$595 is the Honda Finance acquisition fee.. It is charged on every lease.. Virtually every bank has an acquisition fee on their leases...

$289 for a doc fee? That is pure profit padding..

Thank you for the information - no wonder why they were willing to let the car for a little less (they padded the doc fee number). Heh. This forum is a great medium for information exchange. :surprise:

I just put a deposit down on a brand new '05 EX-L RES AWD left-over for $28.3K (includes delivery fee).

    Is this a decent deal?

    Thanks,

hi, $32k included everything and for 2WD. it took us approx. 3 hours to test drive, negotiate and finalizing financing and took delivery of the car. didn't try other dealers because this one is near our house and we were serious and very much straight to the point so they didn't try to mess with us at all. very good experience from sales lady to the finance manager.

I am taking delivery of an EX (cloth) Pilot tomorrow. Here are the details of my deal (obtained using Edmunds.com price quote service to 4 of my local dealers):

2006 Honda Pilot EX 4WD (Cloth) Sage Brush Pearl

    MSRP-$31,295

    Sale Price-$28,084

    Cross Bars-$219

    All Season Mats-$135

    Rear Mud flaps-$79

    Tax-(Based on 6.5%)- $1854

    Title & License -$478

    Total out the door pricing-$30,849

I know the accesories are a bit higher than other online spots, but their overall OTD price was lower than other dealers. It all went very easy, with several e-mail exchanges before I committed. Dealer was Luther's Hopkins Honda in Hopkins, MN.

not all Doc fees are "profit padding".

All dealers have to pay their lic. preparers, wash bay personnel, etc... Also, We send all our mail by Certified and other means: couriers, FedEx, etc....do you think that stuff is free??

These are costs that all dealers have to pay and therefore, have to be passed on to the consumer. When so many people on here are bragging that they bought a vehicle below dealer cost, then who has to pay these workers? You do!

Think of the value of the deal before you spend your valuable time online and over the phone.

Thank you to everyone who's posted stories of their buying experiences. It wasn't until I referenced this site to the dealers I've been negotiating with that I started receiving competitive numbers. I am close to finalizing my deal and I will make sure I share my story as well.
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
    Please.

Dealers have to pay the light bill too, but that doesn't mean there should be a $49 line item that pops out in the finance mgr's final paperwork that says "Electricity".

I'm a fairly savy car buyer, so I'm smart enough to insist that the negotiation occur on a strict OTD or $X+TTL basis in which all the extra charges are rolled into a final number, but many buyers aren't, so they get a nasty surprise in the finance mgr's office with bogus charges that are supposedly "fixed" or "customary" or "all the dealers charge this" or "we don't have any control over this charge" pop up, when in fact, these charges are arbitrary and whatever the dealer thinks they can get away with. At this point, most buyers are too worn down by the process so they just succumb and pay. IMHO, this is a sly and underhanded way to do business.

As to the argument that buyers should be concerned about how the dealer pays its workers, I've negotiated twenty or so car deals in my life and in every case, the dealer had no concern whatsoever about my economic well-being - instead they were doing everything they could be maximize their profit, which is their right. So I don't understand why the consumer should be concerned about the dealer's economic well-being. No one is requiring them to sell a car at a loss.

Having said all this, I always try and negotiate in a straight-forward manner. If the deal is reasonble, I generally make it - I don't spend days running around or talking to dealerships hundreds of miles away trying to squeeze the last $100 out of a deal - it's not an efficient use of my time nor the people at the dealerships. In short, I respect the people at the dealership and am generally repaid in kind.

"These are costs that all dealers have to pay and therefore, have to be passed on to the consumer."

Wrong... Charge a price that covers your costs.. or doesn't cover them.... As a consumer, I don't care.. Just don't try to slide in extras, after the deal is agreed to... That is bargaining in bad faith..

I don't know what it's like at your dealership.. but, there are dealerships all over Georgia and Florida, where the standard document fee is $399-$599... There is no logical defense for that...

Even $35 is too much... Sell the car for enough to make a profit and pay your bills... Don't try to get more money out of the buyer by subterfuge...

If you can't sell the car for enough to pay your postage, then maybe you are in the wrong business.

I used edmunds service and did a couple direct to dealer internet quote request to 4 PHX dealers. Right Honda was the worst. I ended up at Tempe Honda. Pilot EX-L RES 4WD :
$ 31518.00 includes splash guards and front window tint
    $ 275.00 ATF Cooler
    $ 222.00 P/S Cooler
    $ 333.00 Auto D/N Mirror
Nice dealership, no problems getting out......add ons installed day of purchase for pick up later that evening. Honda Cars of Mesa had good quote too and friendly rep, but I had asked some questions and Tempe was just quicker with reply and had more colors that we were interested in. Bell Honda was not friendly and first quote was almost as high as Right. Good Luck

I am new at this and would like to know roughly how much I should pay for a 2006 pilot EX-L lease for 36 months and 15K per year. I live in Arizona with a sales tax is 8.1 percent. I plan on putting no money down and will pay in cash for the tax, license and registration. You help will be greately appreciated.

Hello kyfdx. Here's the deal in front of me now. $2,300 total down (including first month's payment), 36 months, 15k year and they want $417.80 per month. In the $2,300 down, they are saying some is for cost-cap reduction and the rest is for 'fees' such as doc fee, title, reg, etc. Also, the money factor they are using is: .00104 (2.5%) and the lease-end residual is 53%. If I use the calculator on http://www.leaseguide.com/calc.htm I can get the $417.80 using all the above 'variable' and a selling price of $31,409 which is what they are letting it go for (supposedly). Problem I am having, however, is that I think they are keeping the $2,300 (less my first payment of $417.80) or $1,880 for pure profit (less any little expenses such as new plate, inspection sticker, etc.). Would you agree? Or, am I missing something big here? I appreciate any and all feedback and I really find this site helpful. Best of luck to all. TG

I'm looking for an '06 EX-L AWD w/ RES. There are a bunch of Honda dealers within 50 miles of home, who's giving the best deals and good to work with in Northern VA/DC/MD? What "out-the-door" price should I look for?
  • crocro Member Posts: 9
We purchased from Stockton Honda, internet dept. is always easier to deal with that fleet. (internet) guy explained that he sells more vehicles at lower price versus fleet salesmen who sell less vehicles at higher price. Anyway $31,800 was the price i asked for...no going back and forth.
Oakland Honda was the first to accept this offer, but could not provide me with Black/Tan interior. Stockton Honda was able to find one from Autowest Honda (STAY AWAY FROM THAT DEALERSHIP), it is common for dealerships to trade vehicles among themselves, and they drove us from Sac to Stockton, i think chit chatting took longer than the deal.

I believe i could get a deal maybe $200 better but...i don't care. Black with tan leather is really hard to find so im satisfied.

I typically park overnight on my slightly inclined
driveway and was wondering if this could cause longer
term tranny problems, The incline in shallow at 5 degres but noticeably inclined.

If you want to take pressure off of the transmission, be sure to apply the parking brake before shifting to Park, and letting off of the brake pedal.. This works for manual transmissions, as well.

Went to the dealer yesterday and was about to sign on the dotted line and changed my mine in the last minute and wanted to get some opinion from you guys.

    LX AWD $25,500+Destination+Tax+Title+Reg
    EX AWD $27,800+Destination+Tax+Title+Reg

My question for you guys is, does it really make a difference to get a 2wd as to a AWD?
One thing I notice is the 2wd uses the i-vtec engine (Better gas Mileage) as to the standard vtec engine.

I don't really care about the extra stuff from LX to EX except the Roof Rails(for looks) and Rear tinted privacy glass. Besides that, I can live with all the other stuff. Can you guys give me some opinions. The reason I am leaning toward a 2wd pilot is because of the price. I don't want to spend the extra for something that depreciate as time progress.
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
I wouldn't worry about it. The static load from a 5-degree incline is nothing compared to the shock loads the driveline has to endure in ordinary driving. The suggestion to preload the driveline with the brake rather than the Parking pawl in the tranny is good, but I suspect you're not even remotely close to the strength of the pawl. And it's not like it's going to be loading it again and again while you drive for thousands of time - it will get loaded when you engage park and then be static.

    My $0.02: Park on.

I got a great deal @ Crystal Lake Honda in Illinois.
I E-Mailed out quote requests to several northern Illinois Honda dealers looking for a 2006 Pilot 2WD EX-L With Nav In Billet Silver Metallic.
Within days I got an internet quote for $30,379 incl Dest!
    That's $800 under dealer invoice!
And they had the color I requested.
    I then added:
    Side Steps
    Lower Trim W/ Garnish
    Fender Flares
    Day/Night Mirror
    Door Visors
    Air Deflector
    Moonroof Visor
    All Season Mats
    Cargo Tray
    Rear Splash Guards
    Wheel Locks
    Cargo Net
There wasn't a whole lot of negotiating on the accessories
Total Out the door was $34,876
That included $57 Document fee, $80 Title Transfer and then Ill Taxes. No other hidden dealer add-ons they were straight forward and we got the deal done in two days!!
I Picked it up Thursday and It Is BEAUTIFUL!!!

I think I got a great deal on the Pilot and got beat up a little bit on the accessories But I'm Happy!

P.S. I did give the dealership in Rockford Ill (Napletons) a chance to match or beat the price and keep the business at home but was rather rudely rebuffed.

    Happy Pilot Hunting!!

TG, I think my timing was right. I made the deal on 12/30/05 so they were trying to make their year end numbers. Dealers may pay invoice but then there is hold back which they get when they sell a vehicle. Also I was told that Honda had a volume incentive of $500 per Pilot which the dealer would get if they sold a certain number by the end of the year. This may sound stupid but I always seem to get a better deal if I buy on a day when the weather is really bad. Car dealers, especially large ones like Herb Chambers hate to have a day when they don't sell a car.

I am interested in the Honda Pilot (most likely the 2WD EX-L) and want to know who the best dealers are in the Orange County area. I live in Lakewood, so the Norm Reeves in Cerritos is the closest, but I am open to looking at other dealers in the South LA County/North Orange County areas. Would like to avoid a trek up to North LA County or South Orange County if possible.

I have had my current 96 Accord worked on at Norm Reeves in Huntington Beach and the service dept. was great.

    Thanks so much!

Even as SUV sales in Ford/GM declined dramatically, Pilot sales were extremely good in Dec. 05 and great full 05 year sales. The link is above.
Considering how strong Pilot sales continue to be, considering all the talk of slower SUV sales due to gas prices, I'm surprised to see Pilots going much below MSRP, not to mention invoice price.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,245
One of the reasons that Pilot sales have been strong, is the big lease incentives that Honda has put on them... I think they are getting a lot of Odyssey buyers that are put off by the high sales prices and expensive lease deals..

So, I think the low prices have generated the high sales.. If they would sell that well without the incentives, then I think you would see them disappear (the incentives, that is).

actually, gas prices might be a big reason for it. Folks don't want to give up their big SUVs, so they turn to one that gives them relatively decent mileage.

kyfdx makes a point about incentives, and I'm sure that helps ... but since most manufacturers are giving deep discounts and still seeing the decrease in sales, there has to be more to it.

Heck, i partly blame their "employee pricing for everyone" gimmicks. If anyone was on the fence, they bought then (as demonstrated by the increase in sales during that period), effectively canibalizing sales from these winter months (as if they weren't dead enough already during this time in past years).

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

I want both on my Pilot and can't get them both factory installed. Anyone have info on installing DVD after market, and how does the quality compare to Honda factory product? Are they still ceiling mounted? I want the NAV, but this vehicle is mainly for my wife and our 2 young kids, and the DVD player is a must. Thanks
  • thebillthebill Member Posts: 194
the 2300 difference between the 2 wheel vs the four wheel will be made up in the resale value of the vehicle.

2 wheel isnt worth as much as 4 wheel.

also, 2 points: 1.)the gas mileage difference is only 2-3 mpg, 2.) I like to rely on the safety and security of the 4 wheel, just in case i needed it.
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
2-3 mpg is a hundred gallons of gas in a year of normal driving. I don't think this is insignificant to most drivers. A lot of folks are paying $6-$8K more for a hybrid to get this kind of improvement in fuel mileage.

And there is no safety advantage to 4WD, except on slipperly surfaces. Despite what the Subaru and Audi ads would have you believe about the "beaury of AWD", if you don't drive in snow/ice or off-road, there is no reason to get 4WD.

Finally, I don't know what the 2wd vs. 4wd resale trends are going to be in the future. Nobody does. If gas goes up in price, the 2wd may be worth more thant he 4wd.

It's really pretty simple: Get the 4wd if you drive off-road or in ice/snow. Otherwise, skip it.

"And there is no safety advantage to 4WD, except on slippery surfaces".

Here in the mid-west, you have no idea what nature is going to throw at you from winter to the next.

I'd rather my kids be safe than sorry.

    "it's really pretty simple".

It all depends on the trade-in.

You could buy an '06 EXL AWD for $20,000 if you get a lousy trade.

The bottom line is that unless you take into account the trade AND the cost of the new vehicle you're comparing apples and oranges.

That's invoice price! That's a great deal! Please tell me the name of the dealership and what city it is in. I am having trouble finding a good deal on a Pilot because many dealerships are taking 1,500 for it in where I live --New York City. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate it if you would pass me on the dealerships name and city.
    Thanks.

That sounds like a great deal. I am in the market for a new SUV. My Isuzu Axiom sucks. I am leaning toward the Pilot, but I am looking at the 4Runner 4wd Ltd and Pathfinder LE with Nav as well.

I think I might stop by Jim Coleman's if Criswell Honda. don't give me a similar deal.
  • pschreckpschreck Member Posts: 524
Actually Mark, many of us believe that FULL TIME AWD is great in the rain as well as snow. I does indeed provide an added margine of safety on wet roads especially when pulling out at a busy intersection.
  • c_hackc_hack Member Posts: 20
I'll second that. I've used handaccessories.com since 2003 and have saved hundreds of $. Some things like floor mats and touch up paint are a no brainer for cost savings. Other items like running boards can be a lot of work to install. Even the mudflaps on the '06 Pilot are a pain to install without the right screwdriver.

    Hello--

We're in San Francisco and planning on leasing an 06 Pilot EX-L with leather and NAV. Just curious if anyone on the board is from the area and had any positive or negative experiences, good or bad deals, with local dealers.

Hey all, wife came home with a pilot last week, i have no idea what these actually cost, found this board figured i would see if she got ripped or was treated ok...

Got 2005 (still new) Pilot EX-L with RES, basically has everything except navigation, leather, 4wd, power everything, heated seats, 6 cd changer, flipdown rear lcd dvd screen, power moonroof, compass mirror with autodim, and about a dozen other things I can't think of.. but overall nice truck drives great and we are in process of getting warranty thru an online honda dealer to save over our dealers price on a warranty....

Wondered was her price of $29,500 decent for a 05 new yet pretty well loaded? Sticker said 34 + from what I recall and she said they were making deals to move the 05's but where can I find out what that 05 really went for and or if she got a decent deal?

I guess done is done but still curious so she doesn't decide to buy another car oneday without a bit of online research / poking around etc...

We purchased an 06 EXL pilot awd in Nov and found a nice little loophole which saved big $. We are military and residents of WA state. Washington does not charge its residents who are active duty outside of the state sales tax. We paid $0 sales tax because of this. We are currently in NJ who would have charged us sales tax but we hopped the border to PA and, after much confusion on the dealers end, we managed to pay no sales tax (6% in NJ and 8% in WA). Saved us 2800 dollars. Just wanted to make sure that others from WA could make use of this. You can find out more and print out appropriate papers from WA DOL website. Hope this helps someone!

Yes certainly. Dealers have a 3% of MSRP Hold back which is about $1050. I got a hard to get 2006 Black (Grey Interior)Pilot EX-L 2WD with NAV for $33000.00 out the door which came to be $1000.00 below invoice. They were not very happy selling it to me at that price but they did..and I love the car.
  • jimzopsjimzops Member Posts: 39
What? Invoice on an 06, EX-L/2WD with NAV is $31.2.
I hope you didn't pay $33K for this.
$33k is well over invoice and yours is a 2WD.
I purchased an 06 EX-L/4WD with RES for 32.5 and I think I could have done better.
