With regard to your trade-in, here are some other thoughts. You can try to sell it privately prior to delivery of the new vehicle to get more for it. It is best if you can let it go before your new vehicle arrives. If this is a problem, you can minimize the gap by picking when to put it on the market based on expected delivery of the new truck. As the others have stated, if your order is a 'normal'one, then delivery should be about 3 weeks from GM's TPW. None of this is probably new info, but I just wanted to cover it.
If you do find a buyer and especially if he is willing to wait until your truck arrives to complete the trade, you can do what is referred to as an "in-and-out". The dealer takes your vehicle in on trade and immediately sells it to your buyer at the price that you and the buyer have agreed on. You get the benefit of a higher sales price, but in addition, the trade-in price is deducted from the new vehicle price and reduces sales tax. In my case, I paid the dealer $100 for this service of handling the title transfer paperwork and reduced the sales tax on the new truck by $500 for a net gain of $400. My old truck was way out of the normal range for a trade-in (10.5 yrs old with only 51k miles) but I got $8000 for it this way. We did the "in-and-out" on Monday and I picked up the new truck on Wednesday so time w/o a vehicle was small. Make sure you ask the dealer if he will do an 'in-and-out". I have heard that you can do this with the buyer being a used car dealer. This at least will give you some leverage with the dealer on your trade-in. Then as a last resort, you can still do the standard trade-in if you don't get a buyer. Hope this helps. Effort or $$ it's your decision.
Good input above. Also, my dealer offered me $5500 on a 9yr old VW Westphalia Camper. He had no real market for it. I advertized it on internet and sold it for $13k in about 8 weeks. It wasn't much of a hassle and I came out much better.
Another thing to remember is that the you have all the time in the world to buy and that you don't need to buy a truck at any particular time, but, the salesmen have a family to support and need to sell a vehicle as soon as possible. Let them know that you will shop until someone will come to agreement with your offer. Believe me he knows someone will. They are out to make you nervous about not getting the deal and to give in. Stick to your guns. Make them squirm. You have to remain in control or you "LOSE". I buy a new truck every two years, and have never paid over 2% over invoice. Everyone is doing it these days. My deal on the truck I am about to order was agreed upon in 15 minutes. I love to save others money along with everyone else. It definately pays to go in prepared. Actually I made my deal over the phone. The dealer is an hour away. Everything is signed and agreed to in writing. Also in addition to the great deal I got, any rebates or incentives that come along will be also be deducted after the truck arrives, this of course also in writing. Legal in court!!
Oh another thing, did any of know that there is a $500.00 rebate right now on silverados????? I found out through GM customer service. Of course the dealer won't tell you, ha ha!

You can also get this coupon directly from dealer you are buying from w/proof of present ownership of GM product. This was info I recieved from GM Customer Assistance when inquiring about getting a coupon to apply towards my order upon receipt hopefully by 2/29 the expiration date of this offer. The dealer also told me he would do it that way for me if truck recieved prior to expiration of offer.

I am speaking of a $500.00 discount on a standard transmisson which alot of people like, especially if your going to be towing alot. As I mentioned before I was told by GM cutomer service via the 1-800 number on GM.Com. Give them a call they will let you know all the current rebates, manufacturer to dealer incentives...whatever you need to know. Very helpful.

Until consumers get smart enough to know that black is black and white is white, these prices will continue to soar out of Jim Bobs reach. I have bought several Chevrolet cars and trucks over the years and can not believe that the cost of producing a pick-up has increased over 50% in the last 12 or so years when a Camaro has only increased around 3-4%! Something is not right we're having our pockets picked by supply and demand.
Hey GM I have a suggestion. Produce more trucks sell them at a more reasonable price that Jim Bob can afford without taking food out of his kids mouth to own and you'll sell more trucks too!
AND HEY Chevrolet I found 2 GMC Sierra Regular cab SL sportsides's. One white and one Pewter side by side and the sticker was identical!! Not to mention, tilt, cruise, air, AM/FM cass, Chrome grill, chrome bumpers, chrome wheels, Carpet & mats , seats that actually function as seats, and an $895 sportside bed to boot for almost the same money!!!!! $19,275!! Hey, reside in KC,Mo. area and cannot get a clear answer from local dealers as to 3 and 4 door production. One dealer says all arriving ext. cabs are 3-door and will be this way for at least a month.other says that all being produced right noew are 4 doors. is anyone out thefre concerned about safety and long-term durability of the four doors. I know of a 99' owner who has already had to have his 3rd door re-aligned. Also since, realistically, you use the driver's door more, alignment could be an issue here.Also these trucks, like other makes, have no center pillar support. I can't help but feel that there is a definited loss of structural integrity here. Is the cab or frame "beefed-up" for this? Also.Wind noise could be an issue.Right now the 3-door looks better to me.
hello , Have been to two dealerships in KC area and was advised at one dealership that I could purchase for 3% over invoice. a good deal? Have found that dest. charge is slighlty higher than on invoice /pricing info. Was also quoted that on a 2000 ext;cab,1500,short bed, fleetside,5300 v8, auto. trans,lock.diff.,stereo upgrade,tinted windows, rear defrost,(LS trim),cast wheels, BSW tires, & solid paint would run me $25000. As you can see, not highly optioned. still sounds a little high to me. Anyone with a similar situation out there. Oh, this is on a 3-door, and on a local availablity, not an order.
I just got my 2000 GMC SLT Sierra 4dr. Please let me assure you this is one solid truck without the slightest hint of wind noise comming from any odf the doors. Now if you want to spend less and get a better deal then maybe 3dr is the way to go for you. Good luck.
I got my fourth door siverado 10 days ago. Its the best vehicle I have ever owned. No wind noise, solid and very quiet. Resale value for fourth door models would probably outweigh the extra upfront cost. I also have three kids which make it a must. There is plenty of room in the back for the kids. It is a GREAT truck.
Phillip, If 3dr works for you, $25000 is not really a bad price for what you describe. The dealer may be counting on the $500 coupon that is due to expire on 2/29 and GM is really trying to move out all of the 3dr inventory. Although 4dr. is roughly $300 higher, you won't get near as good of a deal as the 3dr. Regardless, 3dr or 4dr, the truck is absolutely great.
cobra22, The cab is bolted to the frame of the truck through vibration dampening mounts, and is not a stressed member of frame support, so the doors have nothing to do with strength of the frame, or perhaps vice versa. Is the cab beefed up? Don't know, but maybe. The back doors lock in pretty solidly, though. It takes a small slam to close the doors fully. You will hear wind noise of they are not fully closed. There are two latching mechanisms which lock the back door closed, one at the top, and one at the bottom. I suppose that it acts like a moveable B-pillar. When the front doors close it lacthes like a normal front door except that a lever mechanism disengages the back door handle, so that the back passenger can not inadvertently let both doors fly open. I've heard of situations where other vehicles (not silverados) doors may bind when the frame is flexing or twisting, so I found a small snow mountain, and parked the right front wheel on it so that it supported the most weight. (no load in back). All four doors opened flawlessly.
I put about 400 miles on in 5 days, and I am X-TREMELY happy with this vehicle.
I believe that GM is only making 4 doors in the 1500 series and will get all the 2500s in 4 doors real soon. Your dealer may be right though. The first shipments were for customer orders only.

I ordered my 2000 4-door Silverado on 11-26-99 through my Autobytel area dealer and took delivery on 1-25-00. The day I ordered it I was told to expect delivery sometime in March so I was surprised to find that it was on the lot and ready for delivery at the end of January. So far, I can't say enough good things about the truck and the dealership that Autobytel hooked me up with. The no hassle ordering was as simple as waiting for a phone call (within 24 hours) from the salesman. I simply told him all of the options that I wanted and was immediately quoted a price that was only $300 over invoice!! I was also offered the $500 GM loyalty off the final price since I traded in my 1988 Chevy truck. Hang in there since the wait was well worth it!!
I'm ordrering my 2000 LS 1500 4door Ext Cab Short Box today. Options include 5.3 L, auto trans, sliding rear, buckets, cast alum wheels, deep tint for $25,551 out the door. Good deal? Also, any words of advice on extended warranties? How about upgrading the tires, or should I just run on what I get?
Just a little something to think about as far as the extended warranty. They usually cost about $1600.00 which includes a big mark up by the dealership. Also, do you plan on owning the truck for 36 months. If so, you may think about buying it, but, if you decide you do want it, you can negotiate the price of that too. Most don't know that! And another thing, if you finance it for the term of the truck note, you will be paying substantially more over a 5 to 6 year period. If I buy the extended warranty, I put it on a charge card. This way you won't pay all the interest over the long term and you can cancel within 90 ninety days if you so desire. If you finance the warranty, and you decide to cancel, most dealers will only deduct it from your last payments.
Just a little something to think about. I have never used an extended warranty on any of the vehicles I have kept over 3 years. Some say it is a waste of money. Even though you will get a a prorated amount back if you trade in and haven't used it prior to the end of 36 months, you will still have spent the interest.
Just something to think about. They quoted me $1495.00 for the extended warranty I bought, but I only paid them $750.00 and charged it to my charge card. I paid it off in six months and all is good. That was just last year I did that.
Putting Ext Warranty on charge card never entered my hollow head. But that is a great idea. I have bought the extended on the last 3 rigs that I have bought. And it paid for itself before the end of the second year.
I just picked up my 2000 4 dr LT last week. The dealer asked if I wanted extended warranty. I told him no. He said if I changed my mind, I could always get it up until the regular warranty ran out. So instead of charging it, save up for 3 yrs and get it then.
If you really want the extended warranty you can use the GM loyalty rebate for that rather than the $500 discount. That is the best extended warranty deal going.
You can get it at the end of the 36 months, but you will be paying alot more. Usually around four or five hundred more dollars. You might as well finance it at that point. Interest might not be as much. It depends though, I know you can buy the extended warranties on the internet and you may be able do negotiate there too. I have never looked into it.
Thanks so much for the person who posted that their dealer will process their truck as soon as the paperwork comes in. Still no guarantee that with a build week of Feb 14th the paper work will come in time..but the dealer said if it does, we'll buy it before the end date of Feb 29. Just as an aside..with all the talk about 3 vs 4 doors..can't you put your front seat ahead and still put stuff into the back from the driver side? And couldn't a person still get in that way, like they did when we had a two door car? With the seatbelts integrated into the seats, seems that would be easy. We still are being told that we have a 3 door being built.
Dont quote me on this but i dont think the seats go forward. I know what ur thinking like the 2 door blazers where the seat goes up but i heard back a little bit ago that they dont come up. maybe theres a difference between the power and manual seats??? Thank you. I'm assuming from your answer that the seat also doesn't tilt like the old cars. In that case, I'll keep hoping that we end up with a four door, although as of todays phone call, looks like they are still building 3 doors at the factory.
Considering you get a locking differential and a rear defrost, that's a good deal. I have identical with exception to your Locking Differential and mine is a 4 door. My cost was $25,000. It's a good deal, not a GREAT deal. But, not counting the holdback, you seem to be getting the vehicle for a bout $500 over invoice when you consider the documentation and advertising fees. It's a good deal.
Anyone have an idea of what I should be paying for a Silverado 1500 LT,Ext.cab,LB, 4 door, Auto., in San Diego or Orange County? Also, I'm still undecided as to whether I should get a 2500 or 1500. I WILL be using it as a work truck to haul equipment, but only about 300-500 lbs. worth. I don't have a trailer, or a boat,yet------what do you guys think? I like the idea of a heavier built truck- But am I going to need it, or will it just be a waste of gas if I'm not going to be towing anything?
Also, what are the steps to ordering this vehicle? How much deposit do they require, and do you have to get pre-qualified. Does anyone know how or where to get the very best deal on this truck. You say that 3 doors are still being built. I haven't seen anyone post that a post-Christmas delivery of 2WD excabs have been anything but 4 doors. Did your customer rep specify what models or which factory is still on 3-door production?

It's not a walk in the park buying a new vehicle, be proactive man! The info is there YOU have to use it! First pull up the Edmunds page pertaining to trucks & decide what it is you want, price it out then go shopping for the best deal w/these papers in hand.
Just got off the phone w/GM Customer Assistance, truck was built yesterday & now another 7-10 days for testing/shipping. So time to call the dealer & let them know (I'm always one step ahead of them)and they can now track it for me. Also can now order my Leer cap for it which of course has already had a price increase since last inquiry.

RT is pretty much right on! (and yes there are some nuts here, just like anywhere!). In additin to Edmunds, check www.kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book). These should be pretty close. Make sure you know exactly what you want before you walk in the door to your dealer! Nothing like having them say, we don't have that one, BUT heres one real close! If you have invoice prices in hand, know about the 3% holdback, advertising charges - you are way ahead of the normal consumer. Be prepared to shop several dealers and you may get the best deal by ordering. Highly desirable vehicles may command more "over invoice". I had to pay $650 over invoice which was the best I could do shopping 4 dealers in the San Jose, CA. area for my 3/4 ton.
Congratulations on having your truck built. The Chevy plants are beginning to stamp them out I guess. With only a confirmed 6-digit order number and order date of 1/18, it will still be awhile before I see my truck I think. Called Chevrolet and although they have my order registered, they have not assigned a TPW yet, or even a plant location for that matter. I read where a TPW won't be assigned until 1-2 weeks before actual build date...does that sound right??? Seems to me some December orders were getting TPWs a month or so away. Anyway, I'll just wait like the rest. And you're right, after awhile you tend to forget the date and how long ago the order was placed.
It took a month to get TPW from time my order was placed so you should see something I would hope within a week on TPW.
Only down side w/KBB was they don't always have all the options listed. www.Autosite.com is another choice for pricing and seem to have better listing of options over KBB.
I was so excited Ray, to see that your truck was built, I called to see if by any chance mine was! Luckily they are still very nice to me, even though I'm being a PIA! It isn't built yet, but the work order now reads 4 door (was yours ordered as a 3 or 4 originally - I don't know how to look up topics)?), where last week, it read 3 door (I'm trying not to get excited yet, since the dealer doesn't have that info, and no one called to see if we would pay the extra yet), being built in Pontiac E Michigan. She told me to call mid week next week, and see if she has more info..if she does, she said the paper work would go out soon..hoping to make the $500 discount! Doris
The dealer called me back to confirm that they just received the paperwork on my truck, he didn't mention anything about order being changed to a 4dr. so as far as I know it's 3dr. It was also built in Pontiac East Plant. He said I should have it by 25th, we'll see! I would call again tomorrow late in afternoon 4PM EST (remember time zone difference)& again late Monday if nothing tomorrow. Be as BIG a PIA as you want to it's your money, and chances are you won't get the same person any way, I never did.
Just go back to your placemarks (which is usually other topics) and go from there or back to conference list....pickups....topic........etc. I have at least a dozen different topics placemarked & even placemark certain posts within a topic so I can readily pull them up for reference.

Do these dealers think all consumers are stupid enough to believe that pewter paint cost $1600 more than white. Well thats what I was told was the difference!
Case in point 2: One dealer in Ga. has a Black Z71 ext cab Loaded to the hilt to include heated seats for around $32,500
Another dealer in Bowling Green, KY. has the exact same truck for $28,300. I don't need a calculator to figure out somethings wrong here!!
Until consumers get smart enough to know that black is black and white is white, these prices will continue to soar out of Jim Bobs reach.
I have bought several Chevrolet cars and trucks over the years and can not believe that the cost of producing a pick-up has increased over 50% in the last 12 or so years when a Camaro has only increased around 3-4%! Something is not right we're having our pockets picked by supply and demand.
Hey GM I have a suggestion. Produce more trucks sell them at a more reasonable price that Jim Bob can afford without taking food out of his kids mouth to own and you'll sell more trucks too!
AND HEY Chevrolet I found 2 GMC Sierra Regular cab SL sportsides's. One white and one Pewter side by side and the sticker was identical!! Not to mention, tilt, cruise, air, AM/FM cass, Chrome grill, chrome bumpers, chrome wheels, Carpet & mats , seats that actually function as seats, and an $895 sportside bed to boot for almost the same money!!!!! $19,275!! The same Chevrolet truck accross the street was almost $24,500.

Have been to two dealerships in KC area and was advised at one dealership that I could purchase for 3% over invoice. a good deal? Have found that dest. charge is slighlty higher than on invoice /pricing info. Was also quoted that on a 2000 ext;cab,1500,short bed, fleetside,5300 v8, auto. trans,lock.diff.,stereo upgrade,tinted windows, rear defrost,(LS trim),cast wheels, BSW tires, & solid paint would run me $25000. As you can see, not highly optioned. still sounds a little high to me. Anyone with a similar situation out there. Oh, this is on a 3-door, and on a local availablity, not an order.
If 3dr works for you, $25000 is not really a bad price for what you describe. The dealer may be counting on the $500 coupon that is due to expire on 2/29 and GM is really trying to move out all of the 3dr inventory. Although 4dr. is roughly $300 higher, you won't get near as good of a deal as the 3dr. Regardless, 3dr or 4dr, the truck is absolutely great.
The cab is bolted to the frame of the truck through vibration dampening mounts, and is not a stressed member of frame support, so the doors have nothing to do with strength of the frame, or perhaps vice versa.
Is the cab beefed up? Don't know, but maybe. The back doors lock in pretty solidly, though. It takes a small slam to close the doors fully. You will hear wind noise of they are not fully closed. There are two latching mechanisms which lock the back door closed, one at the top, and one at the bottom. I suppose that it acts like a moveable B-pillar. When the front doors close it lacthes like a normal front door except that a lever mechanism disengages the back door handle, so that the back passenger can not inadvertently let both doors fly open.
I've heard of situations where other vehicles (not silverados) doors may bind when the frame is flexing or twisting, so I found a small snow mountain, and parked the right front wheel on it so that it supported the most weight. (no load in back). All four doors opened flawlessly.
I put about 400 miles on in 5 days, and I am X-TREMELY happy with this vehicle.
I believe that GM is only making 4 doors in the 1500 series and will get all the 2500s in 4 doors real soon. Your dealer may be right though. The first shipments were for customer orders only.

the extended warranty. They usually cost about
$1600.00 which includes a big mark up by the dealership. Also, do you plan on owning the truck for 36 months. If so, you may think about buying it, but, if you decide you do want it, you
can negotiate the price of that too. Most don't know that! And another thing, if you finance it
for the term of the truck note, you will be paying
substantially more over a 5 to 6 year period. If
I buy the extended warranty, I put it on a charge
card. This way you won't pay all the interest over the long term and you can cancel within 90
ninety days if you so desire. If you finance the
warranty, and you decide to cancel, most dealers
will only deduct it from your last payments.
Just a little something to think about. I have
never used an extended warranty on any of the
vehicles I have kept over 3 years. Some say it
is a waste of money. Even though you will get a
a prorated amount back if you trade in and haven't
used it prior to the end of 36 months, you will
still have spent the interest.
Just something to think about. They quoted me
$1495.00 for the extended warranty I bought, but
I only paid them $750.00 and charged it to my
charge card. I paid it off in six months and all
is good. That was just last year I did that.

four or five hundred more dollars. You might as
well finance it at that point. Interest might not
be as much. It depends though, I know you can
buy the extended warranties on the internet and
you may be able do negotiate there too. I have
never looked into it.

Just as an aside..with all the talk about 3 vs 4 doors..can't you put your front seat ahead and still put stuff into the back from the driver side? And couldn't a person still get in that way, like they did when we had a two door car? With the seatbelts integrated into the seats, seems that would be easy. We still are being told that we have a 3 door being built.

We are getting the electric seats..and they seemed to go forward (the whole seat), quite a bit. How about someone that already has a truck..is it possible to put stuff (and people) in behind the drivers door. If so..then 3 or 4 doors wouldn't matter to me.

Thank you. I'm assuming from your answer that the seat also doesn't tilt like the old cars. In that case, I'll keep hoping that we end up with a four door, although as of todays phone call, looks like they are still building 3 doors at the factory.
Also, what are the steps to ordering this vehicle? How much deposit do they require, and do you have to get pre-qualified. Does anyone know how or where to get the very best deal on this truck. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've been reading these articles for about 3 months now. Pretty classic! Some of these people are nuts!

I'll be calling again Monday to see if that's the day it's being built..I'll ask which factory it is..I have asked all but that. This is a 2WD excab 2500..and I had ordered it with 3 door (others had ordered with four doors). I have only heard from one person on this board who ordered three..was told by his dealer he'd get four..but his is scheduled to be built same week as mine...so I still hold out a little hope (although he got the OK pricewise from his dealer, and my dealer hasn't heard anything diff but the 3 doors. When I called the beginning of last week, they were building 4 doors, so I was surprised when she said they were scheduled to go back to 3.

It's not a walk in the park buying a new vehicle, be proactive man! The info is there YOU have to use it!
First pull up the Edmunds page pertaining to trucks & decide what it is you want, price it out then go shopping for the best deal w/these papers in hand.

Only down side w/KBB was they don't always have all the options listed. www.Autosite.com is another choice for pricing and seem to have better listing of options over KBB.

I would call again tomorrow late in afternoon 4PM EST (remember time zone difference)& again late Monday if nothing tomorrow. Be as BIG a PIA as you want to it's your money, and chances are you won't get the same person any way, I never did.
I have at least a dozen different topics placemarked & even placemark certain posts within a topic so I can readily pull them up for reference.
