Anybody notice rattle when windows down and you shut the doors on the Silverados?
My driver side door has it, so do a couple other dudes!
Will have it checked at next oil change.

    No rattles at all!

I haven't put any aftermarket stuff on like you Dave 40 so there might not be anything extra on mine to rattle

Dave40, Sure the rattle is coming from the truck?

Some of us think you might have a little excessive clearance problem between your brain and your skull....

Speaking of rattles. Recently I had a noise coming like wind coming through the wind shield when I was going over 65 mph. I took it into the dealer and they noticed it as well. They took off my bug deflector and the noise went away.

    Anyone else have this problem?

Yep - Most everyone with bug deflectors/masks are reporting this to one degree or another. It varies with speed and outside air temp - sounds like a fast "popping "noise. It appears to be due to the rubber weatherstripping on the sides of the windshield. Guess this is one add-on we have to do without.
  • mksalemmksalem Member Posts: 42
Has anyone ever felt the plastic next to the dash lights dimmer control (wire wound rheostat ??) after the headlamps/dashlights have been on for an hour or so ?? Mine is really HOT with lamps dimmed about half way - if it is this hot on the "user" side of the dash then it must be really hot on the wiring side !!

I'm driving with dash lights on full blast to try and alleviate any power being dumped into the control - I'd rather change light bulbs than dimmer assemblies - at 28K miles/year I'll be out of warranty real soon.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Yes, I noticed the problem. Agree with mksalem that is sounds like fast "popping" noise, or specs of sand, or heavy rain impacting on the glass, or a piece of tape or streamer in the wind slapping the glass.

But mine didn't begin until a fierce gust of wind nearly pushed me off the road. From then on, I got that noise. I checked all over for a leak, or something loose.

What finally fixed it was when I put some black vinyl electrical tape over the weather-stripping seam. That cured it. I was going to ask the dealer to look at it next time.

I don't think my bug deflector is the cause. It's a G.M. Goodwrench, first of all. And secondly, it didn't do this until that fierce wind gust encounter. Afterwards, the leak was always along the passenger side edge of the glass.

Took my Silverado in this morning for the leaking rear window (leaks from the top) and a whining brakes sound. Have 2400 miles on it. Whining started over the weekend while we were on a trip to CA to see Jeff Gordon kick bu!@.

Went to pick it up at 5pm. No surprise they hadn't gotten to it (even though I had an appointment)

Anyway the service guy shared a small office with another guy (who was the one that was there at 6:30 am when I got there). The service guy called someone (thinking it was a mechanic) to find out what the brake problem was. (That too wasn't done yet) Turns out it was the 3rd very low mileage Silverado brought in today with the problem. The mechanic told the service guy that they found the problem on one of the others. Seems that some seal on the front drys out and starts rubbing on the hub. (Or close to it) One of the trucks started having the problem a little over 400 miles on it. Mine started at about 2000 miles.

Just an FYI. Probably isn't a service bulletin on this yet. If you need to tell your service departments of this, the dealer I went to is Sands Chevy in Glendale AZ. Service dude was Chad.

To jxyoung and or ladyblue. Question on the Westin nerf bars. Do they mount to the frame itself of to the inner side of the rocker panel. And do they make a good step. Really undecided what I want to do. Nerf bars look good, but what few I have been around haven't been a really good step. Can't make up my mind about Running boards, nerf bars, or just a good old step.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
The best step is a good old djstep!
  • ladyblueladyblue Member Posts: 326
    djstep:

I didn't install the Westins myself - they were done at the shop where I got my cap. From what they told me, the steps attach to the frame and use existing bolt holes, so no drilling was required. I've had them for 2 mos. and they feel very sturdy.

I have now had my GMC Sierra for over two months and it is the best vehicle I have ever owned or driven. My gas milage has averaged 15mpg and been as high as 18mpg on the road after 3600 miles. It has a few quirks but I guess that gives it character. While on another discussion forem http://www.pacific-audio.com I was referred to the site http://alladvantage.com/go.asp?refid=BTP090 this site pays you to surf the internet up to $20 a month for 40 hours. I have signed up and I thought that you guys might be interested. Best of luck and enjoy the summer

Re: wind noise from bug deflectors.

I brought and installed the Chevy bra cover on the hood. Included in the installation kit was double-back adhesive tape. At first, I didn't want to install it as it involved removing the windshield moulding (plus the instructions was a really bad copy, that was hard to read). But a couple of days of driving with a wind noise loud enough that even the radio couldn't drown it, I chose to pull back the rubber moulding to remove the 5 screws, pull one side of tape backing off, put the tape on, put the screws back it to align moulding, pull the rest of the tape backing off, and press the moulding down. No more wind noise.

Maybe the plastic bug deflectors need to include the double-backed adhesive tape to install under the windshield moulding to cut the wind noise too.

    Hope this helps.

Bobfox, there is a service bulletin out about customers complaining about brake squeal. Maybe this may be your problem and cure.

    Service Bulletin Number: 86-50-24
    Bulletin Sequence Number: 400
    Date of Bulletin: 9901
    NHTSA Item Number: SB603985
    Make: CHEVROLET TRUCK
    Model: SILVERADO
    Year: 1999
    Component: BRAKES:SERVICE BRAKES
Summary: COMPLAINTS ABOUT A " SQUEAL " NOISE COMING FROM THE BRAKES. *YC

I had a squeal noise coming from my '99 Silverado, more noticable on hot days and highway driving. After I got my new motor mounts, something must have shifted since the noise is not noticable at all, compared to the way it was. I had determined the noise was coming from somewhere between the front diff and the left front tire. If I can't reproduce it for the service advisor, they won't do anything about it.

I installed the Westin's myself. You remove 4 bolts that go thru the frame into the cab. Look under and you will see some round mounts with bolts going straight up into the cab. Kind of a surprise when I looked at the directions?
I did it in about 1 hour. The step works fine makes getting in and out for the kids and wife much easier. I am close to 200 lbs and the step
does slight flexing when I get up on them but they are not going anywhere.
I got the black for $189 (chrome is a little more)with free shipping from:

Re: Wind noise from bug deflector. You guys are right on about the noise coming from the weather stripping. I phoned GM but they deny having such a problem. They did agree to fix it since they put the deflector on. But we'll see. What do you think of a guy running a bead of silicone under the weather stripping? Comments appreciated.

    Hello all,
    I've got a '99 Sierra SL 4.8, auto, 3.42 reg cab.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced a sharp shift from 2nd to 3rd. It doesn't seem noticeable at low rpms but on a good acceleration it shifts pretty hard. The bad thing is that it doesn't do it all of the time. It's kind of frustrating. It doesn't matter if I'm in OD or not. I took it to the dealer and they said it was in factory specs so they couldn't do anything about it. They told me to bring back in a couple of weeks--squeaky wheel gets the grease (this is a quote). The service writer said it was the drive shaft or possibly the U-joints. It doesn't make sense to me but what do I know. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.
Besides that, this is a very nice truck that I plan on keeping for a good long time!
  • bobfoxbobfox Member Posts: 14
Well they thought they fixed the prob. But didn't. Picked it up last night, drove home ~4miles. No squeal. Today it was doing it again. They think its a seal. Gotta take it back tomorrow.

MPG updates: Trip from Phx to LA (to see Nascar races). 15.745 mpg against strong headwind. Avg speed 75mph, no air-conditioning on.

From LA back to Phx. 16.2 mpg. Avg speed 88mph. Occasional air on. Slight tail wind.

Engine 5.3L, 3.73 limited slip, Z71 extended cab Silverado 1500.

Best milage so far is 18.125 mpg. That was driving from hotel to Universal Studios, back, hotel to Race track to see Busch race, back to hotel. (Filled up on Sunday so we could leave race to head straight home)

I hope this squealing gets fixed real soon.

I got an approximate build date for my black LT ... the week of May 24th with a devivery date of approximately June 10th. Good timing, since I'll be able to break it in in time for a camping trip.

    rwagoner,
When did you order your truck? I ordered mine from the dealer in early April but they didn't get the order accepted until the week of the 19th. (I thought I was going to have to fight to get a deal on a 2000 model.) I called Chevrolet last week and found out the order was accepted and "preferenced" but no build date had been set yet. At least I'll get a truck sometime. Called them again yesterday and they are checking on a build date. Should know next week. Sounds like it will probably be a very late May or early June date from your append.

I don't recall exactly, but my memory is April 6th. It MAY have been the previous Tuesday, but I really don't remember any more. They ordered it after trying to find one locally.

Just talked with the dealer today. He told me that my Sierra 2dr, reg cab, long bed was built this week and will be moved to the shipping area next week for transport. He said that he should have it on the lot on or before May 25. I told him to take it over to the local Rhino-liner dealer and have the box sprayed as soon as it arrives. Will post later when it arrives.

    Today I "built" my Silverado.

The dealership/salesman said '99s are impossible to get... So, I'll be ordering the '00 model, but pricing details are still unavailble from factory ... thats what the saleman said... I'm sure a small price increase is coming ...

And after reading some of the comments in this "Town Hall" it sounds like I'll abe waiting till May '00 to take delivery!!!

Any help on how to ensure I get the fastest delivery would be appreciated...

P.S. Any rumors/confirmation about the "Fourth Door" on the 2000s?????

    Thanks!!
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
As I said previously, an engineer at Chevy said to expect the 4th door to start trickling out at the end of 1999 (2000 model) and decent availability by about March 2000.

Shifts will get harder the more into the pedal you are. TV in transmission may need to be adjusted if it is real bad. But it also may be in specs the way it is. Only the trany guy at the dealer can say for sure.

    SQUEAKING Brakes:
There is a problem with squeaking brakes, GM says the rotors are at the wrong specs. And will send new one with different specs. I personal do not know if this helps the problem. GM is saying the rotors were either to wide or narrow i forget which. Maybe this helps.

    DESIGN FLAW
Again this week I saw two more manuel seat tracks fail. Total up to 4 so far. I belive there will be more. Only consistent problem I have noticed with the new silverado.

dealer friend of mine said you should be able to order a 4 door ext. cab for MY2000. the key words were "Should be able".

For those wondering about GM's oil monitoring system, I read an article in an ASME magazine last nite that explained about automotive oil monitoring technology. There are two different approaches to the problem--real-time analysis of oil or predicted models.

real-time analysis uses various sensors to determine oil quality. mainly measures the dielectric constant of oil and relates that to acidity which is related to oil degradation. Temperature is also measured for corrective calculations. water content is measured by capacitance and metal content is measured by impedance. the problem with this system is that one the system determines oil needs to be changed, damage is already being done.

the other method is what is used by GM. they use a mathematical model in the onboard computer. GM has actually been putting oil sensors in some vehicles since 1988. after much testing over time, GM is using this massive amount of historical data to create a computer algorithm that takes into account the way you drive to determine when you oil needs changing. the computer monitors rpms, hours, fuel consumption, and determines the oil change signal from the pre-determined algorithm.

The article said that GM is really the only company actively using this technology. they say that many people are changing they're oil too early, and that the system could save up to 40 million quarts of oil per year.

They also said Mercedes is about to implement a system that uses the real-time analysis AND the computer historical model together

I will go along with cdeans posting. I work for a large U. S. military jet engine manufacturer, and we have been working along the same lines with oil sensor and monitoring while the engine is running and on-line. This is to eliminate the practice of S.O.A.P. sampling the oil after the engine has been shut down and establishing a contaminate tread vs time. Most trends occur after the fact. We have on purpose, ran a retired jet engine which was modified with the sensoring devices and ran every known contaminate found in the engine plus sand, other metals and materials not found in the engine. The results so far have been most favorable and is still under data review. These sensors and monitors will do the same thing that the S.O.A.P. sampling now does, but it will not shut the engine down in flight. It will give a visual cockpit warning to the pilot that a trend is occuring and that he should seek immediate action soon.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
The problem with the mathmatical model for oil life monitoring is that is doesn't account for dust or dirt. My GM owners manual says if you live where it is dusty, to change your oil at 3000 mile intervals.

Thanks for the info 26Andrew1 and I hate to sound ignorant but what is the TV in the tranny? Within the past couple of weeks, it doesn't seem to be as harsh. It does seem worse when it is cold. After about 30 min. of running, she seems to smooth on out. Thanks again.
  • fish6fish6 Member Posts: 50
I think the engineers messed up a little with that area just in front of the front tires. Mud, water, etc. splashes over the front bumper and dribbles over the corners of the frontbumper. Maybe just a little rubber molding would prevent this....2000 model???????????????????????
  • bdonbdon Member Posts: 30
How about a delivery date 3 weeks EARLIER than anticipated? Ordered 3/31 and got a build date of today (5/10). I was hoping to see the truck by the end of May. My dealer called late this afternoon and told me the truck was sitting in his back lot. Quite a surprise given the delays many out here have experienced. I pick it up at 11:30 tomorrow morning.

Question about the 500 mile break-in period. Later this week, I'm going on a trip and will drive several hundred miles over a 4 day period. Obviously I wasn't planning to take this truck, but now would like to. What about the stated recommendation to not drive the truck over 55 mph during the break-in period? I can't possibly keep it under 55 on this trip.

My salesman said it was a good idea to honor that limit and I should stick with my original plan (borrow my mother-in-laws truck). But the finance guy said that limit was not a big deal, that is was more important just to be sure I varied the speed during that period. He also said to call the service manager and get his opinion. I'll do that tomorrow. He did go on to say that it had no impact on the warranty either way.

What does anyone out here think? I'm dying to drive this thing and this trip is a great opportunity to get some miles on it. But I don't want to do any damage.

    Comments appreciated.

    Update on squealing on Silverado.

It wasn't the brakes. It was the seal on the left front tire. Actually rubbing against something. They took the seal off and relubricated it (it was dry, and wasn't supposed to be)

told me that the seal would have been toast in about 2000 miles had it not been seen to.

It would only start squealing after it heated up (ie. after driving for awhile). All you new owners start listening for this sound. Sounds like you need new brakes, but it occurs (usually) at slow speeds, approximately 5-35mph, and when the brakes are not applied.
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93
    For new owners.

It seems GM forgot the EXTERNAL trans cooler on some trucks. So take a look to make sure yours is there if you got one on your truck
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93
g8tr, it measures the throttle position. which in turn has some control of how hard the tranny shifts. But the tv is only one input of several.
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
In this case, I would go along with GM's reccomendations. Varying speeds, varying loads, and keep it under 55 for 500 miles.

Of course, the finance guy doesn't care if you just drive it normally. It's not his car and he won't have to deal with potential problems at 50 or 100,000 miles. If you don't plan on keeping the truck, don't worry about it. On the other hand, if you want to keep it a long time, a little care during break-in will pay dividends in the long term.

I took my truck on a long drive on winding country roads for break-in. Plenty of shifting, mild accelaration, easy braking, etc. No traffic to keep up with or to cause panic stops. Perfect! The only problem was the 50 miles of freeway to get there. People were trying to run me off the road for driving so slow - but I did it.

Bobfox, thanks for the update. My Silverado was squealing also when it had been driven for a while and it was warm outside. Since the motor mounts were replaced, I haven't noticed the squealing except when I pull into my garage. It used to be very noticable, even when driving. Could you find out where the seal is and what it was rubbing on? I may need this info when I take it to the dealer next time its squealing.

    Thanks.

early delivery / break in period (bdon)
Take the back roads. You are only talking 2 hours 25 minutes extra over 4 days, that averages 36 minutes a day. I bought my truck 30 miles away by freeway and used the back roads on several trips to the dealer (under 55mph). I was amazed what I had missed seeing over the years and I really enjoyed "bonding" with the new truck . Life is not alway 75mph.
  • nuwonuwo Member Posts: 63
Ordered it on 24 Feb, build date was 26 April, and I finally took possession today. It's been a long wait! LS, 4x4, 5-speed, ext cab, 4.8L, 4.10 axle, locking differential. My first drive was from Scottsdale, AZ to Flagstaff up I-17. I wasn't able to take the more leisurely backroads route since I needed to be back for my kid's baseball game. Anyway, I took it pretty leisurely (45-55 mph and much to the chagrin of people driving normal freeway speeds!). At the risk of being redundant, I thoroughly enjoy it.

The fleet manager who I worked with indicated that Siverados will be in pretty short supply until the 2000 models are out. So, those looking to buy now may have little to choose from.

Was talking to a chevy sales manager today. He told me I could order a year 2000 silverado now by negotiating a price for a `99 then pay the difference when 2000 prices are announced. Are there any pitfalls to doing a deal this way? Also promised a delivery by late july. Is this realistic or does he just want to sit on my deposit money? Does anyone know when 2000 production starts or when prices will be announced?

Here is what I have on my window sticker for the towing package. Trailering special equipment $285.00. Includes trailer hitch platform, 8-wire trailer harness, transmittion oil cooler. The pickup has the first two, but no transmission oil cooler, other than the normal lines going into the radiator as all auto-trans have. Been around the lot with the dealer today, trying to convince them I have been shorted an aux. trans. cooler. The dealer is a GM and Chevy combined. All the GM,s with towing package have the aux. cooler and none of the chevy's do. Does anyone have any info on how to get a description from General Motors on what exactly the Trailering special Equipment consists of. Manager stated that it was possibly ordered as a heavy duty trailering option. I can't find that opion available for a 1500 series
  • jxyoungjxyoung Member Posts: 156
Does anyone see the aux transmission cooler on their truck? I will look for mine tomorrow! Is this the typical small extra radiator affixed to the radiator? I will let you know if I see mine!
