Took the "Brute" to work with me today and a friend that owns a SD V-8 ext cab 4X4 stopped by
to see my new truck and we were standing outside
the office looking at both SD's and another friend
that owns a roofing company pulled in whith his new SD psd
and while the three of us was standing in the parking lot two more SD's pulled in (complete strangers) and the five of us stood in the parking
lot shooting the breeze with five SD's blocking
most of the parking lot. Looked like a convention
    but met two new friends.....
MJE..... Glad to hear its 3 weeks and counting. Good luck... you will be happy.

Dennis4.... Ordered the Tan w/lower accent

Cowpokes.... Glad for you... took you about
four months too... probably the norm.

Mroffshore.... I will run back through your post and get your work E-Mail address and drop you
a line. My server is running so slow tonight. Got
knocked off and took me 20 minutes to get back to
this screen. Something is real busy and I don't
think it is "Slick Willy's" speech. P.S Sorry
about the Vikes... Momma took away my plastic after buying about $250.00 National Championship
shirts..... Got all Orange shirts since our high
school colors are orange and my daughter (junior)
starts on the basketball team, so they will have
    dual use.
    Love my Super Duty........

I've got PSD,CC,4X4,DRW,3.73, Auto and get 14-15mpg around town (rural). I've gotten as high as 18mpg open road 65 mph average with some 4X4 over Santiam Pass (Oregon)in the snow. ESOF has worked great and no complaints at all other than a light mid-warmup surge and front brakes locking early on snow.
I've adjusted to the mirrors and would like to move but they are OK.
One observation, when loaded with our 24 foot pull type trailer the truck squats 1.75 inches more than my 91 (CC, DRW, 7.3, Auto). Seems that the spring rate is less.
One comment, my soon to be 16 yr old daughter prefers to learn-on and drive these beasts over our Countour SVT and 65 Mustang Fastback, time to finish the restoration of my 30 Model A Pickup.

Amazon green is not available in the super duty, but the wedgewood blue clearcoat metallic is. The only greens for super dutys are the woodland green and the dark hunter green.

Shift on the fly will work on any pavement, but it is not advised to do so on dry. When you shift into 4wd you lock in your front wheels and on dry pavement that will put extra duty on your differential, because of steering, and wear it out quicker. This goes for manual shift 4wd also.

Of course, this only applies if you go 'round a corner...

My F-250 SD SC PSD auto 3.73 2WD Lariat was delivered to the dealer today, but for a number of reasons too complicated to explain (*NOT* the dealer's nor Ford's fault), I can't pick it up for another month. The fleet sales manager told me 8-10 weeks back on 26 Nov, and he has beaten that guess. Dealer is Donnelly Ford in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and sales guy is Lincoln Holbrook. Recommended, for anyone in that area.

Rich, that was a great explanation of diesel maintenance. Thanks.

    Now for more waiting .......

Hello, i'm new here and (because i need a place to vent!) wanted to say i have been waiting for 13 weeks so far for my 1999 F250 xl super duty, super cab V10 off road in bright red.I called the dealer at 12 weeks and was informed that it was going to be another 8 weeks! Thats a total of 5 months, can this be right? Oh well i just hope i have it for my annual spring fishing trip to Northern N.H. Thanks for listening.
  • kotakota Member Posts: 8
Well, I've just logged on for the 1st time this year to find that I may have the new longest wait record. I ordered my SD F350 on June 24, 1998. Still don't have any news of build date, VIN #, etc. I've just put out feelers to both Ford & Dodge south of here (where I've just bought 20 acres) to see if they can come through any better than Pearson Ford here N. of Indianapolis. Pearson, stinks!! No service at all.My best guess is they goofed, or purposelly didn't put my order in & won't fess up. JDM

I have a crew cab 4x4 V-10 auto with 4.30 LS axle. I was getting about 10 MPG when new and about 11 MPG after a couple thousand miles. I replaced my stock 31" tall tires with 36" tires. When figuring out my gas mileage, I multiply my odometer miles by 1.16 to get actual miles traveled. When I plug it into the gas mileage formula, I still get right under 11 MPG. You should get 1-2 MPG better with a regular cab and 3 or less people. Also a 3.73 axle ratio would give about 1 MPG better too.
  • tnt2tnt2 Member Posts: 115
KEH4X4... I don't think that you took into account the amount torque it takes to start moving those bigger tires and the drag to keep them going. All of this decreases your actual mileage. I believe your actual mileage would be somewhat less.

First timer here. I will read all your comments later but right now can I get some feedback on best setup for 5th wheel towing? I am thinking of the F250 XLT Ext cab LWB HD PSD 95 thru 98. Appreciate any comments re rearend, trany, etc. Any prices for the new SD? Thanks.
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
How heavy is your 5th wheel? One thing to keep in mind for long trips -- the new SD has a very well insulated interior. The diesel noise (which was very present in my '93) is almost completely gone with the windows up.
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
the diesel is significantly quieter than previous versions, i think that's the main reason for decreased noise level.
  • jack32jack32 Member Posts: 2
stanford; thanks - the 5th wheel I am looking at is the Cari-Lite 31 foot. I am not sure of the weight but it is one of the lighter ones. When you say "new sd" is it new for 99?
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
cdean: To my ear, they sound about the same from outside the vehicle.

jack32: The F350 and F250 Heavy Duty are completely redesigned for '99. They're stronger, quieter, more comfortable -- and more expensive than a used one. If you haven't taken a test drive, I would heartily recommend it.
  • leroybkrleroybkr Member Posts: 17
Pre-99 Fords had little diffefence between the F250 and SRW F350. Generally the 4.10 is the prefered axle. In 99 the GVWR for the F350 SRW is 1100 lb more than the 8800 rating for the F250 but only weighs 10 lb more. This makes the F350 a good choice for a large 5W with a hitch weight of 2000 lb or more depending on what is in the basement storage especially with the PSD which adds 500 lb to the truck. The 4WD is not recommended in 99 due to the high lift Ford added which looks great but is too high for most 5W trailers. See my post #141 for more information on the 99. The Carry-lite is a good unit. I was impressed with the quality and construction. The 500 series is 96 wide and the 700 series is 102 wide. Happy Trails

    tnt2,
We have a ten mile stretch of road in my area that is marked off to check your odometer. On the ten mile stretch, mine is 1.6 miles off.(mine reads 8.4 miles when I really go 10 miles) So when I check my mileage, I add this extra 1.6 miles to every ten miles that my odometer shows. My mileage is a little under 11 MPG every time I have checked it so far. (only 2000 miles) I think the reason that my MPG didn't go down is because 1) my truck is now broken in, and 2)the taller tires are like an overdrive for the low 4.30 axle ratio. That offsets the wind resistance factor, etc a little. The **get up and go** has suffered a little off the line, but not much. I ordered the 4.30 axle ratio because I was planning on getting taller tires. Otherwise, I would have ordered the 3.73 ratio. If you figure it out, my overall drive ratio is now almost exactly like having the 3.73 ratio with the stock tires.

I am planning on putting a CB radio in my Super D. I have a Cell phone, but want to communicate between my truck and my boat when out on the lake. Has anyone else installed one? If so where/how did you mount it. Is there any decent CBs small enough to fit in the little cubby hole to the right of the steering wheel? How about antennas? Are those hidden types that splice into the radio antenna worthless? I don't need an awesome setup, just something to mess around on.

Has anyone replaced their gas tank with an after market larger one or added an auxiliary tank. I would prefer an extra one and keep the stock one. Would having an extra custom tank of say 10-15 gallons be an emission/electrical nightmare? I wouldn't mind filling it through the rear fender well. I had an extra 20 gallon tank added on a 77 Dodge a long time ago for about $200. My old 88 F150 had factory dual tanks too. And it had the in tank electric fuel pump, so I also had a backup fuel pump in case of failure. That would be an added bonus, but more expensive. Ford should have made an extra tank an option. A 300 mile range, aint to cool.

  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
KEH: There's a flat spot just below and to the left of the cubbyhole in the dashboard that would make a perfect mounting place. I was considering putting one of the remote-mount CBs in, with all the controls on the mic, and placing the mic there.

If I did an aux gas tank, I'd get one of the combo 5th-wheel boxes / gas tanks. They run ~$750 around here, and come with a 6-8" deep storage bin over a 50 gallon gas tank.
  • fred9fred9 Member Posts: 32
I recently had a trailer brake installed on my Super Duty and I was going to have the control
mounted where Stanford suggested you put your CB, as it looks like a perfect spot to mount
one. If you look at it is molded and gives the impression Ford designed for aftermarket options
to fit there. But when I suggested this to the installer he said that thats where they mounted a
brake controller on another super duty and when they went to pre drill there holes for the
mounting bracket they caused major damage to some electrical components which were
    located right there.

I don't know if they were full of B.S. I just thought I should add my .02.

    Fred.
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
Well, tell them to look behind the panel before they drill! Better yet, take the panel off, attach the components, and reattach the panel. Sounds like they were more interested in a fast job than doing a good job.

Where did you end up putting your brake controller?
  • fred9fred9 Member Posts: 32
I decided to put the control by the fuse panel where it is useable but also tucked away, for me its in a good place. You are right about that they should have taken a look but it seems as if you have to baby sit almost everybody, and 9 times out of 10 your better off to do it yourself. When I bought my new utility trailer the brake control was part of the deal and for these guy's doing this for a living I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

In my opinion Ford should offer these controllers as an option for there trailer towing package I think it would only make sense. It's the only thing that they missed that I had to purchase aftermarket.

Good luck with you installation KEH4x4 I'm off to Calgary Alberta with a wonderful 150 mile trip
of black ice, snow and -20C temperature down to
-28C tonight. Not a problem with my F350 CC PSD
after 4 months I still can't complain this truck was sure worth the wait.

A word of advice: ask them how many SDs they have currently on order. That can make the difference between a 4 week delivery time and an 8 month delivery time. For me, the 31 day delivery time was worth the couple of hundred dollars I could have saved going elsewhere...
  • chesakchesak Member Posts: 18
Thanks for the info..there is a dealer right in Newburg where I live, and I would ideally like to buy it from them. I know the family well and would trust them to prioritize the order and follow through. I've bought trucks from them in the past. Actually, the dealer that just came in $100 under is only 8 miles from my house, but I don't care for the dealership. There is another dealer 8 miles from my house at dealer invoice I would trust before them. This 'last chance' fax I sent this morning was really just to see if anyone would come down anymore. If anyone did I planned to go back to my home town dealer to see if he could match it. If he absolutely can't, for $100.00 I'll go with him anyway. They're straight shooters, and the fact that I can trust them is well worth the money. I don't mind waiting 2 or 3 months, but some of the horror stories from people waiting 7-8 months seems ridiculous. Thanks for your help, Stanford.
  • leroybkrleroybkr Member Posts: 17
My Tekonsha 9010 brake control is just the right size to wedge into the pocket. For now I have the cable coming out the left hand side and run down under the bottom of the dash and into the connector. I will try find a safe place to run the cable out of the rear of the pocket when I get time.

Off in the morning to test drive Fords...primarily tow a 8000lb TT...not a daily driver... think I may want 4WD, ExtCab, LWB, V10...

For Stanford (thanks for all your advice...)or anyone else who knows...I think you said once that if you had it to do over...you'd go with the 3.73 vs. the 4.30...still feel that way?

And am I reading the brochure right when it says that a 3.73 limited slip rear diff is only available with the 7.3L Diesel(!?)

Maybe the Ford dealers here in Phoenix will more readily deal than our local Chevy dealers who were not giving anything away on the 2500 Silverados...
    ...stay tuned...

I am in Phoenix too. I shopped ALL the dealers within 50 miles of Phx. I ended up ordering from 5 Star Ford. They had the best price if you include what they gave me for my 97F150 4x4 trade in. But I would die and go to hell before I would buy another vehicle from them again. Tom Jones in Buckeye, had the best price, but doesn't give much for trade ins. I bought my 97 from them. They treat you excellent with no B.S. If you are willing to sell your old vehicle privately, then I'm sure they will work out the best deal for you. Sunset was next best price, then Sanderson, then Mel Clayton.
Pioneer, Earnhardt,Lou Grubb, and Bell, wouldn't even give me a price. I even provided them with a typed list of options with factory option code numbers. If they didn't have it on the lot, they didn't want my business. But I ordered in August and picked it up in November. There are a lot more on the lots these days. You may have better luck. By the way, are you involved with fast eddie engines?

Can anyone tell me what mileage I should expect from my F-250 SD 4x4 super cab with automatic trans and the 5.4 V-8.???
  • fasteddie1fasteddie1 Member Posts: 20
    KEH4x4;

No, I have no association with Fast Eddie Engines...my moniker resulted from a nickname a couple of girlfriends now past...(they didn't like trucks...)

Thanks for the shopping tips...agree about 5 Star Ford...heard the same about Earnhardt's -too slick for me- and too many unhappy guys I know who complain about poor after sale service from all their dealerships; all they want is your upfront dollar...my buddy next door just got a good deal from Bell last week with a regular 250 they had on their lot so I thought I would stop by there today first... I liked the idea that guy (in Minneapolis(?))a few posts back had about just faxing your selection with listed options to all the fleet managers in town and seeing what you get back... I may try that later this week after my weekend travels...

So...how do you like your truck so far? Engine? 4WD? Milage? Tow anything?
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
FastEddie1: For your purpose, absolutely. I'm still undecided about mine, as I do a lot of city driving as well as the long highway trips. You may have to give a little more gas to get the 3.73:1 rolling with the trailer, but you won't have any problems and the mileage and sound difference on the highway will more than make up for it IMO.

This is my third session and I finally read most of the responses about super duties. I have learned a great deal about SD's. I plan to order my F-350 SRW XLT 4X4 V-10 in February. It will be fitted with a contractor's drop side flat bed. I will use this rig in town pulling a brush chipper/vacuum trailer weighing 4,000# empty and 8,000# full. I stay at each job site from 15 minutes to 2 hours and then on to the next job. The mileage between job sites is usually less than 4 miles. This is the reason I am choosing the V-10 instead of the PSD. Am I on the right track????
  • singer4singer4 Member Posts: 43
    JB here...ordered SD, V10 on 12/9...del. w/o 1/25 into Philly..via rail. Extras needed w/be Rhino,
Pull-Rite hitch(to accomodate short-bed), and eventual power-retractable mirrors avail. through camping-world in March-99. Why Ford doesn't offer them, I can't answer.Looking fwd. to pulling new 5th whl...Terry 27ft'r..nice way to spend wnkends!! Take Care & good luck to all!!
Thanks for the input!! It helped!! By the way, it's hard to comprehend the waiting times some of you had to deal with!! The actual trk is built in one day---can't quite understand!!
P.S. has anyone seen Old Man Winter here on the east coast...it's nearly 60 today!! JB
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
catfish4: Sounds like a great combo. With distances that short, you wouldn't be saving that much on the mileage anyway... and the $4k saved is hardly insignificant. With an 8K# load I'd take the 4.30:1 gears -- makes the towing fairly effortless.
  • KEH4x4KEH4x4 Member Posts: 109
How do I like my truck?...I love it. The 4WD works very well,I was surprised how well it floats on the sand considering it's hefty weight. It has great power, good brakes when towing, lots of rear leg room,..But...Here are a few things that I don't like.
    1) I have the standard size power mirrors. The passenger side mirror has the standard type glass(not convex type) So you don't get a very wide view. My old 97 F150 had the convex passenger side mirror that was much safer. Anyone know where I can buy a stick on convex type that is the exact size as the stock one?
2)I would like to see a couple of MPGs better.
    3) For a gas hog, a 29 gallon gas tank is too small. Looking underneith, It looks like they could have made it 5-10 gallons bigger by going closer to the transfer case, yet still leave enough room to remove the transfer case.
    4) The sun visors in my 97 were great. My 99 visors stink. The sun peeks between the inside mirror and the sun visor every morning on the way to work.
5)The handle to fold forward the rear seat is hard to get to. Also, it would be nice if it would fold flat like a Super cab rear seat does.
    6) I wish the rear doors had pockets on them like the front doors have, and my 97 F150 Super Cab had.
    7) The back doors on the Crew cab don't open wide enough. With my 97 Super cab, I could fit my large dog crate easily through the third door to haul my dogs. My 99 has a lot more room in the back seat, but I have to scrape the hell out of the arm rest/door panel fighting the dog crate into the back seat area. Once inside there is tons of room. But the opening is too small. Ford should make those doors open a few inches/degrees wider.
    8) My 97 had a light that turns on automatically in the ash tray. The Super D doesn't. I don't smoke, but I keep the mail box key in there. So I miss the light.
    9) My 97 XLT had a red light shining to the rear and a white light shining down when you open the door. My 99XLT doesn't. I lost a safety feature.
I know all these things are little sissy items. But, they BOTH have XLT trim levels, the 99 is two years newer, and cost 30 grand (8 grand more than the 97). You would think that Ford would have features equal or better than the features of a 97 with the same trim level.
Anyway...the only towing I do is a 17' fiberglass bass boat (2500#), and towing a 74 Bronco. It is mostly a people hauler.

    HELP!!

Doe's anyone know what "priority 20" means?

It is stated on my order receipt.

    Thanks,

    moe7
  • KEH4x4KEH4x4 Member Posts: 109
Priority 10 is the best. That is what mine was and it took 10 or so weeks to get here. The worst is priority 50.
Personally, this late into the year, unless I needed it really bad, I would either buy one off the lot or wait and order a 2000. Figure if it takes three months to get here, (could be shorter or a couple months longer)you wont get it until late April or early May (or maybe July). Everyones 2000s will start coming out in August or September. Your vehicle will lose a lot of value as soon as the 2000s come out. But if you are going to keep it for ten years or more anyway, it wont really matter much.
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
Priority only matters within a dealership -- if you have a priority 50 order and its your turn (in the dealership) it will still get built faster than a priority 12 order from a backordered dealership.
  • moe7moe7 Member Posts: 24
I ordered it on October 27 and was told it would be in 8 to 12 weeks,i called after the 12 week and was told it would be another 8 weeks that would be a total of 20 weeks FIVE MONTHS that is a long time!

    Thanks,

    moe7
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
You can always go somewhere else -- and unless various options you want are on hold you can negotiate a somewhat more expensive price for preferential ordering treatment. I spent maybe $500 more than I had to and made it perfectly clear that I cared more about timeline than anything else ... and got my F350 DRW CC 4X4 Lariat V10 in 31 days. Just make it very clear what's important to you, and that you're willing to pay (a bit) for it.

Help. I have 600 miles on my new PS and can only get 14.1 MPG. I had expected to get around 17 to 20 MPG. This was varying the speed between 65 - 75 MPH. I have read Rich posting of Mon 18, Jan where he states that initially he was getting 17MPG mostly city driving and 16 running 80-85.
Am I excepting too much for 17-20 MPG hightway or have I got a lemond in a PS. I know after break in with a few mile it should get better, but I don't think It would 4 to 5 MPG better. All of you guys with the PS what was you mileage when you first got the truck.
Frankly, if this is the best I can do with a PS, the extra maintenance and trouble is not worth it and I will trade for a gas truck in a few months. I was hoping it would perform better that this.
Would adding dual exhaust help or is there anything else I could do.

In addition to my previous Post. I have the PS, CC, Auto , LS, 4/wheel drive, Long Bed. I think this is the same truck that Rich has.

Stanford - I'm going to order my truck this week ('99 F250 SD 4WD Reg Cab V10 Lariat). The final thing I need to do is to ask the various dealers how long the wait will be until the truck is delivered. I would be willing to wait 2-3 months, but is there any way of knowing ahead of time so I won't be one of the horror stories waiting 7-8 months? Will I be able to tell when a dealer gives me a priority number whether or not I'm in the 3 months range or worse? Is the critical thing to ask them how many SD's they've already ordered and/or received in stock based against their allocation? I'm confused on the priority issue.
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
lemans: My last diesel took a few thousand miles to break in -- it got more powerful and fuel efficient over the first couple of months.

chesak: That's correct. If they have no SDs on order and can only order 1 per week, that's better than a dealer that can get 20 a week -- with 100 on order.

I'd ask them to guarantee that if they put your order into the system and there are no 'holds' on any of the options you're requesting that it will be ordered that week. Like I said, you may pay a little more, but probably not much.
  • casper47casper47 Member Posts: 17
Chesak the dealer will have the order conformation
from Ford with in a couple days after you order it from them. Be sure to go over it with them when they get it. To make sure it was ordered like you want it and it will also have the priority on it. Request them to order it at priority 10 and keep it there. My first dealer (ordered 8-10-98) moved mine from 10 to 40 after a week. As of last week when I picked it up from the (3rd) and last dealer I ordered one from the first 2 dealers still did not have a schedule date to even build it and I have the 3rd one now. Yes I called the other 2 dealers and cancelled the orders. They clame the luck of the draw is why a dealer could order the same truck 7 weeks after the original order was placed and get it before their's was even scheduled. All 3 dealers gave me invoice. None required a down payment. They all said that if I decided not to take it they could sell it with no problem and get sticker not invoice for one in stock.
For what it's worth, I told the last dealer that I already had 2 other dealers order the same truck and they were ok with that. They only ask me to take theirs if it came in first. And it did. I think it made them try harder than the other 2 tried.
    Good Luck Casper47
  • casper47casper47 Member Posts: 17
chesak: Extra thought. Get the dealer to give you a copy of the order they place with Ford. It will have every thing about your truck listed with options numbers that you choose. If you get it at invoice it will have the invoice prices on it too.
If they are charging you more than invoice they will not print those prices out. Get the price you are paying in writing and signed (purchase agreement) in addition to the actual order.

mroffshore - The offer for every other oil change free would have been more appealing to me years ago before 10 minute oiil change businesses opened up. It takes 30 minutes or so to get your oil changed at a dealership that it's inconvenient compared to sitting in your vehicle and having the oil changed and fluids topped off in 10 minutes. The dealer even offered every other oil change free on ANY other vehicles we own, too. Unless the dealer was right in my backyard, I wouldn't consider it much of a selling point, though. But that's a judgment call on my part, I guess...what's important to me may not be important to the next guy.

stanford - I got my first response back from a dealer as far as lead-time. They said they're allocated for 2 per week and they have 9 - F250 SD's on order, and 9 - F350 SD's on order. They said it would take 3-4 months for delivery. Based on how many they already have on order, doesn't it seem like the wait would actually take longer than that, though?
