as an construction inspector, my co-workers at PennDOT were top notch.
They were even more concerned than those I work with now in TN. I know PA has a lot of salt in the winter--which messes up concrete pavements.
I'm sure there are some bad apples in PennDOT just like in any place, but I just didn't see it while I was there.
I do like how they did that for the A6, Bob. But I gotta say, the current A6 is a tough act to follow, I see no real improvement. The interior especially looks like a step down. That steering wheel is awful, did they get it from the Malibu?
Brazil uses both sizes, oddly enough. The US-size is standard, but you can pay extra and get an aluminum license plate shaped like the Europeans'.
Craig: I'd offer it to my sister but she's a broke college student.
I'd buy it for her but I'm saving up for a 2005 Subaru Off the Fence Special Turbo Limited.
I just got tickets for my son and I to go to a concert. Some Mom and Son bonding time. I haven't been to a show since my surgery(s), so I'm psyched - especially because I think I got good seats for us. (I had to be smart and avoid the "pit"). Our local Tweeter Center does not offer a good seating chart so it's very hard to tell. Has anyone here attended a concert there? It's at the Waterfront in Camden NJ. I don't want to ask him because it's a surprise. I got tickets in section 100, row AA, seats 31 and 32. If anyone knows the seating there, your info. would be greatly appreciated. I know that Bob and Dave are in this area - have either of you been there? Anyone else?
I've never been there myself. But I looked at the seating chart online and the seats are in the front section to the right of the stage. The chart says A to Z, so I don't know if row AA is after A or after Z. If you haven't already, take a look at: http://tweetercenter.com/philadelphia/
Patti- You could take a peek at the Yellow Pages. Like the ones we get in NYC, there's a page/section with detailed seating charts of concert halls in NYC, maybe the Yellow Pages you have will have seating chart.
Wonder if all that we've posted today be here tomorrow, or any time later. Just realized that the board looks funky, then I see this "These discussions ARE NOT LIVE. This server is for testing only. If you are here by mistake, click here to continue."

Depending upon the terrain, the F-XT might be better suited. More suspension travel = less driver fatigue. Go Eklund!
Note the "K" in his name. ;-)

Manufacturers use them frequently just to generate floor traffic at their dealers.
Was the coupon mailed to you? My wife is the freebie queen but I thought this one had expired.

As to towing, more than enough.
Bob
I think he might prefer a Duramax diesel over Ford's diesels, though.

I wanted to capture the rather nicely done Edmunds clip on the '05 Outback at the Chicago show. If anyone knows of 'hijack' software, let me know!

Designman, you can defend the Aztek, and then castigate Bangle's work!?!?

I see you've already posted in Our Software! Your Questions Answered... JohnV should be around soon, but I imagine he had a late night.
I might be wrong; I think the Americas is the only region with an odd plate shape/size.
I personally would like to see the use of the more elongated plates used in Europe/Asia

On another note... those new Pathfinder Armada are no joke... I'm thinking of test driving one of those monsters...
IMHO it is a blight on the front end of any car.
