Many mornings it is in the teens when I arrive at work (after climbing a mountain). I typically wait 3+ minutes after arriving at work before turning it off. This is very hard to do when you are late or the President pulls up beside you when you are parking. I know people think I'm nuts sitting in my Jeep for 3-5 minutes before I walk into the building every morning!
Just curious how old was your Rav 4's when you decided to get rid of them ?
Diesel owners are meticulous about their fuel.
If you fill her with ULSD,or use the fuel additives I am sure you'll be happy with her performance.
I come from a jeep family.I owned 2 jeeps ,
an 86' cherrokee sport 2.5 L 4cyl stick 250,000 miles,
Gr. Cherrokee I6 4L 600,000 mi,still runs good .
I can think of 3 reasons why they lasted...
1/before any long trip I made sure to get the synthetic oil and filter changed,
2/drivetrain fluids changed every 2 years.,
3fuel filter changed every 2 years.
I always believed if you take care of her, she'll take care of you, especially if you go skiing where I go ,and there is 3 ft drifts on unplowed roads or unpredictable weather. You don't want to be stuck there.
Have fun play safe !!
Lightnin3..
What makes you think I owned a Rav4? I have owened 4runners and a Tacoma TRD V6 4 door that will blow these Jeep Libby's off the trail. Have you looked at the ground clearance difference betwwen a Tacoma TRD and a Libby ? You could almost drive the Libby under the TRD!
I also ahve a 99 Cherokee Sport with 92,000 miles on it and it is tired. My father has a 98 Grand Cherokee V8 and it is ok but has suspension issues at 86,000. The engines run OK but little things are falling apart on them. When I sold my 8 year old 4runner with 200,000 on it, there wasn't a squeak or rattle anywhere. It drove like new and ran like new. Most any vehicle can be kept alive for a long time, but what is the cost of life support? I'm no stranger to Jeeps or Japanese 4x4's. For durability, its hard to beet the imports. If you don't believe that then look at the resale value of Toyota versus Jeep.
I'm glad you are happy with yours and I hope you continue to be happy a long time form now - I'm hoping the same for myself or I wouldn't have taken the chance on a Jeep.
I think the owners manual states:max 5% bio from a reputable gas station
Do you all want to use bio diesel at will? This group above should have some historical knowledge and experiance, because they are the worlds diesel fuel system suppliers.
Ground Clearance on the Jeep Limited is 9.4"
Ground Clearance on the TRD Tacoma DC is 9.4"
Be fun to watch you try to drive a Liberty under a Tacoma!
Regarding off road ability of the Liberty, with skid plates and a 2.5" lift it is exellent off road.
Your opinion is negative of domestics and Jeeps and yet you purchased another one! I know your type.
My previous truck was a TRD 4X4 Tacoma so you are not going to slip any BS past me.
Best Regards
First of all the message wasn't addressed to you so I wasn't trying to "slip" anything past you. Second, i only bought the Jeep because of the MPG - not because i am a Jeep fan. in my mind I took a $23,000 risk selling a 03 Toyota and buying a 05 Jeep. Third, if you really had a late model TRD you KNOW the difference I am talking about. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Sure the Jeep may be a good "Crawler" but the V6 TRD tears up the trail. While the lowest point on the two vehicles MAY be the same (which I doubt) I would take the TRD in a clearance situation every time. You even said yourself "with skid plates and a 2.5" lift it is excellant off road" - the TRD is excellant off road stock. I'm not a Jeep basher - I'm just talking about the reputation they have earned. How many Jeeps do you see broken down on highways versus imported 4x4 (especially Toyotas). Personally I have seen lots of broken down jeeps and 0 toyotas 4x4's on the side of the road. I suspect our favorite mag Consumer Reports will validate the reliability issues with Jeep in general versus the Totota 4x4's (Tacoma and 4 Runner).
I'm sorry some on this board are so close minded and brand loyal that they can't see but one point of view and understand that there are other good (and possibly better) vehicles out there. Obviously I bought a Jeep so i am hoping it is a good one and lasts a long time. Right now I like my Libby - but I also really liked my Toyota. If they could have found a way to get 28 mpg I would have kept it.
I meant 4 Runner/Tacoma opppsss !.. :surprise:
We all know "what vehicle" can do,advantages and so on..
We all like to beef them up as well .eg.big lug tires, suspension great !! please don't bash jeeps on a jeep forum. We are trying resolve these problems ,especially when it is a new product.
In my travels I have to admit that,
I have seen many Gr.Cherrokee's travelling on the road across the States and Canada ,they are popular vehicles.
I've never seen one broken down, yet, but I had an alternator breakdown
never seen a toyota older than 10 years though...
I have had good luck ?? I have to say with jeep products that is why I bought this one .
Hey you guys !! isn't this diesel great !!. Isn't there any hero stories here ?? instead of zero's..
I'll say , I have bragging rights,I went on a 6 hr trip with my 05' Libby
towing a trailer 2000lbs ,avg 25 mpg !! 26,000 mi on the OD..how's that !,and am getting ready for a North Michigan ski trip..new snow tires ,GPS is ready, which shows you the local Chrysler dealerships Yah!!,
so I am ready ... :shades:

Lightnin3..
You have lifted your CRD? The cross member and muffler seem pretty suseptible to me and I'd like to try the 2.5" lift too.
However, I don't want to give up stability (read SAFETY) while towing.
Any experiences with that?
My Liberty CRD may as well be a Toyota: Zero problems so far, workmanship is fairly impressive, and it's the March '05 build.
Non of my jeeps have ever left me on the side of the road and the quality/dependability was better than Land Rover, Ford, GMC, and at the least as good as Toyota--- and in my personal experience better. Plus the cost of parts/repair was significantly less than Toyota.
My CRD has been great---love the diesel.
Love my Libby! LK
I kinda think you dealer was just blowing smoke at you. My opinion is that there are some tec's out there that just quess at an answer rather than take the time to really research the real facts. If the dealer replaced your battery, what did they replace it with. Perhaps they put a cheaper in, rather than the OPTIMA it might suppose to have.
Unless you have gone to this dealer long enough to have first hand experience, and have come to trust what the Tec's say, I would not be so trusting. Turst in a dealer is constantly being renewed and earned, as far as I am concerned. Good luck!

I honestly think that almost any car made today is so much better than any car made in the USA in the fifties or sixties. Yes that even includes KIA!
My personal preference is to buy as much of an American car as I can. 81% for a Jeep is pretty good compared to most japanese cars, even those made here in the USA. We are blessed here in the USA to be able to buy almost any car we can afford and want.
I could not tell ya if a Toyota is a better 4x4 than Jeep, as I honestly don't know either way which is the best. I do know that DaimlerChrysler has earned my trust, and has built good serviceable cars, trucks and Jeeps, at least that's my experience so far. In fact I have a 1996 Dodge Neon with 176,000 an it with the original engine that still runs good, and I have kept up with the "B" schedule and it's done quite well, as I am sure this CRD will also. Hope your CRD does very well for you too.

I was up North last night. The Jeep sat outside. It got down to -7 degrees F below zero when I went to bed. It was the same when I got up this morning. I went outside and cranked over the beast. She roared and smoked, she panted white smoke quite some time, but came to life just fine, ready to carry me where I wanted to go.
I consider that a success.
No additives to the tank. I buy #2. The heater was not plugged in. If the cold snaps continue, I will break down and give her some additive. Maybe some #1 or if it's really cold some kerosene.
I've had a lot of gas cars that go to sleep in the cold. It's harder for diesels. I think Jeep built it right.

In "building" one on the Jeep web site, I discovered that if one ordered the Sirius installation the stereo with navigation was unavailable. I've also learned that the factory radio without NAV does not display artist / title with Sirius.
In talking with a dealer today they told me that they have a workaround. That if one orders a Liberty with Sirius from the factory, and then they install a stereo / navigation head unit at the dealership, it all works, and so one can have navigation / Sirius AND the artist / song readout.
Has anyone done this, or is the dealer blowing smoke?
Ultimately, I'd like the hands free Bluetooth, Sirius and the full Sirius readout. I'd prefer not to have to buy Nav just to get the readout, but if I can otherwise negotiate a good deal I might go for it.
Now, about that iPod hookup ...
The only down side of all this fun is mileage dropped to 17 in the snow. I think it is time to head south. Love the car. cheers!
The question I have for you is was the Predator worth the price and would you recommend it to other CRD owners. Also, What was your purpose for adding this device.
To add insult to injury, I had the jeep in to the dealer for an oil change (free for life) and I was talking to my old salesman and he said that when I bought it they would have been happy to change out the stock tires with Michelins for a small fee (now he tells me). He said they do it all the time. They install LTX M/S on the Liberty as a replacement.
Needless to say, this week I am headed to the tire dealer for a change out.
We use 4x4 and drive on gravel, windy roads every day. These tires ride better than any tire we have tride before. I have NEVER been agood year tire fan, but after my 2005 Liberty Ltd, came with them on we have really been impressed.

I once leased a Ford Ranger in the late nineties, same deal. They had the Firestone equivalent. The tires went bald after like 15,000 miles.
This is a great forum , please keep the info coming .
Thanks

Thanks!
Any real loss of power?
Good luck LK
Be careful with the lift
keep it upright!
We even towed our trailer over Austin Pass (7200 feet) in the snow. No slipping or sliding with our BF Goodrich all terrain TA tires.
At a closed weight station we rolled thru and weighed. CRD 5250, Chalet camping trailer 2700.
I had to pay attention to hills making sure I shifted out of O.D. so to hold 55MPH (2500RPM) and not overheat transmission. Otherwise traveled in O.D. at 64MPH at 1900RPM.
I went to the link, followed the instructions (ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON) three times, and nothing came up on my odometer except the mileage. Is there more to it than this or does it mean that my vehicle has no problems?

No worries on keeping the shiny side up. I've been driving a lifted Trooper.

More Good....
I just went to LA from Phoenix after driving to Phoenix from Flagstaff. I was doing 80+ mph on the drive down from Flag and probably 75+ all the way to LA and back. Tank over was 24.5 mpg and tank while there driving LA freeways was 25.5 mpg. Filled up in Indio and still have well over half a tank. Two adults, two kids and a bike hanging off the back. I've got about 1800 miles on the Liberty so far. I'm not about to baby this thing to squeek a few more mpg's out of it. The alternative was my '83 chevy blazer getting about 8-9 mpg!
so far so happy.
Catching up on this board. You made me LOL! No, not turning this torque-monster into a S2000 or tricked-out RSX. The claims for this little gadget was that it catches enough air and redirects down the back glass that is keeps the mist that gets sucked up from the road as you drive from accumulating on the window (run-on sentence, sorry). Since my winter mist includes salt and molasses, I thought that this might solve my problem (before it occurs). My wife has a mini-van. The vacuum-effect makes the back of her vehicle a caked-on mess during the winter. Just trying the keep the rear-end of my CRD pretty!
On another note, which hometown of your homeboy do you live/return to. After all, Rushville claims Tony and Tony claims Seymour!
Happy Holidays to you too!
Boilermaker
Oh, for crying in the "bucket" (no pun intended). Did you study geography in West Lafayette? My man Tony was born, raised and resides in Columbus!
So - does the deflector work?
- Indian
As for my geography lesson, as I drive my KJ into Rushville on SR 44 there is a little sign that reads (or at least did, I'll take a picture if I remember) "Home of the Rushville Rocket, Tony Stewart". :shades:
Boiler
Just joshing.
Actually, there's been quite a bit of confusion regarding "Smoke"'s hometown, over the years. He was born and raised (and still lives) in Columbus. The Rushville connection was that he lived over there for a couple of years after high school (since he was driving USAC sprints for a Rushville resident who also set him up with a full-time job). It was during this period that he first started gaining some notoriety and one of the Indianapolis sportscasters (Mark Patrick, I think) gave him the "Rushville Rocket" nickname.

Thanks..LK :confuse:
Just purchased an '05 CRD Sport here in Milwaukee, WI. So far I love it, way more economical than my F150 Supercrew and the coolness factor of the CRD is huge for me! I have had numerous diesels over the years and this one was a no-brainer when I found out they were making Liberty diesels. I put about 50k miles a year plus on vehicles so it will be a good test for the longevity of this engine.
So far I have been getting 23mpg with a combination of 70mph freeway and stop/go city driving w/ 1,000miles on the clock.
I have worked on big diesels my whole life(Peterbilts mostly) as a mechanic and service mgr so I feel more comfortable with a diesel over gas. Glad someone is finally getting brave with the diesel market, I really feel it is the future. Hats of to Daimler-Chrysler for leading the way. Hope more diesels are to come...
On another list, someone actually wrote CR and took them to task for
the 11 MPG rating, after their report was given play on ABC News
20/20. They wrote back to him, and described their testing methods.
Basically, they take a graduated container with a measured amount of
fuel, and hook it into the system ahead of the fuel pump. They drive
their standard course, and then see how much fuel was consumed out
of the container.
Can you see where they screwed up? They completely forgot about the
fuel return line that recircs back to the installed fuel tank. At
least half the fuel out of their container got deposited back in the
vehicles fuel tank. When they returned that CRD to whoever owned it,
they gave them a half-gallon or so of free diesel!
That would also explain why nearly every vehicle they test gets
rated as getting MPG significantly less than the EPA rating. They
haven't updated their testing methods since the BFI era (Before Fuel
Injection).
The word "clueless" hardly begins to describe this. And good luck
getting them to admit publicly they screwed up.
Now, does anybody on this board have a "friend of a friend" that works there? I actually like their magazine and use their information. I figured they were SO way off base on their conclusions for this vehicle that I dismissed it outright. In addition, they have slammed this vehicle in no less than three articles which is something I don't ever remember them doing. ( I could be wrong, there may have been a refrigerator they didn't like :P )
Maybe Edmunds could go undercover and report on their findings. I hope that CR hasn't gone down the road of Dat_line but you never know...
